i remember when i first started uh north colony when i first started north colony the only thing that i really dealt with is new converts i didn't deal with mature christians north colony didn't start off there was nobody that started off at north colonies and they had been in christ over a year so imagine a church and the only members have just been baptized and they were only two weeks old our very first service they were only two weeks old i didn't really start having issues until older christians until older christians saw because our conversations in the beginning was about jesus christ and him loving you jesus christ and how wonderful he was how jesus christ and how beautiful the kingdom is and i need you to understand and week in and week out we talked about how you're saved and all your sins are washed away and so what ends up happening later on is that older christians that came from uh other places there had to be a uh deprogramming that had to be a deprogramming and so there were some people who came to north carolina and they were unfamiliar with us praying with our hands up that made some people feel uncomfortable so i remember getting in bible studies and saying hey why do we do that why why do y'all do that because that's not what i'm used to yeah but it's bible that's why we now put the scripture up because it's it's bible uh one of our converse every time that it was time to pray um and she was a newcomer but every time it was time to pray she honored god so much she would get on the ground and pray so when it was time to pray if you say hey let us bow uh she would put her bible to the side and she would actually get on the floor that made some older christians feel uncomfortable the new christians said no i guess this what we do uh they didn't have issues the older christians said you need to sit in your seat because that's how jesus prayed he he said in a cushioned seat in the air condition you need to pray like jesus uh and so when we realize is in studying the word of god that's one thing that you can be able to approach and study the word of god but it's another thing when you have to de-program what you thought was in the bible that wasn't in the bible so there's a certain point where you you literally having to de-program and say okay cleanliness is next to godliness is not a it's not a scripture you need to do it though but you need to clean yourself but it's not a it's not it's not a book chapter or a verse and somebody said well i thought that was in there and then some people say you know uh you know god said the bible said no that was your granny your granny said that but that necessarily wasn't uh it wasn't the bible and so when people come into christianity sometimes sometimes there's a dispro uh deprogramming also and so they come into christ and then they're asking the question is it wrong to do this can i still i did this before i was a christian now that i'm a christian can i still do it okay okay i used to go to these places but i'm baptized now can i still go to these places even if okay if i cut back and go once a month is is it okay okay if i go and i don't do this but i do that is it still okay uh is it okay to be in certain situations or certain places and so bible study is extremely important because there is a deprogramming that has to occur here we are in matthew chapter 5 and jesus is doing some teaching but before he can really talk about uh christianity and before he can really talk about the church uh in this particular verse he actually has to do some deep programming before he can actually do some teaching so as on one part of jesus's teaching i gotta tell you what's not acceptable and then i gotta tell you what god actually says here we are in matthew chapter 5 and verse 43. you have heard you see jesus doing some teaching he said listen you you i know that there is a popular teaching out there and and i know that many of you have accepted this teaching you have heard that it have been said thou shall love our neighbor and do what some of y'all still holding on to that doctrine all right he says you've heard the teaching love your neighbor if you're good to me and you're close to me you treat me right i'm gonna treat you right the teaching that jesus is referring to but if you do me dirty i'ma do you dirty you love me i'm gonna love you you do me good i'm gonna do you good you give me a gift i'm gonna turn around and give you a gift you come and support my event then i'm gonna come and support your event you act shady to me i'ma act shady to you you ignore me i'ma ignore you you don't wanna talk to me i ain't gonna talk to you you disrespect my children i'ma disrespect yours you take my candy bar i'm taking yours that's the teaching jesus is referring to he says you've heard this teaching he says there have been people who have actually who have actually taught you that how people treat you is how you should treat them i want to let you know that's not christianity if people treat you good it actually doesn't matter if people treat you bad it actually doesn't matter your response is consistent in spite of another person's behavior so when you get to verse 44 he says this but i say unto you love your love your enemies uh does anybody know who your your enemies are and you put somebody in your mind right now there's somebody who's done you wrong and then jesus backdoors and says i know you've received this type of teaching ignore that i want you to love for the first time they're hearing a message that no one is teaching and jesus is teaching this message for the first time and he says your enemies i need you to love them maybe you don't understand the people who broke your heart the people who abandoned you the people who forsake you the people who stole from you the people who who are ruined your reputation the people who drug you through the mud those individuals the bible says jesus is doing some teaching he says listen what i want you to do is i want you to love them he says i i want you to love them love your enemies and then i want you to bless them that what that curse you i want you to do good to them that hate you and then i want you to pray for them which despitefully have anybody ever been used he said you've been used have you ever had an epiphany one day that you've been manipulated is it isn't that devastating that you realize that the things that you've been doing and the and the heart that you gave somebody took that for their own benefit and the revelation that you just have uh that hey listen i think i'm being manipulated i think i'm being deceived hey i think i was lied to jesus says those individuals that despitefully use you i want you to pray for them i want you to pray for them many of you you remember the story of job and you remember how his friends came and they visited job and after they came and they visited job uh they end up talking about him and said surely you must have sinned and they started persecuting job and job that tried to convince them i didn't do anything wrong they were they were bad visitors they should have never been a part of the visitation ministry they should have never went to the hospital to go they were horrible friends and saying you you know you messed up but we was not really preached about at the end jesus god told tells job in order for me to restore everything back to you that was one thing that job had to do if you've never read it before at the end of job we talked about how job got sick and his children died he lost all of his possessions uh he was scraping balls off of his body his friends were coming out his wife was saying why don't you curse god and die and job is sitting in this state and he's in a really bad state and then god comes at the end and says listen i am gonna restore your health and i'm gonna give everything you lost back to you but there is one thing job that you have to do there's one thing job that you have to do and if you don't do this thing it won't be restored he says you're gonna have to pray for your friends who talked about you the only thing the only thing god required job to do for restoration was pray for the people who talked about ain't that powerful a lot of people who read job and they get inspiration from job and say oh the faith that job had the thing but one of the biggest hurdles that job had to overcome while he was lying in and what was perceived as a death bed god said listen i'll give it all back to you i'll make you rich again i'll give you strength i'll restore your relationship i'll give you more children i'll give it all back to you but the people who talked about you the people who looked down on you the people who told you you were a sinner and you wasn't those individuals you got to pray for them does anybody know the end of the story that how joe got everything back but what has glossed over so many times is he had to take the time to pray for the people who inflicted him what if if you don't get anything else out of the sermon this morning what if god is waiting for you to show some love to the people who wounded you so you can get your blessing what if your next blessing is connected to the person who caused you to bleed and god is saying listen love them and pray for them and god they cursed me okay your response is give them a blessing brother williams bleep bleep bleep bleep oh bless your brother some of y'all are not some of y'all are not there at that place yet oh oh oh bless you god bless your journey amen you're wounded you cry and god says your response is contradictory to their behavior can i read it again for those who who are who have a hard time receiving it they got to read it again verse 44 but i say unto you love your enemies bless them that curse you do good to them that hate you do good to them that what hate you you know in order to do good to somebody who hates you in order to do good period it requires thought right if it was somebody's birthday and you were going to the birthday party go get a gift regardless of what gift is it requires what it requires thought so here's here's what jesus is teaching and this is some difficult teaching the person who hates you i want you to take the time and i want you to think about a good way to bless them the person that you know doesn't like you i want you to and even if you're not there yet then you know start at dollar general you may be maybe you're not at kirkland you know but start at dollar general and and find a card and find something that i'll find a way to bless them give them a gift card open the door uh uh uh uh think about an opportunity or way that you may be able to not only maybe bless them but bless a family there's a phrase we used to say uh kill them with that really comes from the teaching of matthew chapter five you did me wrong and my next response is i'm gonna love on you amen so if this is the teaching of jesus then how come church can be such a hateful place because we may be operating from a different system and the system that we may be operating from is of the world you do me wrong and i'm gonna do you all if you do somebody wrong then the love of god is not in you because if the love of god is in you it disciplines my behavior no matter what happens many of you you have stories of of times in your life where you experience such times of pain and sorrow and the only thing that you wanted to do was hurt somebody i want to let you know that's not the love of god that is in you and we all have it in us so to respond this way is not natural to respond this way is not natural it has to be taught you know you have to practice this do do you know this this requires strain and this requires effort and this requires something supernatural that you don't possess all on your own because if there was a time when you were really really angry you didn't want to hear no scripture you don't want nobody to pat you on the back and you don't want nobody to say well look you got to love him i don't want to hear about love and then you know what we want to do i want to tell my story it doesn't matter how bad your story is god is requiring all of us to operate on a whole nother whole another level why should we do this look at verse 45 if you don't love like this and jesus is teaching us to love like this that you may be the what that you may be the children of your father which is in which is in heaven so here's what the scripture is saying if i can learn to love right if i can learn to love right then god looks at me as a child but when you walk around bitter and hateful full of gossip full of malice then that is not the child of god it is only when you start walking in love that you actually become the child of god so think about this when you get baptized you get baptized into jesus christ but unless you learn what love is you will never fully become baptism puts you in christ but to become a child of god and to fully embrace the image of god it is an individual that walks in love and i i did a a workshop on yesterday and i was asking those i said um how many of you are loving and everybody raised their hand matter of fact there was one sister in the back she was so proud because she really thought i'm a loving i'm a loving person i said well you don't really know that you're loving until i do something hateful you say that you're a loving person well we'll see and the only way for me to know that you're really a loving person is i have to watch you in front of a hateful person you say that you're forgiving who in here is a forgiving person i only know that you're a forgiving person when you get hurt you're not you're not a forgiving person if you blow your top and you go off and you're going to start and attack the person you're not a forgiving person somebody somebody says i'm sweet uh you're not you're not sweet you're not sweet unless i see you in front of some bitter and sour people come on sir who who are you in christ right now who who do you say you are and then what what is life revealing about you and i can't i can't be around certain people you're not a forgiving person i am a loving person but you know church folk then you're not a loving person if you can only be around certain groups of people then you're not fully embracing the child of god because a child of god walks in love with those who persecute them and those who hurt and those who are evil and those who have damaged you and you still show love then you're walking in the light of god but if every time you get hurt you run if every time you get hurt you retreat if every time you get hurt you're cutting and you're you're fighting and you're defending yourself then you're not walking in the love of god you're missing your blessings because actually to walk in the love of god you got to learn how to deal with pain you gotta learn how to deal with pain if you're gonna actually walk with jesus christ if you don't know how to be uh get wounded and steal love to get talked about and you still don't lose your disposition when the whole world comes at you and they call you evil and they call you a sinner and they and they bring up your past and they and they poke at you and they lie about you and if you still can't stand there with a smile and even if you don't smile but with the love of god in your heart then you're not reflecting the image of christ see in order to be in christ you can't be weak because in order to be in christ you got to be able to take pain i don't know any strong christians that have not gone through horrendous things we all have we all have stories but we all don't respond to those things the same way he says in verse 45 that you may be the children of your father which is in heaven for he maketh his son to rise on the evil and on the good and center for rain on the just and the unjust for if you love them which love you you don't get a reward you know like after service if after service i only talk to the people that i like the scripture tells me i don't get a reward for that if i'm only good to the people who good to me i don't get a reward for that you may have a lot of friends because all your friends do good things for you and you do good things for them god said you don't get any reward for that god god is not going to bless you because you're good to the people who are good to you i only want to be in a place where everybody treats me right you get no reward for that think about that if god uh the bible says in hebrews 11 and verse 6 for he that come up to god must believe that he is and that he is a you got to believe that god is a rewarder god is in the rewarding business god wants to reward you but but god is not going to reward you if you're only around people who love you so when do i get my reward i get my reward when i'm connecting with people who don't treat me right and i'm still showing love to them that's when you get your greatest reward church can be a very dangerous place because we'll like coming here and we won't fool with anybody else but we don't get a reward for just staying in here it is when we say amen and we just miss service and you got a you got a neighbor across the street and he may be violent in his home or you may uh have friends or you may have people in your in your community that you really don't get along with and god is saying listen go in there and show some love because light is supposed we're supposed to be the light of the wood we're supposed to be the light of the world but if we stay in these four walls then then the world will never see the light because we only like hanging around people who are just like us and if we just hang around people who just like us we don't get a reward i may enjoy your company but if all i if if all the time that i spend is just with us i'm missing my blessings i really want god to bless me and when i see when i see my enemies the next time you see your enemies don't don't skip out the room the next time you see your enemy don't go the other way the next time you see your enemy i want you to put your head up high i want you to straighten your clothes how you doing it's good to see you i got my reward today you know what we do you we we avoid our enemies we avoid the people who hurt us and if you're not careful you'll end up talking about the people who've wounded you and then you're really losing your reward the next time the next time you see somebody who called you great pain think about how to do good to them because that's your reward i know the same popular teacher somebody said but who doing that i don't know i don't know nobody who doing that because the teaching of this world is what avoid drama now if anybody who want to avoid drama i'll be the first one in line though i don't like drama but i also realize to walk with with christ is a life fuller is a life full of drama because you're gonna have to deal with pharisees and sadducees and you're gonna have to deal with wolves and and the goats that's in the church and you're gonna have to deal with the devil and his serpents and all of his you're going to have to have some drama you're going to have to deal with judas you're you're going to have to deal with jezebel's you're going to have to deal with opposition the problem is a lot of us are not getting blessed because we're not handling our conflicts well and if you're not going to handle your conflicts well then you're going to miss your blessing and then now god has to send somebody else into the world to be able to show love so so god can't count on the church of christ to show love into the world so now he got to go get the red cross anybody who sees the symbol of the red cross everybody says oh yes and they donate to the red cross because they're it doesn't matter the red cross won't turn you away no matter of your color your creed don't matter of your general no man matter of fact the red cross is going to care for anybody who's in need but god can't count on the church because we're selective so we got to go outside for another institution to do actually what the church is supposed to do because we're selective we we have a we have a threshold of how much we can take and i oh i i i can't take i can't take it then god can't use you if you can't take a lot then god can't use you if you can only be around certain people god can't use you that there are some people they only want to be in in little small circles and they don't want to let nobody else in there there are some churches they don't like visitors so what you doing here i'm here for jesus if you don't move if you don't move and stop blocking the door because i don't hey don't you don't you come in here and start mess don't you don't you coming because we're trying to just keep it it's a nice little country club we're just trying to keep this really really really nice and and and the problem is until you learn how to deal with conflict god gonna keep sending you more until you learn the problem is you're not passing the test and guess what after you pass the test guess what it's like mario brothers it's level two now they thought they start throwing a little bit fast it gets harder and and it gets harder and then it gets harder and then after you get to a really good place then the next level level is extremely hard some somebody says i don't i don't understand why this keeps happening to me because you don't know how to respond in love so the last time you got hurt think about how you responded the last time you got hurt what did you do how did you communicate what words did you use and did you go at the person or did you respond in love and if you did it you failed you missed your blessing the next time somebody mistreats you you gotta look at it as a christian this is a blessed moment because you're doing me dirty and you know what i'm gonna do i'm not gonna say anything negative about you i'm not gonna i'm not gonna say anything i'm not gonna say anything hey did you i didn't hear anything i'm not gonna no and god bless them god i pray god i pray right now that you watch over their children and that you bless them on their job let nothing happen let nothing happen on their job or to their front wheels or to anything god i pray for safety you're going to miss your blessing moment amen and guess what's going to happen matter of fact jesus said like this offenses will come offenses will come the next time your children hurt you respond in love the next time your spouse hurts you that's your blessed moment respond in love the next time your co-workers do something behind your back and they send emails to to get something together then responding respond in love the next time a church member do something and they hurt don't miss your blessing moment because what does the bible say for if you love them which love you what reward have you do not even the publicans the same and if you salute your brethren look what's the scripture say if you salute your brethren only what do you more than others do not even the publicans so the bible says if all we do are our greek people who we get along with we're just like the world if we're only nice to people who are nice to us you are just like the world there is no difference somebody can come off the street and into the church and say yeah well we do this too there's no difference there's a click over here and there's a click over here and this clip don't talk to that click and there's people these people don't talk to these people and there's a division here and it's like hey somebody says well i know this i'm i'm from the streets we do this in the street this street don't talk to that street this block don't talk to that block and if you from this neighborhood then we good if you from that other neighborhood we might talk about maybe not you stay over there and we say over here you stay in your core and i stay in my corner you just like the world he says rise to another level and be therefore perfect even as your father which is in heaven is what perfect in this text doesn't mean that uh flawless or you've never made a mistake it's to maturity it's rising to a whole another level where you can receive the things and the promises of god that god is in the blessing business and god wants to bless you but what you don't understand is how you're responding and how you deal with your pain is actually killing your blessings the circles that you're choosing to stay in because you know what you're trying to do you're actually trying to protect yourself from being hurt i cannot talk about the love of god without talking about pain because if you're going to show love then you got to be able to show love in response to pain and what god is telling you is the bigger rewards and the great rewards are not in the people who already love you the rewards from heaven they come from the people who don't and so when you go into certain environments and you know nobody likes me here then get ready to get blessed and they doing you dirty they are doing you dirty they are talking about you behind and you know what you want to do you want to defend yourself you ain't going to talk about me you don't have to fight your battles actually fall back and show some what show some love it don't cost nothing to pray for an enemy your fico score don't go down because you pray for your enemies you don't lose anything about about praying for anybody who's done you wrong you know what you have to do you have to get over that feeling of injustice you have to get over that feeling of being your own defender i ain't gonna let nobody do that to me again but what you don't realize is what god can do to them it's far worse than the compound adjectives that you can put together and say about them i'm gonna give them a piece of your mind but your blessings are gonna go along right along with it if you would have just if you would have just held your mouth if you would have just been quiet if you would have learned to be able to take the pain i don't know if anybody ever taught you but as a christian you got to be able to take pain there are some there are some blessings that i've received that i know i would have lost if i were responded in different ways and sometimes sometimes god will allow you to experience the pain and he'll use that pain to change you and bless you and and and elevate you and you'll be surprised uh uh i did a i did a sermon one time and somebody didn't like my sermon believe that somebody didn't like my sermon and they came at me and they came at me publicly but if you know me i don't i don't go back and forth for nobody public i may get in your grill private but i'm just never gonna be i don't i don't do that and so i saw all of it and i didn't respond and found out uh they they really didn't hear the whole lesson and they went back and and heard the whole lesson still hadn't responded and then they publicly apologized and they said i'm sorry for everything that i've said in there and i don't have to respond at all god's going to work on you god god gonna address that i don't have to fight every you you exhaust yourself trying to defend yourself and your reputation and they talking about you you know what they said about jesus they said he was an alcoholic jesus was walking around with mary magdalene and martha and mary they said well why did single man walk around with all these women they they called jesus a blasphemer because he said he was from the son of god and they was ready to kill him because they they call him a blasphemer the bible says they came up and and and people lied on them and did all kind of you never read of jesus running from town to town talking about it ain't me i love people i'm i'm i'm a good person you never you never read of jesus trying to defend himself matter of fact when jesus was on trial and they were saying something jesus said whatever you say see when you confident in yourself and you know what god has done for you you let people talk because you know what i don't have the time somebody said is it true what they said about you first of all that means i would have to listen to what they said and then i would be exhausted trying to chase and go and talk to everybody of what i think they heard or said or talked or that's exhausting don't exhaust yourself sometimes god will allow your reputation to to to be cast down so that you can see all the fake people around you amen all the people who say that they loved you sometimes god will allow certain things to happen to you so you can see your real friends oh when you when you see when you see people give you side then you're like oh and the one of the most beautiful things and when you know that that's happening to you how do you respond i gotta respond in love you gotta respond in kindness you gotta respond in prayer last scripture i i wanna take you to i want you to very quickly turn your bibles to matthew 22. matthew 22 but when the pharisees had heard that he had put the sadducees to silence they gather together jesus has been doing some teaching they're coming to him with different subjects and then the bible says that the pharisees after he had they had stumped the sadducees they came up with a question and they said okay well maybe we'll we'll catch jesus like this and the bible says in verse 36 master which is the greatest commandment in the law there are over 600 laws i believe there are 613 laws in the old testament and so they come to jesus and say listen out of all 600 or so laws which one of those laws are the greatest law is the greatest law and bible says in verse 37 and jesus said unto them you shall love the lord thy god with all your heart and with all thy soul and with all thy mind this is the first and greatest commandment do you know what the greatest commandment is is to love the greatest commandment is to love uh thou shall not kill that's not the greatest commandment thou shall not steal that's not the greatest commandment thou shall not commit adultery that's not the greatest commandment thou shall not covet that's not the greatest commandment there are a lot of commandments in the bible but the most important commandment the most important commandment is love matter of fact somebody says i want to start my spiritual journey i need to get back into the word of god i need to get back to study you know what i would encourage you to study do you know the do you know that being baptized is not the greatest commandment do you know that you need to repent the bible says in luke 13 3 i'll tell you neighbor except you repent do you know that it is a commandment that if you sin you need to repent but do you know that repentance is not the greatest commandment you have to worship god commands christians to what worship but worship ain't the greatest commandment do you know that you can come to a worship and still be in violation to god because you're not loving the love of god is i'm gonna sing and i'm gonna pray and i'm gonna take care of my feed the homeless i'm a clothes the naked and then i'm gonna do this to this i'm and i'm gonna help over here and you can do many wonderful good works but one of the things that you may be missing is the greatest commandment the greatest commandment the greatest commandment that will forever be is that you got to love god with all that is in you there are three principles with all your heart soul and mind are strength that means with everything that is in you the greatest commandment is that god says i want all of you to love me if every morning you don't get up and you don't try to give all that you have to god you're missing the greatest commandment and maybe one of the reasons we don't respond well when we face conflict is because we really have not given the best of us to god we still hold a little bit back your thoughts your ideas your passions are not all given to god so when trouble comes we don't respond like god's children because we are actually internally divided so the greatest thing that you can do this day as you go through the furtherance of this day and even through the furtherance of this week are you really giving the best of you to god are you really loving god with everything that is in you with all of your heart with all of your ideas and with all of your passions and even to the greatest depth of your understanding are you loving god and i'm not talking about loving god from your definition somebody say i love you i don't like the way you love me and it's a bad definition i don't know what your definition is it's not my definition some people try to love you from their context your definite your definition of love may be dysfunctional so you think you're loving god because you're loving god the best way but maybe you need to get back to the word of god and find out the way he wants to be loved stop loving me the best way you know how and love me the way that i'm asking for you to love love me on that level because just just because i like it don't mean you like it see if you fix me a sandwich don't put tomatoes on it i don't like tomatoes i don't like onions i don't like olives uh i don't like mustard now if you say you love me but i see mustard on there well surely this is an uneducated love all right much of our worship to god much much of our worship to god is uneducated love and you really think you're loving god but you're uneducated and god said i wish you could love me better because this your definition of love i don't even call that love i just call it an attempt to do something good but what i'm looking for you is for you to fulfill the greatest commandment brother williams i'm gonna try to stay away from sin staying away from sin ain't the greatest commandment i'm not gonna do anybody wrong i'm gonna treat everybody nice and i'm gonna try to pray prayer is not the greatest commandment obeying the gospel which is the death burial resurrection of jesus christ is not the greatest commandment the greatest commandment is everything that's in you the all all the three principles that make up you as a person you take all of that and you love god that's the greatest oh you think you're going to heaven because you don't lie oh you think you're going to heaven because you give or you think you're going to heaven because you don't bother nobody and there are some people who may struggle with those other things but they are striving to give all of themselves to god you're your even attempt for the greatest commandment allows god to reward you and bless you i don't know where you are this morning but the greatest thing that we need to start talking about as we begin this series are we really loving god now here's the thing if i ain't loving god right i'm probably i'm probably not loving you right if i don't know how to love god i'm probably not operating right in my relationships i'm probably not interacting with conflict well but if love is the greatest then that means every christian at some point should do a deep study on what it means to love god because why would you spend time studying any other subject or any other commandment and you skip over the greatest and that's love and maybe church is struggling because we're trying to worship god without giving all of us to god we'll give him an hour we'll give him a song we'll read a few verses but i'm not giving you my heart and maybe maybe the reason why we don't really give god our heart is because our hearts have been broken and before you really got to know who god was somebody already broke your heart so actually you never learned how to give your heart fully it's scary because the last time you did it and you gave it to somebody they mishandled it and so you never learn to actually do it again and god said i need you to trust me i'm not a human i'm not i'm not bobby all right i'm i'm i'm not i'm not this is in a human relationship this is a spiritual relationship the sermon is over and this is praying time maybe you've been hurt and you haven't responded to conflict well maybe maybe right now there's some individuals maybe there's some people right now that you need to repent to because maybe they hurt you and you didn't respond the way god asks you to respond you didn't do what god has asked you to do maybe this is an opportunity where you maybe ask god god help me out of love god help me how to love my enemies god god teach me how to love those who've persecuted me and talked about me and i'm not handling it well there are some of you you may not handle issues and pain well and i want to let you know it ain't natural to handle it well you're gonna have to pray about it and you're gonna have to
