[Music] hey everybody it's john hodgepod show instead hey uh i've been wanting to do something for a really long time and today is the day it's going to happen behind this door is the old storm shelter for the school house that we've bought used to be a community storm shelter it's pretty cool it is now my pantry and food storage so hodgepodge homestead has given you a pantry tour today don't mind this room this is our laundry room we've not gotten we haven't even painted in here yet we haven't even taken old crap off the walls yet we just do our laundry in here and store a couple things in here so behind this door something i've wanted to show my friends for a long long time so here we go to start out i took and uh i wanted to have a chart of what i had i just didn't want to have it in a binder or on paper so we got some uh chalkboard paint painted the inside frames of the door and then i graphed it out with a square and pretty much keep track of all the stuff we have well as you see the bottom is painted too because i ran out of room and i haven't got to the point of adding some of the other things that that we have stored down here but uh what i'm gonna do is i've got quartz pipes half pints and miscellaneous like some of my my flowers stored in gallon jars and whatnot but what i want to do is as i take say a jar of regular tomatoes i'm going to keep this number here as 86 but over here i'm going to mark down 85. that way i'll know where i started and i can pretty much keep track of how much of each thing i use throughout the season and because next year we're not going to grow 40 tomato plants guaranteed unless they're really cheap it's kind of like chickens if you only go for a few you come home with way more than you wanted but anyway um that's what i've done with the door i think it's pretty cool um i'm gonna do the same thing on the bottom with like i said with the rest of the stuff that we have but come on down so i'm pretty excited about this room it's been a long time coming for me my old house i had it on shelves and it was dark and you know it was a utility room and everything was just crammed in there it worked perfect it worked great for us we had all our stuff there but like i said it was just wasn't what i wanted this is what i've always wanted so i've got 12 foot ceilings in here at least and uh we might as well start right from here in this door is our uh our well pump softener and uh well and it's got a door that goes right here and what i plan on doing we have to have a lamp in there i guess for the winter for the for the pump as well but this room is going to stay cold enough where i'm thinking i'm going to be able to start hanging some salamis in here because that's my next big thing that's what i want to do i want to start making some old italian salamis and sausages and stuff like that that's another video anyway all my spices are right here some of them i've dried like mint the onions bell peppers some of that stuff the other things turmeric paprika whatever i buy that in bulk store it here and then in in our kitchen video as you saw i've got in our pantry in there i've got a bunch of these little jars right here so what i do is i cook out of these when they empty i come in here and refill and then so this these are primarily what i use all the time i've got another shelf ready because there are some other ones that uh we decided yeah we might need like what did we buy yesterday ginger yeah we bought i've never had ginger before so we bought some ginger yesterday i've had ginger for baking and stuff but you don't like ginger so it's not one that you but it smelled pretty good so i think i might and i know i eat ginger a lot like in in um asian food you know but i always have ginger but anyway um i've got another shelf ready to go for the next ones and these are just um ragu or prego jar so i've always kept them and i always get laughed at you still going to keep jars well this is why i was keeping them i had this in my mind so um we've got all our rings here i did something different i've got these hanging up back there this is when i go to can i get all my canning equipment out into the kitchen and then i just take that out with me and i've got my rings i've got one also for for regular those are just over years and years and years of buying i mean i have enough right here to can i have enough right there to can the rest of my life probably so what i'm doing is as i'm going through them if i got any rust on them or any corrosion going i just pitch it and i grab a new one so anyway into the rest of the room so this door here goes to the outside of the up into the backyard um i got a ladder here because i can't reach some of the stuff on the upper shelves i always start up high so up high i've got all my meat processing items my grinder which i lost the head to my grinder i do not know where the blade went it makes me mad because that's a nice one and i can't find where to buy a new one anyway i go from there into my jerky making stuff some of my electric fry pads crop old crock pot extra and then my roaster ovens come down to here and we've got you know my um pressure canners these three this one's from heather's uh grandma campbell and these are from my sister-in-law's mom and i need to get parts for all three of these and this year of course you couldn't get parts so they're on hold to get working and i think i've got an issue with a couple of the weights on them they don't they don't belong to those so i have to figure that out too but my old dandy here my american canner and my very first one of presto they work great but it's great when you can have four of them though because i've got a gas gas stove and i've got a camp chef stove that i can on also so we come around i've got my water bath canners and my stock pots and all my lids and then i go into my lamp oils my lamps case we lose power um and then some wagner roasters and i just really love these my water bath canners and then we go into you know essentials we are not that those people yeah these have been accumulating way over time we never needed toilet paper when there wasn't any yeah we've always been this you know the type to keep it on hand just in case it's not hoarding when you're prepping ahead of time right and our goal is to have the paper towels into that corner all the way up and the same thing with toilet paper you know we're not going and buying 10 at a time we buy one at a time when we go grocery shopping then i got some of my dutch ovens up there the rest of my dutch ovens are stored outside um i primarily take them camping with us and stuff but and then we've got you know some some first aid items some you know washcloths peroxide all that kind of stuff this is just i work off these shelves here so my canning books our seeds our fillet knives and i picked this up the other day at a little garage sale it's an old biscuit cutter really cool i thought it was really neat so i bought it and just one of those things okay did you say first aid stuff yep all first aid band-aids bandages that kind of stuff toothpaste extras ibuprofen so then over here on this shelf this is an old bookshelf used to have um these are all my lids but when we were buying lids way back every time a goal a dollar general back in since fall i would just pick up pick up a couple and boy did it work out good um because of the shortage that happened um so i've got regular wide mouth and i've got those are plastic things because we do a lot of store a lot of stuff dry in my main pantry and i tell you what if you guys don't have these things for dry canning these work really really good however for me they don't work really good with my um food saver food saver for some reason i just don't get a good suction on it so but the needy homesteader here in michigan she had a uh an opening like she opened it up when she got involved lisa also did lisa sutton yeah but this is a foodsaver fresh saver and you just take this little rubber part right here and it fits over that hole and it works great i've got a video that i'll show you guys on that here soon so anyway like i said i've got my funnels and everything and all my jar lifters and you know i've got five of them but you go garage sale and you pick them up for cheap it's always good to have a few extras and so um i didn't grow enough potatoes this year but i started candy's potatoes back in march when we came back in april when we got back from our uh our shortened trip just because i was born it was fun to do i was teaching my brother-in-law how to can so we did potatoes we did some carrots then i go into my peppers my tomato juice from this year and for some reason my tomato juice this year turned out real meaty i don't know what i did different but it tastes really really good it's really sweet and i've still got i think five five gallon jars of tomatoes some are green or buckets you have five gallon buckets but i've got acorn squash um what is that butternut butternut this is butternut this is acorn and then tomatoes this is all tomatoes from this year um just whole and then i've got tomatoes mixture stewed each one of these are 5d um these jars or shelves are the shelves that you saw on the previous video me building them and uh they're great i i did that end up adding extra shelving um that was because you didn't want the shelves sitting or the jar is sitting right on jar sitting on top of jars like here these are these are dry canned and they've got lids on them we actually have a video on dry canning the rice coming out soon but this i'm going to have a shelf built here too i've got the board i've got the boards cut out my barn i just have to put them in here yet but i was when i built the shelves i was going to see if i could buy the extra shelving well i'm thinking i paid 100 bucks for each one of these shelves there's four of them and i'm thinking okay if i just buy you know the shelving i'm probably gonna i should just go buy an extra shelf and just use the shelving not the ends but instead i just saved some money made about a plywood i think a sheet of plywood cost me 40 bucks or something like that and i had the 2x4 so good to go there okay then uh we're going to some other products here this is some uh a pickle mix i got this from uh the bratz uh they kind of got tired of everything being pickled and we love the pickled stuff so they gave us a few jars i think i only got one or two left then uh i can butter i've got my my coffee started if the crap ever hits the fan i'm screwed because that's all the coffee we have and so i want to like quadruple this or even more and i want to get some whole beans dried dry candles and then have those two on hand but i've got the popcorn tea this is all honey back here and then this year we did um we made a mullen tincture and i did that on july 30th and it's supposed to go for 90 days i think i think it was eight weeks only eight weeks yeah so it's probably good probably ready so i'm gonna have to strain this out and uh use that for if we get any colds or flues this year it's good for respiratory or ear infections yeah stuff like that so like i said we're down here with the rice earlier and i started 10 for 10 you know i'd love to store this down here in boxes however i've got mice we live in the country i mean you live in the city and have mice but the mice will tear into those boxes like i just found this morning i'm gonna have to do something with it around it we don't have a lot of it but we do have some i'm gonna have to store it in something other than this because the mouse had chewed into one i've discovered it this morning so right back there there's a trap ready to get the next mouse that comes no more free ramen over here this is all of my um our jams and jellies and uh again a mouse can chew through jiffy mix bottle mouse is not going to chew through that one box equals one half pint you got to pack it in there but then i put one of those air absorbers in there oop didn't work on that one i'll have to redo that and what the other ones are i wonder why that one didn't hold i have to cook with that one but um these are pretty cheap and it's it's a great thing to have later on down the road and then i've got some dry some dried meals we experimented with that a couple years ago so basically it's dehydrated everything uh freeze-dried meat and then your noodles um they're okay they're kind of supposed to be like a hamburger helper type of meal and then um i go to the my amish store and i buy the beans so i've got pinto navy and black beans because we love our soups soup while i'm getting an echo over here with these pans but i love to make soups with them and like i did that a couple years ago and i'd probably put a dent in them and they're so cheap easy to use um come down here under this shelf and we just got some condiments we got some canned fruit i'm really lacking on this part of my storage as far as canned soups and fruits and all that but again i think we got to figure out something with our powders like our gravy mixes and and taco mix and all that because the mouse is going to chew through here too so i'm going to have to figure out something to put these in uh we got a prego because i use them for my spices it's quick and easy for spaghetti and then over here i've got uh corn and potatoes those are really about the only two vegetables i really like to eat just out of a can i mean i'll eat fresh stuff all the time but so anyway we make we make a lot of corn casseroles and put potatoes in a lot of our roasts and stuff like that i mean i'm using those too that we can however it is what it is when they're that cheap you can't not get them dollar general or you know get them from 50 cents a can or 49 cents a can and the cool thing is my kids are starting to do this they're starting to see it and pick up on it and anyway okay so we move over here uh this is all chicken from chickens that we raised down our homestead in the past and um some of this like i said when i was bored when we were before we bought a house i bought some chicken breasts and stuff and legs and canned them up that's mainly these but um then we go into our chicken broth got lots of broth because it's so great to cook with add it to your stews or your whatever you know then come down here this is all pork that i purchased um my pig was all that was all gone before you went on the road and then this is venison broth from our deer um in 18. so you use that just like beef breath yeah just like me bro nice and then um i've got some beef canned beef uh this is some uh blast in my goat this is rabbit and then down here this is why deer hunt everybody this is all venison these are six deep 13 of them at six deep so that's uh 88 don't look at me i can't math that quick i think it might be 88 jars well let me let me see venison 70. so my math is whale that's okay yeah that's okay i wasn't even gonna try but something else you guys should really look at getting whenever you're at the store and i try to buy some whenever i'm there it's cheese cloth you can use it for so many things other than just cheese you're straining your tomatoes or whatever we'll probably use it to strain that mullein out of that i'm sure it probably will and um it's so cheap i've in the past i've tried to wash it out and dry it but it just it's terrible but you can also wrap your meat in it when you're processing your meat just keep the flies off of it i mean i have deer bags that i use and i do reuse those because they're they're a little stronger built a little thicker but um and again i built built the shelves here and i was thinking about doing a third shelf it would fit but i would really have you know i probably only have to go would be outcomes close but if i needed to and you know deer hunting's just started this is all from the deer i got this year i got a doe in the early doses and there it is you know 20 what i think six or five six times five thirty yeah they're only five deep um five ten fifteen twenty twenty five thirty thirty five forty four five fifty 50 55 60. 65. but there's three or four back in here that are tucked in that's how i did that okay so enough on medicine we all know that i'm a hunter and that's what we eat primarily so we'll come down here and um these are all flowers each one of these are gallon jars i've got oxygen absorbers in them with the these lids you can buy these at our amish store sells them the lids are 95 cents each but i'll use them and with our flour we put our flour in the freezer for about four days it kills any of the bowl weebles or any other bug that might be in there laying eggs so you don't have any surprises it doesn't really hurt anything but who wants that when you're cooking you know you don't want to see that no movement in my flour please i've got enough flour here to make plenty of bread throughout the season and christmas cookies and again this is storage so in our main pantry in the in the house we've got what we work with and i think i've got four bags in there right now that i don't have freezer room so eventually when i get room i'll put one in there and then i'll just continue with the jars and then i go into uh i got two gallons of brown brown sugar iodized salt i've got plain salt i've got sea salt and i've got pink himalayan salt to me salt salt you know there for a while everybody had pink himalayan salt and it is what it is you know if it's there that's i'm going to use and then huge score this was hard to get for a long long time so i think we had three or four packages left in our main pantry and then walmart started getting it again so every time we've gone we just buy one or two and pick up a couple of them and add them add them to the jar whoa this lid was a dollar nineteen oh you got ripped off the royal oak general store that's our little amish market they uh they played the game this year with kova too i mean they got to make their money i understand but you know when you can go there and buy your a tube of wide mouth lids for i think it was 20 dozen for 64. or you could get a tube of regular mouth lids 22 dozen for 64. we bought a tube of each that's what some of these that are in plastic you know i broke them into units of 12. so i know how many i had because that's what they come in in the boxes and they got wise to nobody else having any so they broke theirs down into into groups of 12 and sold them that way and last two times i've been to our local army store they've been out also so excuse me but down on this bottom shelf is just um large cooking items like these big bowls i use when i can i like to add a couple more of those of those and then um big roaster oven and one knot and then this i've got a big bag of diatomaceous earth and then down here it's whole wheat this thief yep just seeds i really have to look into how to use that a little bit more oh we kind of forgot this stuff here too oh um dry canned pancake mix again if it's in a box it's not going to last as long mice could get into it there you go and then this is oatmeal rolled oats rough cut they're my favorite i need to probably quadruple this and triple this yeah you go through a lot of oatmeal in the meantime and then this is sage from out in the herb garden um i'm thinking i'm gonna let this dry a little bit longer i dried it on the dehydrator but i think i'm gonna break it up and then whenever we like buy jalapenos or whatever we have like half jalapeno left i'll put them on dehydrator and eventually i'll have a whole jar and these are great i do the same thing with you know you get to clean out your refrigerator on sunday or the day before your trash goes out oh crap you know if we've got a thing of mushrooms in there they're about to go bad cut them up put them on a dehydrator there you go mushrooms same with onions green onions dried green onions i think i've got green onion tops these are just regular onions i chopped up but and i've got them over there too and i've got them in the kitchen so that is uh pretty much our pantry i'm so excited that uh we were able to finally get this done and show you guys and um it's one of my proud things you know and in our homesteading life and like i said i've always wanted one this room is going to be perfect in the summer it does get a little warm because the sun sets to the west this way and you do feel a little warmth in here but it's always dark and um it's usually cooler than the rest of the house because of the cement here up i mean it's all whoever did whatever they did i don't know but um i i would like to maybe reconfigure the what's stacked here and maybe put an air conditioner there put an air conditioner in there in the summer to keep it a little cooler that way i could i could potentially have racks here and have salamis hanging in here all year long because that is something i really want to get into and uh i'm gonna because i have a wife that will love me um so yeah i want to work on that that possibility and um you know i've got lots more room here i can put shelves up on that wall i can put some more shelves up there that just goes into another another room of the house where they they blew insulation in up there i don't know what it was for before that but it just goes that's above heather's office so um anyway guys this is our pantry our food storage whatever else you want to call it and um i've just like i said i've been really excited to get this video out to you guys and um i hope you enjoyed it uh i sure did i sure enjoyed putting it all together i love spending time in here i do a lot of my work in here you know like my dry canning i'll do right in here and i'll set up a little table and stuff and have at it right in here but but again i hope you enjoyed it so thanks again for watching and here at the hodgepodge homestead we love canon we love preserving we love being prepared and you should too bye
