FLYING TO HAWAII TO CONFRONT A SCAMMER

what's up everybody we are Trilogy media and we're about to bust a scammer in [Music] there are scammers everywhere even in Hawaii today we're showing up to the front door of a money mule scammer who's expecting a check of a hundred and fifty thousand dollars stolen from a victim of a PCH scam a common scam based mainly out of Jamaica where they pose as organizations like Publishers Clearinghouse or in the case of today's scammer Readers Digest they tell the victim they've won a life-changing amount of money but before they can receive that money they have to send a payment first to cover the taxes of the winnings the details vary from scammer to scammer but the end goal is the same get the victim to send as much money as possible either through a wire transfer or sending a payment through a cash Mule the PCH scammers are also notorious for re-scamming the same victims over and over again and even turning them into mules themselves without them even realizing our scammer today goes by David and he's been baited by Rey and chappie over at modern Paul scammates they're playing the roles of Galen and his assistant Melody my first name is Gabe last name is uh apparently I've won something whom the scammer tells are winners of 2.5 million dollars oh my goodness oh my goodness the Reader's Digest do have a category C winnings for you you want a 2.5 million dollars certified cashier's check oh my goodness and a brand new car 2023 Cadillac welcome to the life of Financial Freedom but they first have to remit 250 000 to cover the tax of the prize winnings the federal government requires that they are taxes and fees that have to be paid up front that's what you're saying is I owe 10 of 10 is my taxes so I owe 250 000 correct the scammer wants that paid in two separate installments if I want to get the library I have to dip into my savings account and pull out 250 000 is that a problem the first being 100 fifty thousand dollars sent to a man named Russell at this apartment in Honolulu the first payment you say you can made tomorrow will be for a hundred and fifty thousand correct right because I have a hundred and sixty three thousand in my savings and he wants it sent to Russell via a certified check written to Russell's name alrighty not a problem so you think your bank won't give you any forms of problem for you to get that cashier's check for a hundred and fifty thousand corrector now a real check in Russell's name means that Russell himself is the only one who can cash it and to this person you're gonna make out the check do this is a merchant Banker who works with the IRS so we're going to track down Russell and confront him at his front door and see what he has to say about it so therefore once you make the payment of this agent he takes the check in and make sure all the taxes has been paid and make sure all the government city and state stamp tax is is approved is on and your cashier's check okay extra shout out to Ray and chappie for the hours and hours of work they put into these scam baits this is Melody I work for Galen oh Mr Galen Parker yep wonderful wonderful wasting the scammers time as well as getting identifying information for numerous money mules all over the United States and of course reporting them accordingly they've sent a dummy package via overnight delivery to Hawaii and given the scammer the tracking number I did make it like I said signature required and told him that had to be there tomorrow morning okay all right I'm putting our cashmere Russell in the perfect position to what was what's all the importance in this particular package what was he sending out he never told you what he sent out I I get a bunch of packages for the people that work here and this one just is starting to sound very suspicious to me it doesn't sound like business related so I just said it's weird I never get an end user that starts calling with all this question about packaging it's usually just parked or nothing that that would cause somebody to be calling me and then calling from multiple numbers and say that it's not weird that you have multiple numbers because that is weird well I don't I don't call you from multiple numbers well you did yesterday you did yesterday and then you told me that you didn't have another number and that wasn't yours so that was the first red flag I had from you is that I literally said to you why are you calling me from multiple no you hold on I'm talking I said to you why are you calling me for multiple numbers and I told you the number and you said no that's not me no you didn't you talk I have it right here I have it right here the number that it's your other number the one I replied to don't try to you're trying to do the circle jerk it doesn't work with me okay it doesn't work with me it is a six eight outside it's your other number it's your other number okay okay you're trying to get wrapped around the actual it doesn't why don't you just listen no why don't you listen to me I asked you if you called me from another number I'm gonna keep interrupting me remember and doing the circle jerk again okay so yesterday can you hear me here suddenly when I said tracking number you remember interesting then you said oh oh okay now I remember even though it was five seconds ago that whole thing started raising red flags this is very nice it would be yeah but it wasn't stolen from somebody yeah oh I see am I in trouble or something no I'll tell you who we are so we're not law enforcement we're investigative journalists we work with the media and we're investigating scams online scams we work for a company called Trilogy media before okay and we'll talk about that but this is a Reader's Digest scam where they promise large cash winnings to people and then they have them have to pay the taxes ahead of time it's a scam based out of Jamaica primarily uh but your address has come up as a receiver of this money from one of our victims who was instructed to send 150 Grand with a check written to you to your name meaning you're the only one that can cash it right so what is that about you know I'm I don't know I'm because I like I said I got scam before maybe this could be a scam too I'm not sure well it's definitely a scam because there's no check in there we're following the money to see who's guilty of this I see and you're involved somehow and we're just trying to get your side of the story because we work with uh we're journalists but we work very closely with federal agents and we when we make reports uh to try to take these scammers down I have my associate on the phone named chappie gray who deals a lot with the victims involved with these chappie do you want to say hi this is Russell hi absolutely hi Russell can you hear me okay sure yeah I'm good okay and so I have been following this from the beginning just so you know I know who this camera is I have this contact given your name as somebody who is going to cash the checks to take a percentage and then fuel that money on the scammer which is your legal and instead of setting the sending the threads out to your address I sent Rosie out to your address to see if we can get more information and instead of getting you in trouble can help educate others on what's happening okay I worked with like I said a lot of people and I see this every single day so what we're looking from you is for some help so that when I report this to the friends and I work at the first stage I can explain to them where you come in and where you don't come in but I'm assuming that you were scams and they're trying to tell you way to beat you so what they've done is they've brought a woman and they are taking every sense that this person has and lying to them saying that they won a uh 2.5 million dollars in the car and all they have to do is pay the taxes and it didn't matter that they were making every strength of their bank accounts not being able to buy medication or food camera told them that it would be okay because you're going to win all this money they told me right to check out to you because you work for the company you are an agent for Reader's Digest and yet it would be cashing the check and sending this on the arrests so can you explain to us how you expand and we understand where they're where you're supposed to send this money on this but I don't have no information of where am I supposed to send I don't know nothing about this until I had a text but they didn't send tell me to send to anybody what did the text say exactly it just said that you're receiving something from UPS and that's all from and who said that to you who said it I don't know it was just a text I just erased it have you ever received money like this for real before ever because I I like I said the only thing it was supposed to be I got scammed before Oh what kind of what happened when you got scammed well I got um they took I bought some stuff from I sent money and it wasn't where they gave me back to the product that I got I actually like it was was before roosters how much did you lose 1800 okay yeah but it had nothing to do with like a prize winning or a lottery time like what you guys are doing right how did you come across of that person who texted you is it the same from the rooster scam no no it's it's just you know how people just send you things like that nobody's sending me pickup packages something doesn't make sense that person has to know you how he initially got your phone number see I don't know I don't know anything about it is it what's up Facebook or something yeah I don't know I don't know what's going on they gave us specifically your name and address to mail and it's not and a lot of times they'll use cash so send cash but this one specifically is a check address to Russell did they tell you how much money you're gonna get a cut percentage you're having a male coming in from UPS so just can I see those messages please I erased it because I I don't I think it's a scam because I don't want to get um let's just theoretically speaking let's say if there is a hundred fifty thousand dollar check right now okay in this in this envelope okay so it's arrived to you right what would you do with that money that does not belong to you and those messages already been erased if I could send it back to them because I don't want to Ascender to ascend whoever's sending it to me I don't know what's going on what I don't know who even lose that because they just said I don't know because I erased it it's just like say you're there's a whatever kind of stuff they put on top of so I don't know the person let me let me put it this way and chat you want to call the number and say that you have a check and see what they're going to give you instructions and that could be interesting to see because here's the deal like we're here we're gonna talk we're gonna leave we're gonna report everything that we have but do you understand what a money mule is no so that's essentially what you are right now so there's a someone scamming somebody and they're having the money go through you through people scammer so when we're just using me as a goal exactly exactly so when we send these reports in we tell them who these money mules are but if we can have like if you're being honest and you're not hiding something from us then we you know it still doesn't quite make sense to me but the more we information we can get about what you have been doing or who's contacted you will help us be able to shape the truth about who's really guilty here but it just doesn't make sense that someone would send you 150 Grand in a check written to your name to your address that you have no idea about it like I said choppy we can I like the idea I like uh David actually calling this camera and say like hey I just received check what is yes uh what is the scammer's name is David yeah what is the next step yeah Russell is here in front of me yes okay a package arrives what am I supposed to do with it right and he in theory will give you instructions on what to do it it'll help you a lot when we send this into defense as far as what happens because 150 000 is going to get their attention it's a lot of money to steal themselves and you understand that you're involved because it's your name on it right I understand that but like I said I know I had a text coming to me from they didn't see a name it just put numbers on top and then they said just um I even know what it was but you don't know even know what that number is now no why did you erase it you didn't reply to it because I always erased things that um that I think that I'm being scammed because I've been scammed before so you never replied to it no I never I just deleted it but why did you when you opened the door why did you say you know what I didn't need anything I'm expecting I'm not expecting why did you say you brought me your ID and I ask you if you're expecting hey how are you doing okay you're right yeah yeah no we just yeah were you protecting ourselves we investigators and we came uh came specifically because there is a 150 000 check that came under his name can you put that away because I don't know this is for our protection it's not not because of you guys it's like it's uh it's for us so we wanna we wanna see what these hundred fifty thousand dollars call the person sending um well the scammer is in Jamaica but the victim's name is Galen in Utah who was told to send 150 Grand on a check to you that's what we're trying to figure out why wait just digest and uh Russell works for Reader's Digest and you're an agent yeah there's no actual Reader's Digest and that you're supposedly going to pay the um IRS she says you work at Reader's Digest so what they do is they put you in the position to be a ball guy so when this all blows up and it says it gets it their hands are nice and clean and somebody in the U.S who ends up being in a lot of those crosses and the only one that has record of cashing money is you yeah the focus back on the camera in Jamaica instead of us today it could have been federal agents and this money will lead specifically to you so you you would be responsible for that 150 000 check I see you understand that so so here's where we're at it would be really helpful if you'd be willing to call we can give you the number of the guy all we want to know is where what he wants you to do well it probably should come from your number because yeah because it's would she have us leave without even knowing who we are or why we're there you know like she wasn't standing out there all she sees on the camera is three or three guys stand there like it just seems weird if the dad is engaging in a conversation with them maybe you should ask the dad who are those guys before you say yep get rid of them yep it's weird it's just all very weird that was a perfect confirmation from scammer he was like dude what are you talking about caught him kind of come on red-handed go [ __ ] deposit and that's it and you know it's certified it's it's legit he said it's okay uh do you want me to uh how do you want this to go I mean we want I can keep you know Galen as you know he was really trying to send the money in on the that you stopped it well it would be cool I think before we confront him you know Trilogy style and blow this whole thing up I think you should maybe talk to the scammer and say and just see if the scammer knows about this yet yeah because that'll be very telling because if Russell called him when we left that's also makes him more guilty so and the only way the scammer would know that this is a setup is if Russell called him so if you call the scammer and you know if he thinks everything is still going ahead then that's one thing but if he says what happened to the check where's the check then you'll know that Russell told him that because no one else told him okay so you want me to call and play dumb just that yeah just to see what happens yeah maybe just to see what he says yeah yeah what do you want me to do then we're gonna
