i flew over five times around the world all in business and first class visiting more than 20 countries trying new things and making friends along the way oh and all joined the 2020 pandemic you must stay at home how was it and what did it all cost let's find out we start my year of travel at london heathrow terminal 5. i just got into the concord lounge and i think first of all i'm going to go for an a la carte breakfast after smashing back about a bottle of lpgs i staggered over to the train to seagate where i'll grab my flight over to the us my seat today is 1a and to my surprise it's a totally full cabin personally i'm a big fan of their first on the dreamliner it's a newer more intimate cabin than the rest of their fleet well you twist my arm of course i want some more champagne our flight today over to san jose california will take around 12 hours and cover about five and a half thousand miles let's waste no time and get some food down us whilst ba doesn't offer the glitz of emirates and etihad first i still find their food to be tasty or at least pre-covered after dinner i had my bed made changed into my provided pjs and had a nap well it turned out to be quite a long nap as when i awoke we were almost in california time flies i guess when you sleep my time in california was amazing i rented a convertible ticking off much of the top sites around the city i also learned to ski over in lake tahoe which i was terrible after a few weeks in san fran it's time to get back on the road again i'm now going over to my gate to catch my flight over to la san france la is a super short hop with flight time being just under an hour i was actually pretty impressed with delta's offering for this flight especially having done this on american since which was really poor [Music] as i'm only having a layover in lax tonight i grabbed the hilton h hotel right by the airport a nice early start today as i'm off to another continent and in fact a new airline as well we're going to go to the gate now and let's see what this awesome flight in first on jail will be like welcome aboard the flight today which i'm going to be taking over to tokyo flight time is 13 hours today with a distance of five and a half thousand miles over to tokyo narita airport [Music] let's crack straight on firstly some delicious cristal champagne next up it's caviar course served simply with cream cheese and bellini's [Music] my main i went for a medium rare steak i went to change for some sleep after dinner discovering the bidet option on the toilet hmm the bedding on jiao is substantial and ordinarily i'd have slept well unfortunately the cabin was stiflingly warm which led to a broken sleep when i awoke we were not far out from tokyo [Music] yeah i don't know where else in the world this would be [Music] that was sketchy it's flight time again this time off to south korea on an ancient asiana a330 nothing too special to report on this one aside from perhaps the best in-flight food i've ever had this is called bibimbap and if you've not tried it change it immediately it's absolutely phenomenal oh and yeah there was a bit of a downside to the flight when i decided to spray aftershave in my eye right there we go we are now in seoul after over an hour transfer into the city i checked into the signal hotel this is one of the tallest in the world so guys this is the 96th floor bathroom is just like a complete overkill of marble but i love it how we're in there all right all right all for god's sake let's see this in the daylight i'll grab a fresh coffee get my bathrobe on and go sit in the bath [Music] right then guys i'm here at in in i'm trying to pronounce it incheon airport there we go gotta take it out already um it's going to be really interesting to see if this product lives up to the hype it's time for our first a380 of the trip none other than of course emirates welcome on board and been presented a lovely glass of champagne today's flight is around 10 hours and 4 000 miles over to dubai it's that time of the flight it sounds ridiculous this is definitely a bucket list tick something so surreal and quite frankly not normal showering on a plane so here are the pajamas that you get apparently they're supposed to be moisturizing now to dry my hair get some aftershave on and go back to my seat for dinner starting with a fresh salad yet boring i went onto caviar meanwhile i was poured some more p2 and then onto my steak all this eating is making me pretty tired press little button here so shall we taste test their 24 carat gold cup of coffee yeah welcome to dubai i only had a day in the emirates so tried to make the most of my time before catching my next flight emirates provide a complimentary s-class for first-class passengers it wasn't long before i was relaxing in the dedicated first-class lounge which takes up an entire floor of the terminal building i headed to the restaurant and of course went for a steak that was unbelievable uh finished with a massage i feel incredibly relaxed uh not in the right frame to go to the other side of the whole airport in order to catch my flight so now i've gotta catch this little train that takes me over to the b gates and go and catch my flight over to london now for a triple seven and not just any it's one of emirates newest and comes with quite a surprise welcome on board i have literally just got on board and i've already poured a delicious glass of champagne let's get a little more comfy in preparation for takeoff flight time today is around eight hours at a distance of three and a half thousand miles once we reach altitude i think it's time i show you just how crazy this first class product is yeah it's more individual rooms than suites and i have all of it to myself today okay i make it dinner time the menu is extensive but there's one standout caveat of course next up my table is set for maine yes you guessed it more steak finished off with some chocolate ganache and hennessy paradise yeah you'll want to look that one up with that i changed into my pjs and got into bed and yes i did have an entire suite just as a bedroom and what [Music] bye-bye right sorry we have now arrived in london today we are going to be flying over to toronto we are currently at london heathrow terminal 5 and i've got the plane behind me the a350-1000 welcome on board the a350 we're in premier economy today 24k we've got a two four two layout today i've got a window seat you can see you've got lovely big screens hopefully some charging points as well that'd be nice legroom was okay but certainly helped by several sparkling wines before takeoff pushback was pretty efficient today and within no time we were airborne flight time today is around seven hours and a distance of three and a half thousand miles over to canada so what's food like in premium economy you ask well i went for the braised beef for my main which was tender and tasty albeit it didn't look that appetizing i had some chocolate orange truffle for dessert though which was super tasty there wasn't too much else to do other than watch a movie and within a few more hours we'd arrived in toronto today you join me in a very cold toronto in fact it's about -12 and my fingers feel like they're gonna fall off anyway today we're going to be traveling over to chicago but we're going to be trying out a little boutique airline called porter airlines so i found myself on a ferry going to the airport this guy's is a billy bishop international airport in toronto as you can see this is the distance there he goes i kid you not it's an airport on its own private island i almost didn't believe the instructions i got on google and it certainly confused uber i've just come over to the departure out of japan i am in my element as somebody that is obsessed with flying this is probably one of the coolest little departure cafes i've ever come across check out this view you literally have your boarding gate there and then a view across the city could that be any cooler after plane spotting for a bit it's time to get on board the dash 8 turbo prop we're flying today is tiny flight time today is one and a half hours with 450 miles to cover over to chicago midway welcome to chicago guys i was in chicago for a couple of days for work but thankfully got some time to explore highlights including the bean still don't quite know what that is and of course a deep pan pizza which took me about a week to recover from it's time to get back on the move again this time on the iconic 747 little did i realize at the time this would be my last flight on ba's jumbo what made today's trip cool though was we got an upgrade for my buddy p to join me on the upper deck or bubble of the 747 we've got the whole of the upstairs of the 747 it's one of the seats here the best seats actually to go for are the exit row ones here slammer time soon mate [Music] the other thing about this today mate is that we can pop this up and i don't have to see flight time back over to london on this red eye flight will be just under seven hours a fact which always blows my mind distance today comes in at 3 900 miles let's start off today's flight with some champagne or three or four this was just a matter of days before 2020 catering changed completely thankfully i made the most of it with some delicious smoked salmon and the chicken supreme i finished off with a banoffee tart after all that eating and with just a few hours remaining i hit the sack touching down in london i had no idea what was coming up in the next few days [Music] i have arrived now back in london heathrow terminal 5. from this evening i must give the british people a very simple instruction you must stay at home in late march everyday life changed no one commuted to work supermarket shelves were panicked bought empty and people stayed at home a time incomparable to anything we've experienced before [Music] so for the first time in three months let's go catch a flight this was a super surreal experience for me and my first taste of what's to come there was an immense sense of joy getting back on board but sadly matched with uncertainty as someone that flies so much as part of their job and to have gone several months without it this felt super strange to be taking off flying over a lockdown world below felt almost as if i was watching from afar brought back to reality by the fact that the crew are now wearing ppe and there are significant service cuts it is a welcome back to london heathrow a month on from when we were here last i'm already actually heading over to the first wing british airways have a separate channel for their premium customers [Music] so after being an absolute hooligan and slamming a glass of champagne i think i'm going to get another one because you know i've missed travel and now we're going to try this food now i've got to be honest i think that looks fantastic i was super impressed with this new type of food service in the lounges but let's head over to the aircraft i have not flown on a long-haul aircraft for four months look at that a350-900 at this point priority boarding still remained so jumped on board to be greeted by some pretty frosty staff to be honest with you they were not a fan of me filming whatsoever and if you look at the service it's unsurprising [Music] after takeoff my love hate 2020 relationship with iberia began their curry cuts meant service was a glass of water and a tiny packet of nuts it's a shame really because iberia's wide body business class is actually pretty competitive it wasn't long before we descended into madrid this flight was the first real sense that flying was going to totally change under the guise of rona cuts welcome to spain this was also my first time in another country since march and boy what a surreal one plenty of signage up everywhere but still quite busy the strange part was going through the new health screening section though which just felt very bizarre i grabbed an uber over to my airport hotel and i'll see you in the morning an early start today and back over to the airport the departure board seemed busier than london and the airport did to be fair match this with quite a few flights departing i grabbed a copy from a self-serve machine as this was the only thing open and walked over to my gate today's flight was super busy with almost all of economy sold out and around half of business class occupied it wasn't long before boarding was completed and we pushed back bound for belgium [Music] right here we are in brussels some scanners to check out your temperature which is a slightly different one to spain i headed down to the train station because now i have to catch a train over to amsterdam surprisingly the train is actually not that long taking usually around two and a half three hours although of course today it was delayed well welcome to amsterdam we have finally made it made it to the hotel now to chill before i go get something to eat and explore the amazing amsterdam [Music] after a super restful sleep it's time to get back over to the airport because we have yet another flight [Music] this one hour flight is operated by a long-haul aircraft and what i mean by that let's do it let me show you we have got a dreamliner 787-8 which is going to take us back over to london before i take the rest of the seat with me welcome on board ba's club world business class ordinarily you'd never fly this on such a short hop food today was an improvement over last time and i got a coronation chicken sandwich some chocolate mousse a still water and some champagne before i knew it we were on final approach into london heathrow the shortest 787-8 flight i have taken to date i think it was about 45 minutes in total so let's go through into the terminal now [Music] all right guys it is a good morning and a welcome to germany we're currently in ham uh which is relatively close to dusseldorf however not in dusseldorf because i've got to catch a train [Music] well guys here we are this is the turkish airlines a330 that today we are flying over to istanbul let's go on board it seems as you can see pretty quiet and i am for jay i think which is here for europe it's really quite unique to have a wide body operating this route but great for me as it's lay flat flight time today is roughly three and a half hours with a distance of 1250 miles over to istanbul unfortunately it seemed that turkish were taking lessons from iberia and filming and the crew didn't like me filming one bit after inquiring as to why this was i was told it's company policy which is most likely down to their massively adapted service due to covid guys you need to check this out we are in istanbul overnight just checked in to the yotel air now i'm not leaving the airport because it messes up my future travels i can't effectively get into turkey at the minute so i'm in transit i'm able to enter turkey but i've chosen not to just because it could cause problems for my travels next week to the rest of europe now what i was going to show you guys is how cool this hotel room is i mean we're in the airport so literally you can walk out and you're in the terminal but how awesome i mean i've got some kind of little desk and then yeah bathroom what did we get in there do we have a little rainfall shower yeah it's cute the next day the beauty of staying in the airport is that i could wake up literally 45 minutes before my flight departed in reflection this probably pushed it just a little bit right so i've got my face shield ready to go i've got my boarding passes that was not straightforward because they were very confused what i was doing to be fair on the most people are anyway oh by the way welcome on board qatar airways now that took you by surprise didn't it let's settle in to q suites the world's best business class no more turkish airlines in sight so where are we off to well doha of course flight time is roughly four hours over to qatar over a distance of 1 700 miles uniquely i have the whole of the second cabin to myself on this flight so let's take a look at what q suites offers you each suite is privately enclosed with a mid-height door this privacy is more akin to first class than business okay food after experiencing so many cost cutting airlines it's super refreshing to see full service being offered on qatar it's time to see the party piece the double bed yeah nothing quite beats being able to sit in a double bed at forty thousand feet sipping on lp rose especially after the past few months this felt dreamy as we glided into doha i felt content and confident that air travel did indeed still have the excitement and fun of pre-covered we are currently in frankfurt and i'm just about to hop on a train now to take shut up [Applause] we are taking the 801 to milan now to somebody from the uk this is always quite exciting european trains are always more i don't know adventurous so the fact that i can hop on this train now and go as far as milan without changing blows my mind that's through two countries but obviously we're not going to milan we're going to switzerland [Music] you see it's not just plains sometimes like today it's far easier and indeed cheaper to take the train frankfurt to switzerland should take me around four hours this afternoon and cost me 90 euros wow welcome to switzerland well it is a very brief welcome to zurich in switzerland we are actually heading over to zurich airport to catch a pretty special flight a few moments later there's a quick train of course being switzerland it costs like 10 quid but there we go [Music] guys the a340 that we are taking over to london yes i know could you believe that we're taking a plane so big on such a short distance during covid swiss frequently operate this iconic a340 on the london heathrow route for freight reasons it's awesome for me as i'm able to experience swiss long-haul business for well an hour and a half this brings me onto flight distance today which is just 490 miles but here's what really blew my mind swiss offer unchanged business class service on board which is wonderful to see especially when you consider the service cuts we've experienced with both ba and iberia wow that was absolutely amazing just a couple of days later i met up with some of my friends in the ba lounge we were off to amsterdam but not before we made a serious dent into the concord terrace lp i get asked a lot if i enjoy traveling solo and by all means it's fun but you can't beat travelling with your buddies flight time today is a mere 45 minutes but ba are serving champagne on board so i can attest for both myself and lin's we made good work of their supply i love staying in quirky hotels when i'm away and this is no exception as it has a swing on the roof question is would you try it right so it's back on the road for me and a new business class product to try i grabbed the airport train from amsterdam city center and made my way through security well i can't exactly say i was expecting that a little bit lighter than anticipated so turkish apparently have a rule which is interesting because it was different to the flight they took on them last week where they were not that usually overhead bins sometimes i really don't know why i do it to myself back on turkish here we are on board here is my suit 2a now as i said i cannot i cannot put anything in the overhead bins so this this has to go underneath the seat apparently today's dreamliner is the newest version of turkish business class uniquely operated on the amsterdam flight flight time is roughly three and a half hours over a distance of 1400 miles okay here goes refreshments let's start with a pepsi max and um i'd love to give a decent review of the food but it's literally pre-packaged snacks and not even really worth a proper unboxing such a shame to see from an airline that used to be among the very best of in-flight dining right welcome to istanbul i had around 24 hours on the ground in istanbul so what did i see i headed firstly over to the old town exploring the grounds of the blue mosque and then i walked over to the grand bazaar of course after exploring i had to have a lamb kebab and then some turkish delight this is incredible just put it off like a street vendor as well it wasn't like a proper shop or anything but that's always the best way when you're traveling right the street food i really enjoyed exploring istanbul it's somewhere i'd highly recommend so certainly add it to your travel list [Music] you join me at 40 000 feet on route to madrid on board a totally empty ba dreamliner this was surreal as it sounds and did allow me to experience all of the different seats and of course drink all of their champagne [Music] right so welcome to madrid after running through the transit formalities yet you need to complete a medical form just to enter these days i headed over to my next flight we're now at terminal 4 in madrid basically i now need to go and check in for my flight shield on walking down the jet bridge ready to get on the plane yes you've guessed it we're back on one of my favorites qatar airways not their q suites today though our flight is taking us 3 300 miles and eight hours over to doha of course it goes without saying it's time for food i started with the arabic meze which is a personal favorite and then had a main course of ravioli all superb after dinner i went over to one of the other seats and made it up into a bed i actually prefer these older gen seats for sleeping than the q suites controversial i know you'll never guess where we are again welcome back to london heathrow today's a big day as it's my first first class flight since the pandemic hey welcome into terminal 2. today is also the first time i've been required to have a negative covid test in order to travel we go there the triple 7-300 er ek008 from london to dubai on one of emirates's brand new triple sevens in their first class take it out they're ready let's get on board i know it's not my first time in the game changer but my goodness it's a special place to be something you guys should know about today's flight is that it operates some quite different seats to what you might be usual to on a plane so i'm in 1k here now the middle seat is usually somewhere that nobody really wants to sit however this is the middle seat and the unique thing about this these are virtual windows now i'm not sure about you but that's one of the coolest things i've ever experienced on a plane this flight over to dubai will take around seven and a half hours across 3 400 miles and i wish it was longer what's on the menu then well it's a bit depleted since february's trip but still grand let's start with some vintage donpey and crack on with the caviar i really have got into this stuff this year i only ever have it on board for maine i went for the beef tenderloin which i can't say was that great sadly still it is steak on a plane let's go check out the other suites the mood lighting is on and everything is looking stunning don't you think the fas kindly made the central suite into a bed for me as well all this eating is hard work after all i slept like a baby for a good few hours and before i knew it we were on final approach into dubai well guys welcome to dubai that was um a unbelievable flight dubai this time was full of surprises i got collected from my hotel in a 4x4 and taken out to the desert after attempting to feed a camel with some bread a bit more gentle than the other one everyone was a bit aggressive yeah i got my head wrapped with a scarf and headed into the sand but this wasn't the only surprise next up i'm going to fly a plane i can only put this down to my two friends for organizing this one a massive thank you to both bruce and james for making this a reality and also i guess for a rather expensive new hobby what an absolutely unbelievable week but it's time to hit the road again i told you this year is relentless i headed straight for the emirates premium terminal well there's a turnout for the books i didn't expect that i have actually got lounge access um so this is the emirates business class lounge um let's get a quick champagne and get on board shall we this took a bit of organizing but i'll be getting on board the a380 today for the first time since the pandemic it's crazy to think just how few of these are flying at the minute now say what you will but i'm not the biggest fan of emirates business class i think the design is pretty tacky with the faux wood and it's really only competitive on the a380 today's flight as you've probably guessed is back over to london heathrow flight time is around 8 hours with a distance of 3 400 miles as we neared altitude i took a look at the menu card emirates have scaled back their business class offering but it's still substantially better than ba which you'll see in a minute i went for the beef tenderloin which was pretty average and washed down with some verve cleco which was great after lunch i went to check out the bar sadly this was closed due to social distancing regs but was cool to look around and note this is their newest bar variant i headed back to my seat and made this up into a bed i suppose i better snooze off some of that voovoo and catch up on some beauty [Music] sleep [Music] right bag dropped off uh 25kg goodness me i don't have to pack light i don't usually travel with a bag but when i do i don't mess about today i'm departing from seagate which means a train goodness the times i've pushed departures too fine in getting this blasted train let's go get on board also it appears that the plane is miles away dubai let's go so we are in the mini cabin today which i'm hoping will be relatively quiet the main cabin looks busier as you can see through here we've got world traveler plus which is the british airways premium economy but this is my seat today i love the new ba club suites each suite has a direct aisle access and i really like the seat design after a delayed pushback we left stand and headed into the night sky the flight today will take around seven hours over three and a half thousand miles now i did say i'd reference ba's food and yes they do finally offer a hot meal but it's all still very basic and little different to what you'd usually get in economy about an hour into the flight i thought i'd try and get some sleep the seat folds fully flat and comes complete with white company bedding i slept for the vast majority of the flight and awoke not far out from dubai [Music] so welcome that was a pretty good flight i'm quite honest slept vast majority of it helped by the obligatory slammers right so i managed to wing an upgrade here at jumeirah emirates towers um let's just have a look at this presidential suite oh look at that opens out to this degenerate hello he's trying to learn to play piano but when i used to i'm just trying to actually find how to play a song all right i'll leave you to do that once we have a look around and now we have the guest room in this is it honestly this is absolutely ridiculous and then okay you've got a hot tub yeah that's just lovely well i certainly do find myself in some very obscure situations james and i are in the middle of the desert having so much fun but look at this yeah this might be one of the most unique flights of the year on a hot air balloon over the desert genuinely this was one of the most special experiences of my life [Applause] [Music] take your time slow don't jump feel free to slow a arona test now um obviously going over to the us i swear 20 tests in this doesn't get any more comfortable so we've made it over to abu dhabi international airport um let's go through the first class section and go and check in for my flight i got special permission today to film the us pre-clearance facility the whole process was rapid and i'd suggest pushing your plans through here in order to arrive into the us domestically let's go jump on this 15-hour flight over to new york right let's get on board i am i am 1k as before let's get settled in this will do very nicely and surreal to think how long this flight is going to be the last part of my 2020 adventures is coming to the channel in the next few weeks and includes my experience of flying into the us amidst the worst of the pandemic now i guess you probably want to know how much all of this has cost well let's remember i've shown you only a snapshot today of my flights in fact all 60 of them in 2020 came to nearly 120 000 miles how much did this all cost well i booked smartly using points and tricks were feasible the total cost for my 2020 flights came to 10 000 pounds working out an average of 160 pounds of flight not bad eh thanks so much for watching and hope you enjoyed my year in review plenty more content coming up next week
