Fixing REALLY Messy Topology

hello in this video i'll show you how to clean up very messy topology so essentially here for example i've got a scope from zbrush i applied the slice modifier to get rid of the half or the unnecessary parts read topology and then symmetry right here so i think this is a very powerful workflow but we do have some sort of problems right here we do have something really strange happening here so the question is how can we solve this kind of really horrifically bad topology did we just give up on this so i'll show you what you need to do so pretty much i'll select those vertices and i can you know deselect these vertices i can just delete this right here all right now i can go into border and just select this whole thing here and just cap this default hotkey alt p and any expert blender users please let me know blender has a similar function to be able to select any arbitrary hole like this and just to cap this which is going to create of course a really strange result but it's still used for the next step right so if you know how blender can cap these holes please let me know in the comment section thank you all right what i'm going to do here is just apply symmetry on the x just to get this right here all right i'm also going to change the material real quick because this one is way too glossy right here all right there we go this is a nice modding material alright so now that we've got this i also would like to remove this edge here and now we can do is we can simply select two vertices and then use connect and as you can see we now have made order out of the chaos and you know let's do a little bit more let's do this right here all right and as you can see we now have this very clean shape happening here just like that and let's do a before and after so we can actually see what we've done here so if i as you can see it looked like this really strange things happening here really messy topology but now we get this nice simple result here now of course it's not perfect here let me just apply a turbo smoother real quick and now we can do things like cut across here and continue cleaning this up we can also terminate edges as well because this might be too much what i like to do real quick here is just copy this apply add a poly and then paste it the reason for this is because it gives us this nice edge in the center so we can now for example insert a loop here and what we can do is we can maybe insert another loop through here and we can start to terminate understood topology just by using target weld and getting this right here and cleaning things up like so and turning making sure you have quads right here as you can see now so divides nice and clean right here and we can just clean things up like so [Music] so as you can see we've turned a really bad situation into nice and clean results right here all right let's look at another example of bad topology we've got this thing happening right here so how do we fix that well first of all i'm going to remove these extra loops because these are the ones that i created using loops so i'm going to go ahead and just hold ctrl and remove those all right we can reinsert them after we're done here all right how can we fix this right here well what i can do is for example select all of these edges and i can remove that which will give us once again this empty area so in the first example i showed you we deleted then used cap deleted then it went into border check out the border then capped it well we can also just remove the edges and get this right here now we can set up the new links and use shapes we want to be like so for example and there we go we now have this nice clean results and we can just keep doing that all around here remove and then set up the new shapes we want them to be [Music] all right as you can see once again we went from this right here really messy and difficult to fix and now we have this right here much cleaner right here now in this situation i'm not too worried about the inside because it's not going to be visible but of course you can spend more time cleaning this up essentially i can do eventually it's just going to delete the insides and just have the outsiders right here but of course if you are going to have a scene where a character puts it on and you see the inside and you will of course have to take care of that as you model you get this kind of strange shading right here so every once in a while i like to just select all and then clear the smoothing groups now we can individually see every face and it's very easy and comfortable to select it and model it alternatively you can also use the modifier smooth so simply apply smooth and there we go kind of resets everything now we can see every individual face one benefit of using this method cleaning things up is it it's very easy to insert loops here but one problem right here is that there seems to be a loop going all the way around so i'm going to do is just very quickly delete the left half here all right there we go so it seems it's stopping right here because of this so i'm going to just temporarily remove these and now we can insert a loop all the way through here and get these nice details for example a quick inner extrusion sometimes these nice little details just a little bit help to add some nice depth and layers to your modeling so just some pleasing details here all right then we'll have to do is just to select this grow grow detach flip the polygons then what i like to do is just also delete the insides here all right i will select this and then select this bridge loop and then bridge there we go i can now give this for example another material and so now i have this nice little quick detail here [Music] [Music] [Music]
