Fixing Catalunya's stupid chicane

so it's 4am here in new zealand and i have a bone to pick with the circuit barcelona catalonia because i have nothing else better to do like most of you majestically awesome members of the f1 community i look at a design perpetrated by a well-paid well-educated individual with prowess in the field and think i mean hey self-awareness would be a good thing for some of these track designers but without wishing to deviate any further we're in the midst of the spanish grand prix and there is a problem with this venue granted there's quite a lot of problems with it chief among which is this thing this god-awful pathetic pile of goat of a chicane which was added to the track back in 2007. it means no realistic opportunity to pass it kills momentum it's ugly as hell and seems nay is the most pointless piece of racetrack after the whole of the sochi autodrome can you not tell i'm being a slight ted passionate here but while it's all very well and good to go and whinge and moan about the issue i thought how would we fix it now some would immediately say why not just go back to using the fast right hand sweeper that commands the bravery of the pilots that are driving and that's a fair suggestion the only problem is if you break those coming out of any one of these corners you are dead but hey that's a small price to pay if the racing's going to be better right for the greater good huh i am swearing a lot in this one i'm sorry so if more overtaking opportunities are required how do we go about it i decided to give it a try and bearing in mind appendix o to the international sporting code i realized where the parameters were for designing this thing the only rules i set for myself is not to use the sweeper so what i've done is virtually rip off the chicane from the bahrain outer circuit which i did for a couple of reasons firstly as we've seen from the sake grand prix passes through that section are possible you can run side by side through here and that couple with an open up exit heading into the final corner the flow of the racing should be better i've kept tamak run off to a minimum because i mean hey nothing beats a good old sandbox on the side of the road would this make for better racing i mean i don't know i'm not an expert or anything but it is a damn sight better than this piece of garbage not that that was such a hard thing to do so this is what i could produce what about other people could they do something better i asked around to my followers what they could produce and this is what they've come up with so this guy reckons turn 13 should remain the same but after that it's a sweeping left right not a bad one to kick it off russell reckons it should get the sochi treatment and this guy reckons yeah take the long road out and get out of dodge yeah i like that actually i like that we have someone here to find the rules but you've got to admire that a few different suggestions here one going straight into the wall one doing a formula e chicane play the runoff with no track limits just let drivers do whatever they want i kind of like a lot of this mimikin the parabolica and the mls chicane that's on the front straight you know that's not too bad a suggestion boom a replica of turn 8 at istanbul that actually would be spectacular the mario kart approach may help i mean yeah it may result in a lot of death but it would still be entertaining luke reckons a little bit more chicane it's a tight archer cane but may do the job a left right flick this actually looks like something out of harama overtaking may not be that pretty there but again better than this thing leonardo de souza reckons and a roundabout and hey this guy did compete in f3 he knows what he's talking about so i've got to take his word on this oh boy yeah yeah okay oh boy cool here reckons we should tighten up the corner which isn't too bad a suggestion and actually the quality of this one is not too bad just replace it with horiz again not too bad an idea delete old sweeper not allowed how about a re-profile the out of that like you're thinking mate like you're thinking so adding a hairpin with a couple of sweepers leading onto the front straight it's unique not a bad idea definitely better than this thing more nukes make it almost a 90 degree corner with a lot of run-off space similar concept to earlier again not too bad being a comedian south bear i got a feeling that some people don't like this track milky reckons we should formula e this thing karen here reckons take inspiration from portugal or it kind of looks more like shanghai but still skip the entire section which okay we now got a new trend here smoothing up the entry onto the final corner i like where you're coming from here matt but maybe in a couple of years turning up the sweeper again and not bad editing i must say yeah there may be a problem with that run-off doing a bit of zigzagging there taking inspiration from bahrain more nukes adrian here using the old sweeper but adjusting it just a little cheeky every circuit needs some messes right yeah no you really went oprah winfrey on this thing i like what this guy's done here he's replaced the chicane with a cave painting excuse the crudeness i will i may not excuse your lack of runoff similar concept to earlier tighten up the corner skip the chicane not too bad oh this is familiar extending the runoff to make this happen i don't know if they could do that but you're literally thinking outside the box here and i like that one it fits okay where is this going 2 it makes exit speed from the previous corner extra useful and three i like the way the painted circuit map painted on the actual chicane doesn't actually include the chicane and you know what if this thing ever got done it better be on that damn map so a few decent designs there some others need some work but still this kind of response really does send a message to the folks at the catalonia circuit ladies sort
