Fishing for Catfish When No One Will Go

hey guys i'm deeper melhorn today i'm going fishing but i can't get anybody to go all right guys so here's the deal it's raining today there's a chance of thunderstorms today there's a front moving through dumping a lot of rain we've got a flash flood warning uh here's what happened i can't get nobody to go the truth is i had a guy trip scheduled and when i get these conditions i give the people the option of going or not going uh not everybody's equipped to fish in the ring like i am so i gave them the option and they said they would rather reschedule and do their guide trip another time no problem with that i have two sports writers that write for magazines and websites that have been wanting to go fishing uh to do some articles uh i hit them up not even those guys want to go fishing the weather is not looking good as the bottom line uh but i looked at the radar got up this morning we had some rain there's a pocket where it looks like there's gonna be a gap and i'm gonna go out and see if i can put a big fish in the boat we're going for one fish today guys it's not a lot of covering water i'm probably gonna anchor in one or two spots put out some baits and try to catch a big fish they're releasing water out of uh this system to accommodate some of this flood water that's coming in it's not gonna be a big flood but it's enough that there's gonna be a spike in the water level and uh so there should be some pretty good current should be some water moving and i'm taking a gamble going to the upper reaches of this reservoir uh and gonna try to catch uh some current uh some moving water uh hopefully it hadn't been pulling it for too many days but i got some places where i think fish can duck out of it maybe and uh let's see what we put in the boat all right folks i want you to look around the boat round ain't nobody fishing today this may be a bad sign i don't know but i'm going uh right now it's not raining it's going to them a little bit though uh it's going to happen it's going to rain no two ways about that but i got my rain suit got me some rubber boots i think i won't be okay well we got a shower coming through um it's gonna four for a little bit and then be out of here so uh probably gonna anchor up here give this one place a shot and see what happens i'm marking a few fish it's not on fire with the number of fish in here but it's kind of good some of the places on the lower lake were loaded with bait loaded with a lot of stuff and the bite was kind of slow so maybe we can give them something to eat here where there's not a ton to eat they'll eat i think that makes sense all right guys let's see what we got for bait here i got some gizzard shad leftover not exactly big ones but we will take them what i'm gonna do is cut these suckers i'm gonna make them big i'll do my little polish fillet thing where i cut them up from the back pop the tails off so they don't flutter cut that back up like that poof like that and in fact what this does is it makes a little bait big you got that piece you got that flap like that cut open i'll hook it through here roll it back up through there and bang you got a pretty decent sized bait there it's not as big as like a great old big 12-inch gizzard shad but it'll work and it'll catch some fish hopefully we got some feeding we got a little bit of current not much so i'm just going to fan cast these out around the boat here marked a few fish let's see what's happening guys i think we got one going right here a slime cat rod like that fish is on there yep we all hooked up it's kind of uh promising only been here about five minutes just got the baits out was checking cameras had this one go not a monster but we're happy to catch fish especially considering the crazy warm conditions that we've got right now people take what the lake gives us today it's a good eater size blue oh okay simmer some of some of some summer nice fish one tucked a bigger bait it's got a little mud on it might have been one of the ones we marked rolling in here i don't really know get them back alive like i said there's a little bit of current moving there's not a lot i think they still probably got maybe one turbine going just waiting to see what's going to happen with the water but anchored up here uh got them deep got them shallow i'm only sitting in seven feet of water so we'll see where the fish are this one came off the deeper side so let's see if we get another one see if we can get a pattern going [Music] we as a lot of y'all know uh i spend a lot of my october and middle part of november about six weeks deer hunting i love the deer hunt i've done it since i was a child and my son who's 13 speaking of honey now so we spent a lot of time hunting uh but this year is a little different because of the coronavirus i spent a lot more time guiding during this time period i've had a lot of guy trips uh put a lot of fish in the boat so it's kind of uh taking away from my actual time on the water fishing between trying to keep my son in the woods who's 13 and loves chasing deer uh and me in the woods who love chasing deer in the fall trying to fish trying to work uh trying to juggle everything we got going on in this crazy world it's been kind of uh nuts and busy so i haven't got out to fish as much but i got this one day uh guide trips the past two days like i said had one that wanted to reschedule for the day i understand that so i'm gonna get a day on the water uh just because looking at the forecast uh there's some pockets and some windows where i think we can get here and catch some fish so hopefully we can put a couple more in the boat all right guys got one going here on this other slime cat rod that was up in some shallow water he has gone all the way to the other side of the boat out toward the river channel i'm gonna see if i can play him back into the game here to this side i may still have to land him on that side of the boat we'll say small fish so i think he'll be a little more manageable see what we got here boom oh we can get him in there with that hook pow got him in the boat regardless take a little wrangling good eater size fish they're taking a shad it's not stopping them that one like i said came off the shallow side i've got stuff from five or six feet of water all the way around to about 20 feet of water and uh that's two fish with uh within a fairly short period here we've probably been here i don't know 45 minutes so uh get some more baits in the water see if we get another one all right folks made a little run down the river uh gonna anchor up in a different spot winds picking up some out here rain looks good on the radar for right now but uh starting to get some wind uh i don't think that's really gonna be here nor there on what's happening with the bite i got six baits back in the water got a little deeper river cut through here uh still got a little water moving so we're gonna see what happens uh freshen up the bait still fishing all guns are chad not doing any chicken right now i'll explain that in a little bit but uh to you i just got them covered here from about two feet of water all the way down to about 26 feet of water so we'll see if there's any hungry fish in here i think we got one trying to get a bite of lunch that rod sneak up on it and reel down yes he is there he's trying to get him a bite of lunch he's getting up toward lunch time there he goes going back over that way oh god popped him off yeah damn it i think he got into another line yep he tried to eat the big old bait i hate that that was a big old chunk of bait i think or was he a small bait i can't tell i got another line that's one of the dangers guys when you get around another line it is amazing what that resistance from another fishing line we'll do i was actually one of the smaller baits uh to pop and hook loose any of y'all that fish long enough will know that uh see the slime on it he was there but uh yeah you get around another line best thing you can do if you getting a fish close to the boat give it as much slack as you can on that other line and sometimes that'll help you keep that fish on the hook dang got another little one going i think ah yep man it is not a crazy bite but we're getting bit by a few of them amazing how warm it is today absolutely amazing the temperatures for the second week of november unbelievable another small channel cat may be the same channel cat see if he's got a hole in his mouth maybe the one that popped off of here earlier there we go get him back get him back get him back there he is one sec we can't get the big ones guys i'm chunking the baits putting the big baits this just ain't working i don't know what's up well folks if you made it
