[Music] and we are going to be talking about surf fishing 101 today [Music] [Music] hi I'm Andy block a fellow member of the Flagler sportfishing Club and I'm here today to talk to you about beginners surf fishing I'm going to go over some tips for you that are particularly good for a beginner but I'm going to start with the gear this is an 11 foot rod and I would recommend getting an 11 foot as a minimum for your rod and I'm going to go over these things quickly you can always call one of our sponsors go on the club web page call one of our sponsors to find out what kind of surfacing gear that they're selling and try to support the sponsors they have great stuff so this is a spinning reel it's a pen 6500 and you don't have to go with a pen I just happen to like this it's about 25 years old they're bulletproof I like the spinning reels over the conventional reels this is a conventional reel it is much more difficult to master and when you're just starting out you don't need the extra hassle of dealing with this if you want to know some of the bad stuff I mean they're great reels but for a beginner go on Google and say conventional reel birdsnest and look at the images the line gets all whacked out so I like to keep it simple and straight with one of these so I've got the pen reel and it's loaded with this is a high-visibility 30 pound braid and it's yellow line and the reason I went to this about ten years ago because I I heard about it reducing the number of Pelican tangles that you get this pelicans are going to be cruising in a squadron down the beach and when they don't see your line they fly into it and then you have to deal with untangling them I've reduced that amazingly with this yellow line so I'd recommend that a thirty pound braid I prefer braid because it casts farther it's more sensitive you can feel it it doesn't stretch and it's also much thinner for the same pound test so if you have a bunch of wind it's not going to pick up your line the way it will monofilament so I would stick with braid this is a shock leader 65 pounds leader you need to do a knot not a swivel between the two and Captain Britain did a great short video on doing a uni to uni knot and I would go on and look at that this is an Albright knot but any good knot that connects the two and is small for passing through the guides is great you then come down here to a snap swivel and I put a snap swivel on here so that I can then attach my rigs to that and I can change them out what this is is a double dropper rig these are called the droppers here and I've got it strung this is also known as a pompano rig and I've got this made with 40 pound fluorocarbon I prefer fluorocarbon because it's a little bit more abrasion resistant so when you're out there a lot of times you're going to be getting rub back and forth on the sand there might be some rock out there you're going to get a little bit more life out of fluorocarbon it's also supposedly something that the fish can't see I've got a one-off hooki on it and right above the one on hook you'll see I've got a yellow rather an orange bead and this is to mimic the eggs in a sand flea and this is a one odd it's a small hook but that's all you need I'm really focusing on pompano and whiting but you can also catch reds on these no problem black drum no problem and this is what I would use a one out and some sort of a attractor orange is always good down here we have a another snap swivel that's to change the weights so the weight I'm using here is called a Sputnik because it has these arms so it looks like the Russian Sputnik and these act as anchors so once you cast it out there this sort of buries in the sand and it will stop the line for me to drift into the North or drifting to the south if there's a heavy drift out there here's a bigger look at the circle hook and what you're going to notice is it bends back in so you would think that you couldn't catch a fish with this but what happens is fish grabs the bait and as it's running it gets caught in the corner of its mouth it just keeps going the sands flight is going to hold it the Sputnik is going to hold it it's going to run going to go pull up and go right into the corner so you don't get the gut hooks that you get with a j-hook so there's just a good example of a circle hook without straining your eyes but we're going to put some sand fleas on the beautiful thing about the circle hooks and I want to go back to that for a second circle hooks will they'll hook the fish for you it's you don't have to set the hook if you go to set the hook you often will pull the hook out of the fish's mouth avoid that at all costs to just back up pick it up back up and reel you don't need to set the hook you'll lose it if you do don't jerk it all be smooth be smooth also try to keep your rod tip down when you're reeling you're going to notice how long this handle is well I'm only putting it down about six to eight inches so it's way up here I've got extra height for the reasons I talked about but also this is going to tell me if I'm working and say I'm getting some bait somewhere I'm talking to somebody I'm baiting up on another rod if I get a big fish hits this what's going to happen is he's going to pull forward it's going to spring back usually and drop down so when that happens I may hear it hitting the top of the sand spike if I don't hear it I'm gonna look over I'm going to look at my rods and say why is this rod down to the reel it should be up here I better check it out the higher it is the better for one thing you'll avoid those waves another thing you'll avoid if if it's a rough day the water is going to come in it's going to splash it's going to come up and spend of getting your reel now none of the reels unless you start going into the big bucks you know eight nine hundred thousand dollars are going to be waterproof so you're going to be getting saltwater which is you want to keep your reel away from saltwater it all caught all costs but worse than saltwater is the very finely ground sand that's in that water so it's going to get up in there and it's going to get into your bearings you'll start hearing a rubbing sound a scraping sound and you'll wear your bearings out that way plus the other so you want to keep your real out of the water at all costs you want to keep it off the sand don't ever lay your real down your run real down on the beach put it in the sand spike or put it on a towel okay so I'm going to cast this out this will be good for Pompano whiting redfish black drum and what you want to do is you want to tighten down your drag because this braid can cut your finger if you don't if it slips when you go to cast and you want to flip your bail holding this down I like to do this pull a couple of seconds to make sure I can see that we're going up and down if it's going up and down I know it's not tangled around the tip if it's tangled around the tip and you go to cast it you can break your rod you can break your tip off okay so we're out there I'm going to close the bell with my hand so I'm going to continue the reel to take up the slack and I'm going to put this in about six inches and look at the tip I see how it's bent it's also the rod holder the spike is facing the ocean just a little bit and that's because when I reel it in if it's straight up and down what's going to happen is if there's any wind my rig is going to start to spin around my rod and when it spins around my rod I have one more thing I have to untangle unnecessary if you tip it a little bit that won't happen so we're all set this is set for a catching fish I hope that this has helped you there's a couple of things I can tell you one is that if you get to the beach and the waters beautiful like this expect to have a decent day look for run-outs and that's going to be where the water is running out on the out going through a break in the sandbar out there if you see the waters all brown and dirty you can expect to catch catfish stingrays and sharks you might catch some blues and whiting but you're gonna catch a lot more undesirable fish if the if it's very weedy out there you're gonna have a real difficult time with the weeds getting on your rigs so very often you only can fish one rod if it sweetie and if it's super weedy it's more fun just not to fish that day so the tides I'd love to be able to tell you that the incoming is always the best for the outgoing is always the best but there is no always the best it changes all the time you have to be out there but that's the beauty it's great being out here this is my favorite kind of fishing so hopefully this has helped you hopefully you can click you like it on YouTube and if you hit the bell of our clubs the quick tips videos will come into you when they're public thanks for watching [Music] you
