so here begins my three days of detailing starting with the baked on brake dust rims and calipers i finally found my wheel holder after unpacking a few more boxes during the move next my buddy roger garbo picked up the old rubber and replaced them with the reddish line ultra vorti ultra high performance summer tires rated up to 186 miles an hour redistend is the best tire brand you've never heard of despite being a hundred and eleven years old and actually styled by the legendary gejaro ital design gejaro is responsible for designing some of the most iconic cars in the world the bmw m1 the lotus esprit delorean and of course the maserati mc12 which i recently detailed at sst last year with the new and old tires in the subie and on the roof he headed off to the shop to get them mounted and balanced while i cleaned the super black calipers [Music] okay [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] just about then my new 295 35 zr21 vredsteins arrived and they look super nice and really sticky so i was pumped okay next i focused on the exterior now this ad clearly hasn't been washed in a very long time by the previous owner and it looks like it sat outside for most of its life so at this point it was just about soaking the dried on dirt and the engine grime and what looks like bits of mold on the inside of the gas [Music] door [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so the gas fill area was so dirty that the drainage hole was clogged until i cleared the opening with my finger [Music] after thoroughly cleaning the exhaust i ended up finding a piece of plastic that was stuck in the under tray so now my brain went nuts and i said okay we have to clean the entire undercarriage first all the trays needed to be removed to take a closer look for any possible leaks grime buildup and to start fresh with clean parts to make spotting future leaks really obvious to do this of course i'm using the new pivot bottle that can spray up and down without the straw ever running dry or sucking up air i'm super excited to be part of the development team for this new bottle click the link in the description to be the first to try out the newest invention [Music] afterwards i followed up with brute in a phone gun for all the tight spots now if you find cleaning calipers therapeutic scrubbing the undercarriage of your car is next level so you gotta try it with the car back down i reformed the paint and used soap as a lubricant for the claying process which it desperately needed because it was parked outside after the rinse i opened up all the doors including the sunroof wind guard which you can see is quite dirty [Music] when you're investigating a used car or any car for that matter always inspect the jams as they'll tell you two things one if the car lives indoors or outside and two if the owner keeps a regular cleaning schedule clearly this is a loose rule of thumb but in this case it's clearly parked outside and it definitely wasn't regularly washed which would prevent much of the accumulated dirt in these particular areas but it's also what got me a below market valuation so you can use this as your negotiation tool if possible obviously on the flip side if you're selling a car make sure to not overlook these hot spots when you're cleaning okay now with the exterior somewhat clean i focused on the interior which had mold in the trunk spider webs and white stuff on the rear seats and of course a thick layer of dust and dirt on pretty much everything as the previous owner worked in the landscaping business to start i removed the gross floor mats and used compressed air to blow out the heavy dirt from in the seams and underneath the seats etc before scrubbing the plastic and leather with ammo lather and an interior brush [Music] [Music] notice how shiny the driver's seat bolster is compared to the passenger side on heavily greased areas like this you can use an interior scrub pad to help lift the body oils from the surface before scooping them up quickly with a microfiber towel same technique was used for the steering wheel which is very common [Music] ah [Music] next i vacuumed everything including the obligatory french fry underneath the seat in the trunk the material is nappy and a bit stronger which holds the dirt in more than let's say the interior carpet so you can use compressed air or use a brush to loosen the dirt and suck it up immediately with the vacuum or just simply use the compressed air and blow it out of the car if that's possible part of the mold i showed you before in the trunk was on the removable lid so i removed that lid and i sprayed ammo shag carpet cleaner and used the short hair interior brush to pull whatever that was off the fibers i did the same thing on the interior piece that i couldn't remove in anticipation of quickly shampooing later on with the interior drying the paint although clean was severely neglected but i did have a leg up because it's silver now if this was a black car the whitish swirls would have been painfully obvious [Music] as night falls or you just simply shut off all your lights inside that building it actually becomes easier to identify issues within the paint as you're polishing it because your eye is not competing with all the ambient light around the room here's how it works with respect to polishing via a light there's a little bit of a nuance here that i think we haven't really spoken about at length and that is when you're polishing by light you're allowing the light to shine in and you have your polish and the polisher going you can still see the scratches so let's back up a second when you're polishing normally let's say you're doing the hood or whatever and you're standing up on your feet and you're looking down at the hood as you're polishing you're kind of going in your head i would imagine most people are going uh 20 seconds and then i want to stop or i'm doing six passes up and down cross hatch whatever it is that your pattern is that's fantastic my point that i'm trying to make is when i'm polishing via a light like this i'm polishing until either two things one the polish runs out and you can kind of see that in in the light itself and two as i'm polishing i'm just looking for the scratch or the squirrel to be removed it's a way more effective technique in which to do it why because instead of doing like this and another 20 seconds or six pass whatever it is right and then you take your towel and you wipe it off you look at it and go oh man i got to do a little bit more you don't have to necessarily do that or you do that a little bit less meaning you can move faster because there's no guessing you're holding the the polisher like this and you're looking into the light and as you're the polisher as you're doing it let's say this spot right here i'll put my fist here like this you just pull it down a little bit and see if you got it and you go back and you pull it down i get it no okay that's good that spot's good so when you do your little area you wipe it off and you move on to the next spot you don't need to look and go oh okay so play with that a little bit darken out the room it's nice if night time out time at night time outside i don't have a whole ton of lights on right here i just have the one that is a much more effective way i believe of polishing without having to go back 50 times i'm going to try to pull the camera in and see and have you see what i see again it's challenging to do that with the camera but it's just it's kind of a something i've been doing for years and i just never was able to verbalize it but hopefully you guys get uh understand where i'm going with it with that concept in mind i continued the paint restoration it desperately needed with my angled light so here's a little interesting thing that happened in between takes here on the black trim i accidentally picked up some junk or debris or something it got stuck in my microfiber towel i wiped that area clean and sure enough it scratched the area i had just polished now ultimately i recompounded it quickly and it came right out and it wasn't a big deal but this is a great example of working clean and making sure you're checking your towels frequently before you wipe any cars next i quickly touched up a few rock chips with a needle and touch-up paint technique first remove any remaining oils with an isopropyl alcohol wipe then shake both the paint and clear coat tubes and then pick out the correct size needle based on the size and depth of the damage in this case i went with the green tip and screwed it onto the syringe next unscrew the paint brush and put it to the side then angle the tube a little bit so that the needle can actually reach the paint without going all the way in sometimes it just doesn't fit like this one here and when you suck out the paint make sure to minimize the amount of air that gets into the syringe and then clean off the tip to avoid it dripping on the paint later as you can see the chip is through the paint and into the metal which will oxidize if left unprotected now let me be clear touch-up is to protect the paint first a very distant second is the cosmetic improvement you might see think of it sort of like a band-aid if it looks better then that's great but the ultimate goal is protection also keep in mind you may need to do this a few times because paint shrinks as it dries likewise metallic paint touch-ups tend to not look as good as let's say single stage paint or non-metallic paint so keep that in mind and don't drive yourself crazy now on the rear of the car there is a life-altering deep long scratch that keeps me up at night now this needs to be repainted but in the meantime i filled the grand canyon-like scratch with many layers of touch-up to discourage the rust because the scratch was so deep and i wanted to add a lot of touch up it would have a tendency to run or drip down if it was vertical so in this case i opened up the trunk to make it horizontal so it could just sit there but that meant i had to hop up on a ladder which wasn't a big deal it made my life a whole lot easier so if you have the opportunity to do that in this situation it's probably a good idea while the touch-up was drying i polished the door jambs with a three-inch machine some of the super low parts of the car that i couldn't reach before with a six-inch pad and then of course the calipers with a one-inch pneumatic then i went down the rabbit hole of polishing one's wheels these were pretty scuffed up so i used a three-inch microfiber pad to get into the tight spots without completely losing my mind by going to a one-inch machine i did the same steps on the inner barrels as well with a three-inch pad once the touch-up was dried i added ammo reflex pro coating to protect my work for the long run this application included the paint obviously but also the plastic trim emblems headlights and especially the calipers and because this is a new slash used car the door jams as well again door jambs tend to be forgotten but they actually need plenty of protection not just on the car frame itself but underneath the door including the lower part on the bottom where the door closes as it gets caked up with salt and dirt regularly then of course the rims with two coats on the face and two coats on the barrel before protecting and moisturizing the freshly scrubbed leather with ammo mousse to keep it soft and supple while adding uv protection then i reinstalled the rims and cleaned the glass now look at the ride height of the macan granted it just came off the lift so it needs a little time to settle down a bit but it's still just way too high so after pulling the car outside and seeing how insane the depth and shine of the paint was certainly compared to just a few days earlier i really wanted to reduce the space between the top of the tire and the bottom of the fender giving it a sportier look and feel so i searched around online and found an air suspension lowering module that will reduce the center of gravity for improved handling and improved appearance without removing the existing suspension so a few weeks later i received my box from flat6motorsports.com with my car graphic active suspension control unit as well as 10 and 15 millimeter spacers with new bolts for the front and rear wheels to install this unit i removed a few rear plastic pieces exposing the factory suspension module where i literally just plugged in the new wiring harness to the existing module as simple as that then i started the car and opened up the app on my phone which allows you to raise and lower the front and rear suspension independently now by the time the package actually arrived winter started to set in so i had to change my tires once again to the fretstein windtrack pro at speedsport tuning like the ultrak vorte the ones for the summer the wind track pro for winter are also rated at 186 miles an hour which is completely insane but also awesome at the same time once those were installed by sst i then added the spacers to give the macan a beefier stance where it's got those big shoulders it looks amazing so the space between the tire and the fender sometimes referred to as the dead cat space are approximately about five inches at the high and after engaging the application as low as an inch and three quarters when in show mode and of course any height you desire in between the high and the low which makes this a pretty handy device for 10 minutes of installation time and after a few days of detailing the macan was brought back to nearly perfect condition saving me thousands of dollars and helping me offset new tires spacers and a sporty suspension application all for a few fun days of detailing so don't be intimidated to buy a used car that of course runs well but needs a little detailing love [Music] [Music] [Music] you
