hey what's up guys i know how you love disaster episodes and how you love exotics today we're gonna do a little bit of both i'm gonna turn the camera around check this thing out this is a 2014 ferrari 458 spider meaning the top comes off of course goes back into the trunk area this is daily driven in manhattan and it is absolutely filthy look at the water spots there are stains everywhere the interior's got some junk going on there and then of course the bra this is going to get removed but look at the squirrels even on the bra and off the rod just in my mind what i would call a disaster for a ferrari we're going to restore this get it nice and shiny and back on the road today on this episode of drive and protect [Music] [Music] step one is to remove the old swirled out bra notice the space between the edge of the panel in this case the hood and the edge of the bra so this is about an eighth of an inch of space or so now this is commonly found in pre-cut quick kits to avoid having to do some extra work of heating or what we call training the bra to go around the edge of the panel so that it goes all the way underneath it's much more work but you can't see the edge of the bra like you can see on this original one not to mention there's no protection around your edges so be sure to ask about this nuance should you be getting a clear bra on your car in the future anyhow to remove the bra i usually use a heat gun but it can be tricky by the way look at the fresh paint underneath the bra versus the exposed paint it's a night and day difference now with older bras and the heat gun technique you can leave behind a bit of glue residue which requires glue remover or a solvent sometimes glue is easier to remove than others but this one turned into a massive time-consuming mess and that's because my technique wasn't exactly perfect on the side panels i wasn't going to let that happen again so i adjusted my approach with the hot water technique instead of the heat gun technique okay so we removed the bra from the front and you probably noticed it which is kind of a complete nightmare we used a heat gun we used steam then we had to use rapid remover to remove the glue that was left behind so we sort of came up with a different process here i made a couple of phone calls and called some friends that have run into this issue so i'm gonna do something that you're not supposed to i want you to hear how it sounds you hear that that's not a good thing that means the glue is sticking to the paint as you're removing it now the idea is to heat it up a little bit but it doesn't necessarily work all that great so what i found out is we're going to be boiling water is a really good technique i put it in this plastic container because you don't want to have the the kettle kind of go in here pour the boiling water you see the steam there and look how this comes off now when you get to the area that isn't warm anymore see how it's not coming off so if i were to force this the glue from the back of the bra would stick to the paint again like i did here we'll zoom in in a second but there's glue left over now i have to spend the extra time to remove the glue again time is money sort of thing so heat it up and this is really really hot almost to the point i can't hold it just don't get it on your hand because it's hot next i removed the wheels inspected the calipers and suspension and then lifted the ferrari up just a little bit so i'd have some more access to the wheel wheels [Music] once done with the calipers and suspension i inspected the undercarriage and found a leaf you guys know what that means up the lift goes after the first coat of brute was on the under tray you can see it's starting to loosen the oil and the grime before i came in with a brush to agitate the tight spots and then eventually just power wash the dirt and grime away [Music] on the rear diffuser however i used titan 12 degreaser in a pivot bottle because the majority of the grime was actually attached to the fins around the exhaust tip so i needed a little bit more cleaning power here once cleaned and then dried the under tray looked way better next i focused on the wheels which for a ferrari were abnormally dirty with ammo plum wheel brush wash mitt and clay lots of the embedded brake dust was removed you of course can use clay on your wheels but that clay patty can never be used again on the paint so keep that in mind you may also need some titan degreaser as well to cut through any oily or grimy build up on the wheel itself but again that clay patty has to be thrown away afterwards to remove the old wheel weight sticker residue use a plastic razor blade with a bit of rapid remover solvent to loosen the glue [Music] guys real quick i'm excited to introduce you to a detailing video game and simulator based on my barn find episodes in this simulator you'll walk a barn full of lost cars and discover some of the rarest pieces of automotive history then you can pick your favorite car just like the mercedes 280sl episode once you find that dream car then you can buy it and bring it back to your detailing studio where you'll find lost treasures shampoo disgusting mats steam clean the interior power wash and foam the paint and then clean the wheels all while using your favorite ammo products and tools afterwards pick your pad and polisher to restore the faded and oxidized paint before checking over your work with a paint light then clean up the chrome and any last touch-ups before the auction at carsonbids.com when it sells use the profits to upgrade your detail studio then head back to the barn and negotiate for your next dream card click the link in the description to add it to your wish list on steam next i power wash the paint but notice leftover dots of glue from the clear bra removal all of this glue residue chaos could have been avoided if i just used the hot water technique instead of the heat gun but i removed them with the power of the warm water and the pressure and everything was fine it was just kind of a waste of time once every last bit of glue was removed i foamed everything and worked the tight spots first on the emblems the grilles the engine gas door and trunk jams [Music] once the tight spots are done then i work the larger areas with a microfiber towel method and eventually rinsed with warm water now some of you may have noticed over all my videos sometimes i clay before i polish and sometimes i don't so here's the thought process right around here not the top but right around here needs to be clayed listen can i hear that and put my microphone sometimes i do sometimes i don't in this particular case i'm doing it now why because the paint is black because it tends to be a little bit softer ferrari based on my experience let's just say when you pick up a lot of that junk in the microfiber cutting pad what's going to happen is it's going to get stuck in the pad and then scour the paint and i'm going to have a lot of trouble on the back end when i'm polishing maybe in a couple of hours that i can't make it perfect and a lot of times that has to do with the fact that there's contaminants so let's say on a white car on a not a ferrari an audi or something or a porsche i might go you know what i'm going to skip this step save some time and i'll take it out with a microfiber cutting pad but in this case because it's black because it's a ferrari because they tend to be soft i'm going to clay it now hopefully that makes sense okay that's how quick it is now listen listen again you hear anything maybe a little spot right there actually but that's how you go back over you can feel it you can hear it it took i don't know seven seconds and now i've sort of minimized that chance of causing squirrels or having issues with the polish in about two or three hours so think about that after the clang and re-rinsing i used compressed air in a microfiber towel to dry the paint and the tight spots i'm also wearing ear protection because the sound for whatever reason bounces off the floor and the walls and it's really ear piercing with the outside clean and decontaminated i decided to switch gears and work on the interior as it wasn't filthy compared to let's say a barn finder whatever but definitely on the dirtier side for a modern ferrari on the dead pedal notice the leftover glue residue from the original factory plastic rapid remover and a bit of agitation took it right off [Music] on my carpets i'm using my brand new machine which i'm really excited about this is an edic galaxy auto 3000 carpet extractor which comes with a 1000 watt external water heater what that means is in the past i've had these machines and let's say something goes wrong it blows up it fails whatever super common if it's inside the machine it's a huge pain in the butt to take it out this one is external so if anything goes wrong i can just replace it and you're good to go has single cord operation 12 gallon solution tank 11 gallon recovery tank again massive which comes in crazy handy because last week i vacuumed 26 pounds of mud off the floor from power washing a really disgusting dirty car and it has an awesome clear vacuum head this thing is amazing i'll put a link in the description below little things like this make me super happy then i finished up with lathering the interior doors the emblems steering wheel and so on to remove the dust and grime [Music] with the interior drying a bit i focused on polishing the lug boats with flitz metal polish [Music] okay guys we're finished with cleaning the outside and a little bit on the inside we still have a few things to do but clearly this is a daily driven car uh the paint itself is swirled and scratched there's no doubt about that i think it's taking you know drives through a tunnel wash i'm not exactly sure but regardless we need to polish the paint so what i've done is three separate panels here the first one i did yellow uh this one right here the yellow liquid from rupes with a yellow foam pad it looks great meaning it finished out well but if you look very close a lot of the deeper scratches didn't come out okay so what i did was bumped up to the next level we have a blue liquid instead of the yellow blue and then the blue foam pad took out everything no problem but it left behind a ton of swirls that we'd have to come back on a stronger polish meaning step two so i said okay let's try to negotiate here so we went down to a yellow pad yellow wool pad and the yellow liquid again that combination worked out great now when you're done with this you do a couple of different passes i'll show you in a little bit and then when you're done you blow it out and do one other pass without really adding too much more liquid and it comes out pretty good and i think for that last like five or maybe six percent uh to be perfect we're going to go back in and then use some probably a white pad and a white polish but i still gotta play with that but overall this looks really good now we need to put our headphones on turn some music on and just kind of hammer away at this [Music] when i was done the next day i focused on one inch polishing the calipers before coating with my new wheel coating called gillette pro now i'll have a link to a how-to video coming soon but for now know that it has way more solids designed for metals in high heat areas like calipers and wheels and exhaust tips again i'll have more info coming [Music] soon also noticed the hub was corroded a bit so i used scotch brite stainless steel to clean up the heavy stuff before hitting it with 3m's 800 grit by hand to knock down the scotch brite marks i just put in then i followed up with polishing ruse and a felt pad on a power tool before using flits by hand to add a little bit more shine which was totally unnecessary but it took two seconds so whatever why not afterwards the barrels and the fronts were polished with a three inch and one inch pad respectively before adding gillette pro metal coating to the surface for those of you who already have reflex pro you can use it on your wheels now the difference between reflex and july pro is delay is much thicker it has a higher heat resistance and little to no flexibility because it's designed for calipers wheels finished and unfinished metal which flexes less than paint so you can use reflex on metals no problem but it's not really recommended to use july pro on the paint again i'll have more info on the website coming soon once done i replaced the clear bra on the full hood again never do half hoods as it costs basically the same amount as doing a full hood but the full hood is virtually invisible while the half hood is very visible with that line going [Music] across [Music] my very last step was to add a bit of mud dressing to the wheels and the wheel wells and then i applied reflex pro to the paint and the next day it looked absolutely amazing [Music] well guys we're all done and you can see the car looks absolutely insane now clearly from a disaster perspective there weren't any dead animals and things like that but from a ferrari daily driven sort of detailing nerdy perspective yeah this thing was pretty bad definitely taken through some car washes but now it looks amazing when you have a black car and you put reflex pro on it looks nuts now one of the things i'm doing we did that last night by the way so this morning it's early by like nine o'clock i am putting a little bit of reboot on why because we're figuring out we have a fan up top there and sometimes we leave that fan on to keep the heat down here because it's three levels and so there's a little light layer of dust on it and it's being picked up in a little bit by a trailer now the interesting thing that we were gonna shoot today but we're not and why we're doing this the way that we're doing it is i was gonna say hey guys at the end now we need to take it for a drive or something like that and then go out and take it for a drive this is a buddy's car a good customer and he's like yeah go ahead go you know go have fun you know end your video that sort of thing but come out here i'll show you exactly why we can't do that it is eight degrees outside your aperture is going to go nuts oh my gosh and it's flurrying out it's sunny frozen eight degrees i don't know if you can see against my shirt it's flurrying so that has summer tires on it not a great idea so we're going to end we're going to end the video with hope you enjoyed the car looks absolutely amazing it's being picked up a little bit so we'll show you getting picked up and stay warm talk to you guys soon [Music] [Applause] you
