know the weaknesses of each of us let each one find you mighty to save through jesus christ your son our lord who lives and reigns with you and the holy spirit one god now and forever finally sit for the ministry of the world a reading from the word of god written in the book of deuteronomy the 26th chapter beginning at the first verse deuteronomy 26 1-11 moses said when you have come into the land that the lord your god is giving you as an inheritance to possess and you possess it and settle in it you shall take some of the first of all the fruit of the ground which you have is from the land that the lord your god is giving you and you shall put it in a basket and go to the place that the lord your god will choose as a dwelling for his name you shall go to the priest who is in office at that time and say to him today i declare to the lord your god that i have come into the land that the lord swore to our ancestors to give us when the priest takes the basket from your hand and sets it down before the altar of the lord your god you shall make this response before the lord your god a wandering aramian was my ancestor he went down into egypt and lived there as an alien few in number and there he became a nation mighty and populous when the egyptians treated us harshly and afflicted us by imposing hard labor on us we pray to the lord the god of our ancestors the lord heard our voice and saw our affliction our time and our oppression the lord brought us out of egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm with a terrifying display of power and with signs and wonders and he brought us into this place and gave us this land a land flowing with milk and honey so now i bring the first of the fruit of the ground that you o lord has have given me you shall set it down before the lord your god and bow down before the lord your god then you together with the levites and the aliens who reside among you shall celebrate with all the bounty that the lord your god has given to you and to your house this is the word of the lord the appointed psalm 91 verses 1 to 2 and 9 to 16. [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] [Music] me [Music] is [Music] [Music] is [Music] is [Music] [Music] [Music] is [Music] [Music] [Music] is [Music] is a reading from the word of god written in the letter of paul to the romans the 10th chapter beginning at the 8th verse romans 10 verse 8 the word is near you on your lips and in your heart that is the word of faith that we proclaim because if you confess with your lips that jesus is lord and believe in your heart that god has recently led you will be saved for one believes with the heart and souls does the fade and one confesses the mouth and is so saved the scripture says no one who believes in him will be put to shame for his whole distinction between jew and greed the same lord is lord of all and and is generous all call upon him for everyone who calls on him the lord shall be saved this is the word of the lord [Music] the gradual hymn 481 [Music] so oh oh [Music] foreign oh [Music] is [Music] hey [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] is [Music] oh [Music] [Music] oh [Music] the lord be with you the continuation of the holy gospel of our lord jesus christ according to saint luke the fourth chapter beginning to read at the first verse at that time after his baptism jesus full of the holy spirit returned from the jordan and was led by the spirit in the wilderness where for forty days he was tempted by the devil he ate nothing at all during those days and when they were over he was famished the devil said to him if you are the son of god command this stone to become a loaf of bread jesus answered him it is written one does not live by bread alone then the devil led him up and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world and the devil said to him to you i will give their glory and all this authority for it has been given over to me and i will give it to anyone i please if you then will worship me it will all be yours jesus answered him it is written worship the lord your god and serve him only then the devil took him to jerusalem and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple saying to him if you are the son of god throw down yourself from here for it is written he will command his angels concerned in you to protect you and on their hands they will bear you up so that you will not dash your foot against a jesus answered him it is said do not put the lord your god to the test when the devil had finished every test he departed from him until an opportune time this is the gospel of christ [Music] [Music] so let us pray almighty god may the words of my mouth and the meditation of our hearts be acceptable in your sight o lord our strength and our redeemer amen kindly sit please some words from the gospel according to saint luke the fourth chapter the first verse after his baptism jesus full of the holy spirit returned from the jordan and was led by the spirit in the wilderness where for forty days he was tempted by the devil that particular verse chosen as our text for this morning is perhaps the enduring image that is conjured up in our minds whenever we approach the season of lent the image of our lord in the desert perhaps lying down or kneeling down certainly in some distress as he endures his temptations and there have been different perspectives given on these temptations over time there are some who see them as the political struggle that jesus faced in his time what type of leadership will he exercise will he exercise the bread and circus leadership that the romans practice and the pharisees and the sadducees and the chief priests were very much involved in or will his leadership be different but then there are those who take the more theological slant to look a little deeper at the temptations and one such person was thomas aquinas that great theologian of the church in the 13th century one who is still highly revered in theological circles it was thomas aquinas who saw jesus's temptation in the wilderness as a second form of the temptation of man in the garden of eden and he saw jesus's temptation in the wilderness and his overcoming of these temptations as the first of his redemptive acts in restoring humanity and reconciling humanity back to god and so he passed the temptations on the three themes and linked them and and compared them to what was taken place in the account in genesis in the garden of eden and he said the first temptation for temptation is a progressive thing it begins with the petty things first and then gradually increases to more important things or more valuable things or things that demand more of our service and turning away from god it is similar to what the psalmist said in psalm 1 and verse 1 happy is the man who walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly no lingers in the way of sinners not sits in the seat of the scornful they're three different acts walking is a casual thing but then when you start lingering you're paying a little more attention and when you sit down you're gone poke line and sinker and so this yielding temp to temptation is a progressive thing and aquinas likened jesus's temptation in the wilderness to such and compared them with the temptations in the garden of eden he said the first lure is food drawing us to the things that give pleasure to the physical and so in the garden of eden the first temptation was eat this fruit it tastes good eat it it's good for you and similar jesus is following here that he is being tempted you know you're hungry turn the stone to bread you can do it your body needs it but jesus unlike the temptations in the garden of eden responds with holy scripture it is written that man shall not live by bread alone he is quoting the book of deuteronomy chapter 8 verse 3 and following where god said to the people of israel that is why i led you these 40 years in the wilderness and gave you manna that you knew not of but yet your sandals did not wear out so that you learn that man does not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of god so in quoting that passage jesus was really taking it from the physical to the spiritual jesus was saying that everything in life is not about the physical there are much more important things to us and that is our connection with god the spiritual so man does not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of god that is where true fortification comes and so he disbands the first temptation of the garden then he goes to the second thomas aquinas said the second temptation is about vainglory and here i should say that thomas aquinas is using the mathian version of the temptations and not the lucan versions because it's in matthew's gospel what luke has as the third temptation is the second one and what matthew has as the second is the third and their reasons for that it's believed that matthew was dealing with this whole notion of the progression of sin from the simple to the more complex whereas luke was dealing more with the geographical setting of the story if jesus is in the wilderness the most likely place he will go next is in the mountain before he moves to the city whereas matthew is doing something different so thomas aquinas is using the mathean version and so he has as the second temptation jesus being taken to the pinnacle of the temple and here he likens this to vain glory in the garden of eden the temptation was if you eat of the fruit it will open your eyes you will see better you will see more clearly what is around you you'll become more prominent you'll be able to do more things around here and likewise in the temptations in the wilderness if you jump off this pinnacle you know that god has already told you he will bear you up on eagle's wings and he will not let you dash your foot against the stone show people how good you are show them how powerful your god is and how he works in you so jesus was being challenged to proclaim to perform a miracle for nothing just for glory just to show how good you are just to show that it can be done and that god is working in you and sometimes we are led to those things as well where we are led to vain glory just doing things to be recognized by others this is what jesus spoke about in sin matthew's gospel chapter six that passage that is used on us wednesday a part of the sermon on the mount when you pray do not go on the street corners as the hypocrites do for they love to go there with loud speakers and make loud elaborate prayers so that they may be praised by others they have already received their reward but when you pray you go into your room and you lock the door and your heavenly father who hears in secret will reward you when you give arms do not do like the hypocrites do because they love to give arms so that people can see what they're given and can praise them for that they have already received their reward when you give arms do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing when you fast do not look dismal like the hypocrites do because they like to disfigure their faces so that people can see that they're fast and say oh lord he's so pious that he said when you fast you wash your face and anoint your head put on a cheerful countenance let your fasting be in here where your heavenly father can see you and he'll reward you for that so this is what we call vain glory where people are just doing things to be recognized and this is what jesus was challenged to do but then jesus responded again with holy scripture it is written do not put the lord your god to the test and then the third temptation should bring even more reward so thomas aquinas looked at the garden of eden experience again and he said the third temptation was do you know why god doesn't want you to eat these things you know why he told you not to eat this because if you eat it you'll become wise and you become like gods you'll be able to do the same thing that he is doing you'll have all the power in this world and that is the same lure that jesus was given when he was taken up to a high mountain we're told that satan said to him listen you all know you cast me down from heaven and all this is my territory now it all belongs to me and i can get i'm willing to give it to you all you have to do is bow down and worship me in other words here your jesus is being enticed with riches and grandeur just as in the garden of eden you'll become like gods you will have everything but again jesus responds with holy scripture worship the lord your god and serve him only you see i think it was a beijing calipsonian who said something for something something for something you don't get everything you can't get everything for nothing you have to give up something and what was being challenged of jesus here forget this god thing worship me i can give you all of this and in the same way we are be we are lord from time to time with the material things of this world this can be yours all you have to do is x y or z there's always something you have to do it never comes free all you have to do is betray someone all you have to do is trample upon the rights of someone and this can be yours it's the same temptations that we are being grown with and the hymn writer in that beautiful hymn i think it's him 91 in the ancient and modern christians thus thou see them on the holy ground how the troops of midian prowl and prowl around and throughout that hymn the writer goes through this progression of sin he goes to hearing first seeing he said christian thus thou see them how they work within tempting luring golding into sin in other words encouraging you drawing you in gradually into sin and remember the progression you walk you linger then you sit and when you sit you're gone all right so there's this luring and what does the hymn writer say but christian do not tremble never be down cast strike them by the merit of the lenten fast and then he goes on to speak about hearing christian does thou hear them how they speak you fear they're always saying good things about you but then they don't only say good things they always ask you but why are you always fasting so much and keeping these vigils why you always praying you don't need to do all that that's a little excessive isn't it you know there are people who do that but then the retort of that hymn is christian ansaboli while i breathe i pray peace shall follow battle and night shall end in day i have said all of that to say my brothers and sisters that we now as sin paul said in first corinthians chapter 15 and verse 45 we are now living the life of the last adam and not the first saint paul said the first adam became a living soul but the second adam became a life-giving spirit jesus moved from the temporal to the spiritual and so the temptations that were being offered him for temporal things and temporal glory meant nothing anymore and so too it must be for us that we must be guided to seek spiritual things and not temporal things i believe that both saint paul and thomas aquinas may have been influenced by the work of plato in his work the fidres where plato said the soul is like this charioteer trying to drive two horses and one of them is a very obedient horse that is bound to the higher virtues love and all the great virtues of this life but the other horse is unruly and is bound by the passions and the pleasures of this world and the challenge for this charioteer is to keep these two horses moving together and more often than not the unruly horse tends to throw things off that is the battle that we are facing in this life that is the battle that jesus faced in the wilderness that is the battle that that was encountered in the garden of eden there's always this lure to the passions and the pleasures and the riches of this world but jesus overturned what took place in the garden of eden and has shown us a better way that following the way of the spirit following the way that leads to the higher things is what reconciles us to god and we are being called to do the same in our time but what are the lures of the present age what are the things that are drawing us yes the temptation is still there for physical gratification and physical pleasures in this life the temptations are still there for personal aggrandizement to be recognized in this world the temptations are there still there for the material things of life in this world and many people fall every day for one or all three of these things but there is something else that is creeping up in our time that would not have been known to the writers of the gospel nor the writer thomas aquinas i believe that it is just as dangerous as the others the law of cyberspace [Music] cyberspace is a strange thing [Music] there are people nowadays who have different existences in cyberspace they have avatars and so they're not the person here they're somebody else and we know only too well if you visit facebook or anything some of the worst comments come from people you cannot identify people have these pseudonyms these other personalities on social media where they seek to destroy where they attempt and endure persons just a few weeks ago i was telling you about the anonymous q anon that has caused so much problems in this world perhaps just one person behind a computer screen with an identity that no one really can find spreading misinformation and disinformation luring christians because what they recognize is that if i put a bible verse in it there are some people who will think it's authentic and good but the temptations of jesus remind us that not everyone who says lord lord will be fit for the kingdom of heaven the temptations of jesus remind us that even those who are plotting evil no scripture too because scripture was one of the lures jump off you know that god said that he will bear you up on his eagle wings and he will not let you dash your foot against the stone that is authentic scripture that is the word of god but jesus had to be clever enough to recognize the motive behind it do not put the lord your god to the test god reveals himself in his time in his own ways we don't have to gold him and push him we do not use the gifts that god has given us for our personal glory for vainglory it is to use only for the glory of god and this is something we still need to teach in this world today for it is through our following the example of jesus in the wilderness that we will overcome the wilderness of life in this world and so i implore us remember how jesus overcame his temptations remember how he combated the forces of evil with every lure with every temptation there was a word of scripture to combat it so too we must have that word of god within us so that we can make our defense whenever we're challenged we must have that word of god so that we can combat the forces of evil even when they are using the same word of god for it is in our understanding and ingestion of this word of god that we learn to discern we are able to discern what is genuine and what is not we are able to identify as jesus was able to identify when persons are only using the scriptures for their personal gain when persons are seeking to lure us away from true service of god because the true service of god is never bound up in the material things and the pleasures of life in this world isn't that what jesus told his disciples when they said to a master behold we have forsaken all and followed you was in it for us jesus said the foxes have holes the birds of the air have nests but the son of man has not where to lay his head it is true humility it is through dedication to god that we will ultimately experience the true pleasures that come from a life of service with god so i encourage us during this lenten season become more immersed in the word of god study it go into it be challenged by it be challenged by some of the things that appear to be contradictions as i pointed out to you this morning matthew and luke give the story of the temptation in a different sequence but their job was not to tell history they are there telling you deeper truths that can be found in this how it can be meaningful to us in our lives as we face our challenges in this world and so when we encounter these anomalies and holy scripture do not just put down the bible and say look i can't understand this cool go even further search continue to search the word of god so that it may become an integral part of us and our experiences in this world because i can tell you learn from the temptations the forces of evil out there probably no more scripture than some of us who come to church and you know why they know it because they recognize that because we don't know it so well i'll throw the sprat and catch a fish i can roar them just as the devil did it is written the devil said that you know he know he knows the scripture it is written and there are many out there who would tell us it is written but look at the motive and look at what is written and what what it really says it says that god will bear us up on his wings yes he'll give his angels charge over us lest we dash a foot against a stone but it doesn't mean we put ourselves in harm's way just for to prove that that can happen for that is put in the lord to the test that is something different and so we have to have this power of discernment and so i encourage us remember that jesus has already shown us the way to redemption he has overturned what happened in the garden of eden he has overturned the the cravings for the pleasures of this world he has overturned the cravings for vain glory he has overturned the craving for extreme pride and great wealth in this world and shown us that that is not what is necessary in this life what is necessary in this life is to worship the lord your god and serve him only and remember that man does not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of god and to remember not to put the lord your god to the test he will take care of you but you do not put yourself in harm's way just to prove it to others for you may come up short for that is not what god promised of us and so as you go through your 40 days and forty nights as we go through this period of discernment let us lay ourselves bare let us confront ourselves so that we can overcome whatever the challenges are for us in this life we can overcome those things that are luring us and gold in us and striving and tempting so that we can live better lives of service to god in this world and like our lord and savior jesus christ be exemplars for others of how we can lead a life of service and reconciliation to god may he guide us all during this lenten season to face our temptations head on and like our lord by the strength of the word of god overcome all that the forces of evil may send at us amen let us now stand and reaffirm our faith in almighty god as we say together the words of the nicene creed we believe in one god uh foreign uh yes intercession form d our heavenly father has promised through our lord jesus christ to hear us when we pray in faith let us therefore pray for the church and the world and let us thank god for his goodness we pray for the church of god in every place especially
