good morning everybody how you doing today my name's andrew i'm tracy i'm daniel i'm megan i'm matt i'm taylor i'm grandpa and we're some of the veggie boys and girls and we'd like to thank you for stopping by [Music] welcome back everybody we just got the farm market all set up and now we just finished feeding animals we've been very fortunate we've had a stretch of dry days which has really dried out our area down here making it a lot easier for us to work where's matilda at we're looking for matilda right now right there outside before we run off and get working on some other things we are bedding up the cows the pen wasn't even that wet it just got to the point where we felt like it needed some bedding and we've noticed one of the best ways to keep your pens dry is to not let them get overly wet so that's why we always try and add bedding on top just to keep everything fluffy and dry we are up in front of the store right now going through all our bins of pumpkins we're trying to make sure that we don't have any rotting pumpkins in these bins with all the moisture in the air that's something that can happen so we're going through we're taking out all of the bad pumpkins that we have and we're consolidating bins which basically moving bins that are emptier taking the pumpkins out of them and putting them into bins that are fuller and we're trying to make a little bit of room because we're actually going out to the field to pick up some pumpkins today yesterday we went and walked through the entire pumpkin field seeing if there was anything left that we could take and we got a nice selection of pumpkins put aside out there so today we're gonna go and pick them up and see how much we have [Music] now we have been really busy on the farm lately but one thing i haven't been able to show you is that our greenhouse oh it's empty now we made the transition a few months back from summer annuals into fall moms and well we're almost sold out of mums so one big job that needs to happen now is we need to clean and sanitize this entire greenhouse and maybe it's not necessary to deep clean and sanitize this entire greenhouse we could just scrape the dirt off and clean the tables but we want to make sure that we have no disease in here and nothing that's going to cause us problems for the start of our next season [Music] you can see over here the tables have not been cleaned yet and there's a lot of dirt in our walkways and over here is what we want our tables and walkways to look like realistically autumn is going to be working on cleaning this a large greenhouse and the greenhouse down over the hill um because in about five months we're going to need to get started with summer annuals again it's amazing how fast time will go and it's better to get all this stuff cleaned while it's relatively warm out because if we waited till the middle of january or the beginning of february to try and clean all that stuff uh we would have some problems 18 19 20 right here they're too big you think they're too big yeah no well they weren't soft 18 19 20. 20. no this is 20. killing me we're getting an order of small pumpkins put together for a school and dad was explaining to me you can't have some kids getting bigger pumpkins than the others they cry yeah andrew cried when he got a small pumpkin in one day that was like two years ago why are you bringing that up it's embedded in my memory now because we already have the pumpkins harvested and on piles we don't really have to worry about picking them up right now we aren't expecting any rain today so we shouldn't have to worry about the pumpkins rotting in the field but a job that we do need to take care of is getting our potatoes harvested it smells like dirt out here smells pretty good daniel and dad are going to continue harvesting potatoes i'm going to start picking them up usually it's a one-man job to dig the potatoes but that old picker the chains are worn out on it so sometimes it gets jammed up so dana has to ride along with them now last year we were having trouble with the planter when we got to these potatoes and i can notice it's a little thinner in some spots but the potatoes that are here they look really nice [Applause] [Music] how these red potatoes get in here must have had some left over in the planter now if anybody is curious if i'm getting tired of all this bending over the answer is yes but fortunately we are almost done with digging potatoes for the year so i think we'll have one more day of digging after today but it always brings me a lot of joy when you see beautiful potatoes like this our family eats a lot of potatoes so this just makes me hungry [Music] we just got done picking up all of the potatoes you look down through the row you can see we've got plenty of baskets there now something that brings me a lot of joy is that we only have two more rows of potatoes to dig and then we are done with our potatoes for the year but that also kind of makes me sad potatoes are like one of the last things we really harvest for the year oh but that's farming we got to get ready for next year look at this wheat this wheat is getting ready for next year hey hey taxi taxi yeah i see you come on it's lunch time remember to buckle up for safety that kale looks like little trees so we're just gonna pick those potatoes up after lunch we're already late to lunch so we didn't want to make the girls wait any longer all righty all right grammy what are we having for lunch today oh she made seafood salads and the neat thing is look at this bowl that's an edible bowl so joel how were the horses today they were good no issues today how about the donkeys andrew things did not go well with them let me tell you they got out on me they went the wrong direction it was chaos you forgot to shut the left door didn't you hello how are you doing today she just woke up she must have been doing pretty good if she just got done with a nap we just got finished with lunch and we want to head out and pick up those potatoes that we already harvested but before we do that we're gonna bag some because we don't have any for the farm market now this job is pretty simple it's literally just taking the potatoes and setting them in the bag however there are some things we are looking for if there's any cuts or bruises uh for example right here this one is kind of dirty and we have a green spot there this is something that we would just end up feeding to the animals i hope you're hungry i got a snack for you so we came back out to the potato field to pick up the potatoes but dad decided we were gonna harvest the rest of them which i'm not gonna say i didn't see this coming i knew this was gonna happen which is okay with me because as soon as we get the potatoes out of here we are gonna come through and rock pick this whole section and then we'll get some cover crop planted in here the only problem i see with harvesting all these potatoes is we're down two pickers today joel was here for a brief moment before we went for lunch however he has to go and pick up grain for his horses this afternoon and matthew is at the auction all day so we're not going to see much of him [Music] now my dad and daniel had to go back to the farm because someone just called and placed an order for 12 bags of potatoes and we didn't have enough so they are filling those up but now i have matthew out here with me well something very exciting just happened dad tell them what happened the cows come home oh we just finished picking up potatoes so you know what that means now we need to have a potato party no [Music] that's on the down low it's not on the down low at the end of the year everybody that helped pick up potatoes comes and we make a lot of french fries we make chips but it's always just the family that picks up potatoes anyway so it's only the family that comes [Music] well we can put four more on four more four [Music] there goes the last of the potatoes for the year it's amazing how fast we harvested these potatoes and it's amazing how fast this year has gone by it feels like just the other day we were planting them one of the things i always mention about farming that i love is that you don't do the same job every day now there will be periods of time where we go through and we're picking for example tomatoes and peppers every single day of the week now this job digging up potatoes and picking them by hand it's not fun being bent over and picking up potatoes for hours on end it can actually start to bother even our backs and we do this all the time but even then i don't like to complain about a job like this because it's already done we did this for two weeks out of our year and that's one of the biggest reasons why we don't like to complain about our work even though this was hard you know being bent over it's rough on the body it was only two weeks of picking and you know how you can really tell you enjoy something now that we're finished with potatoes and i'm happy we're finished i am kind of sad we're not gonna be picking them anymore but there's always next year what cows these are not for you the second we brought all these potatoes home the cows lined up thinking they were gonna get a snack no no snacks right now same deal as last time we harvested potatoes we are not gonna wash these they store better unwashed so we're gonna fill up our bins so that we can stack them inside the shop and then we'll be good now right where our farm market is there used to be a barn however back in 2003 the barn had burned down it was it was terrible however we were able to completely rebuild and underneath the farm market we put a large storage area that we call the potato storage now when it comes to storing potatoes you want to keep them in a cool dry area and that's what this storage space does for us so we're able to keep our potatoes in here and we call it the potato storage so if we ever call it that you guys know what we're talking about [Music] now something interesting i'd like to share with you last year we planted more potatoes but we got less potatoes and now we fast forward to this year we planted less potatoes but we harvested more we figured out what the problem with the planter was and we had a nice growing year early in the season however a lot of you remember that we dealt with a lot of rain this year and when we say a lot of rain it was a lot of rain so as vegetable farmers that always brings a lot of concern because you're worried about disease however with our potatoes we're not worried about them getting a disease now that they're harvested what we're worried about is that our potatoes won't be able to store as well as they would have in past years a potato is made up of eighty percent water so if you raise that by even a few percent well then your potatoes won't store as well because they become waterlogged and all that water makes it a lot easier for those potatoes to start rotting now all the rain we did get was pretty nice for this year we didn't have to worry too much about irrigating and because we didn't have to worry about irrigating as often it allowed us to open up our time and put it into other jobs that needed to be finished however as you guys have seen throughout our fields a lot of water means a lot of disease now we for sure aren't done with harvest season there's still plenty to pick but so far it's been a good year we had a lot of people here to help close up i didn't film it sadly because it went so quick but as you can see everything's put away for the night grammy what are we having for dinner tonight fake chicken little potatoes fried potatoes red beets and string beans italian beans are you ready for dinner tonight another starving day yeah yep okay good because i'm hungry alrighty guys we just got up to the house we're gonna sit down and we're gonna eat our dinner we want to thank you everyone for watching and we hope to see you next time bye bye bye say bye bye bye bye
