good morning everybody how you doing today my name's andrew my name's matt i'm troll good morning i'm dad and i'm daniel and we're some of the veggie boys and we want to thank you for stopping by if you're new here consider subscribing we can grow some nice vegetables but we can't grow this channel without your help what are you looking at dad all that cabbage that we grew my name again so back in spring when we were getting ready to plant our cabbage we originally had enough cabbage but the cows came through and they caused the problem they ate some of our cabbage so we needed a tiny cabbage bailout from another farmer so not all of this cabbage is ours some of it is another local farmer but we appreciate the cabbage bailout from him i tell you what if it wasn't for those cows we would have had plenty of cabbage so the place where we're taking this they don't have a forklift to unload it so we have to unload it by hand yeah that's rough so i know myself matthew and daniel are going and then joel is going to disc some ground gonna be a lot of cabbage download by hand we throw it all into the bins and now we have to take it out of the bins if you guys were curious what all that cabbage looked like outside of the bins look at that and all this is for sauerkraut so it's all one order we just got all that cabbage unloaded it was quite a bit of cabbage we had a problem with the truck wasn't making it up the hill so that made it a little more difficult but hey we got it taken care of didn't we daniel yep yeah so now we're heading back to the farm we were on our way home and we forgot we left one of our wagons at the at one of our neighbors farms they needed straw that we bailed for them so now we gotta hook that wagon up to this wagon so we can take it home we just got done unloading all that cabbage and i get here and guess what dad tells me we have to do we're making sauerkraut that's what those guys are doing so not only were we delivering cabbage for style kraut now we're gonna make sauerkraut too look at matt's head first thing we gotta do before we're making sauerkraut is wash the hands so guys this is exciting this is something that really tells us that fall is coming um we have a whole bin of our cabbage right here so what we're gonna be doing i just got the knives cleaned off dad already got the table scrubbed down we take everything and we bleach it and clean it really good this is basically my whole job i come through here with the knife i take off the bottom then i split it in half just like that then you see this core part here this will not shred up so i need to take that out so i'm going to take as little of the cabbage with the core as i can so that one was pretty good just like that and there you go now it's ready for matthew so then i just slide them down and then matthew will take them and he will shred them oh so the way this thing works is this drum inside has a bunch of basically like spinning a bunch of blades on the outside of it so when you put the cabbage up here and push down on it it'll shred the cabbage as it goes down you end up with shredded cabbage perfect for sauerkraut when i'm cutting no this it fits fine then we add the salt to it and then we pack it down a little bit after we put a couple in because the trick to good sauerkraut too is you have to have a good pack i have a little tip for you also we just fill a five gallon bucket of water and then pack it down with that it's been washed and disinfected and we have clean water in it so i can't reach the bottom of the barrel but we want to get it packed well also a little side tip some people want to make sauerkraut early but if you let your sauerkraut have a frost on it a little bit of a freeze your cabbage it makes the cabbage sweeter makes a better sauerkraut some people add other things to those sauerkraut they may add caraway seed they may add allspice they may add apples uh different things like that you make it the way you like it some people put a whole head of cabbage in there too really makes good jalopki's because the whole head of cabbage will ferment so the old way of making sauerkraut was to cut it really thin or they had these boards that had a blade sticking up on the board like that big of a gap and then you run the cabbage across it and it would slice the cabbage real quick and those were pretty worked fine they just took a long time and if you're like my dad you took the tips of your fingers off a couple times i lost the tips of these four fingers yeah you gotta throw out all the sounds yeah you gotta throw out all the sauerkraut your fingers the fingers will heal but you'll have to start over on the sauerkraut that was about 40 years ago so this this machine this thing here is wonderful especially when you have a dad who wants you to make 300 pounds of sauerkraut you can go a lot faster so normally it comes out but sometimes you get a pile in there you gotta also the salt that you use in the sauerkraut cannot have iodine in it so you don't want to just use table salt you need to have regular canning salt that does not contain iodine so what i'm doing here guys is you saw earlier i was cutting them but i'm cleaning them off and then i'll roll them over and i'll look for things like this and then i will take that and clean that off and i'm basically just looking for any imperfections and stuff in the cabbage so when i split this open i'm just making sure that everything looks good then i take the core out and then this one's ready to go sometimes when they're too big we'll quarter them so it's a little easier on matthew with his machine because i it's harder it gets harder for the guy who's cutting up the cabbage to have to go through all those halves because it is tiring on your arms so that's what matt's doing but i basically i i center that i take that off and i split this in half i check to make sure there's no imperfections i core it and then we're good and then all these excess leaves that are here these all get swiped into the wheelbarrow and then we use those for the cows andrew andrew i have a question what's up dad does the cabbage leaves give the cows gas as we get closer to times when families are getting together we will go through a lot more sauerkraut um even with everything going on this year we're expecting to go through a lot of sauerkraut because we've been busier so what we're thinking is we're gonna need almost a thousand pounds of sauerkraut maybe that would be crazy for us because we usually just do about 300 pounds maybe about 400 pounds but with the way things have been going this year we might be close to that thousand pound of sauerkraut mark but as long as we have the cabbage hey that's okay with us here again there's physical work where's lefty he is preparing ground for cover crop because we have to get our cover crop in the ground soon so he's he's on that right now he likes this job joel really likes cutting cabbage and he likes doing sauerkraut well he probably is going to be upset he's missing it but he enjoys being in the tractor my cousin ralph showed up you guys remember ralphie he's helping us he's finishing off the last head of cabbage here you go ladies i'll have more for you but i got you some [Music] the cows are gonna be excited it's a little easier for us to feed scraps later in the year because we don't have the pest pressure from all the bugs and the insects flying around that gives us a problem with the farm market with our hygiene that we have to be careful so we don't feed a lot of scraps to like after we get like a frost or a freeze putting weight on the sauerkraut so it packs also it packs the sauerkraut and then brings the liquid up and then there's no spoilage on top because the water will cover and seal everything we put the plastic bag on because as the sauerkraut makes gas it bubbles out through the through the plastic it's not caught in there and the plastic protects it so that nothing gets in there i don't know if it's just me or what but the air has like changed a little bit so it's starting to feel a little bit cooler i just want to show you this is what we've been working on we just got this all set up we're ready to go with some oats that's what joel has been doing all morning he's been preparing ground for cover crop and daniel's going to go plant it so that's basically what he's going to be doing all afternoon i'm going to get jerky and a half gallon iced tea and i'm going for a ride daniel has got his afternoon all planned out all right guys i'm getting ready to start the skid steer loader so i don't mean to scare you but if i do scare you i apologize i'll tell you what it is the worst getting in the skid steer loader after they bed up cows it's so dusty but a smiley face i gotta move but i just can't take it anymore i gotta spray the front out of this off [Music] i'm cleaning some stuff up around the farm because my cousin timmy and his fiancee otto are getting married so we're trying to clean things up and make it look really nice well i was gonna help dad but i heard aunt rhonda's pretty mad the turkeys are in a greenhouse so we're in trouble uh this is what aunt ronda's upset about the turkeys come up here get on the tables and then they poop on our tables i don't know if you can see but she pressure washed all this and she went through a soap and a brush and cleaned off her tables because we grow a lot of flowers and vegetables in here so you have to be careful with disease so she cleans this place like super carefully and it just upsets her that now she has to reclaim these tables ron and i took some pallets and put them over here and hopefully they can jump right up but usually if you deter them a little bit they're like ah forget it so hopefully that works cause if it doesn't work aunt ronda's gonna get rid of our turkeys we finally got done cleaning stuff up it looks really nice it's gonna be good for the wedding and the best part about this wedding grammy is making the wedding cake check this out and she had extra batter she made red velvet cupcakes bet you never seen someone feed cows and eat a cupcake before and you guys wonder how us vegetable farmers get big more cabbage more cabbage more cabbage more cabbage these guys just love their cabbage we good we good yeah yeah everybody's good the cows get excited for two things when they hear the grinder for the sauerkraut and when they hear the potato washer running because they know they're about to get snacks so what i just did was i went through and i made sure everybody has enough bedding for tonight starting to get bigger it's okay it's okay guys these are our egg layers well future egg layers we have about 200 here and these are where our eggs in our farm market are going to come from shortly in about 18 more weeks these guys will start laying eggs i know what you guys are expecting you're expecting to see what we're having for dinner oh but it's date night so lauren and i we're going to get a snack and then we're going to bring it home we're going to watch a movie that's going to be our night all right guys that's where we're going to end the video today i want to thank everyone for watching and i hope to see you next time bye bye
