you don't have the freedom to change any other faith you are born muslim to a muslim parents and you are expected to die in that religion so when you start to question and seek other not necessarily christianity any other religion or no religion you put your life in danger and uh questioning your faith uh will will put you in troubles and there is a cause for that tell me about what made you decide to start making this change how did that happen it's linked to um being a woman you know you earlier mentioned that being a woman is very difficult in many cultures and in particular in the muslim world and i fell in love with this jesus who came to to save the world but particularly especially for women in particular women they were of of some value very high valued for jesus and and there are so many stories in the new testament tell us about how he interacted with women the woman who caught it was caught on adultery in john 8 how he choose to just forgive her but he had to die on the cross for her and that was bringing me to know him i didn't meet a missionary by then i didn't have a bible by then i was at the university a student a student at the department of history and i was learning about my north african history and tunisia has a history with christianity which a lot of people wouldn't realize tell me about that that's what you were learning about right well uh i am i am and i'm very proud of the heritage we have uh people tend to think that tunisia is a muslim country but we have a very deep roots in christianity we have given to the western world the church fathers augustine tertilian uh the famous saying for italian the blood of the martyr is a holy seed but we forget that rettilian was one of ours he was my ancestor that's amazing okay so you're learning in history class about this jesus you're becoming interested in it surely you knew that there would be a huge risk to make a decision to actually converge so was there a struggle with a debate well just to make a small clarification i wasn't learning about jesus specifically i was learning about christianity as the religion of the state uh why it vanished and i i became interested to learn more about that and then that led me to learn more about jesus um so back to your question um jesus made the decision to to die on the cross for me and that's the highest cost in uh uh learning about jesus and learning about what god was doing from the beginning before i was born it led me to him i came to an encounter with god at genesis chapter 12 the god of abraham who called him to follow him and abraham just believed in that promise and just to remember that i am a daughter of abraham and that led me to you to question am i just born muslim can i explore other faith uh learn more and i i looked for a bible and i started to read the bible and i fell in love with jesus and i started to question and ask and i um wanted to explore further this uh this faith and and with the help some some people on the ground helped me to understand better uh the what jesus did on the cross for me and i received him as my savior okay so tell me that moment because we say that a lot in the christian world we receive them as our city and then we move on but what is that moment like you know did you was it did you have an experience it's something it's amazing it's uh i i used to be an introvert believe it or not really no i should not be on that and uh was feeling lonely and uh and i i felt that i was not fitting within this religion as a woman and i wanted to learn more about who i am exactly as a daughter of abraham what is the relationship i have with god and when i started to read the bible i i believed in every word that was written in it and i believed in this man who so much loved me that he gave his life on the cross for me and dying on the cross it's not an easy it's a horrific job it's a horrific death it's it's it's difficult and reading through that i was convinced that this is the only way only jesus can take me to the father my father the father of abraham and i'm the the daughter of the covenant so i it took me back to him and i submitted a lot in my life and i i said well god i don't know much i don't have so much theology this is about two decades ago i don't know so much and i don't think i need it more but i strongly believe every word written here can you help me understand it it doesn't need too much theological understanding to follow jesus that's why he called us to be like the little children and i was by that so you made this incredibly brave decision but a lot of people in your life perhaps didn't celebrate that just we talked about the culture so was there consequences for you once you decided that right away thank you you're very kind he said it's a brave decision to me it was a crazy decision and i thought because again to be fair for my culture in tunis it is it is very tolerant a certain level culture that we had jewish in tunis we had all kind of people uh in and we lived together we grew up together my mother's best friend was a jewish and we never looked at her says she was a jewish or we were muslims and and so many other people around and from other nationalities so we when you grow up in that um context you think that's the world that's common um so right away when i i use i be i we say i became now christian but that by then i didn't know what i was i was just like wow i decided i'm no longer muslim but i i'm following this jesus i told everywhere everyone and everywhere you know you go on top of the roof and because i'm happy i have a joy and i wanted to everyone to experience what i was experiencing there was unspeakable peace in my heart that i wanted to share it with everyone started with my mother my siblings and it was not easy because right away the decision was made is you don't have too many choices you can you want to be christian you have to leave if you want to stay here you just forget this entire uh story and um as if it didn't happen and um if you know me well you know that i am crazy and uh and i was so driven by this love story of i'm i've been living since with a jesus that i wanted to to to to go and follow him and um yes i was rejected by my family by my colleagues knowing that when they did that they wanted to protect me knowing that how hard and costly to leave islam so they did it as an act of love that's a unique perspective and i'm so thankful to god that uh i've been reconciled with a lot of my family members and i'm i'm i'm very accepted they they know now that i made a decision um out of conviction it's not a crazy decision and they respect that and i really appreciate that that's amazing now you work with people who are making this decision all over the world many of them as you said in the wake of isis or other terrorist groups are paying with their lives they're being tortured yes tell me what it's like to work with those people and what do you tell what do you tell them they are the heroes the they are the courageous people who lay their lives for their conviction for following jesus it is difficult it's extremely difficult just uh remembering one story i'm not mentioning the country if you don't mind it's just a colleague of mine told us this story one of her contacts in a very um difficult place she was burned alive when her family learned about her uh decision to follow jesus and found out that and it's this is one story among thousands and thousands of stories but the church is growing the church from muslim background all over the world has grown is a strong and people are daring to face the cost they're willing because the peace the joy of eternal life that they have in within them it's worth the price you
