Ex-Mormon Reacts to *THAT* South Park Episode for the First Time

hello welcome to my channel welcome back if you're returning today we're doing a video that i've been pretty excited about so i have actually never seen the episode of south park about mormonism and i grew up mormon my whole life i've heard just a little bit about it i'm interested to see how accurate it is because i do know that the people who made south park also made the book of mormon musical so i'm just going to start i don't know what to expect i've never screen recorded before a few moments later here we go dinner they've got four kids five kids well that's great you can join us for family home they're having family home evening also the um the mom looks spot on i'm not i'm not sure when this was made probably early 2000s late 2000s they're going to tell the story of joseph smith how exciting joseph smith lived in a little american town in the early i 1800s my wife that you spoke with god and jesus and she didn't believe it whether it's true i did where this is martin harris and suddenly god and church jesus i i can tell why they're telling the story this way because it's from a mormon family's point of view the story of the first vision didn't actually um exist until well after the church was established a lot of things joseph smith just kind of added in [Music] but retroactively skin is white yes native americans were white we all came to america from jerusalem and amy looks like glenn beck and as punishment god turned their skin red these are the native americans you know today this is actually pretty in-depth for um a south park song i didn't expect it to be in song form so that's fun oh the rice crispy squares are done the rice crispy squares crap he's wrong yeah i if a random family invited my child to their house and taught them random religious stuff i would be really angry [Music] squares with chocolate frosting they're so good their house is decorated like a church that's funny you just heard your son talking about religious ideals that aren't your own and you said who the heck do these people think they are the heck is a nice touch yes we're back inside the store box huh okay there's the breastplate there i've heard of the breastplate it's interesting that it has a cross on it but mormons do not like crosses they would never put a cross on anything but the stones themselves are really interesting i've never seen them look like that before i'd be interested to see how exactly he uses them later on they were the most amazing things so where are they where what the gold plates and these airstones where are they oh oh well i was not allowed to take them i love this so far i think this is exactly what mormons picture when they think about joseph smith spreading the good word of the book of mormon he's just out on the town square and everyone's like yeah it's like those stories on tumblr where it's like and then everyone their family over clapped dinner tomorrow night this is a never-ending string of dinners from now on our family is mormon oh no we're back this is martin harris the other person was not martin harris but both martin harris and that other guy had a wife that was just like right i am not on board with this you take this oh the hat they've got the hat in the room so let's see if they use the hat they're trying to show the ridiculousness of the joseph smith story but from the perspective of a mormon so it's it's not entirely accurate because a little boy wouldn't know this stuff growing up the church was not that uh open about the rock and the hat thing also fun fact i think i've been to martin harris's gravestones okay so this is kind of a mix of different translation strategies uh he didn't actually look at the plates ever when he was translating them they were always like off to the side and then he would put the rock in the hat and put his face in the hat the plates were never in the hat the fact that he has the face and the hat is the big thing though the other details are kind of minor to me [Music] [Music] i love how they just like yelling the word dumb over and over because that's how i felt when i first learned about the rock in the hat just dumb dumb you brought jello i wrote it all down and we're gonna publish it into a book how do you know he isn't just making stuff up and pretending he's translating on golden plates lucy harris sounds so cool and she had to put up with so much [ __ ] if joseph smith really is translating then he'll be able to do it again lucy i don't think ever showed martin where she put the pages and they were never recovered wow so like yeah joseph smith was just constantly making up [ __ ] to cover his ass i love how everyone who studies mormon history comes to the conclusion that martin harris was just stupid wait mormons actually know this story and they still believe joseph well sure the story proves it doesn't it proves it all out are you blind it's all a matter of faith no it's a matter of logic if you're gonna say things that have been proven wrong like that the first man and woman lived in missouri and the native americans came from jerusalem then you better have something to back it up all you've got are a bunch of stories about some ass wife who read plates nobody ever saw out of a hat and then couldn't do it again when the translations were hidden that's a super super good way of putting that the truth is i don't care if joseph made it all up because what the church teaches now is loving your family being nice and helping people that would be nice if that's all the church taught wouldn't it oh it's over [Music] yeah uh-huh i have to record my final thoughts pretty quickly because i have to go that was fun i really really enjoyed the music part they only covered the book of mormon part of it which there's so much more than that to the mormon religion i'd be interested to know anybody else's experience with this episode if you're not mormon and you saw this and you didn't know any mormons I was so pissed that it took a south park episode to show me how stupid the church narrative of why Joseph couldn't retranslate the lost pages was. Like, no one would notice someone scribbling out various words and making subtle changes to make it look like Joseph couldn't retranslate anything. Like, if you got 95% of the book the same, that's a pretty good sign you were actually translating and not making things up.
