TIL 1 minute is perpetual

I remember the quote read here some while ago: if it's a perpetual working machine involving magnets just leave.

It's a clever trick, but it's just spinning on a bearing, not doing any work. The energy comes from the initial spin and potential energy stored in the arm. That's enough to spin a wheel for a while.

They could have omitted the magnets and mechanisms entirely, and just have a weight pull a lever to rotate the wheel, and it would run for just as long (probably longer, as there is less friction). And guess what: this is how many old-fashioned clocks work.

They showed where the magnets were arranged in order to launch some other magnets out of the middle like a railgun, and then they reversed the process so that, essentially, the ammo stays still, and the gun moves, requiring the gradient seen on the wheels. The bar has to be moved at the end of the "gun" (simulating firing the gun and reloading) or else the magnet's force would stop the machine. The machine uses it's own centripetal force to move the bar up, and gravity pulls it back down.

Energy flows between different forms, but it still wears out of the system as friction (and heat). Here, the different forms of energy are kinetic (varying rotation speed), potential (bar going up and down) and magnetic (distance between magnets varying). The "engine" will turn for a time with the initial energy (potential energy from the bar falling at the beginning), then it will slow down to a complete stop. But obviously, they never show you that.

It's similar to a well balanced mechanical metronome. It can go for ages but the frequency reduces with every oscillation until it stops

Perpetual motion is a laugh. As long as friction(or air resistance) is present (even the smallest coefficient with ball bearings) then infinite motion is impossible. Even if we break it down to philosophical standards we won't be able to prove it's perpetual without experiencing this motion indefinitely(although same goes for proving that perpetual motion is impossible). In addition it's a misleading title with "working free energy" because the object is not producing anything for practical use.

How is this done?

I would have a big coil under the table.

Let me first state that the contraption that this person created does work. If released the wheel will continue to spin far longer than that of the video. That said, this is not perpetual motion nor free energy.

First if you don't understand the thought process behind his evolution go read up on magnets. He describes the evolution pretty well. It can be kind of hard to figure out just by looking at but at 30 secs you can see that the cart obviously wants to move forward but then is repelled back into the opposite direction. He solves this by increasing the distance from the cart to the magnet in the next evolution. Because the magnetic force is a distance dependent force, moving the magnet up reduces the recoiling force seen in the original cart enough so that it moves past it without its velocity being reversed. That's all fine and dandy if you have a good understanding of how multiple magnets orientated correctly work.

To keep the wheel spinning he adds the arm which applies an upward force on the magnet each time it passes by the recoiling portion of the wheel. I'm pretty confident that the amount of kinetic energy gained as it rotates is much greater than the energy lost to move the magnet up and down. The problem that most people have at this is that this will just run forever then. Not exactly.

Magnets in general aren't truly permanent magnets. Eventually magnets lose their "magnetism" when exposed to other magnetic fields. An easy way to magnetize something is simply taking an iron rod and applying a very massive magnetic field around it. This aligns the domains of the iron so that it becomes a magnet. You can do this same process with a weaker magnetic field, however it require more time in this magnetic field to acquire the same strength.

Going back to Newton's Third for every action there is an equal opposite reaction. While the magnets on the wheel are being pushed by the bouncing magnet, so is the bouncing magnet being pushed by the wheel. Why is this important? If you apply a magnetic field opposite to a magnet's own field, you essentially do the opposite of magnetizing. The external magnetic field attempts to align the domains in the magnet with its own which are in the opposite direction. If left alone for long enough the domains will realign to that magnetic field. There must then be a middle point when the magnet is no longer magnetized.

It is here where I can say that both does it work and that it doesn't create free energy. While the wheel will run the magnet slowly decreases in strength as time goes on. You'll eventually have to buy a new magnet. Instead of calling this a perpetual motion device I would rather call this a contraption which converts energy stored in the aligned domains of the magnet into mechanical energy. We include friction into all of this and we satisfy all thermodynamic laws.

The reason why we use gas engines instead of extremely powerful magnets is that the torque generated by such devices are extremely low. These also wreak havoc on electrical systems.

Tldr; not perpetual motion but still outputs energy because magnets don't stay magnets forever.
