The lightsaber is the weapon of a Jedi, who
uses it to protect the weak of the Galaxy from evil… It’s color comes from the force affinity
of a user at the moment they harvest their kyber crystal, but the design of the hilt
is an expression of the Order’s creativity, needs and requirements of the time. This led to a huge variety of hilt designs
across the years, each serving specific purposes. So let’s break down every single lightsaber
type in Star Wars Canon, and what they mean! HIt that subscribe button and lets get into
it. **Number 1. The Standard Single Bladed Lightsaber.** This
lightsaber was the most common across the Jedi Order and although was less common among
Dark Side Orders, it was still widely used. The sabers produce a single blade of plasma,
in the color of the kyber crystal inserted inside of it. Importantly though, these sabers can only
operate at a single length, which is determined when it is constructed by it’s user… This will be important in some later variants. **At number 2. we have the Standard Double Bladed Lightsaber**. This was a variant enjoyed mostly by Dark
Side orders like the Sith, and they contained two kyber crystals inside. Both sides of the blade could emit two different
colours, although this was pretty difficult to achieve because of how kyber crystal color
is determined, through the traits and personality of the user when collecting it. The reason these blades were preferred by
Dark Side orders were not only because they were more offensive in style, but also because
they required two kyber crystals. This inherently requires greed when collecting
your crystals, forcing more than one to align to you at once… **For number 3. there is the flickerphase lightsaber.** This
is an incredibly rare form of lightsaber which has been modified to allow it’s blade to
ignite and extinguish at random times during a battle. As you can imagine, this makes using it extremely
difficult, even for the most skilled of Jedi, but if it was mastered, it was one of the
most deadly. Now in the Jedi order, turning off your saber
in the middle of battle is considered extremely dishonorable, and for that reason, this saber
was generally frowned up and you’d probably be bullied for crafting it as a young Padawan… **Number 4. we have the lava crystal Lightsaber. These** sabers were created by inserting a
type of Lava crystal into a regular lightsaber. These crystals were extremely rare, and only
found on the hellish world of Mustafar, meaning nearly no Jedi used them. When ignited, it’s blade would become thick
and generate extreme heat. Not to mention it would spew out huge chunks
of flame and lava, sometimes hitting its user… Because of this, they were very rarely used. **At number 5. is the Sickle-Bladed lightsaber.** This blade
was used in ancient times by an extreme sect of the Sith, including Darth Noctyss, and
was curved at it’s end. Over the years, no Jedi historian was ever
able to figure out how this blade was crafted, but it was believed to be incredibly effective
at taking the heads of opponents off due to it’s shape. **Moving to number 6. we have the hinged double bladed lightsaber.**
This variant is based off the standard double bladed weapon preferred by the Sith, but featured
a hinge in the centre of the hilt. Both blades could be activated while the weapon
was collapsed, which allowed it to trap the blade of an emey. The most prominent user of this weapon was
Jedi General Pong Krell, which makes a ton of sense because of both his size and tendency
towards the Dark Side. A white variant was also used by an Umbaran
Jedi named Orla Jareni during the high republic, and Dark Rey used one too. **After that at Number 7. is the Double Bladed Spinning Lightsaber used
by the Inquisitors.** This weapon was crafted by Members of Darth Vader’s inquisitorious
and it allowed the user to spin both blades at incredibly high speeds. It could also be used with only one blade,
and could even detach if necessary, allowing it’s wielder to use Jar Kai, the Double
bladed form. Finally, this blade could also be utilized
as a helicopter, making it a great method of escape for Inqusitors… Although that is very controversial, so let
me know in the comments, saber copters or no saber copters… Just don’t get too heated down there. **Next up at Number 8, is the Bifurcating
Cyclical-Ignition pulse saber.** In short, this saber allowed it’s wilder to ignite
it under water. The technology was discovered by Kit Fisto,
who of course comes from the water world of Glee Anselm, and it basically made the saber
operate on two ignition sources, alternating and preventing it from shorting out. Soon after this discovery, Kit Fisto recorded
the knowledge in the Great Jedi Holocron and many other Jedi added it to their own blades,
including Anakin Skywalker. **At number 9. there is the elegant, Curved-Hilt Lightsaber.**
This was the style used by Count Dooku, and his underling Asajj Ventress. The reason Dooku cited for using a curved
blade was because it changed the trajectory of his swings, and allowed him to make more
precise strikes. Most opponents who faced this curved hilt
would be caught off guard by the precise changes in trajectory, making them extremely vulnerable. On top of this, two curved blades could be
connected into one, turning into an extremely deadly, uneven double bladed lightsaber. **Coming in at number 10. we have the Broadsaber.** This was a type
of weapon that was highly frowned upon by the Jedi order because it was considered barbaric
and weak. Due to specialized focusing lenses inside,
it produces a broader and flatter blade, kinda like a traditional metal sword or the Darksaber. Many masters believed that it was less elegant
that typical round blades, but acknowledged that it was great for Form 1 Lightsaber combat. **At number 11. is the Saber Cane.** This was a weapon that
combined a lightsaber with a walking cane, and was primarily used by Older Force users. The two examples we have in Canon are Terra
Sinube who used a sabercane to conceal his weapon when travelling, and Darth Maul, who
did the same on Malachor, combing it with the hilt of an inquistior that he killed. Sadly, Terra Sinube was captured and put into
Amber, so the location of his saber cane in currently unknown. **Next up at number 12 is the is the Light
Club, also known as the Great Lightsaber.** Not much is known about this type in Canon,
but we do know that they were incredibly oversized lightsabers built for huge bodies alien species. They were very heavy and awkward to use, and
often featured heavy duty power cells, along with hard reinforcement. They were also far longer than two meters
in length, allowing the alien user to keep his distance in any combat situation. **At number 13. Is the Lightfoil.** The Lightfoil is a very
interesting type of saber that was primarily designed for 1 handed use, almost like a fencing
sword. This weapon was developed by ancient Sith
Lords, and produced a much weaker and smaller blade, and it’s hilt was so small that two
handed use was impossible. The Light Foil was also the most popular type
of lightsaber to use among non force users, since it was significantly easier to wield
than a normal blade. **At Number 14. is the Lightsaber Rifle.** Instead of using
the lightsaber as a weapon itself, this weapon was a blaster that literally used that as
ammunition. After the weapon was loaded up with a lightsaber,
it’s user only had a few shots before it would completely overheat and melt on them. This was used by Jedi Librarian Jocasta Nu
when she returned to the Jedi temple After Order 66, in order to rescue a Holocron of
force sensitive younglings across the Galaxy so that Darth Vader could not get it. **Number 15. is the Guard Shoto or the Lightsaber Tonfa.**
This is not to be confused with a regular Lightsaber Shoto. The Lightsaber Tonfa was a unique weapon which
hard a perpendicular grip, and a second blade extruding at 90 degrees. Using this perpendicular handle, the saber
could be rapidly rotated, making it extremely effective at blocking blaster bolts and other
sabers. Although because of it’s complexity, it
was very dangerous to use, especially when one was untrained in it’s usage. In Canon we don’t know of anyone brave enough
to use it, but in Legends, Marriss Brood was a user of two Tonfas in the Force Unleashed. **After this is Number 16. The Lightsaber Pike.** This is the weapon
of the Jedi Temple guards, and was similar to the hinged double bladed lightsaber, but
they contained a shroud to protect it’s emitter. Other than that, they were usually yellow
in nature, but these lightsabers were passed down to every new temple guard, so they were
all very ancient… **Number 17. Crossguard Lightsabers.** Crossguard sabers
were pretty much regular sabers, except their hilts had a vent to allow excess energy out
through the sides. They were primarily created so that opponents
couldn’t slide their blade down the saber during blade locks, but they also turned into
a fashion piece during the Jedi’s most oppulent era, the High Republic. When a force user used a cracked saber to
craft his blade, making a crossguard was pretty much a must, because the excess energy had
to be released somewhere, or the blade would explode… This is why Kylo Ren has a crossguard. There were also variants that used a single
vent, but these were much rarer. **Number 18.** T**he Lightwhip.** Lightwhips
had similar hilts to regular lightsabers, but the blades they produces were extremely
flexible, and resembled a real whip. They were extremely long and instead of using
a single crystal, they contained multiple smaller crystals. Not to mention, they could also produce a
whip from both sides, making them incredibly hard to avoid, and literally impossible to
use for a non force user. In Canon, they were used by Padawans during
the high republic, including Vernestra Rwoh, who had a purple one. **Number 19. The Farkiller.** The Farkiller was very similar
to the lightsaber rifle, but had a much, much longer range, even able to hit a target 100
kilomtres away. This weapon was used by a Jedi Apostate named
Oo’ob, who was kicked out of the order in part for creating this weapon, which was considered
a dark act. **Number 20. The Dual Phase Lightsaber.** This lightsaber
is literally the same as a standard lightsaber, but had the ability to change it’s length
at will. This was used by Kanan Jarrus when teaching
Ezra Bridger, as well as notably Darth Vader, who used it in his fight against Luke Skywalker… This is also known as a VFX limitation being
explained in Canon… **Number 21. The Darksaber.** The Darksaber was the symbol
of Mandalorian leadership, and was created by the first ever Mandalorian accepted into
the Jedi Order. This was momentous because the Jedi Order
had been at war with the Mandalorians for centuries, but were able to put aside their
differences in the case of Tarre Vizsla. As a member of the Order, he crafted the Darksaber
as homage to his Mandalorian culture, but also his new found Family in the Jedi Order. After his death it was stored deep in the
Jedi archives, but was later stolen by Mandalorians of House Vizsla during the sacking of Coruscant. From then on, the person who held the Darksaber
was considered the head of House Vizsla and the leader of all Mandalore. It could only be passed by being won in a
traditional Mandalorian battle. Over time it passed through the hands of people
including Pre Vizsla, Darth Maul, Sabine Wren, Bo Katan Kryze, Moff Gideon and Din Djarin,
who is the current holder. **Number 22. The Shotosaber or Light Dagger.** The shoto
saber was pretty much just a standard lightsaber, execpet with a much smaller hilt and way shorter
blade. It was used by Jedi who wanted who use Jar
Kai and wield two blades, but didn’t want a full sized off-hand. It was also used by alien Jedi who were physically
smalled than humans and couldn’t wield a regular blade, like Master Yoda. Some force users however chose to use two
Shoto’s, making them extremely fast in close quarters combat, but also making them more
vulnerable from that close range. **Number 23. The Lightsaber Blaster.** This was the lightsaber
created by Ezra Bridger, and it combined a traditional Jedi Lightsaber, but turned it’s
hilt into a projectile thrower. He did this because he wasn’t confident
in his lightsaber combat skills, and wanted a backup option that he was more familliar
with. **Number 24. The Tagge Protoblade.** The tagge protoblade
was a unique plasma weapon created by Silas and Domina Tagge, the Sister of Cassio Tagge
from A New Hope. It functioned very similarly to a lightsaber
and when powered up, was able to cut through walls and enemies. It took the form of a gauntlet with a yellow
glow, and emanated energized plasma all around it. Despite this, it wasn’t actually powered
by a Kyber crystal and instead, was a pale immitation by a group of non force users. **Finally at Number 25, we have Exar Kun’s
Lightsaber.** Not much is known about this saber in Canon, but it was believed to be
a proto-double bladed saber, which inspired the modern double bladed sabers used by people
like Darth Maul. Hopefully this legendary weapon will be covered
more in Canon in the future. But those are all known lightsaber types in
the Current Canon. If you want to see what all the lightsaber
