Escaping Polygamy: Leaving the Order for Her 16 Children (Season 1) | Lifetime

Tonight, I'm meeting with my aunts, Kathy and Susan, to talk about Kathy's plan to escape. Susan already left the Order. Now I'm hoping that Kathy is ready to leave the Order. How long ago was it when you knew that you wanted to leave? A long time ago. A lot of years ago. You young girls, you're so lucky to get out before you have kids. I think the longer you're in there, the harder it is to get out. My name is Kathy Brown. I'm 53 years old. I was born and raised in the Kingston Group. I'm the first wife of Robbie Brown. We have 16 children together. In the Order, they teach you, have those babies every single year. You have as many as you can just as fast as you can so that the Kingstons can build their empire. My husband was 33 when he started courting the second wife. She was 12, and she was 14 when she married him. And it just made me sick because she was still a little girl. And I remember feeling the Lord must hate women to make them go through this, to live plural marriage, to live polygamy. My sister Susan and I are here to see our sister Shirley to let her know that I will be leaving polygamy. I'm glad to see you guys in Salt Lake. Shirley is my full sister. She's the seventh wife out of 14 that is married to Daniel Kingston. I've got something to tell you. I'm leaving Robbie, and I'm leaving the Order. I'm doing this for me and for my kids. I'm not going to allow Becky to grow up thinking that she has to marry some old man. So I think every woman who is living polygamy needs to get the hell out of there. Why do you stay? It has to be in my own time. Right. I understand that. That's the thing-- nobody can force you. As you can tell. Obviously. I'm allowing you guys to live your life's experience, to have your own life's experience. So you want us to allow you-- Allow me-- --to keep your girls in danger. --to handle this. We've allowed you to handle it for way too long, Shirley. You're not handling it. Ooh, was that a threat? You're not. What about your children? Do they have the right to be safe and from the teachings that are going to take them into plural marriage and abuse? You've got to keep it quiet. Don't tell anybody just yet just because-- Well, I-- I get that. I understand that. [music playing] Tomorrow's Kathy's escape. There's a bunch of Order homes in this whole area. Someone's home down here and they see the truck and they see that Kathy's leaving-- They'll block you off. Potentially. But the problem is, there is no cell phone service. The difference with this escape is there is no way for Shanell and Kollene to call the police or reach out for help. It can get scary really quick. [music playing] I really hope that there isn't anybody in the canyon that is going to see the U-Haul and start calling people. Oh, jeez. This is making me nervous. It's all secluded. [dogs barking] This is Order property, so the best thing for us to do is get in there, get her stuff, and get out as quickly as possible. OK, let's go. We're leaving. Becky, we can start taking boxes. She has a lot of stuff. There's no way we're going to be able to get everything. The guys got to get the freezer loaded, Seth. We don't have all day. Whoa! [dogs barking] [music playing] Mom! Kathy, someone from the Order is watching us. Oh! We need to go now. This is very bad. Run and go get in the van and buckle up. Hurry! Where's Becky? Go get in. Becky's right behind you. OK, come on. Let's go. We should go. This is the start of a whole new life for Kathy. And a much better life, too. What's going to be the biggest struggle is getting rid of Robbie. He doesn't care about anybody else. It's about getting Becky married off.
