My name is Mattie. I'm 22 years old, and I'm from the FLDS group. My father has two wives. My mother is his first wife. She has seven children. His second wife has five children, so total of 12. I'm the second child of my father's, and I'm the oldest daughter. The religion is quite strict. It has principles and doctrines that they expect you to live up to. In Father's home, we didn't wear makeup. We didn't wear high heels. We didn't cut our hair. And I did, as soon as I was old enough and I could get my hands on peroxide, I bleached my hair. [ Laughs ] I am kind of a rebel. I like to do what I want to do. I wasn't bad. I was just a little crazy. [ Chuckles ] My father, he didn't like the type of music I enjoyed listening to. I like listening to classic rock, country. He didn't want me to watch Disney movies. I would have poetry and books. Father was very -- He was strict about the rules in his house, and you obeyed those rules. Mother wasn't as strict as Father, so Mother would cover our backs. My mom lived in Colorado City until about two years ago, when she was sent away to repent. Father sent her away to repent for hiding things behind his back about me. ♪♪ When Mother was sent away, I felt a lot like it was my fault, because I had taught her to lie. I told her you don't have to tell the whole story, and I got her in trouble a lot. I wasn't angry. I wasn't upset. I was sad. I was sad that I put her in that place. A year after my mother was sent out to repent, I was sent to live with my mom about two hours away from Colorado City. So basically, Father sent me to repent with my mother. My father does show up unexpectedly and check on us, check if I have movies and stuff. If he sees some, he'll talk to me, but you can't just change your personality, who you are, to please somebody. You gotta be yourself and let them either love you for who you are or hate you for who you are. It's just you and your mom, in the house that you're living in right now. Yes. She'll be gone to work during most of the day, so she won't be there while we're packing up my stuff, but she'll get off work around 5:00 and I want her to come home right when we're about to leave, so I can personally say bye to her. So do you think she's gonna tell your father? ♪♪
