are you excited? I'm so excited. I've never done anything
to my hair. Like, I've never
gone to a salon. I'm nervous. I can get why this would be
such a big deal for you, too, because for you,
you had so many rules on how you had
to keep your hair. And now, like,
you are, like, going against
all your core beliefs you were raised with
right now. That's so empowering. Oh, it feels awesome.
It really does. It -- It feels like
I'm just in a dream. I never expected to be
where I am right here. Yesterday, I woke up
as a girl still in the FLDS, sand today, I couldn't
feel better about my life and where I'm going. I just -- I want to fit in
with the outside world, yet, I want to be myself. I want to be me,
and this isn't me. Hairdresser: You can have
a seat right here. I'm just gonna let you relax
under here for about 15 minutes. You look so cute. Ah, I feel so cute! To make you feel like
it's not so weird, I'll just do it with you.
Oh, gosh. Do you feel like
you're finally taking, like -- this is<i> your</i> life now? Yeah. I feel like I'm taking
my life back, you know? I'm -- I'm being me. I'm being who

I'm just excited for Maryann because she's taking
these baby steps, but to her,
they're huge steps. Like, to someone out here
in the world, it's like, "Oh, it's just dying your hair."
But to her, this is a big step. For so long,
the FLDS has been saying, "No, no, no.
This is who you need to be. You need to be, you know,
a servant of God." But honestly, what's so wrong
with dying your hair? Really?
At the end of your life, you're gonna be up at the gates,
in heaven, and God's gonna say, "Oh, sorry, you can't come in
because you dyed your hair"? It just doesn't
make sense. Hairdresser: Are you ready
to cut it off? -Let's do this!
-Okay. Maryann: Oh, my gosh. There's no going back
after this. Nope. What do you think if, like,
people from the group saw you? They'd be like,
"She just fell into the ways of the world so fast." Are you ready for
the full picture? I'm excited!
Yes! [ Chuckles ] Oh, my gosh! Is it everything
you've imagined? Oh, my gosh.

I am loving it. Have you ever imagined yourself
to look like this? No! I'm just loving it. Like, I can't quit flipping my

around here, too. Look at all this. Oh, my gosh. So pretty. This is totally me! This is me. I could not wait
to get out of my dress and do something
with my hair. And it just turned out
so awesome. I'm just... I'm loving this. I'm happy. Oh, my gosh!
