give me some air it was almost too easy nick [Music] there's two things that we can count on and when we work together as strong as we can be working together we'll be friends forever oh dark hundred early why are we up this early i knew that had to be a dream that was cool though i know why we're up this early because some wise guy said the only thing that would make this channel cooler is if we rescued a steam engine and i'm thinking that he probably had in mind a locomotive [Music] but you know since we seem to be in the business of uh rescuing shovels it got some fellers to thinking maybe we should rescue a steam shovel so we're stepping up our game and our shovel rescues here nick talk about this thing oh man early 1920s maybe late teens they only made them up like 1926. uh eerie type b steam shovel um it's actually set up as a crane so it's got the front drum so you could run it as a crane a clamshell or a drag line and the boom lays over here in the weeds um it was last used in like 1959 or 1960 to build a bridge near forest port new york and they just use it as a steam power unit a portable boiler to run a pile driver so uh we've done a little bit of work on it here already kip's up there trying to put a little bit of lubrication in the cylinders so we can try to turn it on air and we got a couple levers here to free up yet and then obviously it's uh buried quite deep in the mud and and the trees actually growing up in the back and we've got a little bit more cutting to do on that so uh pretty interesting so far we've got a selection of compressors and we'll see what we can do so the end goal again is to try to track this thing out on air under its own power this is one day we're nine o'clock on a sunday morning and we're gonna try to uh get it dug out and drive out today in a single day so that we can uh get it ready to go on a trailer there you have it so here we go nick's firing up some torches and start working on freeing up these levers and see what we can do so [Music] anytime today chip we're getting ready to pour iron here oh just like mcdonald's i'm loving it i'm going to try to put a little pressure on that there taylor [Music] if we're going to need more pressure [Music] oh it's moving it's moving [Music] not yet there's too much flame come on holy cow it's not a rescue unless somebody gets set on fire violation how long it took me arm hair that was from last night we already had one casualty last night so look at that huh proper placement the lubrication of pb blaster do we need to heat that or no yep that's that's the other i've been doing that much i'm gonna get some house lubricator out here and show you guys how it's known oh no tv is worth that oh god oh this feels like lung cancer on a sunday morning there we go oh somebody pulled a dollar bill to keep me motivated well we got the levers all free uh we've soaked the crap out of the cylinders on this thing and nick's uh successfully bar in this engine over so we'll roll it through a few times with the bar and uh make sure we got everything rolling freely and then the plan is to uh take his uh that's a model a air compressor right yep smith model a compressor 60 cfm we'll see what it'll do yeah we made some fittings and we're going to put air to it and see if we can roll this thing over on air what year is this uh smith compressor nick well i don't really know it's actually a model b the gordon smith company out of bowling green um kentucky i believe not ohio actually used model a originally and then in later years model b and this is one of the last they made up until like 1953 and the early ones are actually made out of a model a ford cowl dash and everything but it's a model b ford engine so they were made from like 1932-34 it's got the fuel pump connection which is unused um it's got a model a distributor so it doesn't have the b centrifugal advance and otherwise it's it's a model a and then it's got the cylinder head where the outer two cylinders can run the engine have spark plug and are connected to the distributor the center two cylinders compress air it's got an automatic unloader it idles down on its own pretty neat little system so we'll fire it up still on six volt and i just actually fixed a rust hole in the oil pan so hopefully that doesn't open up today [Music] all right here we go moment of truth [Music] it was almost too easy nick [Music] [Laughter] oh it's a beautiful thing [Music] so so i haven't figured out what that cooking is yet but probably use some fresh babbitt oh we're slowly nipping away at this tree here um got some more saw work to do the thing is really in there good we're trying to avoid cutting the tree down until after we get the shovel out so we don't want to drop any of the chunks of the tree on the roof so once we get the shovel out of here then we'll get the rest of the tree taken down oh [Laughter] so oh it's taking a pipe with it oh is it growing around a pipe yeah pipe or a rod sticking out there yeah just taking it with it it's a valvoline palladium because it was cheapest at napa greasing up the swing engines try liking here a little bit for the mains anyway see if we can possibly swing it out of the tree i haven't even opened the valve here so we'll see what uh what happens when we put air to the swing engine but [Music] good thing we didn't get too aggressive we were going through the water pipe oh it don't matter that's the suction line for filling it from a tank and wait yeah some of that up in there you know you see what i mean i can't open the slider here but you got the message now we got 370 cfm we're gonna try to put to her here and see what this does oh he's leaking pretty good yep that's trying you're completely free in the trees [Music] so oh we got the boiler stoked up and uh she's smoking away here we're making some steam priests no no i'm just kidding we got a small brush fire going in the top of it here shouldn't be able to spread anywhere so it's just a bunch of leaves figure we'll just let her burn out that would not be the most private place for a bathroom break [Music] so here [Music] how are we doing little car horn for the shovel it's our archaeological find for the day is it a steam porn [Music] just want to make sure that everybody sees that we're greasing it we got the old 1920s wing type grease fittings that i only have a coupler for so uh we're removing them temporarily yep yeah she taken it is this one and the back one there excellent i don't even know how the rollers are lubricated but i don't know if those are pipe plugs or what they are [Music] so it doesn't seem like there's any reason this thing won't track out now you're you'll find a reason trust me you get on the levers and it'll be 10 foot underground in five minutes i don't know what happened here she's on backhoe pattern your controls are backwards you're missing a stick this ain't no case yeah let's get some real grease in there she'll see what that feels like see what i oh oh my god he's already coming apart here well he ain't gonna go nothing in the bearing there that's all right what's the matter it's all loose the bearings wore out can't do anything with it now i used to got some babbitt left in there be all right every one of these is some poor bastard with an air hammer knocking the foundry sand off these castings think about that shittiest job in a foundry in the shakeout room you know 100 years ago he probably was making good two to three cents an hour what what you're going through what's going in there see it coming oh yeah so what are we doing i'm gonna try some error tour and you're [Music] tour [Music] uh [Music] come here yeah sort of wiggling give her a little tug with the excavator where do you want us to hook i'd rather hook in the lower frame through that hole [Music] [Music] uh [Music] so [Music] so we're getting some blow-by on the rods so you're just tightening up to seal up on the packings a bit i'm gonna try on this one the others mostly hey ready oh [Music] [Music] do [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so so we're gonna try to uncover the cereal plate here and just get the number see if we can uh take that home determine what year this thing is it's buried under here somewhere right oh we hope so see what we got here like four inches of dirt oh man that looks official right there oh yeah oh big nails big cotter pins file somebody's file oh yeah it's good stuff there cause all this block of wood shiv a couple bolts here throw in the collection pot oh now that looks specific that's pretty interesting caught with an acetylene torch there's got to be a reason for that water pipe ratcheting device oh man all right oh there you go i found your file you lost 70 years ago austin oh oh big wrench oh yeah look at that huh i like the addition to it man well that's an original bucyrus rent or erie wrench got the y on it that's cool look at that with a torque amplifier extension oh yeah something something oh yeah that's a big wrench for something rather [Music] there she is so need some uh archaeological brushes something [Music] number 2440. [Music] [Music] number two four four zero pretty cool i can clean off the two four four zero [Music] there's some stuff written at the ends here but i don't know what they are maybe patent dates or something or danger do not operate this shovel on compressed air under no circumstances we blew it [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] running on her own right here [Music] got a small coal fire going here from the 75 year old pole that was sitting in the bunker it's clearly still volatile antique coal can't wait to see the comments that it gets [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] you
