welcome back to our adventures in the yukon soar up in dawson city and we heard these rumors of this pilot that flew was flying over the bush about 20 years ago and he's seen this kind of a shiny thing down there and he wondered what it was i snowshoot in there and found this steam shovel it was supposed to been complete park back in the 1800's all the tools and everything in there was supposed to be in perfect conditions so we took the drone we flew around the area where we the rumor was that it was sitting and we actually lo and behold we found this thing so this is the coolest thing by far that we've ever found abandoned in the bush there and we're going to take you on the journey to go and check this thing out most of it's probably mental you don't like dark places that are wet and uh your close to four brick you have a bunch of phobias and stuff but it's not gonna be the place for you all right so ben sherry and i were taking off on our quest to find this uh shovel yeah the long lost moose this is the nice thin stuff this is the easiest part we're in some big timber and we just checked our uh our coordinates here so we're doing fine it's just when you get in here it's hard to know what direction you're going but uh with the what the ipad says we're still going in the right direction so you can hear the creek and we'll probably just have to get up on the other side and then we're going to get into a big burn so the first obstacle to find this steam shovel was a river and we didn't think it was that wide but we only had 100 feet of rope and we didn't have enough rope to get across it so we had to fly the drone up and find a network place and we jumped across these islands and it was a big help with the drone and so we'll get back on the ground we'll show you how we got across the river which is pretty exciting is the river that we have to try and cross to get to where we're going we'll have enough rope to the island then who knows what's on the other side of the island we've done so far has actually uh split it in thirds i'd say so it probably successfully over a third of it so we still got two thirds to worry about right about here looks pretty good to me yeah all right so uh we're going to attempt this river crossing sure things are going to go for a swim but yep i tell her oh no i'm better than she thinks but we'll see who's we'll see who's laughing at the end of the day uh pretty swift but hopefully go across the rope and put a rope all the way across oh yeah and i think it's gonna get deeper also pretty tough oh yeah much much deeper in these oh yeah yeah how bad hey yeah i don't know do you want to come over or not no you okay if we go ahead okay i can bring stuff over for you boom we have my coats there right yeah okay you okay you can do it if you want but it's kind of tough though okay we'll try to go as fast as we can we made it we're feeling sorry for sharon you know we thought well we didn't want to [ __ ] leave her too long but on the other hand she'd be pretty disappointed that she waited all that time for nothing oh it's on tracks wow awesome look at this shovel on it beautiful shape there's a winch the tools are still here that's what we heard this beautiful box here tin box look at that cylinder oil perfect shape look at that teapot this is steamboat steam operated too so steam operators loki i'm gonna grab out for sharon have fun yeah oh hi yeah she's got one that's i'm probably gonna bring this box too i think that's the way steam boiler steam operated loki everything's still here wow there's the shovel for it 1890 wow where does it set up automatic shovel pumpkin i bet you this thing's rare as rare can be automatic shovel comes in a few buttons patented by a through bar through september 20 1980 december 4th 1990. [Music] made by the thu automatic shovel company lauren zero it says patented by r through september 23rd 1890 december 4th 1894 november 2nd 1897. it's 100 years old and all the roof is still good that's where the operator would have sat right there this is by far the coolest thing that we've ever come across and maybe one of the oldest things that is a skookum machine very well made awesome yeah that's pretty neat yeah we're going to jump up on top show you anything else we can after this long walk thanks to the drone there's the top of the boom we're standing up on here oh it's cracked there's two cracks in the frame on both sides the channel is cracked the channel is busted right cracked right through yeah well made out of wood this part think it'd be safe to walk on the roof i don't know it's not that far to fall let's see if i can look down the boiler but better not go any further you know they could drag this out of here it wouldn't be that hard eh if they got a cat in here in the wintertime through the musk egg it's on wheels not very many people know this is here it's kind of a legend that we chased down there's a well that's a wrench all right i don't know what else we can show you here you know that's the top of the boiler the water tank that filled the water tank there there's some more odds and ends up here little tools oh just some gasket material a little bit not much i don't know what well you got the crown jewel of the the souvenirs the whistle i think probably the way they got here is he just had a bunch of horses and teams and stuff and they just laid track down and just keep pulling the track along huh there's two of those plates are really neat we're not going to take the plates [Music] now it was propelled a big chain drive in it there's a shovel here it's rusted in there way up in the yukon in the musk nobody knows about it long forgotten this is both for the most perfectly preserved artifact machine that we've ever seen never seen anything even remotely close to this yeah this is like a parking brake here it's like a clamp right yeah that held onto it had it parked there it propelled so they had to have more traffic on here yeah they just secured it here so they were there where it was going to roll or something right so this what is this what happened i'll bet you anything they brought here in the middle of winter time it was all muskeg they brought it in here they set it here and then in the summertime they're going to start digging because they're at the bottom of this uh this gravel bar here and they never did anything with it much for some reason look at this wood this is amazing so this is back from this thing was built back in the 1800s over 120 years old and look at that you know just in perfect shape really i don't see it's not rotted or anything and even the roof is pretty good so but you know it's cold here for a long time you know there'll be a lot of rain normally and it's dry but yeah this is probably the most awesome and i think like this not gonna be a big job for a company or whatever that had a big cat just to um go through the muskeg and make a trail and pull this thing right out i think he could roll it right out on the take the chains off there and roll it right on those boogies i think you know a nine or something like that pull it like nothing eh if you just had a good road and there was frozen good and solid it would just roll right over the road it wouldn't be a problem well there's another shot of her all right so we're starting a long trip back home now wish me luck hopefully i don't go for a swim if i do i'm just going to hold onto the rope and float myself across so far so good lots of water here yeah like he's not having an easy time getting back this is another crane that we found in our travels uh it's a little different um it basically it doesn't it's not through shovel i'm not sure what make it is it's electric uh crane which is kind of interesting the other one was steam powered one and uh and this one just has a it's like a drag bucket that just goes from the top and it goes right down and pulls it towards it to fill it up so uh this one is is actually on a pretty uh popular road so lots of people went to it and you know they've taken some of the stuff off at the sidings going on but so this is what these cranes do see this big ditch it digs this great big ditch what they do is they'll divert the creek we'll show you where the diversion is and then these cranes uh just dug this big huge ditch and i bring water right to uh to dawson where there's a powerhouse to generate electricity to run the dredges and different things they use back in the yukon so um you know this is uh probably close to around 100 years old they've dug this here and yeah so we'll show you the the diversion and and the real cold water we found this is a north kondak river so they had an old uh a dam here and a bridge and what they did is they diverted this whole river or part of it down this channel they dug with these old electric steam shovels to bring water into uh dawson for hydraulic you know for power generation i guess and these are the gates that they have with the screws where they open the water a whole bunch of gates give more water or less i guess it's all kind of falling apart and this is the channel big long channel they done and we'll show you the boiler was right behind the crane and it's actually interesting boiler it's on the skids so uh they basically dragged it along with them and uh and then it would have had uh would have used the steam to generate electricity uh for the crane so um so in a way i guess it's wood fire um so it was kind of an interesting setup they made electricity and that's how they run this electric crane see two big electric motors that run the crane it didn't have diesel engine a lot of it's wood the construction of the cab is all wood big turntable for it so they probably use steam to generate electricity maybe or they have power lines running everywhere oh that's a pretty cool crane big heavy pads look how heavy the pads are on let me get up on top of the room board here if you're not gonna break on us boom going up winches this is the back end where the motor is big electric motor a bunch of electric motors i don't know if they had some real stats here pretty big electric motors [Music] operator i guess what is up here somewhere else sure on the other side yeah no daughter operator would have sat on the other side yep that was operator station right there don't know if we'd had a seat or not i guess so probably there's quite a few of these around the yukon [Applause] this one's kind of a more of a public area so some of the stuff is off of it other ones are more complete [Applause] this is the easiest one to get to [Applause] does this have a name like what is it um it's electric crane yeah i don't know what else you'd call it but with this crane would have dug this great big channel just would have went along here sideways and it would have just dug the channel out of here and put the dirt up on the flat spot and i kept working along [Applause] with the sprockets are on the outside on the newer machines it's on the inside but i'm not sure how it all worked somehow it worked well that was to slide in out of gear i don't know how the drive worked though yeah yeah see the fairleads got a lot of wear on it it would have been that size and slick bell shaped now yeah a little haul back for the for the bucket it's riveted too so the boom is all riveted it's all yeah like that project was like 19 early 1900s so yeah i think it's probably completed in 1911 this crane would have had like one of those buckets you see around all the time a drag line bucket so it uh this basically drops it into the ground that you're wanting to dig and then it hauls it back and then it fills it up there you go i knew you could make it yeah it's pretty high still doesn't look too high from here that looks pretty high from here so is it shaking now jump up down let's oh see does move a little bit it does i'm telling you i see the back the back of the of the cranes lifting up off the ground [Laughter] [Music] i'm wondering what this is really have no idea you look on like a jib of a crane or something but let's see if we can have a look here some kind of a big electric motor here i don't know what it did you got me i don't see a winch or nothing on here all bolted together and then the big pulley at the end your guess is as good as mine as to what this would have been [Music] you
