retreat registration is open now on the church center app so make sure to save your spot today here is pam bundy with one small thought as she looks to the theme of the retreat the lord's prayer my name is pam bundy and i've been asked to share something from the verse from matthew 6 11 for um for retreat so i want to share two life lessons is how i like to call them the verse matthew 6 11 says give us this day our daily bread you know when i grew up as a child i don't think i ever thought when i sat down to dinner whether there be food on the table i never thought i might not have a lunch box it never entered my mind although i heard that there were people starving in the world but i never really experienced it and then in 2014 god took me to uganda and i learned a lot of life lessons there and one of the things that happened at the very beginning of the trip was i went to the guest house which was where the amani choir was staying they were preparing to come to the united states for a choir tour and i was asked to lead them in a devotional but before i did they actually were having a time of prayer and when i listened to those children pray and i listened to them thanking god for the food they gave he gave them on that day that he would give them on that day when i heard them thank him for waking them up this morning that they were alive on this day something radically changed in my heart and i remember the story of god feeding the children in the wilderness giving them manna and he specifically gave it to them every day to gather what they needed for that day i really feel that it's a part of god's heart for us to learn total dependence on him that we we don't have anything that he hasn't given us that he hasn't provided we get stuck in our world and we just um assume there's going to be money in the bank or in our pocket and we can buy what we need we have refrigerators to save food and freezers to safe food you know in a country like uganda most people don't have electricity and they're a cash society they work they get paid in cash and they use that cash that day to buy the food for that day so they understand this verse very differently than we do and i really believe it was god wanting his disciples and us to learn to be dependent on him for every single thing more information on the weekend can be found under events on the church center app may the lord bless you and keep you this fine sunday and until next time we will see you on the church center app good morning everyone would you stand with us and sing to the king of kings and the lord of lords [Music] saturday was silent surely it was through since when it's impossible to do [Music] friday's disappointment sunday's empty tomb since when is [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] this is the phrase make a dead man walk again open the grave i'm coming out i'm gonna live gonna live again this is the sound of dry bones [Music] rattling something new you're not gonna run out of miracles anytime soon [Music] gonna live again this is the sound of traveling my god is able to save and deliver and heal and restore anything that he wants to to sing that to gain as a declaration as a reminder as a testimony to one another what god can do [Music] but my god is able to save and deliver and heal and restore anything that he wants to that's right just ask the man who was thrown on the bones of elijah if there's anything that he can't do [Music] when god says to move [Music] this is [Music] is [Music] [Music] this is the sound of the driver [Music] the glory of the lord rise among us the glory of the lord [Music] [Music] [Music] let it rise [Music] i'll let it rise [Applause] let the praise of god's people rise [Music] sing it again let the glory of the lord [Music] rise among us let it rise [Music] let it rise [Music] we give you praise lord [Music] all right let's take it up a key shall we here we go [Applause] [Music] let the songs of the lord sing [Music] [Music] rise among us let it rise [Music] we give you praise [Music] [Applause] one last time [Music] [Music] amen go ahead and have a seat well good morning everyone uh today is a solemn occasion the official installment of the new senior pastor of this church and and as you know i'm a very very serious person so let's all get ourselves in the right frame of mind here can i invite the schumachers to come up here please just considering the words of the apostle paul here as you folks transition from southern california to northern california there's going to be some things required of you first first corinthians 9 22 and 23 i have become all things to all people so that by all possible means i might save some i do all this for the sake of the gospel that it may share in its blessings also first corinthians 13 11 which i've looked into the greek and i think there was some meaning there that we might have missed before when i was a southern californian i talked like a southern californian i thought like a southern californian i reasoned like a southern californian when i became in northern california i put the ways of southern california behind me so may you truly become a part of this community we welcome you to northern california and we're just going to help you get underway here pastor jordan tonya julia justice and jude now you kids can probably trade and mix and match if you want to all right but you've all got your very own giants hats now and and even though you don't feel like wearing them we're gonna need you to okay after the service out on the patio we're gonna have a little welcome reception for the schumachers if you'd like to stop by and say hi so uh let's pray for this family as we get underway lord may the schumachers just enjoy all that has happened in the last several months may they be freed from expectation may they be freed from any sort of obligation to be anything other than just a part of this church we welcome them here we love them and may they feel your joy in this journey in jesus name amen let's hear it folks [Applause] even though i walk through the valley of the shadow of death your perfect love is casting out fear would you stand with us and even when i'm caught in the middle of the storms of this life i won't turn back i know [Music] me shall i fear whom and shall i fear [Music] [Music] that's right and i could see a light that is coming for the heart that holds on a glorious life beyond all compare [Music] and there will be no end to the troubles but until that day comes we'll live to know you here on the earth [Music] [Music] if my god is [Music] [Music] you never let [Music] through the storm [Music] you never let go [Music] let's just sing that one more time just raise our voices and oh no you never let go through the coming through the storm oh no you never let go every [Music] let's read together psalm 27 verse 1 the lord is my light and my salvation whom shall i fear the lord is the stronghold of my life and whom shall i be afraid in the quiet in the stillness i know that you are gone in the secret of your presence i know there i am restored [Music] each new [Music] there is no one else for me none but [Music] crucified to set me free now i live to bring praise [Music] in the chaos in confusion [Music] you give me grace to do your will and when you call our world [Music] there is no one else for me [Music] number jesus crucified [Music] [Applause] free now i live to bring grace [Music] when you call and when you call [Music] each new day again [Music] there is no one now [Music] but jesus [Music] there [Music] crucified to save [Music] now i live to bring just bow our hearts in prayer heavenly father that song sings now i live to bring you praise and that is the heart this morning that we want to have however we come in these doors this morning filled with life or filled with sorrow lord jesus said we would lay it at the foot of the cross the cross where you were crucified the cross where you were brought down and put in a grave a grave that you came out of and had victory over it is at that cross lord jesus that we lay down all the that plagues our heart that hurts our heart it's there we lay down all the things that we bring joy and fill us with life and we say we want to praise you with both so lord jesus help us to find the place inside who we are this morning to do just that that we would be able to fix our eyes on you in this moment and as we live to bring you praise lord jesus that your hope would abound that your joy would abound that it would fill our our minds and our hearts and it wouldn't make sense why we why we find hope and why we find joy in this moment but we do because it comes from you so that is our desire we want to answer your call it's in jesus name we pray and everyone said amen amen have a seat well good morning life house oh it's so good to be with you you know in the interview process i was not made aware that i had to transfer loyalties to my baseball team is that did that come with the position i didn't realize that you know i'm a lifelong baseball fan but my my team of growing up is the houston astros but you know what i'll take one for the team i'll i'll go ahead i will go ahead and support uh the san francisco giants as well you know our family is so excited to be here and i just want to start out by saying a big thank you big thank you from the bottom of our hearts um we're full we just feel full spiritually full uh relationally connected encouraged to start this new journey uh that that we're entering in and uh i want to say a special thank you to all of you who have signed up for the meal train who have donated your time your talent who have helped construction projects and to move things around in my office and uh your gifts and your notes and the emails and the encouragements thank you it just helps us feel part of the family and that's what we feel so thank you uh church family we are entering into this new season not only of our own ministry but but also in the calendar year we're kind of entering in to the fall and it is a wonderful time to start a new series as we gear up for the fall and that's what we're going to be doing we're going to be journeying over the next few months all the way up until thanksgiving in this series on the book of ephesians and the title is called filled full filled full now thanksgiving and filled full those go together right and you know as you think about the fall it honestly is probably one of my favorite times of year uh amen partly because uh it's birthday time it's celebration time in fact my birthday is tomorrow september 13th and then tonya's comes uh very closely after on october 1st and so it's the season of celebration and then we go into the holidays all through october in november and december and you know it's just a joyous time in fact it's filled with the four f's and these things i think are fundamental to life the first is food and then you got festivities and then fellowship all the gatherings then lastly football which is probably my favorite and i love all of those things and so we're going to be journeying through ephesians and in this season of fullness and that's what the message of this book is all about this is about being full now being relationally full or physically full is great but what's even better is being spiritually full amen and so ephesians is going to tell us a lot about that let me start out by giving us some background on this book so whether you've committed the whole book to memory or this is the first time that you're reading it we're all going to be starting off on the same uh level here a little background first it was written by the apostle paul now you know paul some of you you've known that he was actually a persecutor of the church but god got a hold of him changed his life radically and he became a pioneer a church planter and he planted hundreds of churches house churches these congregations all throughout the mediterranean rim and the most prolific of the church planters in the first century and so the apostle paul this guy is the one who writes this book and so in paul it took three main missionary journeys and on two of them he stops in this town of ephesus and now this is a major city setter an important city in the first century and so it is written by paul two churches in and around ephesus now paul when he had planted the church um fast forward a few years and he goes to jerusalem he's arrested for testifying to his faith and then he gets uh he calls on caesar and he goes to rome and then he is on trial but as he's waiting he's in prison and it's in prison that he writes several of these books of the bible it's a good thing he got in prison why because we got scripture and he's writing to these churches to encourage them in their faith and what's interesting is ephesians is one of the least situational of all paul's letters it's more of kind of a high level theological theologically rich document but it was delivered as told at the end of the uh passage or at the end of the book it tells us who delivered this letter to ephesus and it it's this guy um onesimus as well as tight chicas no don't name your kids that right onesimus and taichikas right these are not names that are common today but those are the two that take this letter to ephesus and uh it's what circulates so as i mentioned it's written as a church manifesto and basically it's the marching orders of us as christians who we are in christ and then how we are to live for christ in a fallen world and so as i said ephesus was this important city center and it was very rich and wealthy because it was part of the roman road but it also housed the temple to diana or artemis and so a major portion of this city was tied up in the temple cult which is this worship of an idol and they believed that this idol had dropped down from heaven and even though it was made by humans um and they worship and they bring money and and there's even rituals and really sinful rituals you know temple prostitutes and paul is writing to greeks romans pagans who have now heard the message of hope in the gospel and they've been converted and now he's teaching them training them how we live this life and so we can relate in our society today right a lot of these same things are still going on worship of idols engaging in all kinds of evil activities and so the structure of the book is really really easy to grasp it's two main sections the first is it's six chapters and it's broken into two sections the first three chapters are theological theologically rich and then the second two chapters or the second group of chapters four through six are very practical so i want you to think about this discipleship paul writes in a way in his letters where he is kind of teaching us about how we should live our lives and the first is thinking rightly about god and about ourselves about who we are in christ and then it's meant to flow into our heart and then ultimately it ends up flowing out of our hands and so beliefs are backed by behaviors but actually started through it going to our heart and then out our hands it's a wonderful picture of what discipleship is and so when you read the apostle paul's letters that's what he's doing he's given us the theologically rich material and it's meant to train our minds to think about god and see the world in a different way and then it impacts our heart and ultimately our behaviors and so the uh three main themes that we're going to find recurring in this book are christ's sufficiency the church's identity our unity and our variety and then also the christian's ability and responsibility to live for jesus you know christ's sufficiency in uh salvation it's all due to him and it's all for him and we're going to see that time and time again in this letter then we're also going to discover it is a great grace that we have been given in jesus to be part of his family and paul uses several images one of a body and also a building and then a bride different images to describe how we're linked together how we are joined together in the body then lastly the christian's ability and responsibility to live for jesus and so we are empowered by the holy spirit in order to live for him and so the uh the title of this message today we're going to start out at the first in chapter 1 verses 1 through 14 and so it's a healthy section of scripture so you're going to have to buckle up a bit we're going to be going into some rich material here but the title of the message is what's so good about the good news man i don't know about you but for me i could use some good news in my life amen man it seems like you you flip on the television and the news it just has this way of bringing discouragement division uh you know disruption to our lives man it seems like in the south there is hurricanes and in the east there is flooding in the north there is storms of bruin and in the west there is fires and that's just meteorologically right think about politically there's division in our land yesterday we celebrated the 20th anniversary of 9 11 a day that marked a very historic and destructive heartache on our land and it reminds us of the division not just here politically in the united states and with the recall vote and the distrust that we have to leaders but also internationally the division that we find ourselves in the midst of and what god wants to speak to you and i today is there is unity and there is hope in jesus it's possible to live at peace because of him and what he's done for us and so that's what we're going to discover as we go through this passage we'll be reminded and encourage that today and so we're going to start in verse 1 all the way through 14 in ephesians you can open up to that it's up here on the screen it says paul an apostle of christ jesus by the will of god to god's holy people in ephesus the faithful in christ jesus grace and peace to you from god our father in the lord jesus christ praise be to the god and father of our lord jesus christ who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with say a church with what every spiritual blessing in christ for he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight in love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through jesus christ and it's in accordance with his pleasure and will to the praise of his glorious grace which he freely given us in the one he loves in him we have redemption through his blood the forgiveness of sins in accordance with the riches of god's grace that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure and he purposed it in christ to be put into effect when the times reach their fulfillment and here's the purpose to bring unity to all things in heaven and under earth unto christ in him we were also chosen having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything into conformity with the purpose of his will god's in charge in him in order that we who were the first to put our hope in christ might be for the praise of his glory and you were also included in christ when you heard the message of truth the gospel of your salvation when you believed you were marked in him with a seal it's the promised holy spirit he is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are god's possession to the praise of his glory so heavenly father i pray that you would teach us through your word today by your spirit what is so good about the good news and it's you teach us that today we pray in jesus name amen amen well you know paul writes a lot of words in this opening section and in fact when you read it in the greek it is one sentence from verse 3 all the way to 14. how many english teachers do we have here you know you're not training your kids to do you know a 11 verse sentence but that's what paul does here and what he's doing is he's just showing us all these different ways that god god the father god the son god the spirit has blessed us with his goodness and it's changed our destiny and our world forever and so here's the big idea don't get lost in all the minutia the big idea is this by believing in jesus we belong to god and as part of his royal family god richly fills our lives full of good gifts everything that belonged to jesus as god's son now belongs to us now i want you to wrap your mind around that everything it's the divine second person of the trinity first in line to inheritance everything that belonged to him is now yours and mine in christ not because of anything you've done but because god's that good and so he says praise be to the god and father of our lord jesus christ because he's blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in christ and that's what we're going to talk about what are those goods what are those life-altering shattering earth-breaking things that god has done that are good for us and we're going to talk about three biggies in this so these are the goods of the good news the first is that god is our father god is our father man it'd be nice to have jeff bezos as your daddy wouldn't it you'd be kind of in line just a little bit of that wealth it just seems like he keeps on getting bit richer doesn't he try having the author of life and the god of the universe the owner of everything as your father he chose us from the very beginning now the idea of predestination or election it causes a lot of people a little bit of difficulty as you think about god even before any of this came to being had a plan a purpose in his mind and that he ensures everything operates according to that plan and purpose and that you in of yourself can bring no goodness to god you are dead in your transgressions by our own willfulness and by inheriting a sin nature from those who came before us and yet that is exactly what this scripture says for he chose us in him in jesus before the creation of the world then he goes on and verse 11 says in him we were also chosen having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything into conformity with the purpose of his will god chose us and do you know why that's so incredibly encouraging to me it means that god chose me not because i was good enough not because i had anything good in myself not because my had enough faith or i had enough duty done to be blessed by him but because he loved me and guess who gets the praise then when we think about salvation if i was the one who did it then i was rightfully be praised and i'm pretty good i saved myself no no we have nothing good to bring to god it's by his grace and he plans everything according and his will is going to be done and he's going to see that his children are a part of his family forever now i have a sister-in-law her name is alicia and she's an identical twin to to tonya but in many ways it couldn't be more different but i just i i she's a special girl and tony and i really enjoy one of the ministries that she's engaged in she's a foster mama and so she uh ministers to a lot of these children who are coming from very difficult family backgrounds and she is this spot where a safe place safe harbor and so she's on her 14th and 15th foster kids uh currently and she she bathes them she changes their diapers she uh cares for them in their time of need and you know what what i think her her most uh joyous time is and she loves the actual serving part but her most joyous time is when she hands that little baby over cared for but given to their forever home the adoptive parents those who are going to shepherd her and lead her and are thankful for her him or and raise that baby and see that nothing bad happens to them that is the adoptive parents mission and goal and that is what we've received in our heavenly father see we were in a time of desperate need and he took us from a situation of desperation and he transferred us into his household his family and he treats us as part of his forever family and you know there's a whole lot of benefits from being a part of god's family but this is how paul says it says in love he predestines us for adoption to sonship and it's the praise of his glorious grace and he gave it to us freely and he gave us in the one that he loves who is jesus and so jesus is that way but god adopts us through him into his forever family and when you are a part of god's family uh it's a great thing you know i love the slogan of uh olive garden olive garden it says something you know it used to be when you're when you're here your family you guys kind of remember that or or it says uh you know we're all family here and what they mean is uh when you go into that restaurant you get treated like family so you got like endless breadsticks wonderfully fresh salad you got all you can eat pastas uh it's just a banquet anyone else getting hungry can you light but i really uh envision in god's family think about eating at the banquet table for all eternity of god you know uh an image that comes to mind is of the prodigal son you know when he does his best to kind of go live his life in uh fertility he comes to the end of his ropes and the scripture says he comes to his senses it's when god got a hold of him he turned around and he went back and god wasn't wagging his finger at him god the father in the story wraps his arm around him puts the royal robe of righteousness around him puts the royal ring on his finger and he slays the fattened calf then he serves it to him in a celebration and that banquet is what we have to look forward to and have received as being part of god's family you know uh jesus i mean god is a uh loving father who accepts us right where we are he doesn't ask us to clean up ourselves before we come to him we can pray to him right now and he hears us and he responds you know my my daughter julia who is up here and who didn't want to let go and she was uh being up front she came to my side a few nights ago and she wakes me up it's probably one o'clock in the morning and she kind of wakes me up in this very cute and soft voice as she's shaking my shoulder she goes dada dada i'm startled awake i'm like what who is that kind of groggy i think my tooth fell out like what i couldn't quite hear with all blood filling up her mouth she's slurring and saying a tooth fell out right i'm like oh so i get out of bed i have to go over and take her into the bathroom and we got to wash her mouth out what had happened and she was grinding her teeth at night and one was so loose that it jarred loose it kind of dislodged and it was floating around in her mouth one of those teeth so we got it out and the most important part was we had to ensure that the tooth fairy came a couple hours later so i had to stay up for that um i'm not bitter but you know it it it just reminds me of how much god wants to serve us you know he's not asking us to have our act all cleaned up he's just asking us to come to him and he'll get out of bed you know take us to where we need to go get us all cleaned up provide for us that's what he does you know there's two religions in the world the religion of dew and the religion of done christianity is a religion of done for what jesus has done for us the religion of dew the religion of merit and it's all the good things that you can muster up and do in order to be in a right standing with god the bible says those are filthy rags the only merit is found in christ and that's the number two thing is that we have a savior in jesus jesus is our savior so god is our father jesus is our savior and what does that mean well first it means that he redeems us redemption is not a word we use often except when if you're a coupon clipper you know you talk you you talk about uh redeeming those coupons um but uh in ancient times what this word meant is it means to to purchase or to pay a price right for freedom specifically and so it's often used around in the terms of slavery and in uh the first century there was about 60 million slaves people are being bought and sold like furniture and so a master can just purchase the rights to that individual and that the sale would go on well here's what god's done he's telling us that jesus gave life for life and he purchased us from slavery to sin and satan our evil taskmaster who is reigning currently on this earth it's like a rabid dog who's after us jesus is saying you can find freedom from his realm and you can only do it through him so he says we have redemption through his blood it's the blood of christ that purchased us according with the riches of god's grace that he lavished on us now jesus not only redeems us he frees us by his blood but he also forgives us and so this idea of forgiveness it traces back to the old testament you know um there is a celebration and and it still goes on today it's the day of atonement and it envisions when the priest would take two goats in one goat he would slay and he would sprinkle the blood on the altar but the second goat he would speak over and he would metaphorically kind of place the sins of israel god's people on the back of that goat and then that goat would be let out into the wilderness never to be seen again and that's where we get the term scapegoat let out into the wilderness means being taken away and that's what god's done for us in jesus he's taken away our sins never to be seen again can i get an amen on that and i don't know about your life but my life was messed up i had some sin still do past present future sins have been put on jesus's back he's crucified he's taken it away we're no longer held accountable to those sins does that make sense oh it's good it's good news now forgiveness of sins jesus also reveals to us the will of the father you know in in school you used to have secrets that would be passed right from people to people and uh you'd have to be on the inner circle to kind of get the the nuts and bolts of behind the scenes of what's going on um well god has told us the the inner circle of his counsel he's given us the revelation we are no longer in the dark jesus left heaven came to earth showed us what the will and heart of god the father is and he tells us paul he says that that will is to bring unity to all things in heaven and under earth unto christ so the disunity that we see today division based on socioeconomic status race gender background that will vanish in the church god is redeeming for himself a holy people that is unified and that's going to be different and it will be perfected in god's kingdom when it's fully established now the third good you have god is your father you have jesus as our savior the third good is the holy spirit and he is our security so he is received at the moment of belief the holy spirit comes into our life right when we believe we don't have to wait it's not someone else who gives us that it's god who gives that the moment of belief says it this way in verse 13 you were included in christ when you heard the message of truth the gospel of your salvation when you believe now the holy spirit is our seal as belonging to god forever being sealed uh has some rich imagery in in ancient times it means the seal of a ring like a king the crest on it and it meant authenticity and it carried weight the back of the crown was behind this ring and when it was placed on a document it meant that thing was binding man you could take that to the bank it was worth billions right that ring that's sealed it also kind of the idea of a zip lock baggie guess what you can put that in the freezer and no freezer burn love me some ziploc right sealed keep the outside stuff out and the inside stuff in right that is what being sealed is now uh we were marked in him with the seal the promised holy spirit but he also fills us with the blessings of christ and that's an ongoing thing that we have access right now to love joy peace patience kindness goodness generous faithfulness self-control comes from god into our lives and it's accessible right now you know he's the deposit guaranteeing our inheritance you know when you're in the home buying processes we have been praise god we found a home just down the street we're going to be able to move our family here and uh we we've locked into terms and and and now the home is ours but when you're in the home buying process you do something called earnest money and an earnest money is a deposit and it sets apart that house for you and it's a pledge that you will pay that and the home becomes yours god has pledged to us that our inheritance we will receive and he's given us the down payment of the holy spirit who is not less than god but who leads us to god and connects us to god in a broken world amen all right so let's not miss the big idea by believing in jesus we belong to god and as part of god's royal family god richly fills our lives with good gifts you and i now let's apply it to our lives the first is to believe in jesus all the blessings we've described are found in him there is no other name given under heaven by which we must be saved second is receive god's riches you don't have to twist his arm you just ask you go to him you can do it every day do it every
