small thought as she looks to the theme of the retreat the lord's prayer my name is pam bundy and i've been asked to share something from the verse from matthew 6 11 for um for retreat so i want to share two life lessons is how i like to call them the verse matthew 6 11 says give us this day our daily bread you know when i grew up as a child i don't think i ever thought when i sat down to dinner whether there'd be food on the table i never thought i might not have a lunch box i it never entered my mind although i heard that there were people starving in the world but i never really experienced it and then in 2014 god took me to uganda and i learned a lot of life lessons there and one of the things that happened at the very beginning of the trip was i went to the guest house which was where the amani choir was staying they were preparing to come to the united states for a choir tour and i was asked to lead them in a devotional but before i did they actually were having a time of prayer and when i listen to those children pray and i listen to them thanking god for the food they gave he gave them on that day that he would give them on that day when i heard them thank him for waking them up this morning that they were alive on this day something radically changed in my heart and i remember the story of god feeding the children in the wilderness giving them manna and he specifically gave it to them every day to gather what they needed for that day i really feel that it's a part of god's heart for us to learn total dependence on him that we we don't have anything that he hasn't given us that he hasn't provided we get stuck in our world and we just assume there's going to be money in the bank or in our pocket and we can buy what we need we have refrigerators to save food and freezers to save food you know in a country like uganda most people don't have electricity and they're a cash society they work they get paid in cash and they use that cash that day to buy the food for that day so they understand this verse very differently than we do and i really believe it was god wanting his disciples and us to learn to be dependent on him for every single thing more information on the weekend can be found under events on the church center app no mom left behind a one-night gathering for ladies of all seasons worship testimony a veteran mom for me [Music] let's just lift our voices and sing singing [Music] shall ever be [Music] wonderful is my savior's love for me yes lord jesus we sing of your love for us and we sing with hearts that are humbled and are thankful for as that psalm said 116 talks about just where would we be without you and that rings in my heart this morning where would we be without you god thank you for the way you rescue for the way you bring new life for the way that you redeem we give you praise today for this brand new day that you have given us in your mercy we sung of your mercy your mercies are new today lord jesus may we truly truly see and feel that is by your mercy you sent your son and that changed everything so with thankful and humble hearts we give you praise this morning in jesus name and all god's church said amen amen well good morning life house church how's everyone doing uh we were singing that song about how it's god's kindness that leads us to repentance it leads us closer to god you know and it's that kindness that's it should be experienced in the church when you're interacting with god people those who have been uh touched by jesus and uh given new life by christ you should feel something a little bit different as you interact and you know life house that's what i'm feeling from y'all i'm feeling god's generosity just as i'm spending time with you and yesterday we had the immense privilege of moving into our new house just down the road praise god for that uh blessing yep and an army of life housers descended on that home to help us move in and if it wasn't for that i'd still be there i'd still be behind that refrigerator trying to get that sucker in there and i wouldn't be able to preach this morning there's so much to do and honestly it was actually quite hard for me to accept the abundance of of your generosity so thank you thank you from the bottom of my heart from just your uh your graciousness you know two gifts that i was given this last sunday to are two things that i'm wearing today this hat and this shirt and you know i was looking at the local standings and giants are in first so hey i'm happy i'm happy to wear this thing it is uh awesome to be celebrating with you uh in god's house this morning and you know we kicked off a new season of ministry as we enter into a new season in the fall and we began this sermon series called filled full and it's a study through the book of ephesians and ephesians is a rich book and man i hope you buckle in because we're about ready to get filled full with uh all of god's blessing are packed into this book the truths and so it's going to hopefully touch our hearts and god's going to do a new work through his word but as we began last sunday we talked about in the first 14 verses paul was writing to the ephesians and reminding them of the salvation that we experience when we believe in jesus the goodness of god's grace and you know three of those aspects that we talked about are that god is our father that jesus is our savior and that the spirit is our security there's nothing better in the world and so paul starts this letter by reminding us of these truths but then he immediately goes from praising god the blessings that we experience to prayer from praises to prayer say that with me praises to prayer that should be something that happens in our life from praising to petitioning and what paul's going to pray for is that the ephesians would experience the richness in their day-to-day lives that they'd actually uh be reminded of that god's goodness and then that goodness would flow through them and they would experience it on a day-to-day basis and so what we're going to talk about today is powerful prayers and we're going to be finishing out the first chapter of ephesians verses 15 through 23 so you can open up your bible there we'll also put it on the screen but as we enter into this topic of prayers no doubt in a room this size and those who are joining us online there's going to be a fair amount of different perspectives on this area of prayer you know maybe depending on where you are in your spiritual journey or your uh your process of sanctification where you are uh i'll have some different perspectives on prayer and i was reading this week from barna he's a pollster and he gives him statistics and one of the statistics that he gives is that prayer is actually the most common religious practice in america isn't that kind of interesting that it's not necessarily bible reading or going to a gathering it's actually prayer and another statistic that he was mentioning is that about 50 percent of people pray daily and so it's a habit that is ingrained into their daily life now it's going to range widely of what we pray for and who we pray for and what the meat of those prayers are you know but each one of us probably were to think about it we've all gotten to that place where you acknowledge that you are powerless to control the outcome of what's happening maybe in your life or in somebody's life that you loved and i was reminded of that a few years ago when my aunt debbie who who i loved dearly and it was someone who prayed for me quite regularly when i was wayward and i was uh following the ways of the world she was one of those those those saints that that was praying for me and she got cancer and uh a particularly aggressive form of cancer so in a series of weeks months i mean she deteriorated rapidly and and we lost debbie but in those moments when i was asking her what uh the pain level was like and she was like on on a scale from one to ten she told me at 20. and your heart kind of drops and you're reminded god help her help her help her experience the power that i got nothing of but that only comes from you maybe in your life you're going through something pretty difficult maybe there's someone in your life that you know that's going something quite challenging prayer is the uh where the rubber meets the road of our faith and it's where god loves to move mightily and show us his blessings doesn't always turn out the way that we want but it turns out the way that we need and for his purpose so paul's going to teach us about powerful prayers so let's read this together starting in verse 15. he says for this reason ever since i heard about your faith in the lord jesus and your love for all god's people i have not stopped giving thanks for you remembering you in my prayers i keep asking that the god of our lord jesus christ the glorious father may give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation so that you may know him better i pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people and his incomparably great power for those who believe that power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised christ from the dead and he seated him at the right hand in the heavenly realms far above all rule and authority power and dominion in every name that is invoked not only in this present age but also in the one to come and god placed all things under his feet jesus and appointed him to be head over everything for the church which is his body the fullness of him who fills everything in every way so heavenly father i pray that you would speak to your people through your word by your spirit teach us how to pray lord may you use the prayers of your people to bring about the glorious sanctification of your people pray in jesus name amen amen amen so paul he moves from praise to prayer and he's going to teach us that when in our praise of god it's remembering the salvation that we experience in christ and then in prayers it is praying for the ongoing sanctification of god's holy people and so here's the big idea don't miss this paul's telling us that persistently pleading for people's spiritual progress is incredibly powerful it's powerful can i get an amen to that it is powerful we see god's power move through the prayers of his people on behalf of other people and so each part of this big idea is important let me break it down the first is persistently pleading and not just periodically mentioning there's a persistence in the lives of those that you love have you found that to be true that you don't have to necessarily work at it you just do it because you love them and you want their best you want the best for them and paul is as a pastor over the ephesians says things like ever since i have not stopped i'm remembering you in my prayers i keep on asking i pray for you there's a persistence involved in that you know when i was uh dating tonya and i i was falling in love with her you know there wasn't this uh sense of maybe i'll call her it was like when do i get to talk with her right when can i call her so i start calling her each week and then uh some days go by and then all of a sudden it's every day that that i'm calling her and then uh it is every second that i want to talk with her right and i think she might have put call blocking on there at the end i was getting kind of kind of aggressive um but there was that sense of persistence tenacity to go after it uh and and stay closely connected with her and that's that idea of persistence second piece here is persistence for other people and not just ourselves you know barna in that study was revealing that the most common prayers of prayers in america are prayed for ourselves self-centered prayers solo and self-centered was i think the name of the title you know and it's interesting that uh oftentimes in the church if you've been around church for any length of time you will hear people mention i'll pray for you i'll pray for you for that but do we do we actually then pray for it you know i got convicted of that a number of years ago and one of my mentors his name is pastor rick mandel and he um he just showed me by his example of what we can do in those moments you know if you're uh in the office or uh you're sitting next to your spouse or uh you're talking with your kids and a prayer request is made known and you're tempted to say i will pray for that do it right then just turn to god and say can we pray for that and then pray let them know you're praying and show them that you are praying it's a way to just not lose sight of it and actually come through on that and begin to pray for others then the uh paul is evidencing that his heart there is not just for himself but it's for all god's people it's giving thanks for them it's remembering them it's giving god glory because of what god is doing in their life third piece here is that paul prays for spiritual progress and not just material blessing or physical healing and often times in my own life i am tempted i'm blinded by this worldliness i i just have these lenses on that seem to uh be a magnet for for my mind to just focus on the temporal instead of the eternal to focus on the physical because i can touch it i can feel it in that moment and i can lose sight of the broader bigger picture of what truly is the most important in all of our lives and so paul he teaches us he prays that the spirit of wisdom and revelation would be given to them so that they may know god better which is far more important and they pray that the eyes of their heart would be enlightened and that they would experience a hope internal that that even surpasses anything else that's going on in their life and so this area of prayer can sometimes just feel shameful that you just don't measure up you know you should pray you feel like you want to pray and then you just don't well you know the apostle paul is kind of our coach he's a a loving guide and he wants to come alongside us and he wants to teach us how to pray and he's going to point out three different parts of powerful prayers and he's going to show us how to do it because the reality is in my own life i'm not as far along as i wish i was in this area of prayer and oftentimes i am so focused on me and what i need that i forget about what my wife needs what my kids need what would be best for them and definitely not my community or my neighbors church family or broader world so our prayer life can kind of quickly become solo and selfish so paul's going to teach us how we break out of that cycle and how we can move forward and pray some robust and powerful prayers and point number one is this we're gonna celebrate the spiritual discovery of others in their lives we're gonna recognize when someone has taken a spiritual step you know it kind of is our process it's listed over here on the wall discover develop deploy and each one of those pieces paul's gonna teach us in the major points here but the first one is spiritual discovery he says this ever since i heard about your faith in the lord jesus your love for god's people i have not stopped giving thanks the people of god are thankful people amen we are people of praise and so what we want to do is we want to have eyes to see the spiritual realities of and the steps that folks are taking in their life because the truth is that the spiritual life is a journey not just a destination but it's a journey it's a process and it's a process of discovery of awe and wonder of understanding what god has done and applying that to my life and then beginning to live that out and we don't get it all at once it happens over a lifetime you know as a dad and as a as a husband boy can i get this wrong you can have this expectation this hope for others that they would be just a little bit further along than where they actually are and so instead of praying sometimes what we can resort to is pushing so we kind of go go behind him and just push him forward right we can push him right out of the way and we got to be real careful about how we interact with that and one good focus for us is to realize that spiritual steps forward are always praiseworthy because god is the one who brings growth and so we can praise god for that growth the acknowledgment of them taking any step a step forward is a good and praiseworthy thing you know in 20 years of ministry one of the things i've learned is that sometimes folks like to keep praises to themselves and you you kind of realize this because we're afraid that someone might get a big head you know or it might puff them up a little bit with pride if they hear about the good things they're doing but you know actually the inverse is true if we are starved for encouragement we fail to take a next step sometimes and we get dry and so the body of christ needs to be those who are coming alongside and encouraging and praying for and lifting others up then lastly the goal is progress in faith and love not perfection but progress steps forward and so first we're going to celebrate the spiritual discoveries and then next we're going to take those steps as god reveals himself to us by a spirit through his word for spiritual development that's how we develop paul says it this way he says may god give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation so that you may know him better you know god is the one who is in charge of growth in our life to the degree that we're interacting with him and his spirit is the degree to which we're growing we can't manufacture that on our own spiritual development and so god uses three primary tools to develop us spiritually and they are the spirit the holy spirit in our life scripture god's holy word and saints his holy people those are the faith developing tools he uses in our lives and you know it's why it's so vital to get engaged in a life group all three of those were actually engaged in on a consistent basis when you are surrounded with others who are long on the journey with you not just here on a sunday morning but in a place where two or three are gathered and jesus there in in their midst and then uh scripture where you're opening god's word you're learning about how to apply it to your lives and then you're with others maybe who are further along than you on the journey and they can tell you about what's tripped them up or where they're at and what they've learned along the way and it can be helpful for you and so getting connected to a life group is a wonderful spiritual next step i want to encourage you to pray about that to take that step you know on our app there's ways to uh request information about the different groups they meet different nights of the week some during the day and then there's probably a group that's right for you and if there's not come talk to me we'll find it i'd love to get you connected and so number two here spiritual development occurs as we know god better the word that paul uses to know is a pretty robust term to know god better uh it's kind of not just the greek notion of knowledge but rather it's more the hubric understanding of to know which has three components to it and so the first is in our head and we get this right it's understanding mentally some facts some some realities about who god is what god has done about what jesus has accomplished on our behalf and so there's some real theology some some real things but secondly it's knowing it emotionally in our heart internally not just dry facts that kind of wash over our mind and go outside of our head right but that deep dig deep and go into our heart and then it changes our affections our loyalties and then also that it ends up working itself through our hands as we uh experience tangibly and make an impact on those in our surroundings that's what it means to know god it's a head heart kind of knowledge and then thirdly paul tells us that not only are we going to celebrate the spiritual discoveries and not only are we going to rely on the holy spirit on scripture and on saints to help us take those steps of development but ultimately we're going to be illuminated god is going to show us some new truths and do some new things in our life as we deploy missionally into our community that there's a reason we were saved it's for something and not just from something paul says it this way he says i pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened you know not often do we talk like that anymore right hey i pray that the eyes of your heart are enlightened what does that mean uh well you know in the first century uh this this idea of the internal world was real intangible and so there was real sensations that all the different stuff inside of you felt could see it could taste it could hear so you'll hear this language in scripture and paul is saying that the eyes of your heart he means that truths will be revealed to you and they'll be embraced by you and so he goes on and he tells us three of those truths that he's wanting us to understand and the first is that god has a purpose and a plan for our life that was a purpose in our plan you know the purpose uh driven life a book written a number of years ago by rick warren if not the most prolific cell selling a non-fiction book of all time it's second to the bible right and there's a reason people are dry and hungry for purpose they want to know that there's something more and we're we're not just here for a certain number of years and then we drift into eternity no no no god has a plan and a purpose for impact and he wants to use you to accomplish that uniquely your whole life has been a development for it and so he's going to say that you may know the hope to which he has called you and that calling is always from something but also to something we were singing of it earlier it's from darkness to light it's from sin to salvation you know it's from hopelessness to being filled with hope from being in a position of being helpless to being helpful and bringing a blessing to others in your life and so paul's going to remind us as well the second truth is that god's has fully provided for us we don't have to go searching for anyone else for anything else he is the source of everything good in our lives so to the degree that we're searching or feel like we lack should agree that we haven't trusted him yet for it so he says that the riches of his glorious inheritance and his holy people you know one commentator in writing on the book of ephesians he calls it made rich that we're made rich and this is his point now we are the richest people in the world there's nothing we lack and then point number three and there's no power that we don't have either and this is a huge point for paul because he's going to go on the next four verses in just this robust way and try to explain something that is truly about god's power that is available to you and i right now and it's going to continue on into eternity but you have access to it right now because we believe in jesus and he's in our lives and so paul uses four different words that all kind of in one way or another resemble strength or might or power and one of those words is dunamis dunamis it's where we get the word dynamic or dynamite it means explosive power that's the type of power that you have coursing through your veins he also uses the word energia and that word obviously is where we get the word energy from what he's saying is you have an electric current that flows through your veins that you have not fully tapped the end of the resources of and it's right there it's right there for us paul says his incomparably great power for us who believe it's the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised christ from the dead and it's the same that seated him at the right hand of god in the heavenly realms and it's also the one that exalted him far above all rule and it's not only for this age but also for the age to come and it's also the one that fills full the body of christ and so what i want you to take away guys is this is the type of power that we have resurrection from the dead type of power we have enthronement over all type of power we have enduring for all time type of power and then we have filled full in every way type of power you can see i could just keep on listening because it doesn't end god's power is full it is supreme it's exalted above everything and it's accessible to you and i and jesus now why did paul need to remind the ephesians of that the same reason he needs to remind you and i for it and it's because we see through a glass dimly we don't see everything perfectly and we're so mindful of what's happening right now this situation and yet we lose sight of the spiritual realities that are actually beyond those and more important and so we pray shallow prayers and we don't ask for god to unleash his power on behalf of our loved ones i'm just as guilty as anyone else and failing to do that to pray the types of prayers that paul is praying here and he's teaching us how to so let's not miss it the big idea is this persistently pleading for people's spiritual progress is what is powerful it's powerful it unleashes god's power in their lives you know and the apostle paul knew that and so he begins this book in chapter one with a powerful prayer and then he's gonna come back to it in chapter three and then he's gonna end with another encouragement at the end in chapter six and he says this and so pray in the spirit on all occasions and with all kinds of prayers and requests with this in mind be alert and always keep on praying for all the lord's people first powerful and it's what the people of god are meant to do and isn't it so reassuring knowing that those who are sitting on your right and your left they have your back they're praying for you they're lifting you up and so what if we did that church what if you and i were the types of people who woke up in the morning and we prayed for each person that god laid on our heart we asked that god would fill them full with his mercy with his grace his power would course through their veins that they would not miss out on any of the purpose that god has planned for their life now god would draw them closer relationally now they would experience something that we are just scratching the surface of experiencing what kind of difference would that make do you think in the marriages in this community spouses prayed that way for their spouse what kind of difference would it make for parents with their kids what difference would it make in our schools in our community or even in our world i think it'd be powerful to be unleashing god's power in it and so let me help make this personal i'm going to end just with some questions meant to spark the conversation not to finish it but to evaluate where we are in this spiritual journey of praying for others and the first question is to ask ourselves how often am i praying really maybe you're you're a person who is just beginning this spiritual journey you know maybe for you your step would be just beginning to pray each day just pray one time a day and see what god does through that or maybe if you've been on this journey for quite some time it could be praying at specific times during the day and can even get a prayer journal and just note down who i'm praying for how i'm praying for them and then praise god as he comes in and answers those prayers so for who and what am i praying for his prayers are powerful let's use them very liberally let's bless others let's be people of prayer amen amen let's pray heavenly father thank you for your goodness thank you for your grace thank you that you give us this amazing gift of prayer to interact and unleash your power in our lives and it is lord through your holy spirit your scripture god's holy people that brings about our sanctification and that's what we pray for that others will be draw near to you lord and we know that when that happens things change and lord so for anyone in here is going through a very difficult situation would i pray that your power would be unleashed in their life they would experience the power that is incomparable to any other power and his name is jesus it's in his name that we pray all god's children said amen [Music] [Music] me [Music] lay my head [Music] of the goodness of god [Music] that i am is [Music] upon you as a father [Music] would you stand with us [Music] every breath that i am [Music] [Music] with my is laid down i'm surrendered now i give you everything [Music] is [Music] is [Music] you have been so so good with every breath that i am [Music] we will sing of the goodness of god amen before we go i wanted to introduce you to uh this young vocalist that's with us today this is cambrie swanson and um it's been a crazy week for her and i wanted to create an opportunity for her to say hi to her dad he was in surgery on friday with extensive neck surgery and so cambrie do you want to say hi to your dad this morning online but then you know after we listened to the message with jordan i'm like you know what we need to be praying for that man he was in surgery this morning excuse me on friday morning for quite a while with three different surgeons working on his neck but praise the lord they did um quite a good work in there and more better than the time they tried before and uh so now he's just in a whole lot of playing if you can only imagine when folks are rooting around in there for the time that they were so why don't we as a church family join cambrie and um just pray for him in this moment as he's in the hospital recovery recovering let's pray heavenly father we just thank you for brendan we thank you lord for the hands of the surgeons that have just done a good work we pray lord jesus that his care there at the hospital would be amazing lord jesus and that ultimately lord your healing would begin its work in his neck in his heart in his mind lord jesus you would bring him back to 100 we thank you for him we thank you for his family we thank you for his kids we pray lord just a prayer of blessing over him that your healing would begin even now in this moment that he could feel it lord that he'd be encouraged that he'd find peace lord and that he'd be relieved of the pain we pray this in the mighty mighty name of jesus and everyone said amen amen continue to pray for him if you wouldn't mind go in god's grace in his peace and have a wonderful rest of your day [Music] all my life you have been so so good with every breath that i am [Music] is running after me your goodness is running after it's running after me with my life laid down [Music] is [Music] i was is [Music] that kind of stuff takes practice does life hit you so hard that you've been knocked down have you gone too far to find the middle ground did they raise you so high just to put you back down have you been so lost you could never be found i've been so so wrong
