again they got they got midfielders in behind England Midfield and then you know they play the ball around the corner and then it gets played up to alabel who uh crosses the yeah toab toar and then when when Al plays it out to karella first time he kind of under hits it and you think Walker's going to get there but it makes a decision up for karella he has to come onto it and there's a challenge coming and when he hits this cross alabau continued his run it's a brilliant goal he gets across the the front post there but it's very tight in the offside and but it's just a completely down that left side from Back to Front into middle to front out wide full back forward great cross in yeah lovely finish it was so close wasn't it the other yeah I mean we're talking three four inches the automated offside obviously is right on the ball uh so it was it was a terrifically well worked goal but I just feel you know in Zu meni coming on for Spain did a great job as well uh but I just feel with England he's picked a side in every game that hasn't played well and he's continued to almost pick the same side particularly in the forward positions and he's picked a side that's just barely Over The Line in all these games but and today I get it before this tournament if you just said to me Phil foron can be dropped I would have said no because he's he's been too good at Man City but he hasn't been good enough for England and we had a ladin k pmer who has been excellent had a great season and he's looked much livelier now he played Phil foron more Central and he played Jud Bellingham out in the left which didn't work too well for him who look at the fireworks behind Mark but he played Phil foden to to sort of do a manm marking job in rodri and that took any sort of uh Forward Thinking Play from Phil for and canny Out the play he had a poor game but Southgate didn't do anything outside the box yeah to try and make a change even in the team selection he said no no we'll roll the same players out again cuz that's worked really well for us it didn't that's my concern over the last eight years coming e and going back to the Croatia semi-final my lasting thought after watching them is what if what if why what if he played him what if he was a bit more tactical away what if he was a bit more reactive proactive sorry rather than reactive and and that's what I felt watching this tournament we stumble through we stumble through we jump on that side of the group we stumble through and we get then we get the final and we lose I'm just and I'm just a bit I'm just a little bit I just want to go to Mark just a little bit frustrated by it now you know just I'm sorry 10 second about that we all agreed during tournament that he should have changed some players so why he didn't that's the thing the only thing I want to say you know we can we can try to find excuses oh yeah for a good season Saka a good season G had a good season but during the tournament how many times we say it should change yeah he never did no let's we're joined by Mark now who is was at the game outside the stadium for us now Mark this is what happens from an England perspective when you come up against a proper team yeah but I do think there's an element of it being a missed opportunity I listen to the guys there AG with Mak in the sense that you just wonder why weren't the changes made and I think you know Harry Kane has been taken off earlier and earlier in games and you're watching it today I think I I me I made it not 38 minutes saying already it started Kane can't move you know the Spanish Defenders are knowing exactly what to do with him Jude Bellingham was getting frustrated I I don't came across on camera but just before Kane was taken off June bam lost it with gett Southgate on the side of the pitch as if to say change something do something and Kane was taken off now you know Harry Kane's only 30 and we're not writing him off here he's the top score in the Bundesliga last se but he's not fit he's clearly not fit and I think when GIS Southgate goes away and reflects on this tournament he'll think you know I should have had the courage maybe not to pick Harry Kane a massive call as a captain but his movement was was minimal so it made it so easy for Spain to handle him as soon as Kane went off Ole Watkins came on then Palmer England played so much better they had so much more freedom Bellingham and sakur had so much more belief in the players in front of them they were stretching Spain that's about missed opportunity that had Southgate been a bit Bolder earlier England have got the players to hurt Spain they've got the players to really catch them out with the pace but again you know just taking too long it's Croatia 2018 it's Italy Euro 2020 yeah we're being wise after the event but we're actually we could see it happening at the time Y and Gate's job is is to see it so that's why I think it went wrong England really haven't hurt anybody in this tournament with of any note with the players that they've got that should be doing that I mean how many times do you see and have we seen uh one of the best midfielders in the world this year Jud Bellingham how many times has he played left left midfield for Real Madrid in a four how many times and he spent half the game chasing back to help Luke Shaw yeah is that Jud Bellingham strength yeah I mean you've been as you you've been as well putting Jude Bellingham on rodry because I tell you what that would have put more of the frighten the life out of rodry having Bellingham in there than having Phil foron but GIS Southgate was like you know what I'll put I'll put a four and I'll put I'll put I'll put the best goalscoring midfielder in Europe and I'll stick him on the leftand side we've said this all along and you know G Seth has got England to two finals so it's kind of like lot he's done really well but the but is had a coach an elite coach a champions league coach a premier league winning coach had this squad yep I mean they' have won it because I I thought binghams had a poor tournament you know I thought he did okay in the last 20 minutes when Kan went off but you know Bellingham and Kane have had poor tournaments and I think a proper coach a two CLA Mourinho and that's the level we're talking about these players would have decided straight away that is not working for you I drop F and Bellingham or saak the three don't work together but Southgate he just wouldn't make the big calls and he made the big calls when he had to credits internet he made it early with Kane but it wasn't early enough in the end and and it's no it's no surprise is it from what we've seen and like you're talking about eight years ma we've sat and had these exact same discussions so why did we expect anything different this time around well like we in in essence we didn't yeah you know off camera when we were watching the games we all knew what was going to happen you know we say before the game we Ru with our heart we want England to win but effectively they were playing the best team and they got founds undone and what we've seen in the seven well the six games prior to this game resulted in the right you know resulted in how we thought it was going to end we haven't seen anything for them to say this is the best team in in Europe and um it's a I think it's a missed opportunity yes we've got to finals yes we've got to semi-finals but this the standard of opposition we've come against and the the type of players we've had I personally feel we should be doing better I think we should have beat Croatia in 28 we should have beat Italy at home Jordan the coov when all the fans were ours we should have well we should have performed better in this tournament I'm not saying we should have beaten Spain but we should have performed way way way better than what we've seen and I think it's just um you know I go away from this really frustrated because I think we have I think the standard of opposition has been poor apart from Spain and we should have done a whole lot better no a whole lot better performance-wise performance- wise nobody has an excuse as a player saying that oh they were tired because they had a long season like like let's say Billingham for Real Madrid because caval play on the other side is's much older than Bellingham and we we s to today that he was absolutely fantastic so nobody has an excuse so maybe the preparation wasn't good in England maybe something went went wrong and they know they Wen prepared uh and again when I say that to England I can say exactly the same for France you know so don't go to to some explanation I wouldn't like England and but what we see what we saw for England is not enough tactically physically uh we know that technically they know the goal that they scored today with Saka Bellingham K parner that was Exquisite I loved it I love love the movement but it cannot be once and it can be kind of a surprise otherwise we weren't surprised with what we saw it was just what we saw throughout the tournament Mark let's talk about Spain a little bit shall we I think everyone agrees they you're thoroughly deserving this the best team in the tournament an exciting team now going forward given the youth within that Squad yeah Lin wasn't great tonight but he still had a few moments where he caused England problems Nik Williams you know man of the match tonight Spain have got you know Spain such incredible depth they've had it for so long now but England have got the depth as well I just think that Spain had a better Coach tonight and I think that's what it that's what it was you know and you know Spain are formidable but can I just make a point on Southgate in the sense that we the the debate will start about should he stay should he go and I think he'll go I think he's I think he's had enough whether he won or not tonight but we know the fa want to keep him but my point is why because for me the best the best England team I've seen in my lifetime was the one that Maka played on the Terry vbls he was the best coach we ever had at Terry V but the fa one because he didn't quite like the Terry venal off the pitch or off field situations now the fa just want a quiet life the fa suits just want somebody who is like them who is very safe very polite a great Ambassador for the game do they want the best coach England got a great great group of players they they're in danger of wasting a generation of great players as they have done in the past so they really should go out and get the best man for the job but I think what'll happen is they'll go for GR Potter because gram Potter is is an emblematic guy of the the St George's Park coaching system that's what they want they want somebody who embodies the the fa's coaching setup they want an Englishman but for me the the best coach has to be the best coach because this generation players needs a top top coach now Spain haven't got that with the lente I have to say they haven't got a guy that's got angelotti or Luis henrique CV but he knows the system he's come through and the players obviously trust him so for me England the fa have to look out beyond the their shallow pool of talent of managerial talent and go for the best because they've got a group of players that really really need a top coach part of your job is obviously is to win and and get to finals no and I think there's something Augie that we've been talking about for a long time is that England have gotten themselves to a certain point and it's it's sort of masking the other side of the game part of your job is obviously get to the finals and win obviously it is but other part of it is is to get the best out of your players whilst England have got to the final they have not gotten the best out of their players delente has right you got karella who doesn't play regular at Chelsea you got leaport who wouldn't be in the Man City team before Jon stones and and was out it and there's other reasons for that is as well uh and then you got youngsters up front and you got in the way position you got Alvaro Morata you can't just say these are better players than what England they're not they're not they're very very very good players but they're not better than what England has so Spain have got much much more than this coach has out of this gpy players then Gary Southgate has got out of his not only in results but in performance and entertainment and you watch the Spanish side play and one of the big differences is for me it's not just the style of football but they're not frightened to try things corre they're not frightened to make a mistake this England side I think are very timid so we can all agree that there is only one person responsible for that pretty much that's what it is I think because we have the uh the contrary with the LA fente yeah and look at the change they' made in the World Cup obviously we talked about a lot pass pass pass pass pass so boring it horrible to watch and the LA fent come in we're going to do it this way and it has worked so well and and he he had the agreement of all the players they went for it and everybody who was coming on like zuie mindi today or or these are not these are not Superstars across European foot but they go for it they accept the situation and the tactic of the coach so therefore all the credit goes to the lafuente and for me most critics go to to Gary Sai because he had the time to do something and to create to create a way of playing football and when you are English with the talent of player that you have I'm sorry you have the time to create something special he missed that yeah yeah with South G's approach you have to win with that with that approach you have to win we've said it all along here haven't we you cannot play that poorly with that amount of talent you have at your disposal and not win and if you if you play like that and that is your plan and you don't win you have to expect criticism cuz they had a wonderful opportunity as I said not necessarily to win it but to show how good they are because a lot of the teams the bigger sides across Europe are all in transitional period Germany are going to lose a few aren't they they're going to have to change the team Holland's were disappointing Italy have been disappointing France are going to lose a few players and and before they start so this was our this was our real chance to have a to be entertaining to get our good players on to show how how classy we can be to show that we've got a plan and it wasn't it was just to stifle to Hope let's bit of Fortune yeah let's get to this and oh we we're on that side of the group oh we've met a very poor Holland team oh we got past them and then in the end it was like right we're playing a good team we'll lose today and and we so it was just a bit of a damn scrib today we all expected England to lose and they lost the way they did that g sgate said before the game that he didn't believe in fairy tale well that's definitely so we reassure him that no no we don't believe [Music]
