it's over the dream is over Southgate is over the chance to lift silverware in Berlin it's all over it's a heartbreak Beyond Compare and at times it looked good at times it felt good at times I thought that it was actually going to happen but we made too many mistakes too many of our big players simply didn't turn up this tournament at various points we were too cowardly we were losing games all the time last 16 we're losing quarterfinal we're losing semi-final we're losing and ultimately in the final we were losing and we couldn't find a way back into the game Spain were too good Spain were dazzling they were a wonderful team who deserved the trophy they were amazing from minute one when they kicked their tournament off in Berlin it was so obvious to everybody that they were going to make it back to Berlin for the final they were a wonderful side a joy to watch proper Wingers proper fullbacks overlapping they really were a sensational team but the most frustrating thing of the lot I felt like they were there for the taking I know they were wonderful but rodri went off that should play into our hands pedri wasn't available that should play into our hands Morata went off that should play into our hands surely if there's ever a time to beat Spain a Spain team who've had such a difficult passage it makes the victory of their so impressive but the cumulative of effect of playing Croatia playing Italy playing Germany playing France playing us surely the cumulative effect and losing a player like rodri and pedri surely that should have meant that there was a a chance for us to find a way for Spain it's unreal I think it's their biggest ever achievement and when you think about the three of the things that they did in a row I think this is the biggest achievement that they have ever managed as a footballing nation unreal truly truly brilliant Fair play to them they deserved it it's their tournament the tournament has belonged to them but for us it just feels like everything is over it feels like the second that the ball hit the back of the net was aro's goal not only did it change this tournament not only did it end this tournament not only did it end that game not only did it end the debate around who was going to win the tournament but it ended everything that we believed in it's over it really is over for South Gate and don't get me wrong I think he's done well and I really do like him and I regret how harshly I've treated him at times I think he's a good manager and I think he's a really good man but he really did get a lot of things wrong so many mistakes from GIS just think about the tournament as a whole so many errors you know too much Kane not enough Palmer OE Watkins and Ivan only goal machine sitting on the bench let's make the most of them how can you only take one fullback to a tournament who's fit that can play on the left hand side and he wasn't even fit in fact you take one left-sided fullback to a tournament and he's not even fit that is a gamble it's such a Gamble and ultimately that gamble didn't pay off Anthony Gordon Anthony Gordon how many times have we watching a game where we thought a Winger would stretch the game a a Winger would bend benefit this England team so much somebody that could play on the outside somebody that would offer the opportunity to go beyond somebody that would offer the opportunity to stretch the pitch Not only would it benefit that left hand side that was so nullified and so impotent all tournament Not only would Anthony Gordon open up that entire Left Channel it would make Phil foden a better player over there it would make Kieran trippier a better player over there it would create however almost more importantly than what it would do to the left side it would create so much more room on the other side it would allow Bayo saaka to be at his expressive best it would allow KY Walker to bomb on and overlap and be so effective in the opposition box and it would create so much more room in the Midfield because because we were so one-dimensional on that left side Kieran trippier every single time pick the ball up play the ball backwards or inside every single time literally every single time every single time this isn't an exaggeration a lot of the time when you talk about football you say things and you go every time every time and you don't mean every time every time Chelsea take a corner to ate at the first man it's not true it's not every time you exaggerate to make the point I'm not doing that here this is not an exaggeration literally every time Kieran tribia picks the ball up it will 100% go inside or backwards probably both of those things never does he look on the outside never does he even faint to go on the outside and as a result what happens the pitch becomes so much smaller because Phil foden's natural gravity pulls him inside K and trippier can only move inside so we're not playing in all of the pitch 25% of the pitch we're not using we're going inside makes it so easy to defend us it makes it so Compact and it makes life so difficult for Bayo saak on the other side so with everybody aware of that how has Anthony Gordon not got some minutes how have we seen so much of Harry Kan when it was apparent that he wasn't fit so obvious so early how have we seen so few minutes of Cole Palmer who have been basically Al one of our most effective players this tournament and how hasn't Ivan Tony played more roles particularly in The Knockout particularly off the back of what he did in Gan kirkin when he came on and changed the game made it possible for England to play in final you know his knockdown for Kane his presence to the duud Bellingham bicycle kick Ivan Tony changed the trajectory of England's tournament and then Ole Watkins off the back of what he did in Dortmund how have we not seen more of him because Harry Kane and everyone knows everyone who's ever watched my content knows I like Kane I rate him so highly but it was so clear from minute one that he wasn't fit he wasn't up to it he looked like he was running INRI called Gus hiding Gus hiding said it look like he was playing walking football and okay scored a couple of goals but he's always going to do that nothing was his own making a couple of them were on a plate you know one of them was a penalty so there were so many errors and it just feels like it's the end of an era and I think it's an era that g Southgate can be proud of you know the Southgate Legacy may actually be to lay one of the strongest foundations for someone else to build on and finish the job maybe that's what his role is you know we talk about the culture shift we talk about the way that he's changed English football and all of that is true but maybe his biggest contribution is setting us up for the future getting the foundations in place for America because I think I think he's a good manager but I also think that he deserves to leave with his pride intact and I think that we are getting to the stage where the general consensus is that he's not good enough you know he took us further than anyone could have ever imagined that he would he did his best but ultimately his best hasn't been good enough we are now 58 years of hurt and we need somebody to come in and finish the job because when Spain scored it was such a painful moment because it really did feel like the tournament was going our way felt like that we were in the ascendancy and then bang cella's pinpoint pass Zs excellent finish and it was over it was over over and the goal felt symbolic it ended the game it ended the tournament but maybe it ended Garris South Gates time as England manager because it does feel like it's over and if you think about what's happened to him this tournament things have changed you know the days of singing Atomic Kitten about Gareth Southgate are well and truly over everybody that doubted him early was ultimately proved correct he's been booed by his own fans former players have thrown him under the bus players I think who he would have seen his allies Alan Shira teammate threw him under the bus Gary you'd expect it but threw him under the bus so it's it really is over also you've got to remember it's not only the former players you know what game was it was it Slovakia Slovakia or Slovenia he had beer cups thrown at him he was name was buo his name was bu I think when we played Denmark and they read his name out so it's getting to the stage where I think he needs to leave and needs to be protected for his own sake I feel like it's time to go because the only thing that he can do now is win the only way that it will be considered an acceptable appointment to maintain is if he wins and ultimately winning is going to be very difficult in America and if he goes to another tournament on wins fine but if he doesn't I mean he's already had four four attempts at a major tournament he's got nearer than any other manager apart from sural Ramsey But ultimately with this team with this squad with the amount of time he's had eight years in the making we haven't exactly set this tournament on fire have we eight years in the making to watch that draag one all draw against Denmark you know he's achieved big things you know no England manager has reached the final on foreign soil ever no England manager has ever got to back-to-back finals so he deserves deserves praise he actually you could easily argue deserves a Knighthood but but it's over and I think that history will be very kind to him and history should be kind to him because there is a legacy the legacy of changing the culture of making England worth watching again of making England enjoyable to watch again of making England enjoyable to play for again and of building the foundations We Know What It Takes now to get to finals we are a consistent team to get to finals we are perennially knocking on the door and you know what I've said about Arsenal winning the league the reason why I believe Arsenal will win the league is because they perennially knocking on the door the reason why Chelsea won the Champions League in 2012 is because in the six years before 2012 we were in four semi-finals including a final as well we were perennially knocking on the door and when you knock on the door enough somebody will answer but ultimately it wasn't enough Gareth Southgate didn't have enough and I think it's fair to say now that it's somebody else's turn you know we have the players we are all convinced of that and apparently these players want G Southgate to stay that's what you're hearing you're hearing that the general consensus of the players that they want G Southgate to stay but he needs to be insulated from that he needs to be protected from that he isn't the man for the job ultimately we know what Gare Southgate can do with this England team and it isn't enough maybe Eddie how can come in and find a way of getting the best out of Trent Alexander Arnold and keeping Cole Palmer on the pitch and bringing in a team that has a bit of width on both sides and maybe making sure that Anthony Gordon can play well and maybe working out a system that can get Phil Fen on the ball rather than desperately perennially looking for the ball find a way of getting him on the ball someone else out there surely can bring a different ingredient to this to this team you know Southgate will be a hard act to follow and I know that the fa will be encouraging G Southgate to stay but overall I just don't think it's fair on him he's had so much criticism he's been through so much this tournament a lot of the criticism is fair a lot of it is just but GS have been launching plastic cups at him man booing his name you know it all feels like it's gone and at least if you bought a new manager in there would be that honeymoon period but I'm heartbroken to be totally honest with you because I really did believe but what I also believe is that we can take a lot of pride in this team we can take a lot of pride in this tournament we can take a lot of pride in this manager and I truly do believe that our time will come it wasn't to be this time but next time more than any other time also if you're going to win it Win It in America R won't that be amazing thank you for watching really Keen to hear your thoughts in the comments below heart officially broken
