I thought that adventure life welcome back to my channel guys tonight we are going to do a do-it-yourself we are going to make fancy candles like these ones from Burt's Bees we're not going to use essential oil and we're not going to use wax we are going to use good old-fashioned Crisco oil you see that little flame mark right there that is what this oil was originally made for so let's go ahead and do it so some fun facts about these candles are one of the 6-pound candles will burn for 72 days at eight hours a day 72 days for eight hours a day this size right here is an off-brand one it's a no-name one this is a three pound can a three pound can will burn for 36 days at eight hours a day amazing right so the reason that I want to do these homemade candles is because of this sweet little thing here this is my terra cotta pot radiant heater from my Honda Element so if you've been following me on my channel go back to the title terracotta pot heater and watch for the future updates about that heater I've modified it yet again so what it's made of is I'm using this fondue rack from my Swiss fondue pot and I was placing this candle inside of it like this and then I was placing two pots over it but I've refined the design one pot works perfectly for this lighting the candle placing a coin over the hole to track the heat in the pot within 3540 minutes this starts radiating heat the only problem is is that these candles are anywhere between nine dollars and fourteen dollars they are paraben free and they're soy based but they're super expensive mmm and they only burn for eight to 11 hours and it's best to blow them out after three hours because otherwise and the wick just burns out too fast so with the candles that we are going to make tonight this size a jar is just your basic canning jar it will take two pounds oil so this is the little can of Crisco oil so two of these will fit in one of these I do also have a one-pound size canning jar so one of these will fit in one of these I'm going to be making my candles in these sweet little blue jars with these machine lids it's best to have a lid for the jar if you're going to be storing them for a while or if you're going to be traveling with them because Crisco will liquefy at a room temperature of 80 degrees or higher so the things you're going to need to make these candles are Crisco oil a jar with a lid and the candle so what I've gone and done prior to starting my film is I have heated up the crystal oil in the microwave for about 30 seconds you want it to be liquefied when it's in the can gets solid so that's what it looks like in the cans solid you can see I've scooped this one out to start these candles so yeah I paved up the oil and I'm going to pour the oil into my jar okay then I'm gonna put that jar in my fridge or let's at room temperature here's one that I had in my fridge so then what I'm going to do is I'm going to take one of my candles and measure it to the jar and I see that I need to cut a little bit of it off so I've gone ahead and I've burnt this one out a little bit for time and then you just push the candle into the jar push it all the way down and go ahead and light it and there you go guys that's it that's all it takes this little tiny candle is about half a pound now I just plan on lighting it between three and four hours a day so I think I'm going to get between mmm five and seven days out of this candle and as you'll see this handle fits perfectly in my terracotta pot here so let's talk a little bit about the history of Crisco Crisco was introduced to America in 1911 by Procter and Gamble the original construction of the oil was a vegetable oil not a cotton seed and the acronym of Crisco is crystallized cottonseed oil it was actually produced for World Wars 1 and 2 for lubricating machinery and engine oil and it was also used for soap making but with the invention of electricity it became less and less necessary to have oil lamps in my country where I'm from in Canada the Inuvik Indians have been using oil lanterns for hundreds of you even thousands of years lots of indigenous people have been using oil lanterns for thousands of years they used seal oil and whale blubber and the oil was actually the most essential piece of furniture in the house given that there's no forests up there if you google in music Canada and the Northwest Territories there are no trees there's nothing to light a fire so these oil lanterns were very essential for the homes to heat them and light them in 1960 Crisco was launched in America as this magnificent oil for baking and cooking excuse me and 2004 it was reintroduced as hydrogenated palm oil blend Oh hydrogenated anything no good in 2012 it was recreated over into a blend of hydrogenated soybean oil and hydrogenated palm oil again don't eat anything hydrogenated so if you were to make one of these candles let's look at this guy's here this is an off-brand so it's a no-name and I got it at Walmart and this is a three pound cam now this one will burn for 36 days and all you need to do is take the lid off take a big little candle and insert it down inside this one I'm actually going to save this oil because I want to make some other small ones but if you want it to make a 36 Day candle this will be the size to do they do sell a bigger size and it's six pounds that will burn for 72 days no I guess you're wondering does it smell like fried food or oil there's no smell does it smoke give off black smoke there's no black smoke they do right I've been told that it's recommended to trim the wick often which I do that with my candles anyways because that makes them burn longer and slower I really thank you guys for coming out to my channel and watching my fun little videos and watching it girl if you go back into my old videos there's one about terracotta pot heaters and you'll see this little terracotta pot heater inside the Honda Element in my Honda Element fireplace I know it sounds ridiculous and dangerous but I promise you it's super safe so I'm really excited to be excuse me making these candles for my Honda Element and for my house when I
