live from fairfield ohio seems so easy today we have kim and she's going to show you another way to use your embroidery machine you know february is national embroidery month and this is another way that you can use it she's going to be showing you these um edge to edge quilts so go share kerry whoever you are hi i'm kim um to make your quilt and then be quilted in embroidery mode we have these designs that are made called edge to edge quilting and what you do is each motif has a certain size and right here is where i combined this row this row and this row together you can see my little spot so if you have a machine with precise positioning that's where you're going to love it because look at the outcome when you're done that looks really nice now these came out of packages of patterns yes so there's 14 total that you can get but you do want to get the starter book because it explains how to decide what size design because they are in multi-sized and multi-formatted so you can use it on any machine and this pattern here that's on your pink quilt was out of that first starter kit correct yes it was out of this one so each one of the packages uh has 10 different designs in it so you can pick them most of them are theme oriented and there's 14 different packages at the current time for this program right yes okay so here's a couple of the other ones and you can see this one here is kind of uh flower designs and we've got holidays i love the circles we have some place around here we have an example of what that looks like that really looks good then we've got the children's designs and we've got one down here that's more along the line of holiday designs but they are do do a very good presentation on the quilt they show up really good yes and you can choose whatever color thread and then on the backing here i just went with the same pink because it always makes the front stitching look nice and plus it showed up on my white back very good over here i'm working on a purple one so this is the pack this design with the hearts and it's kind of appropriate because valentine's was this month a couple of days ago so the first thing you do when you is i drew lines they're kind of hard to see i do lines so that's where my center of the design goes as you can see i haven't done this side so i've already you start in the middle and then you work out and down so here i started this row already there's my marking so now i'm going to put a design in this area right here so this looks like a larger hoop than this is a larger hoop than what i started because this is a larger the embroidery machines are coming with larger hoops so if you have a smaller hoop which i did at home i could have used that too but you want a little bit of leeway so you can position it and use precise positioning like on the foss so i could show you how that works what machine are you using today so this is the fog icon and this machine is being replaced by the icon 2 which is looks like that in the picture not out yet but coming in may to a sewing machine center near you including seems so easy in fairfield yes okay so i have this design here and this is where my starting point is and as you can see my needle's here and i want it over here so i am going to go over here precise positioning i'm going to set it to tell it that that's the point and i can actually move it with my finger or i can fine tune it with the wheel put my needle down it's not quite perfect not yet it takes a little bit sometimes so you're just basically finding the the point where you want it to start and then hand cranking your needle down to verify that it's in the right position correct because that way you can see that the start and the stop are a little more hidden and these don't go as fast as i like okay so i'm happy right there okay so i'm gonna say okay on my machine and it's gonna go to the screen and i'm gonna hit the start stop button and i'm going to let it stitch out [Music] and one thing when you do quilting on or embroidery on quotes like this you want to make sure that the weight is not bunched up to let the arm move freely because mike doesn't like that our technician so this disc has takes a while to stitch out but it's fun watching it do its pattern because it'll do its pattern and go up and it'll come up here and go down and and you appear to be using a purple variegated thread on this yes i am i wanted something to pop a little bit and and on the back i use the same white as the other one and it's the same thread a little harder to see on that one but this kind of gives the long arm quilting look but you're doing it on your embroidery machine so i have to watch over here when it goes on the sides and it doesn't make any difference that you're running off of the fabric when the stitch is doing this because you want a quilt to the edge if possible and then i'll trim it here and put my binding and then it'll hide these stitches to lock them in better just like a long arm would do so each design could be not as much and as you can see the machine doesn't go very fast because it wants to go a nice steady pace it doesn't have a speedy gonzales move well i don't think you want it to so i got two minutes left on this and look over here and it's basically you've got a plus mark following along the design showing you exactly where you're at in the design correct yes and down here it even tells you time how many stitches it's only a 1700 stitch so it doesn't take very long and once you get the hang of re-hooping each time it gets easier because on the hoops we have registration marks so this is the center going this way and here and here is the center going this way um i have it off centered a little bit because i knew i had enough room on this hoop and i just noticed that you kind of gingerly touched the fabric there at the edge was that to make sure that it the foot didn't catch that edge yes you got to watch the edges we don't want to do an oops we do enough of those without goofing anyway don't we yep that's almost done and once again what was the name of this pattern called um it's edge-to-edge quilting with embroidery and here's the desire on it emily scott designs and it looks like we have come to a stopping point so that hooping's done so now what i'll do is as you can see my lines going here i'll connect to right here so i'll move my hoop down okay and then i'll have that corner so i'll have this done and i just have two more rows left to do so as you can see this one said jumbo that means it's more jumbo sizes because this hoop is bigger because the machines like the solaris and the icon they have bigger hoops now so that's why the jumbo means they're bigger so this hoop is what 12 by 14 something like that yeah let's see 14 by 10 and a half ish very good so so you enjoy doing the the edge to edge yes so this is probably the third one i've done i haven't done as much as i would like to but i did owls on one for owl quilt and doesn't it seem so easy it does seems so easy as you can see join us again and thanks for joining the nbc presentation for today thanks bye bye
