i'm always learning new things about disney world every single time i go i find something new and exciting or some new problem that i need to learn how to fix [Music] hey everybody it's aj for disney food blog now it's been an especially weird year for like everybody and for me someone who normally goes to disney world every few weeks for my job that weirdness is compounded because i haven't been to disney world as often as i normally am instead of having to navigate teeny tiny changes from my last visit i'm getting smacked in the face with major changes each and every time i visit disney world lately and i'm also getting the opportunity to really get a guest experience and know what it's like to stay at disney world when you only get to go once in a while so what did i learn from my last trip well things are not quite back to normal no matter how much we'd like them to be and tony's town square is still not my top restaurant pick in magic kingdom there's a lot of stuff that i confirmed and learned and had to figure out when i was at disney world recently so let's dive in okay first one is that disney never has long enough sheets on their beds this is a super weird one it is a long-term issue that i always always experience and i just want to warn you about it so here's what happens your disney world hotel bed yeah they have a really really long sheet on the mattress but it's all tucked in at the top and then what you have at the bottom of the bed is just like the sheet ending way above your feet and then just like a mattress pad or protector or whatever so you don't actually have your sheet tucked in to your bed it's very frustrating they don't have fitted sheets at disney world they only have two flat sheets which i used to be a housekeeper at a comfort inn and it makes a lot more sense to do it that way because then when you're doing laundry you just do all the sheets and you don't have to worry about separating the fitted sheets from the flat sheets so they're all just flat sheets but what happens at disney world is they tuck in the flat sheets way at the top then your sheet doesn't go all the way down to the bottom of the bed heads up it happens so in the middle of the night you basically have pulled up the bottom sheet and it's all wrapped around your feet and it's annoying um so that's still happening that hasn't changed fyi i am always ripping apart the bed and remaking it when i go to a disney world hotel so if that's something that will bother you i wanted to let you know and if it's not something that bothers you aren't you a lucky duck okay another interesting thing i learned on my trip is that liselier in epcot has the very best kids menu anywhere and no kid will order from it so the celia in epcot's canada pavilion has their cheddar cheese soup and their mushroom risotto on their kids side dishes menu the portions are perfect and the mushroom risotto comes with truffle butter sauce on top the same truffle butter sauce that they put on their filet now i have no idea what kid would actually eat either of these dishes like how many people have kids that are like yeah get me the mushroom risotto with the truffle butter sauce but i ordered them and i loved them i ordered them as side dishes to a grown-up entree i also got a rib eye so um but they were the perfect size for i just wanted a taste right i just wanted i didn't want the huge skillet that it comes with if you order a side so i just ordered the kids sides and they were really really good both of these dishes are iconic they've been around forever and they always come highly recommended from us here at dfe as well as from many other disney guides so if you want a small portion of those sides order them via the kids menu if your server allows it then you don't have to worry about ordering too much food and not finishing the whole adult size portion if you just want to try these famous side dishes and still eat your steak and brussels sprouts and poutine and all of that stuff that also comes highly recommended okay let's talk about the fact that disney is no longer social distancing after over a year being told to stay away from other people it can be kind of shocking to step foot into a crowded theme park where social distancing guidelines are gone disney world has stopped leaving extra space between guests on rides and it was uncomfortable for me you'll be loaded onto rides right next to strangers and it feels really weird so imagine yourself on splash mountain you haven't been next to anybody except like your immediate family for a year and a half and all of a sudden you're sitting right next to some dude very very strange safety reasons aside i loved having all that extra personal space in the parks but the days of having your own ride vehicle are over if you didn't know now you know and you can prepare yourself however you need to for getting up close and personal with a bunch of strangers again okay skipper canteen has amazing diy sliders moving on to one of magic kingdom's restaurants and one of our team's low-key favorite restaurants jungle navigation company limited skipper canteen skipper canteen has some amazing secret menu dishes pork skewers and brazilian cheese bread both are very tasty on their own but you can combine them to make some really tasty sliders we here at dfe love a good food hack and this is one of the best i've found lately so just rip open one of those little cheese breads and put in a hunk of that pork and then just dip it in that kind of teriyaki sauce on the pork oh my goodness it is so so so so good just truly delicious and the best part is that's probably your appetizer your entree hasn't even come yet now skipper canteen is also a restaurant that doesn't tend to book up far in advance so you can usually get a last-minute reservation here the menu isn't necessarily what you'd expect from a theme park especially magic kingdom flavors are a little bit more adventurous and there may be some ingredients you haven't heard of before but everything i've tried has been very very tasty and they have decent portions even if you don't want a full meal pop in for some ac and those diy sliders but remember their secret menu items you have to order them knowing about them they won't be on your menu we're gonna head over to tony's town square from skipper canteen and poor tony's town square in magic kingdom this restaurant always makes the list of worst reviewed least favorite places in disney world whether we make the list or our readers do tony's is kind of like olive garden if olive garden were a little bit worse and were themed after lady and the since this place always gets a bad rap and because we here at dfb visit restaurants again and again to give you updated reviews i want to check it out again and i can report back that tony's is still tony's and i'm super sad about it because i really really really wanted to love it i wanted to go and enjoy it and tell everybody that they're wrong but i couldn't so if you're craving pasta and need somewhere to sit down and eat with some air conditioning in magic kingdom it'll do but know that the food is not going to be the best the spinach dip is literally just their alfredo sauce with a few spinach leaves in it not bad per se but not really what you've expected or even what you really wanted when you order it as long as your expectations are tempered that you won't be getting authentic or very great italian dishes here you'll be happy and fed or at least you'll be fed all right another thing i learned in disney world time really really flies in disney world if you've been before i'm sure you know this but i knew it too and it still hit me like a ton of bricks a week seems like a lot of vacation time but somehow it's already day five and wait you didn't get nearly enough stuff done i was there for five days on my last trip and did not accomplish even half of my goals between unexpected lines impromptu detours and all that unaccounted for time spent grabbing one last thing before you leave the room or stopping for an extra dole whip or running into your favorite character in a pop-up meet and greet plan for some flexibility just because things don't go according to plan that doesn't mean something bad has happened there are plenty of good and fun diversions that might add 10 minutes here or 25 there that are so totally worth going off your original plans to fit it in but leave some time to be spontaneous leave room for flexibility give yourself a few hours here and there or a whole day to just do whatever comes up my original goal i arrived at disney world on tuesday and i said i'm gonna go to epcot and ride spaceship earth and then i got pulled away and pulled away and pulled away and by saturday when i was boarding the plane to leave i had never actually ridden spaceship earth that will happen to you you won't even see it coming so be prepared be flexible and build some extra time in just to relax and try to tack on some time your last day to go back and do the things you missed didn't make it to big thunder mountain railroad on your magic kingdom day if you leave a day at the end of your trip to fit in any unaccomplished goals you can still fit it in if you managed to get everything done you wanted you have that extra day to go back and do your favorites again now speaking of something else we talk about all the time but again it hit me like a ton of bricks this recent trip dehydration is real and i know we talk about it all the time and i know i tell you to drink water and i know i tell myself to drink water it is serious if you get dehydrated you feel so so so rotten um your head is just pounding you're tired you're exhausted panic attacks start to set in it is not good and dehydration can affect you even if you know all the right things to do so know the signs you're feeling thirsty obviously you've dry mouth dry skin feeling dizzy or nauseous feeling tired beyond what a normal disney park day will cause i literally on the second to last day of my trip i had two meetings scheduled and i set an alarm for 14 minutes between the meetings to sleep for 14 minutes literally just slept for 14 minutes that's how exhausted i was and i know it was because of dehydration so get out of the sun take lots of breaks it's hot in orlando until well until october you may be coming from somewhere where you already need to wear a jacket but i promise it will still be hot enough to get dehydrated or suffer from heat exhaustion even when the holiday decorations start going up in the parks so drink lots of water supplement it with electrolyte drinks pack some gatorade or those powder packets like liquid iv for a quick salt sugar and electrolyte boost in the middle of the day even if it's not hot in the parks you're walking a ton eating a lot of sugar you're eating a bunch of stuff you're not used to your body's not used to and you're messing with your sleep schedule so even if you're used to long physically active days believe me i walk 20 000 steps at home every single day on my treadmill desk but don't push yourself too hard because one day of dehydration can completely destroy your trip okay next we're going to talk about a little something that i know we have a little controversy around and that is the gaston's tavern cinnamon rolls in magic kingdom i really like these and yeah they're not mickey shaped like the ones sold at main street bakery acoustic fury but lately the ones at guesthouse have been better several of our reporters have noticed the colossal mickey cinnamon rolls have seemed a little stale or not just quite as good lately but that gaston cinnamon roll it holds up i know some of you have had less than stellar cinnamon rolls from there but by and large the food from gaston's tavern is consistently good which is pretty much the highest praise a disney restaurant can get because you know what i say the only consistent thing about disney restaurants is that they're inconsistent now these are the closest to the original cinnamon roll sold at main street bakery back before it was starbucks and you can request extra icing always request extra icing we even have a step-by-step recipe to make these at home if you won't be in the park soon to have one we'll drop the link below this video in the description but the important thing for you to know is i went back i got it again i wanted to make sure that i wasn't just dreaming that this is a really really good snack because i know a lot of you have said that it's really dry and you know that it's tasteless or whatever i loved it i truly loved it i enjoyed it and i i don't know maybe it's just me maybe i got a you know different taste buds than everybody else but i thought it was great i did not think it was dry especially with all that extra icing so it still holds up for me okay next thing i want to make sure you guys are aware of and we're actually going to have a video coming up with this in it soon is that mitsukoshi is the best store in disney world now the mitsukoshi store in epcot's japan pavilion remains the very best place to shop in all of disney world i'm going to say it you can find everything in that massive store mitsukoshi is actually a japanese department store i think like macy's or nordstrom but in disney world it's where you'll find loads of toys kitchen goods snacks and so much more chopsticks in a carrying case yes i bought them sake bar in the back gudetama merch pocket camp merch unique gifts for friends the nicest cast members ever fun food this place has it all i actually used to buy clothing here and i'd wear it to super fancy schmancy meetings at the four seasons in new york city when i was living and working there and people would always say oh i love that jacket where did you get that and i'm like disney world and i think they thought i was crazy but i did that's where i got it at mitsukoshi i used to buy purses there oh man it was so cool and nobody else in the city had those right um anyway it's it still holds up that's a great store especially if you're going before the holidays you need to buy gifts for people that's a great place to buy gifts now even if you're not really into shopping leave yourself enough time to explore the store a little bit and save some money for it okay i'm gonna say it disney toilet paper is the worst all right it's another kind of fussy problem but hey i'm paying lots of money every night to stay in a disney hotel and for some reason that still means the legit worst one ply if you're lucky toilet paper this goes for every category of hotel too you'd think that maybe at the deluxe resorts that are supposed to be on par with the four seasons or other fancy-schmancy hotel chain that there might be some two-ply in the bathroom but no it's something i forget about every time until i check into my room so this is your psa to add toilet paper to your grocery delivery order if you're picky about that sort of thing i am not that picky i did not order toilet paper i used what was in there but it's not great toilet paper all right next i want to talk about nomad lounge honestly no mad lounge in disney's animal kingdom is the place to be anytime but it's really the best spot when it's pouring rain i went there one night when the heavens opened up and there was just pouring pouring pouring pouring pouring rain and it was the most relaxing thing i've ever experienced get a seat out on that covered patio overlooking the waterways and animal kingdom it's atmospheric perfection then when you're done and the rain stops you're right by the entrance to pandora to hop in line for flight of passage once everyone else has gotten soaked and run back to their hotel for a change of clothes win win all right let's talk about hotel rooms again specifically the hotel room television stacey has been replaced stacy has officially retired from must do disney that show that would play on a constant loop in your hotel room where stacy would show you all the latest and greatest stuff happening in disney world and she would come back every few years to film new segments that would get smashed together and somehow no matter how many times you've seen it or how much you already know about disney world you just couldn't turn it off even if it's 2am and you really need to sleep before trying to get your rest at the resistance boarding pass in the morning and when your five-year-old tells you that you really really should go to the margarita stand in disney springs because stacey said it was a really great place i agree i mean he's he's right my five-year-old is right the margarita place in disney springs is great anyway stacy's magnetic and hypnotic pull has been replaced by another must-do disney show that's not as entertaining but i guess it is easier for disney to change because there isn't an actual person on it heads up if you like me found yourself gravitating to that channel it's no longer there but at least we can pull ourselves away from the tv to go experience test track for ourselves instead of watching stacey do it instead of us doing it right that that makes sense okay let's talk masks now i know you know about this rule you watch our videos here on dfb guide and subscribe to our newsletter if you don't you should but if you miss the memo or just kind of let it slip your mind or like me know that masks are required on indoor rides but still kind of forget until you're getting in line because mask rules vary from place to place and ride to ride depending on the situation it's confusing and with so many people coming from different parts of the country that have different rules around mask wearing you're either backtracking from what the rules are at home or you've got to follow more rules than you're used to in your day-to-day life masks are still required on indoor rides and in indoor queues but for outdoor rides those masks are optional basically if you go inside at disney world shops restaurants and clothes transportation you need a mask so continue to pack several different kinds and bring accessories i love mask chains masks are on off on off all day and this keeps you from dropping them on the ground adjustable ear strap add-ons elastic straps with adjustable beads already loaded on just tie the extension strap onto your current mask it becomes a lot more comfortable and as always rules are changing all the time so stay up to date on what disney's doing during your trip and probably bring some backup masks in case things change again you'll often only have a day or two notice that rules are changing and you don't want to have to buy a bunch of new masks while you're already on vacation when you probably have piles of them at home but i can't say enough about that mask chain i use it constantly non-stop and i even use it here at home when i go to the grocery store etc always always use your mask chain in disney world it helps so much okay and finally if you weren't aware disney world does not have plastic straws anywhere you'll mostly find those paper straws that start to disintegrate in your drink unless you finish it really fast sometimes if you're lucky you'll find some sugar cane or slightly sturdier straws but it's not that common now i've long been preaching bringing your own reusable straws silicone or metal straws but i found a new favorite i ordered marine biodegradable straws on amazon and they were awesome obviously reusable straws are best but it can be difficult to clean them every day in disney world and these straws are made from fermented canola oil sounds weird but i promise you won't notice anything weird while using them and our soil and marine biodegradable within a couple of months and since they feel like plastic they don't get soggy like paper straws making them a lot more enjoyable to use i brought a bunch of these i loved using them i also have my reusable straws with me but if i've already used it that day and i didn't get a chance to go clean it then i use these marine biodegradable straws and they're super cool so there you have it all the things i learned from my trip to disney world two weeks ago i love sharing this kind of stuff with you guys because i'm always learning something new or discovering something that might help someone else have a better trip and that's
