hey guys welcome back to the channel this is Caitlin and welcome to my handy hand blender tutorial pun intended we're gonna model rig and briefly animate this hand you see right here so if you'd like to see the method I use below the blender and follow [Music] so the first thing I'm going to do is select o star cube tab into edit mode press a to make sure we select all the vertices and press M Art Center to merge all the vertices to a center point this will give us one nice vertices to work with and we're gonna give it two modifiers the first is a skin modifier and then the second is a subdivision surface modifier make sure to add them in that order otherwise if we do the subdivision first then it won't take effect because of course there'd be no skin modifier so go down and make sure that they are selected in that order and then what I'm going to do is scale up this skin a little bit if you press s this won't take effect on a vertice we need to press ctrl a to scale this up because this affects our skin modifier and then I'm gonna go into front view mode and we're gonna create the forearm to our mock-up so I'm gonna press e Z to extrude this up and I'm gonna keep this quite stylized so I'm gonna press ctrl a to scale this up to really fatten this up a little bit and then what we're gonna need to do is select our bottom vertex here and click mark root and you can see this outline here which shows you that this is the root of the extrusion here and then what we're gonna do is move on to two in the wrist and then the palm of the hand so I'm gonna extrude this up a little bit just to give a little bit of room for what would be the start of the hand and you can actually press alt Z to go into x-ray mode and we can get a good little out good little view here of the sort of Skellington of our hand so from here we're gonna do the palm and our palm is made up of our fingers and our thumb all together inside that little area so I'm going to initially mark this point as a loose and then we're gonna extrude out five digits so I'm gonna do the thumb and then I'm gonna do our first finger second third and our fourth I know I know it looks really strange at first but imagine this is our palm from what we can do is select all these ctrl a and just bring these down and now again a bit more of a palm shape but of course we do need the rest of our digits so I'm gonna go over here give ourselves a thump come up here get ourselves some fingers and let's do the same all the way around and now it looks strange still but we have much more of a general hand shape coming along so all we'll need to do to help this along is to select all of our digits here ctrl a and just bring down the scale a little bit and now you can see some of these are really again on top of each other so what I'm going to do is go into edge mode select each one of these right-click and subdivide then back into vertice mode we've got just you know quite a few extra points that we can utilize here so I'm going to just move these around make sure you are in the front view mode I'm going to move these around making sure that I give them enough space in so that they don't have this overlapping issue but also just trying to recreate a more natural hand shape and increase in and decrease in the size of your fingers and your proportions until you are happy because you might have a general style you try to go for where as I liked for these more chunky stylized style of hands you okay so I'm generally happy with the general form of this hand here for the purpose of this tutorial you can really play around with it as much as you like until you get a nice shape that's maybe a bit more accurate or a real hand but I'm happy with this one for now and so what I'm going to do next is just apply our skin which you've selected your object apply the skin and then apply the subdivision surface modifier and now a new time into this it's a complete mesh and of course we don't want it this low-poly so I'm going to go into modifiers and add another subdivision surface modifier I'm not going to apply this one just yet but I will come into my design right click and shade this smooth and the next thing I'm going to do is to perhaps add in some textures so I'm just gonna call this skin come into our material preview so we can actually see the materials in use and just give this a bit of a cartoony pinky color something like Family Guy perhaps or maybe you wanted something like The Simpsons or maybe you wanted something a bit more realistic I'm going to increase my roughness because I don't want too much shine on this design I like to get that soft to the touch look and then I think what I do want to add is a some sort of clothing to go on top here so I'm gonna go into edit mode on our object here I'm gonna go back in the front view I'm gonna go press 3 to select faces alt Z go into XA mode to make sure we select both the front and back faces drag over here and then I'm gonna press shift D to duplicate right click to leave this in place and then press P selection to make this a loose part that we can select underneath here I'm going to press forward slash to isolate this object back in a to edit mode on this object plus one to go into vertice mode make sure you're looking at it from a direct on side so I'm just gonna go in the front mode highlight all of these making sure you're in x-ray mode and then with all those top vertices selected press s Z and 0 now this will give us a nice flat surface and if we press forward slash again to bring back our hand I'm going to click on our sleeve here let's call it so I'm going to double click and call this sleeve and we're gonna add a solidify modifier I'm gonna change the offset to 0 to make sure it extrudes outside of our current hand and increase the thickness to around point to maybe and then we're gonna need a new color for this so let's go back into materials plus and call this sleeve then give it a new color I'm gonna have to delete the skin so click on it and press - and then we can see with the shade smooth is effect in this young we lose in that identify and identification of the edge so come in to our object properties down here and go into normals and auto smooth and now we can really see this layer here and that does it for part one of my handy hand blender tutorial series in part two we add a basic rig and animation to our hand here so if you're interested in that go ahead and click onto the next video now if not go ahead leave a like subscribe if you interested in seeing some more of my content in the future but until then have a nice day and I'll see you in the next one [Music]
