christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever a reading from the acts of the apostles peter proceeded to speak and said you know what has happened all over judea beginning in galilee after the baptism that john preached how god anointed jesus of nazareth with the holy spirit and power he went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil for god was with him we are witnesses of all that he did both in the country of the jews and in jerusalem they put him to death by hanging him on a tree this man god raised on the third day and granted that he be visible not to all the people but to us the witnesses chosen by god in advance who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead he commissioned us to preach to the people and testify that he is the one appointed by god as judge of the living and the dead to him all the prophets bear witness that everyone who believes in him will receive forgiveness of sins through his name the word of the lord thanks be to god this is the day the lord has made let us rejoice and be glad this is the day the lord has made let us rejoice [Music] give thanks to the with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to john glory to you lord there you go on the first day of the week mary of magdala came to the tomb early in the morning while it was still dark and saw the stone removed from the tomb so she ran and went to simon peter and to the other disciple whom jesus loved and told them they have taken the lord from the tomb and we don't know where they put him so peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb they both ran but the other disciple ran faster than peter and arrived at the tomb first he bent down and saw the burial cloths there but did not go in when simon peter arrived after him he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there and the cloth that had covered his head not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place then the other disciple also went in the one who had arrived at the tomb first and he saw and believed for they did not yet understand the scripture that he had to rise from the dead the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ [Music] [Music] a renewed blessed easter folks and a renewed welcome to st patrick's cathedral america's parish church uh i'm also gratefully aware of those who united with us in worship this pascal morning we've got people at the catholic channel siriusxm 129 our live streaming the catholic faith network and our good friends at pix11 who are broadcasting this throughout the nation if um so we got a lot of coverage if my ratings are higher than the holy fathers well next year my easter mass might be in timbuktu who knows all right who is the most influential person in your life the reporter asked me that a couple years back and i remember it well who is the most influential person in your life easy i replied jesus christ jesus christ my lord and savior the way the truth and the life my best friend no fair no fair she answered i mean the most influential person in your life who is living right now who's that easy i said jesus christ my lord and savior the way the truth and the life and that that my friends is the act of faith that we profess this joyful easter morning because our god is alive present active with us here and now our jewish neighbors who completed their celebration of passover last night referred to him as the god of abraham isaac and jacob and my my rabbi friends tell me that's their ancient way see of professing that he's the lord of every age every generation he is always with us he is alive and this paschal morning we shout alleluia praise god because even death a hideous death on a cross could not stop him even a even a boulder in front of a borrowed tomb could not keep him locked away uh-uh you see look at it this way all of our fears our tears our hurts our tragedies our heartaches our suffering our worries can be summed up if you think about it in one word and that one word is death death dying can seem the ultimate failure we we can postpone it we can ignore it we can run away from it or deny it we can put it off but we can't escape it and death from a purely worldly point of view see death seems to uh eclipse all the promise and hope and beauty of the radiant gift of life that we so cherish it appears death does it appears to be the ultimate negation that anvil that's always dangling over us posing the riddle that nags us has nagged the human project all our days is this all there is all the joy and the love and the light of life is it um is it just passing is it just a tease it is is it a charade that will one day bluntly and bleakly come to an end and leave us empty nothing never uh never was that haunting question more dramatically asked than on that first good friday on a hill called calvary where one named jesus who personified love and truth and hope and faith and life all our dreams and noble yearnings was crushed and beaten by hate and lies despair doubt death perhaps it is all just a game and we've lost his followers wondered even the sun hid in sadness and the earth in sobbing remember oh boy but not this easter morning that friday afternoon did not have the last word this sunday morning did and it is morning in his creation the tomb is empty the rock has been rolled away that cross has been crossed out it is spring not winter and we pass over from darkness to light from death to life jesus passed over from the cross to the resurrection and he invites us to come along with him this this is the day the lord has made let us rejoice and be glad in it he has risen as he said alleluia alleluia why look for the living among the dead those angels asked that first easter morning i am with you all days even to the end of the world jesus reassures us the god of abraham isaac jacob and jesus my brothers my brothers and sisters my brothers and sisters through the paschal mystery through the passover mystery through the easter mystery we have been buried with christ in baptism so that we may walk with him in newness of life and now that our 40 days of lenten observance is concluded we renew the promises of holy baptism by which we once renounce satan and his works and promised to serve god in the one holy catholic and apostolic church and so i ask all of you this easter morning do you renounce satan i do and all his works and all his empty promises do you believe in god the father almighty creator of heaven and earth do you believe in jesus christ his only son our lord who was born of the virgin mary suffered death and was buried rose from the dead and is now seated at the right hand of the father do you believe in the holy spirit the holy catholic church the communion of saints the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body and life everlasting may almighty god the father of our lord and savior jesus christ who has given us new birth by water and the holy spirit and bestowed on us the forgiveness of our sins keep us by his grace in christ jesus our lord for eternal life amen are those [Music] oh [Music] is [Music] oh [Music] and [Music] oh [Music] is [Music] let us pray for the church that we may proclaim the risen lord in word and action giving hope to those in despair and new life to those who suffer let us pray to the lord that the peace of the risen lord may reign in our hearts our families our communities and every nation in the world we pray to the lord lord throughout the world that their new life in the lord may bring new life to the church and the world around them we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that we not forget the practices we committed ourselves to performing during lent and continue our commitment to prayer almsgiving and good works throughout our lives let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all of us here celebrating the resurrection of our lord that we may bring joy and love to our family members friends and neighbors we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all our beloved dead that they may enjoy the fullness of eternal life let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we seek the intercession this easter morning of those who were first at the empty tomb our joyful mother mary saint mary magdalene and the holy women and peter and john as we make these and all of our prayers through christ our lord amen [Music] [Applause] [Music] please [Music] oh oh [Music] hallelujah [Music] please join in singing our hymn christ the lord is risen today in your program [Music] right [Music] is [Music] is [Music] is [Music] now my brothers and sisters pray that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god our almighty father may the lord exultant with paschal gladness oh lord we offer the sacrifice by which your church is wondrously reborn and nourished through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation at all times to acclaim you o lord but on this morning above all to lodge you yet more gloriously when christ our passover has been sacrificed for he is the true lamb who has taken away the sins of the world by dying he has destroyed our death by rising restored our life therefore overcome with paschal joy every land every people exults in your praise even the heavenly powers with the angelic hosts and all the saints sing together the unending hymn of your glory as they acclaim [Music] oh [Music] is [Music] yes [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you in need of it for this is my body which will be given up for you [Music] in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] is [Music] therefore as we celebrate this memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you've held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and timothy our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection that all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever [Music] martial [Music] is
