hello welcome to another episode of tile coach I'm Isaac Ostrom I'm a licensed tile contractor here in Northern California thank you for watching other one of my videos well today I'm gonna be showing you how to cut a tile around a toilet opening now this is a pretty common question that I get asked because it requires cutting a fairly large sized round hole but I just used my Makita grinder and it makes it a lot easier and faster you can today I'm going to be using a Makita grinder zmei four and a half inch Makita grinder this one is not variable-speed this is just a high speed grinder it operates at about ten to twelve thousand rpms it does really well cutting through any kind of tile but it's not used for polishing any kind of cutting tile this grinder is great the makita is just what I've always used it is fairly cheap probably 60 70 dollars and it's a tool that I think every tile guy or home-improvement type person should have what I have on here is a four and a half inch pearl abrasives p.4 blade this is a mesh type blade it has a diamond mesh rim on it and has become really popular so basically you have two different types of cutting wheels for this you get a mesh diamond like the p4 or you can just get a regular regular cutting wheel this one here is a cyclone these are great for cutting straight but the mesh rim blades are good for cutting around things because they have a large row of diamonds you can actually cut into something because this part of the blade will cut as well these ones not so much so if you're gonna be doing a lot of cuts I highly recommend them so that's the blade I'm gonna be using let's get going to other tools you're going to need are a framing square and a speed square these are two tools everybody should have if you're again even if you're a homeowner I would recommend having these they're very handy to have what I do I'm just doing a mock layout so I marked a line here that's a square line I'm just pretending that's where my tile is going to go line up right here you can use your framing square usually when you're working around a toilet this is a really tight area you might have a cabinet here a tub here it gets really tight so sometimes you can't fit all your tiles in you'll want to have this framing square so you know where your grout joint is gonna end up especially if this is a broken bond pattern and I'm gonna go to the widest parts of the closet flange and I'm gonna mark out about 1/8 inch to the outside of it you want a little bit of wiggle room don't cut up super tight to this I'm gonna do the same thing over here line up my tile make sure it's square with the pattern here and I'm gonna mark eighth inch wide on that so basically I have two marks here I have two marks here I'm gonna take this square I can either my seat square if I want I'm just gonna mark two two lines and I'm gonna mark two more since my speed square won't reach I'll use my framing square you can see I have a nice outline where that deposit flange is gonna go the closet flanges are 7 inches and so I am about seven and a quarter cuz that's gonna give me an eighth inch on either side so I got seven and a quarter by seven and a quarter the first way I'm going to do it I'm gonna do an octagon pattern I'll show you how I do that very quickly I'm gonna take a measurement of two and three-quarter inches and I'm going to mark two and three quarters it's gonna make a nice mark right here at 2 and 3/4 is that 2 and 3/4 this Sharpie mark 2 and 3/4 here off the diagonal don't measure it off with a square part measure it off of the diagonal now what I'm gonna do is I'm going to lay this line up with the mark so what that's gonna do is that's gonna make this little leg two and three triggers right here now I'm just gonna do that along the rest of two and three quarters and that's why I like to have my lawn lawn because if my lines are long I can put my speed square right in there like that line it up here two and three quarters right there and now I'm just gonna go around doing 3/4 right there now we have an octagon and they are all at two and three quarters or they should be very close again explaining it takes a little longer this would have been really fast if I would have just done it okay so before I start safety glasses I got this respirator I really like these these neoprene dust masks I really like them check them out if you want them I'm not here to promote anything one thing I like about these grinders the makita's you know the dEWALT's have a click and hold switch [Music] there's nothing you have to hold you can turn it on in a wants to stay you also see I have the guard removed that's just the way I've always had it keep the guard on that's my advice it's one of those do as I say not as I do things but at least I got a dust mask on right and ear protection [Music] okay so I got a really nice octagon cut here it only took me a minute and 45 seconds to cut this let me show you how it looks so you can see I got a beautiful nice cut that's in tight and even though it's not a circle every part of the toilet is gonna cover that for sure you could even go a little wider than that if you want but I have my nice little 8 inch gaps in case you have a little bit of clay that you need but everything lined up really nice so one of the questions I get is why wouldn't you cut a nice perfect circle around this well for one the toilets going to cover and the toilets usually cover about from the bolts you usually have about an inch and a quarter so the toilet is going to cover all this the backs of the toilet go really far and then obviously the front of the toilet you got plenty but people say well you might get water in these cracks but here's the thing I'll show you how the wax ring fits on so the wax ring fits like this so even if you have these gaps here water would get in beat into the gaps that are in the actual closet flange itself water would go down here before it would go out here so if you have a leaky toilet the water is going to leak down over the seal into here so it doesn't really matter if you want you could always grout this in it really doesn't matter okay so maybe you really want to make a circle cut well you can still do that with the p4 blade it's actually fairly simple to do and I actually want to see how much longer it takes if we want to do a perfect circle so let me show you how to mark the circle cut I got a nice little trick that'll make it faster and let's see what the difference is in cutting a circle as opposed to cutting an octagon particularly gonna do the same thing that I did as far as my layout so I'm going to go about 1/8 inch wide the widest part strong eighth inch I'm going to come back up here I'm going to line up with this square line here and I'm gonna mark 8 inch strong on this side same thing real simple real simple marks take my framing square and this is a nice porcelain tile it's a it's an Italian porcelain and so I'm not cutting a soft file so okay so here comes the trick remember I said this was seven and a quarter or box we're seven and a quarter because the closet flange is seven and we want an eighth inch on both sides well check this out a skill saw blade is seven and a quarter so that's a beautiful thing you can just set it and Center it and then you can use it as a gauge it's not a perfect circle but it's gonna work you're gonna see where the outside is so now I got a nice little circle here seven and a quarter perfect dimensions that I need and let's cut it let's see how long it takes okay so I I cut a nice nice circle cut but I forgot to hit record that happens sometimes so I'm gonna do it again and show you so pay attention to how I have to use the blade at an angle like this and go around and go into that's why this mesh rim is really helpful you need one of these blades if you're gonna well I shouldn't say you need it but it's gonna be a lot easier if you use one of these p4 blades to get in like this okay here we go so I'm going to time it [Music] [Music] [Music] all right so you've got my nice circle cut here the circle cut took three minutes and 50 seconds the octagon cut took a minute and 45 seconds so about two minutes difference you guys be the judge you tell me if you think the circle cuts worth it leave your comments in the section below or if you can save a couple minutes and it's also the straight cuts are just so easy I mean it's like I know I was using the vacuum so it put me in kind of awkward positions doing the circle cut but but it was so much easier to do the straight lines it just buzzed right through that porcelain like it was butter when you're when you're cutting the circle it's kind of torquing the blade you happen to put kind of a lot of pressure and hold it down making sure it doesn't skip off and and so this the circle can definitely be done but if it's gonna be covered up by a toilet is it worth it I don't know you guys tell me so here's our circle cut you can see it's really nice cut in with a good strong eighth through inch all the way around that case you had to adjust your layout just a little bit you never want to cut these in tight always leave yourself a little bit of play around there so so whether you go with this or you go with this it doesn't really matter it's gonna do the same thing when the toilet goes over it you're never gonna see it but if you like to look at this hey it's just gonna take you a couple more minutes a little bit more work whether it's a circle whether it's the octagon you decide leave your comment in the section below I'd love to hear what you think thank you for watching this video I love having you here this community that we're building is absolutely amazing the outpouring of support that we had last week for Little Bo and the shower absolutely blew me away we've raised enough money we hit our goal we're actually going to be able to build them a was going to the university I was just going there because everybody thought I should go there and I thought I was a loser if I didn't graduate from college to think I went from that place to finding the tile industry actually the tile industry found me and it's grown into this beautiful thing and now you're along for the journey and so I just want to encourage you if you're in that place there is hope talk to someone leave your comment in the section below start networking with other people in the trades find somebody who has what you want there's plenty of good builders out there there's plenty of good contractors there's plenty of good tile guys who need good help and who are willing to teach and show you all of the tricks that they've learned so that you don't have to make the mistakes for yourself so before I go I got to say something I love you I love being your tile coach and we'll see you on the next video
