hello I'm Isaac Ostrom thanks for checking out another one of my videos today I'm privileged to be here with Chris he's a homeowner who started to do his own project he started to build a shower and ran into some trouble and then he called me so work down here to finish what he started Chris he made some good headway there's some things you did really well there's some things that probably weren't done so well but it's that's really common I mean there's a lot more to it as you've probably found out and you you can learn so much from videos like mine you'd also watch some of the sales videos right yeah and and check sales videos out sell the boss he's got a great channel if you want to learn stuff he's got a great content on there I think you had said that he you watched his video on floating the pan yeah so we're gonna start out with the positives the pan you did is really good I mean I check it out I put levels on it it's got correct slope its waterproofed well and looks really good but Chris why don't you tell us a little bit about kind of where you started to see some issues yeah so I was trying to just get the plumbing in so I started you know probably the middle of what was I should know that more start lower but anyway as I was going up I was using leveling systems but it's just not level it's just so hard to do for me on tile so that brings up a good point so just because you have leveling spacers doesn't mean it's gonna make everything really easy and sorry to plump for it that's great yeah I mean it was I mean I would do maybe two rows at night or something after my day job and it was just painful and so we got plumbing in and we moved in and it's been about a year ok and that was I found you on YouTube I was watching you and salad gear up to try to finish it yeah and I saw where you were located like hey wait a minute yeah it's not too far let's just get it didn't do the job right so yes that's how I reached out to you the leveling clips it look like you had a hard time getting it off so yeah you can see that kind of got broken off inside which is which is you know one of the things about leveling clips that a lot of people don't know about is how hard it is to to get them out if you have a little bit of thin-set and in them they'll break off and then you're trying to score them out and with marble as you can see even got a couple little scratches it's really hard to get them out the other a razor knife or a buzz tool or something especially if it's marble so neither chip in this title yeah and then you also had a bow in this wall right yeah so we'll get the Lugg lot we'll see what that looks like but yeah if you have leveling Clips that's not gonna make everything perfectly flat the plumb it's just gonna basically keep the tiles that are next to each other on plane with zero lip itch but that could still have the wall doing all sorts of funky things also the curb you had mentioned you weren't sure how the curb was constructed right yeah it is it's uh it's two bodies forward and my night works okay and I think there's ply on either side I just can't remember if I put plywood on top yeah cuz that feels a little squishy so we're probably gonna open this up and see see what's under there but yeah we're gonna we're gonna turn this into a beautiful shower for you and we'll take it from here we're actually gonna float the walls we're gonna first we're gonna repair what we need to repair go over everything with ardex 8+9 we're gonna float these walls to get a plumbing flat and then we're gonna install the marbles so yeah you're in good hands now Chris yeah thanks yeah no thank you problem okay so here we go I got I my six and a half foot stability here and if I put this on this wall you're gonna see where he kind of got into trouble so I'm I'm out of plumbing here but you can see I'm press there look how big the gap gets and then if I push down here you can see how big the gap and see how big the gap gets up here so that's that's why I suggested we float the walls because what a lot of people don't realize is that yeah Kirti you don't have to float but you end up fighting it when you're doing the install I would much rather with the prep work get everything plumb and flat and I know what shimming can do that too but even if you wet Chambord and put it up here you got all the band you got all of the everything going on on top of that which throws it back out of plumbing in so let's go over to this wall here and what he did is he got just you've got a ton of layers of Kirti and believe it or not you can end up with a lot of build out there I think we have like almost a quarter inch of build out he's got banned hair corner here overlapping another corner here band here and then a another overlapping sheet so there's a lot going on here and so what were you when we float this wall it's gonna be plumb and flat ready just then set Taiwan he's got city's got some bubbles again this is just build out that it really messes with you when you're selling tile so we were not gonna float these walls this is what we would have been fighting when we were trying to do the install this just it's just not work that this is too much to deal with we're just buttering out thinset you got a nice Steve okay so again I he did this pan himself he did a mud set and I told him I started out with the positives I said you know you did a really good job on the pan teas deck but on the pan got a good water flow he stayed really consistent all the way around look at that I put my level down and again he washed Sal's video and made the perimeter all the way levels that bubbles right in the middle we got good fall we got a good fall going into the drain here so I'm really happy with how he did the pan but what look at what you did on the curve here this was this was one of the red flags right well you know we really need to do something here this curve if I push on it see if you can get it close up of this Steve maybe maybe angle this way so you can see yeah so I don't know if you can see this but I'm actually pushing down on the top of the curb so the top of the curb is really squishy we have a few spots [Music] yeah everything's here we're just only taking about five more minutes okay so need that dense shield thank you oh yeah and that she'll champion thank you so Steve let me show this so so here here's a really critical part of the waterproofing which which I don't think he did a very good job on we got loose kirti here the big Kirti bubble here so there's no coverage under that and so I'm gonna chill this up and see what we got under here looks like he's good is that kerdi-board on there okay so yeah maybe used kerdi-board I don't know why it feels so soft though see look at that movement that we have in here so let's see let's see what's going on underneath here so it's just half-inch kerdi-board but I would not trust this for the top of a curve and it's probably what caused the bubbles to come up and everything when things are moving around like that and squishy [Applause] it's just half-inch kerdi-board but look how much compression kerdi-board has I really think they need to fix their their board has just had so much flex in it I'm gonna try to get a cross-section so it looks like he's got a would curve and he went over it with Kirti right to the wood which you can't do you can't put Kirti right on on two by fours it has to be drywall or cement board yes Steve a few if you get a get a view of this right here this angle right here you can see the the compression in this board a little bit better cross-section so this is how much give is in that board just not that good where things are gonna be stepping and things are gonna be drilled into this is not good so what we're gonna do we'll take this off Steve to take the top off we'll put our dent shield on here and then we'll wrap Kirti back up over it so that we have a good solid surface not this not this foam so there you have it stay tuned for the next video we're gonna show you how we put this thing back together if you don't like your job if you feel like your job is constricting you if you're not allowed to be creative if you're not allowed to build maybe you need to get into the building trades if you know somebody who doesn't like their job share this video with them thanks again for watching guys rock on I love you I love being your tile coach see y'all next video
