it's time for spoiler talk with Dune part two and I'm excited there's so much for us to go over not only the incredibly cool things that happen in the movie but the meeting behind them because Dune es I think especially part two is an intellectual Blockbuster part one you know I enjoyed aspects of part one quite a bit but this one is this is I as I said before this is the Batman Begins to Dark Knight blow up and some of you like to be contrarian by the way and be like oh I preferred Batman Begins and that's awesome you do you but pretty much everybody on the face of the Earth preferred The Dark Knight all right so in fact I wrote my notes for this spoiler review while listening to the Dune Part Two soundtrack already available and it was quite the thrilling experience that Han Zimmer boy when he cooks he's still The Goat in fact this is a whole movie of goats some of them are baby goats just getting started but goats none n theless that's really a good way to describe Dune part two goat the movie uh I'm as I said I'm excited to discuss this with you so yes welcome to my spoiler review for Dune part two and where I want to start is with the things that I liked most about the second film The Incredible action sequences and the evolution of paulat Trades into in my opinion a very memorable Hollywood sci-fi character I know some of you have already been on the Pol fr's train for quite a while cuz you've read the books Etc but for many of us this is our first introduction to the character and so when you guys made a big deal about him in the first movie I think a lot of us were like I like Timothy shalam and he looks you know his hair certainly is you know uh you know very wavy in the wind but you know it's pretty good uh however now I'm like yes Paul L trates is I think one of the great sci-fi characters uh in the movie space and I think that's that's certainly an important um accomplishment all right so let's talk action sequences there are several throughout the movie that are not only thrilling but High art it's as if Anna wintor the Met Gala has has action sequences right I mean that's perfect that's actually the perfect way to describe Dune part two so the first one of course is at the very beginning of the movie The hekinan Ambush so when the film started I was a little bit concerned it would be more of just the same like you know I respected Dune but you know Dune part one but it hadn't captured my heart but when the hekken and soldiers activated their anti-gravity devices and then like poetically floated to the top of the Rocks I was captivated and I love the choice to not have them rock it to the top like so many other science fiction characters have done before right you know because there's a lot of people using jetpacks but this floating idea that was really nice it gave the action sequence b b like elements like a ballet I think that was just really smart and then they balanced that out with the the fast and brutal violence that the scene erupted into so you've got these characters uh soldiers floating around but then the laser guided bullets or was it just a laser it happened so fast it was hard to tell and then of course the equally brutal and quick knife attacks from the fman I mean it just made the whole sequence not only stunning to behold but very fresh and unique to the Dune franchise and as I said they were able to balance those elements out and so it allowed the action SC to still have that that Verve that Vigor but yet the Baltic elements slowing it down at points gave it the high art quality as well it's really really impressive all right the Harvester attack wow I was wondering what was going to happen to that alien Mouse I was like be careful Little Mouse I mean I knew that thing coming out of out of the sand that stick was some sort of Predator but I had no idea it was a fman hunting much bigger game than mice oh that was incredible I will always remember that that was a great sequence I love the way that the fman were able to hide under the sand and then pop out of the sand you would think the sand once it kind of like settled over on top of you it would be heavy and you wouldn't be able to pop up like that but I guess they were that close to the surface I mean it's incredible I wonder if anyone will be able to replicate it in real life uh I wonder how they managed to do it on on set is it really just that easy it was just so cool how do you bury yourself just that much beneath the sand but not so little that you can clearly tell there's someone under there I mean it was amazing I never got tired of watching them pop out of the sand this attack though overall was very interesting in many ways so after they popped out of the sand and they did the quick with the knives right I like the way that it played out taking out not just the Harvester but the helicopter you know the gunships that were uh you know um escorting it so this sequence played like classic gorilla Warfare with tactical plans and unit coordination and you know this whole movie while it puts the Sci-Fi like futuristic Twist on everything it really underscores that there are certain Elements of War and engagement and conflict that are constant and I love that stuff I think that's fascinating so they gave a Sci-Fi twist to all this right from the uniforms to the type of weapons used on both sides having to time the rocket attack from the reman to the gunfire because that was the only time that the helicopter the gunship when when the gunship fired was the only time that it let down its uh Shields so that was the only way that a rocket could go in so in order for you to send something in you had to allow something to come out so that was very dangerous but that was great it was really interesting to watch how they how they did that I thought that was fantastic and again the speed of the knife fights was just it continued to be mesmerizing here you know there's a long-standing joke that you don't bring a knife to a a gunfight but I have to say I think the fman could take on any weapon with just a blade they are that skilled I was really really impressed with that all right the next action sequence is riding sandworms ah I didn't get sandworms with the first movie I thought they were just big and gross but in this film seeing how you can ride them instantly I was like ah these are amazing you got something here not only did I think the sequence where Paul learns to ride sandworms was very well done with the music and they put you right in perspective like you were on the sand worm I was like oh this is quite the theatrical cinematic experience but then I like the idea that a whole bunch of people could ride sandworms at once so you don't just use sandworms to go into battle but they're Transportation like a bus in some ways I thought that was really funny and interesting like when they had that shot with the whole group up there and then Reverend mother Jessica uh was in a basket in a wicker basket to protect her from the elements I was like this is amazing I mean I guess there is a lot of surface area on a on a sand worm but it was funny how many people they could get up there I was like this is like really cool I mean to be able to harness that kind of power and speed really did seem intoxicating and I feel if they want to create a dune experience right for theme parks or something riding a sandworm would be a pretty cool uh choice I and I think it would be doable to potentially replicate virtual reality and stuff like that it was cuz they almost almost perfectly replicated it in the theat alone like for anyone who sees this in 4dx or something like that um you might probably get even closer to the experience all right then the Gladiator tournament this one obviously stands out not just not just because it intro introduces a new character but also because it has a very different Visual pallette and that it surprisingly serves as an introduction into hearkening culture ah what till we talk about this so the black and white coloring obviously is a nod to how heinens see the world there is no nuance and violence reign supreme you know very harsh uh you know delineations in a black and white scenario but also we learn that uh fed rala is meant to fight drugged opponents for an easy win so we see that it is a ruthless World filled with propaganda with the baron and his extended family willing to use not just violence but also lies to hold on to power uh which is interesting for a black and white I guess they present things as a black and white that's oh I love that even more it's presented as a black and white scenario but in fact it still is the Sea of gray uh and you have to look closer I think that's really great however of course we discover or fed rala discovers that one of the prisoners is not drugged uh and fed rala realizes that that's his uncle's way of testing him uh you know it could be considered an assassination attempt but I think it you know the bottom line is that if fed rala fails that test he dies and clearly the baron is okay with that because he you know implemented the the test but fed rtha doesn't fail which I think is meant to establish early on that he has genuine fighting skills for when he later takes on Paul I also really liked how they developed a different type of firework for the Harkins like exploding ink I was like that's really neat to think of going that far you know usually it's like look how long fireworks have been around or something like that or they still have fireworks but here you are like oh that's a new one I love it all right and I wonder if you could even try and comp accomplish that in real life it was just so cool uh maybe someday all right family of monsters it's not an action sequence but I want to take a a detour to discuss the Harkins because to me I found this fast I found the whole movie fascinating all right so I felt that in the hearkening scenes uh we Al and also you know like these scenes with the with the with the Gladiator Arena and then the celebration afterwards but also when you include in the brief scenes where you see how the baron and fed rala get there let's say kicks right particularly the screams from The Baron's chamber with everyone horrified waiting to go in and then they rush in because they they feel they can enter and then there's a quick shot of perversely Twisted broken and dead bodies in a corner you can't even tell what gender they are I thought it was very effective you know again a really good example of how less can be so much more uh because you allow the audience to fill in the blanks with their imagination uh but you know you have to set it up just right and and uh Denise uh vov did it perfectly uh so that was amazing and so I felt that we really got a sense throughout all these scenes we got a sense of the hearkening culture sure it was still violently depraved but there began to be a logic to it and I guess it makes sense it makes sense to harmonize the hekinan because Paul learns that he's part hekinan right his mother Jessica in turn it turns out is The Baron's daughter you know because the benages is so uh obsessed with preserving bloodlines you know Jessica was part of that program and she preserved The Baron's bloodline so the heinan might be monsters but they're also family and whatever it is inside the hekinan that makes them the way that they are I believe is what's in Paul and Jessica that makes them so aggressive and ruthless because the Duke certainly didn't have those qualities it's even discussed at the very beginning of the movie when lady Jessica was like your dad didn't believe in in uh revenge and I I think Paul should have been tempted to say like I didn't think he I didn't think he'd ever expect to go out the way he did I think he might believe in Revenge after that uh but still I bet that's part of the reason I think Paul and Jessica are so different from the Duke because of that hekinan uh background you know I think that so that's to me it's also fascinating he's not just part harkening but it factors into the story and his character oh that's great writing then going back to focusing on the action scenes next up the attack on the emperor a Sci-Fi take on again a tale as old as time with a huge civilization feeling that they're superior to the Guerilla Warfare warfare fighters they're going up against uh but it turns out they're not only slower to move and hampered by tradition but the Guerilla Fighters at the end at the end of the day simply wanted more orderliness versus chaos perfectly visualized by having the emperor's troops in formation coming face to face with the fman riding those sand worms Oh that was amazing I thought that was great I'm amazed that some of the emperor's troops still stood and fought after that I'd be like they've got they got sand worms I mean forget it nobody told me there were sandworms involved in this I'm going home and then of course on top of that they not only had sandworms but Atomic Warheads uh which I guess by the way don't expel too much radiation because they were still fighting pretty close to where they went off but again A Tale As Old As Time who has the most Firepower who has the most advanced weaponry and I guess you know obviously the emperor and his Force felt that they did and technically the WarHeads are theirs you know from their school of thought but I guess the sandworm is kind of like you know don't discount the power of like Earth and history like you you know you're a civilization but how about the history of this planet and just as long as there's been life on it oh that's also fascinating oh that's also really great that's another great element and dynamic that's at play here uh but again uh you know the reason that Paul has the uh War uh the IC Warheads is because gurnie knows where house at trates hid their nuclear Arsenal uh so Paul trates is able to use it with the fman uh you know the emperor and the hekinan weren't able to claim that those Warheads for themselves unfortunately Hollywood has often portrayed outside forces uh unless the Americans are those outside forces as you know quote unquote less than and what makes Dune part two so interesting to me is that when paulit trades strides into the emperor's throne room his face covered yet still and perhaps because of that mystery he still radiates leadership power and myth myth can be so so powerful on its own as this movie shows uh and you could instantly tell that this man and his fman forces were formidable and definitely worthy of not just taking on the emperor but worthy of defeating him they the ma the fact that they made these the orderliness versus the chaos the the the large immobile civilization versus the you know the very you know light on their feet gorilla warfar warfare fighters the fact they were able to make these two Force to seem equal if not maybe you know you know it was you know was depending on the circumstances who would win out that was I think something very fresh to see in popular culture so I thought that was incredible and also of course when Paul killed the baron again so quickly so calmly so matter of fact a Monster who up till that point had seemed bigger than life even after the emperor had tried to kill him and the baron was you know climbing up the stairs he still seemed like this monster who just could not die but yet Paul who had also turned himself into a myth killed the myth of the baron right because he was able to kill him so intimately calling him grandfather taking the mystery out of him that he wasn't this monster who was just literally floating he was you know out there on his own he'd been brought down to the Earth he'd been named he'd been identified he'd been tied down and connected to everyone around him he was at the end his at his very end still very human uh there's you know well you know there's more with the baron down the much further down the line and more more on Paul in a moment but first I want to finish out talking about the action sequences so of course there's the duel the iconic moment from the trailers but I respect Den v v vov and his team immensely for having the guts to make this a very quick fight a lot of movies would have stretched this out to to be a very ornate multi and that's fine too I love a long action sequence look at the success of John the John Wick franchise but this was fast which made it seem more real and also what made up for it again we're talking about balance it was fast but it was also beautifully choreographed and brutal like sure Paul won but not before he got stuck with not just one but two massive blades I mean I'm amazed that he didn't bleed out when he pulled pulled those swords out Kudos also to Shalom and Butler for carrying out the fight choreography so well again a mix a very incredible mix of action and art all right now let's talk Paul atres I finally see it an incredible character but at first with the first movie I did feel as I said it was a bit like stop trying to make Paul trades happen he seemed almost like a classic Disney princess a Regal likable character for sure but you know wide-eyed innocent who who things largely happened to he had no agency and perhaps you know that was an intentional Choice when you look at the full character Arc but that's the problem when you divide a single book into two movies two movies that are almost three years apart you divide and pause your character Arc so that it seems like you know there's not enough growth but when in fact there is incredible growth to me what's most interesting about Paul at trates is that he is a man in just the right place at just the right time and he is in many ways at the Nexus of everything that's in play with this story he's house to tradies but yet also we discover he's house hekinan he is a man a prince and a soldier but yet he has also been trained in the ways of uh the all female benzar meaning he wields the power of both genders of of his world the powers of the men and the powers of the women as a royal he understands how the houses operate yet he has also learned the ways of the fman and and on that note I mean isn't that just it's beautiful speaking of balance uh he wins the physical fight thanks to the fan at the end but he cements his victory by showing respect to the ways that the houses operate and that's by offering to Mary the emperor's daughter so that the emperor's bloodline at least stays in power to a degree and that also the idea is is that will lend credibility to an air now the other houses don't go along with it anyway at first and that's why the hekinan part of Paul tell the fman forces to lead them to Paradise which in other words means kill them all so I think after the first couple of rounds of killing I would think that the everybody who's left over at the houses would say you know what maybe Paul is okay especially since he's going to marry Princess erel uh Ulan uh princess Ulan uh she's going to be ruling beside him and help him produce an air and that's going to help that medicine go down a that spice is going to help the medicine go down a little better uh so it was it was very clever and it shows how Paul operates and how he's able to operate because again he he has he has a connection to so many different to everything now as for Timothy Shalom while I did feel he was perfectly cast as a male Disney princess in the first film I was really pleasantly surprised and impressed that he was able to portray Paul's Evolution and to become the more aggressive character Shalom is able to carry himself not just like the leader of an army but believably as a messiah that's very hard to do with body language especially since he played the opposite so well it's unusual to see both elements in a I mean I guess you would say that's acting but it's especially in someone who's a a lead actor that's usually a character actor trait it's very very impressive I was just really impressed as soon as you saw him you were like oh yeah that guy is in charge he didn't even have to say anything now speaking of the Messiah this is also to me fascinating now is Paul at trates the Messiah that's of course the big question I know a lot of you who are fans of the books insist that he is not and that's the whole point of the books but I feel this movie and I'm curious to see what Den V V's uh reasoning is behind this because he's not done yet he says he wants to make Dune three but I feel this movie did an excellent job of saying that maybe he is the Messiah I thought that it at the end it became awfully convincing and I'm curious how you feel about it to me what made me be like oh damn maybe maybe still gs on to something was it was ch's tears you know cuz she was actually her her fman name was Desert Spring and the prophecy had said that the CH you know the Messiah will only be brought out of his uh sleep you know from taking the Water of Life by this the tears of like the Desert Spring and it was John's tears and it worked it worked now lady Jessica I would totally think she would just be lying there totally awake but pretending to be asleep until chny came over and gave the tears but I don't think Paul would fake that especially not with chny so it made me feel that that was true and I was like well you know maybe he is the Messiah and maybe Deni is taking a position that it's both because while the movie does make you wonder whether or not Paul is really the Messiah it also shows you that no matter what either way nobody Rises to power all on their own even for a messiah even if he was the Messiah maneuvering at the human level is still necessary so let's take a look at that SAR is incredibly important to the rise of Paul not only in his faith that Paul is the Messiah but in his ability to do something about it he's the one who makes Jessica the new Reverend mother putting her in a position to help uh sgar cement Paul as the Messiah to the fan now well and when it comes to Jessica while sgar truly believes Paul is the Messiah Jessica simply sees a myth that can be harnessed and she sees a lot more after she drinks the Water of Life by the way to become the new Reverend mother for the fman and when she drinks that water it awakens the mind of her unborn daughter who she can now speak to while her daughter is still in the womb and that is certainly unique to Dune and Paul's unborn sister is like let me get in on this I care about my brother I want to help him out so Paul has his mother and his unborn sister who will eventually be played by Honor Taylor Joy who shows up here really briefly like for just a minute or even less uh in a in a vision of Paul's uh but they're working to put Paul to where he needs to be so Jessica and Aaliyah Are strategizing they're plotting to make sure everyone thinks Paul is indeed the Messiah using Jessica's position as the head of the fman religion to get that message out in fact they intentionally Target the uh parts of the fman I think it's the southern right um I keep thinking of the Southern and Northern water tribes because we just did Avatar again but I think you know the part of the fman that are more religious so basically Jessica turns the religion of the freman into the their version of the benzar right even down to the styles of of dress taking what she learned from them the benzar about manipulating the powers that be through religion and subterfuge and doing that to the fman right uh so you know that's that's really interesting you know so much of the benzer's uh tools from strategy to to the voice right Etc are being used against them thanks to Lady Jessica and her son who she trained in their ways uh you know switching sides then finally a couple of spoiler notes on some of my favorite performances I'm not going to go over everybody everybody did a great job everybody did a wonderful job but I think there are a couple of actors that you know I want I just want to give a little bit of a a spoiler shout out so Zena of course Zena Zena does a wonderful job here especially and that she's able to give Chie dignity and strength instead of just playing the girlfriend and that's hard to do uh so I'm you know Zena very much makes Chie her own person I felt awful for her when Paul announced he would marry Princess uh uh iruin and I'm you know good for Johnny for keeping her cool as best she could and maintaining what little of her dignity was left right but she didn't deserve to have that sprung in her in front of everyone but I guess to be fair she wasn't on speaking terms with Paul that'll teach you to totally shut someone out Bes before they're going to make a big speech I think maybe chny should have checked in with them been like I'm still upset with you but what what's the game plan here uh then at the end of the movie when she's getting ready to ride off on a sand worm by herself and she's really upset I was like you go find your own franchise then de you ride that sandworm off into another you know off into the sunset another franchise although of course there is already talk of June 3 where her character continues to be very important uh then Florence Pew speaking of Princess erand while Zena might have won the Red Carpet fashion battle Florence Pew won the film battle H her costumes were incredible like Princess Leia times a gabillion but Pew made these crazy costumes not only seem perfectly normal that's incredible she she's like yeah you see this little mesh uh you know ski mask I love it you're like it actually looks like you're very comfortable uh but she also made them seem of course very high fashioned uh Pew here exudes not just the natural Grace of a princess but a groundedness which I thought was really impressive not just aesthetically you know they decided to depict the uh Emperor and his daughter is very much in tune with nature right but I think it also makes her a formidable opponent because she is even-handed in her emotion that makes her even-handed in her strategy and it gives her a very even-handed footing so and we discover of course that she has been trained by the benad jeser but I thought she was great I really loved what they did there uh Austin Butler again ever since I saw him in Elvis that's all I've been able to see him as shades of Elvis and so here I was so happy for him and the movie that he was able to become something else and he felt very he felt very much like an extension of Stell and scars guard's Baron like a baby version of that whatever that monster was was like this was the baby lean and mean version of that bloated Elder but yet make no mistake that was probably the path that uh Fed rala was on but I thought it was amazing it was great and that's my spoiler review for Dune part two so much to chew on from action to visuals performance philosophy history ah sci-fi you know in Hollywood and you know the history of the the genre I hope you enjoyed Dune 2 as much as I did and if did not I hope maybe my spoiler review was able to help you gain New Perspective on the film and maybe look at it a little differently and maybe appreciate it and maybe hopefully even enjoy enjoy it a little bit more all right share your own thoughts and theories and observations down below subscribe today and of course as always you can check
