hello everyone welcome back the workshop so in this video we're going to be cleaning up this little 66 pound anvil that you can find on Amazon or Ebay I'll put a link to this anvil if you want to read up on the specs in the descriptions and all that other stuff I'll put an affiliate link down in the description down below so you can go check it out be advised that if you do purchase something through that link it does go to help support the channel at no additional cost you then give me a little spiff to send you their way so again be advised full disclosure all that malarkey let's get right into it so this video will be grinding the edges on this anvil to an appropriate radius which I believe is right around 8th inch to 16th inch radius that's how you have most of my anvils dress because that's what I prefer you can do it however you like and then we will also be grinding the horn to a more usable condition right now the horn is really pitted because this is a cast steel anvil and I want to get rid of that pitting so I can have some nice clean work now I'm not going to grind this thing to oblivion I'm just gonna grind it to where most of the surface has smoothness to it the bottom of the anvil needs nothing in the face needs nothing so I would not suggest that you do that I would suggest that you focus on just your edges this anvil here has a bit of a burr on the edge and that's why I would grind it normally I would suggest to just leave the edge alone and let it work in naturally naturally as you work on the anvils edges you will slowly roll them over or you will get them radiused to a degree that's nice and workable over time so that's why I suggest that you don't do that right away but at any rate that's what we're gonna do we want to get right into it here and hopefully you guys will enjoy this little journey [Applause] okay so we've got this initial bit of grinding done as you can see I really just knocked off the burr on the edges here just so this way they're smooth and not sharp to the touch like you cut your sharp type thing when they mill this obviously there's gonna be I don't I don't even know what you'd call it if your machinist you know what it's talked about you you create a burr a lot of times with a cutter and if you don't sand that off you know at the end of a cutter you can leave just a little bit of a burr there it's a little bit tacky here could make you bleed so that's what I removed the inside of this Hardy hole here still has a bit of that burr but that's gonna rectify itself when we make tooling because we'll make the tooling to drift down inside here and that will roll off that inner edge so I would not suggest to clean that up because it's naturally going to do that as soon as we start making tooling for this anvil in this anvil the other thing that I did is this porn right here this had a really bad overhang again that burr where the burr kind of came out here and cut it had a bad overhang of a burr I went ahead and ground that back to get that out of the way of the actual Perl hole here so now the Perl hole is accessible which is good the one downside to the spiritual hole I wish they would have fixed this may have made the anvil just a little bit bigger is to actually have the perch will hole up here or maybe a little bit of a web of material or something come out here that may be something we might do in a later date is actually build this up with some weld with me some hard surface rod build this up with me some yeah probably some 70 18 and then some hard surface rod over that to build that out so this way it's more usable in this direction but that's much later down the road and I don't know if I'll even get to it but there we go now we're moving on to this now we're gonna move on to the horn instead of wasting a flat disk it is my suggestion to you instead of wasting the flap disk you need to take put on a hard stone grinding stone for this of whatever your choice is you need to get this bulk of this rough off before you go to your grinding desk I didn't mention it before this is just a 60 60 grit flap desk that's all you need you don't need to polish this edge or anything it's fine it's going to get worked down as you hammer on it and things like that this here don't start with your flat desk it's just going to get gummed up with paint and waste your time get in here with a grindstone and that's what we'll do now [Applause] okey doke so now we've got this horn and ground up nice and clean nice and smooth again this is just a 60 grit finish and that's really all you need if you're gonna prep this thing for jewelry work you'll probably want to go even more polished than that but this is where I'm going to stop it we didn't remove that much material off of this which is good because we want to maintain as much mass as we can for blacksmithing but as you can see again just really nice clean horn now it still has some pitting but again I would have to take in grind this down about another 64th of an inch maybe 1/32 of an inch of material around this whole thing to get it completely smooth and I'm just not willing to do that it's good for general forging work then you're gonna add some dings and this and that in this overtime anyhow so it's really not worth going through all that expense now the last thing that we're gonna work on is I'm gonna wire wheel all this nice and clean you can see the logo here now a little bit better hopefully I'm not trying to grind this I wasn't trying to grind this off in the video I was just highlighting where the logo was and now I'm gonna come in here and wire wheel all of this down and to get rid of the blue paint that I absolutely detest and hate so I'm gonna do that one thing I didn't mention at the beginning of this video because I believe you're all big boys and big girls out there where respiration if you're gonna be doing this process if you see me not wearing respiration don't follow me you know for that fact you know use your own due diligence on that health and safety is paramount for you so do what you want to do with that but it is probably ideal to go and where respiration when you're doing this especially when you get to the wire willing part and that's what I'm gonna do now so I'm gonna put on the wire willing portion I'm going to put on a mass for the wire wheel I should have had one on for the rest of all the grinding and stuff but I didn't so I'm gonna throw one on now because the wire will definitely tread up that paint and kind of throw it up in the air as where the grinder just kind of like smears the paint and peels it off more or less so anyways let's get right back into it we are gonna go ahead and wire wil this up on all sides get that paint off there and then I'll show you what we're gonna do to treat this so this way it won't rust okey doke so now we've got all the grinding and the wire willing done now we're going to go ahead and put in the extra effort in trying to prevent this thing from rusting as much as possible so for this process I like to use this over here I'm just actually new to this finding out that this product actually exists this one just happens to be locked tight extend rust neutralizer there's other types I believe crc sells one Justin over at good of the land I'll put a link to him down there where he talks about this you know like this rust preventative type stuff he's known about it for years I guess an autobody I didn't know about anything of it until just recently when I had some tools and stuff that I was giving away and I wanted to protect them found this happened to kick around this is a barn fine used it I'm like whoa that's pretty slick so anyways I can definitely recommend this stuff it does work it won't prevent rust altogether if you're you know soaking this and salt water it's still going to rust or if you let it sit out in the rain it's probably still going to rust but it does a good job at just general moisture things like that preventing like surface rust so again this is the Loctite extend rust neutralizer not a sponsor hashtag not a sponsor of this channel is just a barn find a happy little accident that I found in the barn the other portion of the coating that we will be using is some wd-40 again not a sponsor but guys have been coding their anvils in this forever like yeah it's just a general where I saying it's gonna sit for awhile and there might be a chance of it getting moisture or something like that this is going to be a great product to just spray on after you do your rust neutralizer stuff and let give this sufficient time to dry you're going to put on a light coating of this so how do we do this well you need to make sure that you clean the anvil of any oils or dusts that it may have from the grinding and the paint and the things like that the way you do that is with some acetone already did that on this one and then after you acetone the anvil you will find out that this thing will be super chilled and like cold and and especially in a cold day like this today it's the big jacket is my recommendation that you use a heat gun in you heat up your anvil slightly again this is a sixty six pound anvil so this is done with relative ease it takes about you know 45 minutes or so for it to be warmed up by using a heat gun and that's all we're going for is about body temp warm you're not wanting it to be super hot you're just looking for about body temp warmth where you can touch it and it's not chilly to your hands that will allow this stuff to work a lot better so I've already went through the trouble of doing that about 45 minutes worth of heating that up with the heat gun the way I've done that I just lay this down and just like let it heat multiple parts obviously not on this plastic tray but on just the tabletop itself and just like lay the anvil in different directions aiming the heat gun at it and that's all it takes to get this thing up to like a body temp which is good so we won't reckon Tim Rhett tempers or anything else like that so now let's go ahead and spray this on here really simple process make sure our nozzle is clean you can spray it on wherever you like I'm going to spray it on both the top in the rest of the piece but you just missed it on a nice light coating you don't want to go super heavy with the coating you want a nice light coating at first and they say to build it up in layers so you do that and you allow about 45 minutes to dry or otherwise basically just follow the instructions on the canned you know it's gonna tell you exactly what you need and the proper usage of this as far as caustic fumes or anything this is like really nice and easy it smells a lot like like a hobby paint store this stuff does like a light acetone or a small chemical smell you might still want a respirator you're going to use this a lot you might still want a good respirator on for that but uh otherwise the smells not tuning bad so when you get this sprayed on you're not gonna see too much happen all at once what will happen is as this sits and this cures it converts that surface oxide the iron oxide that's on the service of this anvil and it converts it into something else I don't know what exactly this is just what I have been told so again it ends up creating less here I'll read on the back that says converts rust to a neutral black surface ready for painting use on steel iron and other ferrous metals and then it also says later on that you don't have to use it for painting this can be just the prep itself so what will happen is this will darken out to a nice black finish for you and you know there's no paint involved so you know you're not smoking off paint whenever you Ben something around this piece or whatever in getting those chemicals in your lungs so you just let this dry on like it is and it'll convert it to a nice even black coating if everything is done right and all the conditions are met and then that's just how you do that so then you will follow up I will follow up with this wd-40 and I'll see how that goes I haven't done the wd-40 before with this surface rust stuff but we'll see how that how that pans out I can always let you know in the future but it would be my suggestion if it's gonna sit for a long time regardless of what it does to this stuff coat it in some wd-40 just to repel the water or anything like that especially if he's gonna be in a wet location but yeah so that's basically it this anvil is in good shape now I can take it around the shows and demos it's not a blue color anymore that just looks kind of childish again I don't know why they paint the paint and will sometimes the way they do they definitely don't have professionals and mine but any rate yeah so it doesn't have that awful blue color I could take this around to demonstrations and shows I can keep it for obviously going to make a base for it now we'll keep it around for you know students and instruction and things like that also for the whole year of 2020 as you're watching this video we'll be giving one of these away the unedited version before doing all this work let me be clear about that we'll be giving one of these away in our monthly live streams that we do so make sure that you hit the subscribe button in the bell for notifications we'll be giving one away a total of twelve of these ampoules in total for the entire year of 2020 so if you want to be a part of that you got to be part of the community and part of our blacksmith family here online and I hope you guys will enjoy join us and I hope you enjoyed the video and my little talking hands from host of the video and without without further ado I'm not gonna bore you this thing's gonna take 45 minutes to our to turn black and what not I'm not going to do that picture in your minds that this is a nice black color like down here anyways god bless each and every last one of you thank you so much for all your support and again come join us in one of our live streams for some great door prizes and maybe who knows maybe you can be one of the lucky winner to win this little anvil here so that's it for day god bless we'll catch you on the next one thanks for watching
