hello i'm julian fellowes the writer and creator of downton abbey and i'm very glad to say welcome back i can honestly say i have the same excitement every time we come down the drive to high clear castle where we shoot you know whatever it is about 40 of the show that first glimpse you have coming through the trees down the drive i i still get a funny feeling in my tummy because it's so beautiful and it's it's such a great place to work and i genuinely love all the people i work with at the beginning of series three we are in 1920 it's um it's about a year on more or less uh from where we left off the christmas special last year the 20s and 30s are an interesting period because in some ways they're becoming much much more recognizably the modern world and different values are coming in the movies air travel girls who you know 10 years before were waiting to be spoken to before they spoke suddenly they were rolling down their stockings and rouging their knees and and drinking like fishes you know it was an extraordinary sudden adjustment i think that the star of the series is always the house it's not the war in the second series it's downton goes to war now the house is having to adapt in the way it lives and how people live in it to the post-war world so each time the measure of change that we're putting our characters through are demonstrated in what's happened to the house okay let's clear please i play ivy the new kitchen maid who is brought in because daisy gets a promotion i play jimmy jimmy kent's the new footman um or one of the new footmen actually hi i'm matt milne and i'm playing alfred the new equipment it's a really great ensemble piece and i'm you know i'm really lucky to be a part of it to be honest i mean there's some fantastic actors to work with on this is you know it's i never went to drama school this is drama school for me in some respects i'm learning off some great people i was a massive fan as of my family so they are absolutely thrilled that i'm part of this everyone knows of downton and like at christmas all my family were around and we were all on christmas day watching it and just everyone's everyone's been so welcoming that that's that's been part of the thing they've all lived with this for so long and when when you come into it it's just like any entering any sort of i don't know a group of group of mates really like uh you start off as the newbie or the outsider but everyone everyone was so supportive down here you know in the in the in the in the cauldron as it were you know just watching the likes of jim carter watching the likes of shiv watching the likes of rob and having these momentary interactions with them and seeing how they're doing things you're learning all the time it's a great show to be a part of it's the kind of tv that any i think any actor would really want to who are doing do in here you'll get a background action to start your action my character she's she's very young and curious and you know she's got ambition and she's quite strong i have a lot of scenes when i first arrived with the two boys just chatting in the kitchen flirting away i think although it's jimmy who either fancies the pants off basically and she really likes alfred and they have a lot of fun together alfred leaps at the chance with ivy when she comes the dynamics will change when jimmy comes in with ivy's advances he plays off it but i think he also plays off it because he knows that alfred is mad about her and i think that's what he he gains is more advantage is seeing alfred squirm so daisy likes alfred alfred likes ivy and ivy likes jimmy we have lots of fun scenes in the kitchen together where the footmen are kind of dardling and flirting with the girls which is fun hello alfred's learning the foxtrot i bet he is but he's gonna have to do better than that what do you mean why well he's only learning to please alrighty aren't you milado is that true well of course it is you want to be cut i got it good handy okay nice great 158 take three a b mark really i have to say the words shirley and maclean in in that order and it says all you need to know yeah she's not done a lot before actually you know it was nice you know um for her to you know finally get some work and and no i mean that was just that was mad actually and that we we kicked off the whole series with her really she has her own shirley approach to everything and um and it was so refreshing we were all nervous i think but she just was so kind and put us all at ease and wanted to tell us these amazing stories i mean the chats with her in between takes uh i yeah i will never forget nor will i repeat half of them but um i sat there in dinner scenes between maggie on one side and shirley on the other and you know getting to pinch myself i can't believe it was sitting between these two great legends and then chatting about you know the work they've done with some icons of the screen and stage like olivier and gene kelly or whoever it might be wonderful dynamic with maggie you know violet's great one-liners were almost sort of doubled back at points the character really does come in like a kind of you know small tornado you know and just kind of rattles the house you hear this thing people have an aura about them she she's got an aura all right and she sort of kind of jumped out the car and she was looking around and sort of smiling and then she was looking for someone this is this is true stories this is my claim to fame she pointed at me in the thing and went there he is the evil one and walked straight over to me and i'm like oh my god in my head sheila mclean is walking straight over to me she just called me the evil one she was just like oh here he is here's the bad one why are you so bad why are you so evil and she was totally she was a massive fan of downton i was like sorry i'm stood next to him i think i'm better than he is you're just like wow yes she loved the rob she had the love for the thomas that people like shirley maclean would even consider doing it to see her and maggie in the scenes that julian has written brilliantly for them too i mean they are going to be epic really are two actual legends on screen battling it out my character comes in and shakes the whole thing up and says it's time to change you can't can't live in this in this bubble of irreality and formality any longer the world is different it's not gunfight at the okay corral it's about a woman who's coming uh to discuss the values i have a reason for being in this not just to go head to head with maggie smith but the whole idea of these two characters represent the total polarities so so [Music] edith's been looking forward to this for a long time she's madly in love but unfortunately she's going to be jilted at the altar she got jilted at the altar did you know that oh yes nightmare getting married it's hard work it's a lot to worry about she came she came on set and she was like look at my ring and i i thought as mary you know it's bigger yeah this is this is her great day at last this is her moment of happiness but it's all gone a bit pear-shaped and poor old edith has been jilted at the altar but it's probably probably right he did he's probably done that he's probably done the right thing he did he'll find happiness elsewhere i'm sure well here we are outside saint mary's in bamton in oxfordshire downton in the sow and um this is the day on which mary marries matthew it's when it all comes together and the months and months and months of planning that have gone into this minute i mean like for any wedding and when we saw michelle in the dress it was like seeing michelle on a wedding got really emotional we had a a kind of mini hen night and had a few glasses of champagne before it was lovely if you look very very close on your tv screen you might see a slight bit of moisture in the mother of the bride's eye i was sitting at the back with a bunch of the downstairs staff who unfortunately had hangovers i've found a nice bench at the back of the church where i've been been asleep for most of the afternoon my favorite part was just seeing maggie and shirley sitting there like supporting artists with not very much to do the decades of film and tv history in a pew [Music] you
