now considering that at the moment ram is actually one of the few pc components that's reasonably priced it may be tempting to buy 32 gigs of ram to try and future proof your shiny new gaming system but in 2020 is there any point to buying 32 gigs of ram over 16 or is it just a bigger number in your task manager that'll make you feel better about some potential shortcomings [Music] now this is a topic that many people have done in the past but i've decided to see for myself considering that i am the proud owner of 32 gigs of ram but basically this video is gonna have two parts the first one is i'm just gonna benchmark a bunch of fairly new games and see if any of them benefit going from 16 gigs to 32 gigs of ram and then in the second part we're gonna see if we can get some games to use more than 16 gigs of ram i don't know how much that gives away the benchmark results but yeah let's get into that first of all now the ram kits that i'm using today are actually two different sets of ram but i'm going to be testing them at 3 200 megahertz at the same cast latencies uh so the 32 gig kit that i'm using is predator hyperx memory which i use in my editing system it's the only reason that i actually have that and then the 16 gig kit is a corsair vengeance rgb pro kit which is normally rated for 3600 megahertz uh but i used it at 3200 megahertz because that's what my 32 gig kit runs at now i'm gonna discuss the merit of the speeds of the ram later in the video as well because i think that that's very relevant to the conclusion now as far as the test system goes i'm using my standard test system that i've used over the last couple of videos i've got a ryzen 7 1700x overclocked to 3.9 gigahertz in there it's not the fastest cpu but it's what i have available for this tests graphics cards wise we're using an rtx 2070 super [Music] [Music] now the results are exactly as i expected it doesn't really make any difference they're all within the margin of error now when it comes to gta 5 i did the tests with max draw distance under advanced graphic settings and yeah you can see super far like as you can see here i'm flying a helicopter over the map and there's massive draw distances you can see super far but yeah we're still not using that much ram now you could probably mod gta 5 up quite a lot to get it to a point where you use more than 16 gigs of ram but yeah here it's it's it's not really using it now i also thought it's important that i actually test escape from tarkov because i found that it uses quite a lot of ram as we all know it's a game that runs weirdly badly sometimes and a lot of that has to do with its ram utilization as you can see here on customs which isn't a huge map but it's reasonably sized it uses about 13 and a half gigs which again you're still not capping out 16 gigs it has 32 gigs available in this screen capture that i'm showing you here but it's it's just not using it however when you move over to a new map reserve with all of the new underground tunnels and stuff it actually peaked at just over 16 gigs which is very exciting finally a game using more than 16 gigs of ram when it comes to fortnite 16 gigs of ram is more than enough as you can see here i'm playing the game badly and yeah it's it's not even getting close to using 16 gigs of ram assassin's creed odyssey which is like a big ubisoft sandbox game with visuals up the butt and lots of expansive view distances also doesn't use that much ram and then finally when looking at doom eternal which is actually the newest game that i tested today uh for some reason it actually really hates having the performance metrics displayed in the top left of the screen i don't know why it keeps flickering in and out but as you can see here it doesn't ever go above eight gigs of ram utilization it is again not a very ram hungry game most of these games don't break 10 gigs of ram utilization so yeah it seems like even with 16 gigs of ram for a lot of the games you still have quite a bit of headroom so now with that let's see if we can unnecessarily create a situation where a game uses about 32 gigs of ram now i asked my discord about this and their response was it's easy if you want to get a game that uses a lot of ram just use minecraft with a bunch of mods and stuff now it's actually really easy to get the pc to think that minecraft is using 32 gigs of ram all you need to do is allocate 32 gigs of ram to minecraft and then as you can see here in msi afterburner it very proudly tells you that you're using an absolute metric but on a ram but if you press f3 and look at the actual in-game metrics and stuff like that it's it's not using that much even with a render distance of 64 chunks as you can see it's a huge world but yeah we're not we're not getting 32 gigs of ram now after that i've asked my discord for some more help and they gave me just a huge amount of mods and stuff to add to the game now here we're running 99 mods with a very big render distance and we're still only getting about 12 gigs of ram at the peak that the game is using which is is pretty disappointing it's not nearly as high as i thought it was gonna be now apparently if you have a bunch of like really complicated machines and stuff going and you have a really built up server you can use like 20 24 gigs of ram with minecraft but i'm way too much of a boomer to know how to do any of that stuff now after that i went on a short journey on the internet to try and see if anybody knows of games that they play regularly that uses 32 gigs of ram now unfortunately unless you're really heavily modding some open world game that that doesn't really seem to be the case city skylines does pop up a bunch some people say that it uses up to 24 gigs of ram if you've got like a bunch of stuff going on now the only thing that i can think of in the near future that may get to a point that you're actually going to utilize 32 gigs of ram is the new version of microsoft flight simulator that's coming out soon that actually has like a recommended ram amount of 32 gigs so i'm curious to see how much ram and system resources that game's actually gonna use i'm pretty excited i'll definitely do a video on it when it comes out so in conclusion in 2020 32 gigs of ram is is pretty pointless for most use cases in escape from takov you could benefit potentially from having a bit more than 16 gigs of ram especially if you're a streamer or something like that but yeah i think for most people i would recommend that you get faster ram rather than more ram that'll definitely benefit you more and chances are you know if you need more than 16 gigs of ram because you have some weird skyrim mod fetish or whatever but yeah so with that thank you very much for watching if you enjoyed the video like and subscribe to the channel for more videos like this one thank you very much for watching and until the next video bye [Music]
