Did Tesla Cancel the $25,000 Model 2?

today we're getting into the latest tesla news including new cyber truck leaks a new product from tesla that's unexpected the latest on the tesla bot and tesla's latest for the 25 000 ev so let's get into it and a special thanks to athletic greens for sponsoring this video [Music] first up today tesla is facing another large recall and once again it's pointing to how outdated the term recall is a recall in general can refer to anything that needs fixing in a car on a large scale but typically it would require a service center visit only in the most extreme cases would a recall actually entail a company taking back the cars they sold but many still have the impression that this is what a recall means tesla has faced a number of recalls over the years just like every other company and some of those have required a hardware fix recently though they've hit headlines for some recalls that were fixed with over-the-air software updates this time the same is happening with a new recall of around 54 000 teslas for a feature included in the full self-driving beta tesla is recalling 53 822 vehicles on the fsd beta because the latest version will allow the vehicle to conduct rolling stops and not come to a complete stop at some intersections which poses a safety risk especially in an area like california a rolling stop is par for the course for human drivers but the standard for self-driving is high as it should be nitsa said the recall covers some 2016 through 2022 model s's and x's 2022 model 3s and 2020 through 2022 model wise and the fix tesla will perform an over-the-air software update that disables the rolling stop functionality nitsa said tesla did not immediately respond to a request comment essentially this is just some feedback from nitsa that the rolling stop feature isn't something they feel tesla should ship so tesla is fixing it with an update it really has nothing to do with the recall and at this point it would be nice to see a name change something like tesla fsd change pushed by nitsa would make more sense but software updates in cars are a new thing so these agencies need time to catch up likely as fsd develops further there may be a number of recalls fixed with updates like this next up today we already saw some leaks of the cyber truck last week as it was brought into gigatexas at the time we assumed that it was being brought in as a part of tesla's earnings call and that they would share photos or production updates on the new design in these leaked photos and videos we saw the lack of door handles a rounded front end the addition of an instrument cluster like the model s and x what appears to be touch buttons for the doors if needed among a few other smaller changes now some new photos have leaked or been posted courtesy of joe rogan on instagram it looks like he was at giga texas with elon and got a chance to check out the cyber truck he posted five photos of the cyber truck exterior and said quote the cyber truck is the coolest car i've ever seen in my life insanely attractive in real life and feels like a huge leap into the future in the first photo we can see the front light bar lit up at night and it does have a great look from this angle the second photo shows how the rear of the cyber truck has changed from the original prototype with the tailgate attaching straight on instead of at a steeper angle like we previously saw the third photo shows that a little more in depth along with the black truck bed and track for the truck bed cover the fourth photo doesn't show much aside from the tow hitch and the last photo shows it again from the side unfortunately at tesla's earnings called the only update we really got was that tesla will hopefully be able to work on truly launching the cyber truck next year tesla's current focus is on scaling up their current products which makes sense but it's disappointing for those looking forward to the cyber truck many believe this truck will never get released so it'll be extremely interesting to watch the launch of this thing eventually many are concerned about the cyber truck as well ending up as the last truck to launch to the public after rivian ford gm and others but we're seeing delays and slow scaling across the board from every company with electric trucks many have announced their trucks to come in 2024 or later and that's for initial production for pre-order holders electric trucks actually being available to the masses won't come for some time and tesla has more experience than anyone on scaling up electric cars ford has more experience making trucks but the electric part is the difficult part so we'll have to wait and see it could be a very different result than many are expecting even with massive delays on this crazy sci-fi truck most exciting announcements came back in september of 2020. they held their battery day and outlined the new trajectory for battery costs that would come as a result of their 4680 battery cells these new developments would ultimately lead them to ship a 25 000 ev in the coming future for the longest time we've wondered when tesla would ship a cheaper electric vehicle the model 3 was a huge accomplishment but has only gone up in price lately at this event though elon said quote we're confident the long term we can design and manufacture a compelling 25 000 electric vehicle you know this has always been our dream from the beginning of the company i think probably about three years from now we're confident we can make a very compelling 25 000 electric vehicle that's also fully autonomous that three-year timeline was something many wanted to ignore especially since there were many rumors circulating about tesla already working on this car prototyping this car in china building the factory for it and so on people including myself want this car earlier than 2023 however as we see with tesla consistently an actual timeline should be given the same treatment as a movie start time you know that if you arrive 15 minutes past the start time you'll still be fine in most cases and the same is true for tesla's actual release timelines in any case what we've seen lately is that the 25 000 tesla is dead other articles say that tesla is not working on their 25 000 car and that is because of what elon said on their last earnings call on that call when asked about this car he said quote well we're not currently working on the 25 000 car at some point we will but we have enough on our plate right now too much on our plate frankly so at some point there will be right there assuming elon is telling the truth it pushes back the original three-year timeline tesla right now is focused on scaling up the cars they currently sell and as unfortunate as that is it makes a ton of sense they have absolutely no problem selling every single vehicle that they can make at a high price point so introducing a cheap ev right now would just complicate things for them and cause them to ship less cars especially initially another aspect though is elon's focus on full self-driving which worries many for the fate of this car he said quote it's sort of the wrong question really it's really the thing that overwhelmingly matters is when is the car autonomous i think at the point in which it is autonomous the cost of transport drops by i don't know a factor of four or five what elon is getting at here is that if the model 3 is fully autonomous there will be no reason to buy a cheaper car you can buy tesla's already quote cheap model 3 and then have it out making money for you paying for itself and making a profit on their robo taxi as tesla originally talked about a few years back who needs a cheaper car then right the main issue here is that tesla's goal is to accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy this would absolutely fit that goal if tesla was truly going to achieve level 5 autonomy this year or earlier like elon has reiterated many times however that reality seems pretty unlikely especially considering the massive delays fsd has already faced over the years i understand elon's forward thinking here but also understand why some are worried that tesla is only thinking long term and not addressing the current market where many can't afford any current tesla i'll talk more about elon's forward thinking in a bit before we go any point at a time when their entire fleet sold for cheaper than it does now battery day took place on september 22nd 2020 and if we look at the model y at that time we can see a starting price of forty nine thousand nine hundred ninety dollars this is for the exact same car that tesla now sells for nine thousand dollars more for the cheapest car tesla sells the standard range plus model three that car sold for the lovely price of thirty seven thousand nine hundred ninety dollars when battery day happened that car now sells for seven thousand dollars more at forty four thousand nine hundred ninety that brings that car up from a little over thirty five thousand dollars to forty five thousand dollars which is a huge jump tesla's goal is to bring these prices down but it does seem like it will be quite some time before a price increase actually can occur for them at the same time unfortunately this likely means that the twenty five thousand dollar price point is no longer in play something like thirty thousand dollars or even thirty five thousand dollars the originally announced model 3 starting price seems more likely for this vehicle so there will be a lot of headlines about tesla cancelling the model too how tesla dropped plans for their cheap car or how they aren't working on them as promised in reality what they promised wasn't much they talked about a vision of a future ev that many have been excited about for its game-changing price but even when it was announced elon said he thinks probably in about three years that's about as vague as tesla gets so is the 25 000 tesla cancelled probably at least in the form people have expected and at that exact price but the product is still something they plan to make they're just not working on it right now next up today a new image of model wise being built at giga texas has surfaced online this image is in line with the images tesla themselves posted with their earnings report and tesla said these are model wise being built with their new structural battery packs and 4680 battery cells that they had announced at battery day this will be what tesla is considering a model y 2.0 but it's also version 1.0 of their new battery system it's understandable why the 25 000 ev and cyber truck both reliant on this new battery setup are delayed especially if tesla is just starting their first production in any case i mentioned this on my earnings haul video but it's worth mentioning again tesla currently plans to ship the model y out of giga berlin in the near future using the same battery tech they are now in texas they will be using their new battery cells and structural pack and they plan to start shipments this quarter which likely means march many are curious how they'll handle this transition since different factories will be shipping different versions of the model y and once it ships that should become clear i'll be sure to keep you updated on that but regardless them implementing the new pack is very exciting for their future battery cost trajectory next up today as we saw come into focus on tesla's earnings call after its announcement at ai day the tesla bot is a very real idea for tesla and their future plans many have felt that the tesla bot is a distraction or is by no means something tesla will ever make but on tesla's recent earnings call it was one of the main things elon musk focused on dave lee a well-known tesla investor said quote i think it's possible that elon musk was shown a better than expected super early humanoid robot prototype by his team perhaps one that can walk and rough port of fsd made it obvious to him that tesla needs to double down on this that's a theory many have since tesla's unveil of the teslabot seem to be a lot of fluff with details of a vision but no true product in response to this tweet though elon musk said quote i'm driving this program personally as is the case for almost all new programs this shines some light on a few things for one if elon is driving the tesla bot program personally of course he is going to be focused on the tesla bot on their earnings call when many are worried about current issues at tesla it's an unfortunate side effect of elon musk's forward thinking but it's what helps tesla look one step ahead in every move they make then it shows that the tesla bot is something tesla is focused on elon is focused on it here but tesla's director of ai also said that the tesla bot is quote on track to become the most powerful ai development platform there are many job openings tesla is putting up including ai tooling and deep learning and carpathi posted these on linkedin saying quote there is no other organization that vertically integrates develops and deploys cutting edge robotics ai at this scale our goal is to improve the safety and comfort of driving along the way to automating transportation with full self-driving we're also applying everything we've learned to our humanoid robot teslabot this project is something elon said they'd have a prototype of this year in reality that seems far-fetched but just because elon is late to nearly everything he announces does not mean that those things will never come or are never being developed i doubt we'll be talking about any tangible progress that customers can actually see in the teslabot this year but the next few years could get interesting i think this may also be another reason why elon won't be on too many earnings calls going forward many get concerned when all we hear tesla talking about is a robot in full self-driving however that's just what elon is focused on and tesla as a whole has a ton going on related to current day products and problem solving that elon himself isn't directly touching each and every day next up today tesla has released a new product called tesla mic it's a microphone designed specifically for the in-car karaoke system and it's only available in china right now like tesla has done with their holiday updates they have now pushed a chinese new year software update in china at the same time as this update they launched the tesla mic which works with leichi ktv which is the karaoke system they're adding in this update you can buy the mic on tesla's chinese merch store for around 188 tesla's karaoke system comes with all of their cars and a specific list of songs and that feature has been around since 2019. with this new 2022.2.1 update in china this is a much more complex system with a larger catalog and interface from lychee ktv as i mentioned the mics have actually been incredibly popular and sold out within an hour of launching according to tesla the tesla mic pairs to the system automatically and comes with different sound modes to help out singers we'll see if this makes its way over to the us but it seems like something that won't come at least not for a long time one feature of that new update as well that tesla is expected to bring to all of their cars in the near future is the ability to change your vehicle color on screen currently your vehicle animation on screen is tied to the original color of your car as painted at the factory and you can change wheels between the tesla offerings now they're adding a color option that will allow you to choose any color if you got your car wrapped repainted or changed in any way you can now change it to match and it will also be reflected within the app this is a welcomed feature so that you can feel like you're controlling your car as it has been personalized for you not as it came from the factory next up today tesla is expanding the program to open up their supercharger network their supercharger network is one of the best parts of owning a tesla with over 30 000 global chargers and counting one thing tesla plans to do long term is open up their supercharger network to any and all evs they can they began opening their chargers in november of 2021 with a pilot program in the netherlands and now they are expanding tesla charging tweeted saying quote non-tesla vehicles can now charge at select superchargers in france and norway via the tesla app tesla is taking a slow approach here which is good to see because many have worried about already congested superchargers in popular areas getting even more crowded as a result of opening without much of a plan tesla does have a clear plan here and they said quote we're starting with a select number of sites so that we can review the experience monitor congestion and assess feedback before expanding future sites will only be opened to non-tesla vehicles if there is available capacity in any case it's exciting to see more chargers opening up and it should allow us to get reviews of how the implementation works for non-teslas in a tesla you just plug in and the charge is linked to your account for another car you have to use the app last up today tesla released a great demo of the hepa filtration system included in the cars the hepa filter currently comes in the model y model s and model x and it is called bio-weapon defense mode it's a gimmicky tesla name but it's a legitimately effective product that can be especially useful in wildfires smoggy areas and more for the tests they put a model y in a bubble next to a demo bmw they turned on bioweapon defense mode lit some colored smoke grenades and even had someone inside the model y to demonstrate how effectively it scrubs the air the cabin stays clear as you can tell even with the outside air getting extremely cloudy in the bmw with a standard filter this obviously does not occur they show what the filters look like after and you can see how each stage of the hepa filter on the model y takes care of all the red smoke in the air one thing to point out here though is that while the air filter is good on the model 3 it likely would have performed similar to the bmw so maybe that is a change tesla can make in the long term model 3 space is limited for a large filtration system like this but tesla clearly values the hepa filter so maybe they can figure something out that's all the latest tesla news for today so in the meantime if you want to see
