The Cadaver King and the Country Dentist by Balko/Carrington discusses the coroner/medical examiner situation in a lot of depth if anyone wants to learn more.
My understanding is that Erik Mitchell (Alonzo Brooks) is a medical examiner and forensic pathologist, so what is his excuse?
I did not know this.
That's not to say medical examiners are always correct in their findings. Notorious former Arkansas medical examiner, Fahmy Malak, whose controversial ruling in the deaths of Don Henry and Kevin Ives comes to mindπ€
Luckily have a very good coroner where I live that is an actual medical examiner. When we got a new sheriff, he wanted this change (I vote and donβt really remember voting for a coroner, it just kind of happened). Some old timers were pissed he was pushing out the old guy, but like? Heβs just some old guy. This new sheriff wanted cases solved and no mistakes. So he wanted an actual trained person.
Yeah just ask the coroner who botched the autopsies of the boys on the tracks in Arkansas. They died when they got hit by a train which they didn't see coming because "they were too high on marijuana".
Coroners do not usually do autopsies.
I've dealt with Coroners many times in my life. Here is what they do:
When a dead body is found, the Coroner shows up to the location of the body. It's usually a house, condo or an apartment.
He takes photos of the body where it was found and of the inside of the home.
If foul play is suspected, the police are contacted and eventually a team is brought in to get evidence.
If no foul play, the Coroner and a couple other people remove the body.
The Coroner then gathers all the dead persons personal belongings that have significant value: cash, jewelry, etc. They make sure that nothing is left laying around that can be stolen by anyone who may have access to the home.
When he's done, he puts yellow tape over the front door and a small note informing that it's illegal for anyone to enter the home.
He contacts the closest relative or the executor to the estate and gives the personal belongings to that person.
More often than not, the autopsy is performed by a medical examiner. Sometimes the state will have the coroner do the autopsy. In those cases, the coroner is always a qualified pathologist.
This notion that states are electing Coroners with no medical history what so ever who will perform autopsies is kind of ridiculous.
This times a thousand
This segment is very eye-opening.
