That was brilliance. Grohl is one of a kind with a heart as big as Lemmys.

I even have a Lemmy story. I think it was 2009 or so and I was working in LA and had a few cousins who came in from Tennessee and were doing the tourist thing while crashing in my spare bedroom. I was too busy working so they just kinda showed up, slept, and were out the door at odd hours. One day I get a call.

“Hey, you know this place...where can we see a celebrity?”

“Fuck if I know they are everywhere and nowhere, they just show up and it’s usually a let down.”

“Cmon man, just tell us if you know of a place.”

“Fine....go down to the Rainbow Lounge around lunch or so and look who is sitting at the video game on the end of the bar.”

Lunchtime rolls around and sure enough...ring ring

“Hello?“

“FUCKING LEMMY? What the hell should we do?”

“If it’s Lemmy, you be respectful and buy him a Jack and Coke. Hell, stand him up for drinks and eats if he is willing.”

Turns out they did and Lemmy was an outright gentlemen and talked about touring the South and some other rock and roll tales for two hours or so with them. They came home floating on air, just star struck, and outright thrilled of being able to hang out with a badass rock and roll god who was actually a really nice guy.

Loved the guy...you could set a watch to him ambling out of his place and down to the Rainbow if he was in town. Like clockwork.

"I wanted to give it to him on his birthday"

That is genuine heartbreak right there... Beautiful tribute.

He is just such a genuine person, someone who still can acknowledges the small but important things in life.
Even though he is larger than life he remains grounded in what drives life, honest and acknowledged relationships.

It doesn't quite mean the same, but when I see someone in an authentic moment where they can capture and elevate those around them, I'll say this -

That was a rockstar moment Dave...good on ya

Took me by the guts. Listen to 'friend of a friend' he sung, it's about Cobain and its about as powerful

That was good storytelling. I never listened to Motorhead a lot but as a big Neil Peart fan, I can totally relate to the passing of someone influential to your art.

Back when Dave was playing the drums for Queens, I had the pleasure and the absolute luck to hang out with him. I was drunk, not hammered, at the show and I thought fuck it, I’m going to get as close as I can to him and just act like I work security or something. This show was in Detroit at the shelter. Well I got on stage about 5 feet from dave. He’d look at me weird at first then just started laughing. I was approached by security and I told them I worked for the band. They bought it. Then the bands set was done and all the security guys start walking my way. I was thinking shit I’m fucked. They tried to toss me out but dave said what are you guys doing? He works for mex they let me go. I said thanks man I just wanted to see if I could get on stage and laughed. He thought it was hilarious and asked if I wanted to party with him and the band. Well of course I do lol and asked if my friends could join and he said absolutely. Well dave was probably the most down to earth rock star I ever meet. He just chilled with me and my friends for a few hours doing shots and slamming brews. Dude is a fucking legend and one hell of a stand up guy.

hi guys there's not enough time for me to tell you how much let me men to me and all of the amazing experiences that I had with him the first time I met Lemmy I was at [ __ ] crazy girls about 20 years ago and I was walking back to the men's room on the way back I looked to my left and I saw Lemmy by himself in the corner on a video game and I it blew my mind I knew that I couldn't just go say something because he was on his own in the corner on the way out I thought I have to say something he's my hero he's the one true rock and roller that bridged my love of ac/dc and Sabbath and Zeppelin with my love of GBH and the Ramones and Black Flag so I walked up and I said excuse me let me I don't want to bother you but you've influenced me so much you're my musical hero I'm a musician I'm playing the Foo Fighters and and I was in Nirvana and he looked up from the video game and the first thing he ever said to me he said hey I'm sorry about what happened to your friend and in that moment he went from being this gun-slinging whiskey-drinking badass mother [ __ ] rock star to being this gun-slinging whiskey-drinking badass mother [ __ ] rock star with a heart and I walked away and I thought if I never see him again that's enough for the rest of my life well then we became friends and it's one thing when you have a hero but it's another when your hero becomes your friend and over the years I have great stories of going to his apartment and walking through the aisles of pornos and magazines like a hoarders episode and the first time I was in or going to the rainbow and ordering two Jack and cokes and the waitress brings two Jack and cokes and his [ __ ] mail that's pretty huge before the one time when I texted him I said hey man my band is playing at the Pantages Theatre tonight you should come down and check it out he said all right I said it's an acoustic show it's not like a big rock thing because okay an hour later I'm downstairs in the backstage and I hear [ __ ] Motorhead blaring out of the dressing room and I get so excited like finally someone else in the band's [ __ ] listening to Motorhead and I open up the door and there's Lemmy by himself listening to Motorhead with a cigarette in a Jack and Coke in my dressing room oh my god Island so then I say hey man my mom was there I'm like you gotta meet my mom so we walk across the hallway and open up the door and in that room was my mother my wife and my daughter Violet who at the time I think was maybe six months old so let me walks in he's his drink he's got a cigarette and I'm like mom that's this is lamb you promoter him they are loaded and then he looks and he sees that there's a baby in a crib in the room and he puts out his cigarette and his drink and he puts the drink down now to most people that would seem like nothing I suppose but to me that was my hero putting out his cigarette and his drink and putting it aside because my daughter was there in the room so I think what everybody has always known or at least learned today is that Lemmy was not only that gun slinging whisky drinking badass [ __ ] rock and roll star but he had the biggest heart and he set such a great example because he was so kind to everyone people he didn't know people he'd loved for years he was so kind he and I shared a love of Little Richard I always said there was one person I could meet it would be a Little Richard because who's more badass than Little Richard one day I was at the airport at LAX and I was standing out in the curb and guy comes up to me he says hey I heard it the only person you ever wanted me to little Richard I said yeah I said well that's my dad so what he goes community we walk over to this limousine he taps on the window window comes down a little bit and it's [ __ ] Little Richard sitting in this car man they're like oh my god and this guy says as his window comes all the way down little Richard says like god bless you how are you nice to meet you and he signs this Bible pamphlet thing for me he hands it to me and I kept it and I wanted to keep it to him on his birthday so last night as sad and try to find something to say and I know that maybe wasn't a religious man [ __ ] Lord knows neither am i but this is a song that little richard sang and i thought i repeat it it's called precious Lord take my hand precious Lord take my hand lead me I want to help me stand Lord I'm tired I'm so weak Lord you know I'm worn through the storm through the night lead me on to the light take my hand precious Lord leave me home when my way it gets kind of dreary precious Lord somewhere near when my light is almost gone hear my cry Lord hear my call hold my hand lest I fall take my hand precious Lord lead me home Jesus lat [Applause] [Applause] [Music]
