come back to me with all your heart don't let fear keep us apart trees bend though straight and tall so must we to others call long have i waited for your coming home to me and living deeply on your life in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen the lord be with you we gather here today on the thursday after ash wednesday as we have just embarked upon our lenten journey a time of searching our souls searching our hearts a time of conversion and as we gather here we cry out for mercy lord have mercy [Music] christ have mercy lord have mercy let us pray god of love you called saint catherine drexel to teach the message of the gospel and to bring the life of the eucharist to the native americans and african-american peoples by her prayers and example enable us to work for justice among the poor and the oppressed and keep us undivided in love in the eucharistic community of your church through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen moses said to the people today i have set before you life and prosperity death and doom if you obey the commandments of the lord your god which i enjoin on you today loving him and walking in his ways and keeping his commandments statues and decrees you will live and grow numerous and the lord your god will bless you in the land you are entering to occupy if however you turn away your hearts and will not listen but are led astray and adore and serve other gods i tell you now that you will certainly perish you will not have a long life and the land that you are crossing the jordan to enter and occupy i call heaven and the earth today to witness against you i have set before you life and death the blessing and the curse choose life then then you and your descendants may live by loving the lord your god heeding his voice and holding fast to him that you will mean life for you a long life for you to live on the land that the lord swore he would give to your fathers abraham isaac and jacob the word of the lord thanks be to god blessed are they who hope in the lord blessed are they who hope in the lord blessed the man who follows not the counsel of the wicked nor walks in the ways of sinners nor sits in the company of the insolent but delights in the law of the lord and meditates on his law day and night blessed are they who hope in the lord he is like a tree planted near running water that yields its fruit in due season and whoever leaves never fade whatever he does prospers blessed are they who hope in the lord not so the wicked not so they are like chaffs which the wind drives away for the lord watches over the way of the just but the way of the wicked vanishes blessed are they who hope in the lord glory and praise to you lord jesus christ glory and praise to you lord jesus christ repent says the lord the kingdom of heaven is at hand glory and praise to you lord jesus christ the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you o lord jesus said to his disciples the son of man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders the chief priests and the scribes and be killed and on the third day be raised then he said to them all if anyone wishes to come after me he must deny himself take up his cross daily and follow me for whoever wishes to save his life will lose it but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it what profit is there for one to gain the whole world yet lose or forfeit himself my brothers and sisters the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ i must say our first reading from the book of deuteronomy i think really puts on the line what this lenten season is all about for moses tells the people as they are about to cross over into the promised land the land that they've been journeying through for that long time through the desert and now what moses says today i have set before you life and prosperity death and doom in other words he's telling them that he has given them the way given them the way of life and prosperity which is to follow the commandments of god and giving them their choice remember we have free will and so he's given them that choice or the choice of death and do and what does moses say he says if you live and follow the commandments loving him and walking his ways and keeping his commandments statues and decrees you will live and grow very numerous you will be filled with prosperity however if you turn away your hearts and will not listen but led astray and adore and serve other gods you will certainly perish isn't that the state of the lenten season once again we have the opportunity to turn to god we have the choice to turn to jesus who will give us life to turn to jesus who gives us hope turn to jesus who gives us the forgiveness of sins or continue to walk away to be led astray to go down a path that leads to gloom and leads to destruction oh yes lent is this perfect season for you and i today the church lifts up for us also her wonderful saint saint catherine drexel she was born in philadelphia she was born in the year 1858 she of course was a very wealthy comes from a very wealthy wealthy family she learned the lessons of love of god and neighbor from her parents especially for the poor to care for them and what catherine did is she devoted her life and her fortune which she inherited to serving the poor and the oppressed especially the african-americans and also for the native americans those who were impoverished in philadelphia those who needed to be loved and cared for and needed assistance she then founded the missionary community of the sisters of the blessed sacrament all of this using the fortune that she inherited truly to care for the poor and to show them the eucharist to bring others to jesus isn't that what lent is all about to bring others to the lord as we continue this restless journey with christ that leads us to the cross but will also lead us to everlasting life saint catherine drexel was canonized in the year 2000 by saint john paul ii let us remember her and especially for her work and care for the poorest among us and now let us place our petitions before god let us pray today for pope francis for bishops and priests may god continue to bless their ministries as they lead the flock we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray for our world our leaders that they may find a way to allow peace in our earth especially in the ukraine we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray for judges may the holy spirit grant them wisdom in making just decisions we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray for our nation for an end to abortion and for an end to hatred we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all who feel unworthy of god's forgiveness may the lord open their hearts to the gift of mercy that he is eager to show we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for those in our virtual faith community may christ the lamb lead us in the spirit of penance through this lenten season we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the sick and the suffering the lonely the oppressed may we not may they know the healing touch of christ we pray to the lord for those who have died may jesus welcome them to the eternal joy of heaven we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for your needs your intentions that we bring to jesus today in the silence of our hearts we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer let's pray an act of spiritual communion my jesus i believe that you are present in the most blessed sacrament i love you above all things i desire to receive you into my soul since i cannot now receive you sacramentally come at least spiritually into my heart i embrace you as if you have already come i unite myself holy to you never permit me to be separated from you amen we now take all of our prayers we lift them up to god our father praying just as jesus taught our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil almighty and ever living god we humbly implore you to look with kindness upon the needs of your children we ask this through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and may almighty god bless you the father the son and the holy spirit amen go in peace glorify the lord by your life thanks be to god jesus remember me when you come into
