[Music] jesus calls us all the talmud of our life's wild restless seek day by day his sweet voice soundeth saying christian follow me as of all the heard it by the galilean lake turned from home and toil and kindred living [Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen the lord be with you r welcome to our morning liturgy here at the national shrine of the divine mercy to all those gathered here in their chapel and all of those all of you who are attending via the live stream this is the last mass and ordinary time before we begin our lenten journey tomorrow as ash wednesday gets underway and so we just contemplate how the lord invites us to enter into this lenten season as we begin the lenten journey tomorrow brothers and sisters let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words in what i have done and what i have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary ever virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life [Music] [Music] is [Music] [Music] let us pray grant us o lord we pray that the course of our world may be directed by your peaceful rule and that your church may rejoice untroubled in her devotion through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever r amen a reading from the first letter of saint peter beloved concerning the salvation of your souls the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and and investigated it investigating the time and circumstances that the spirit of christ within them indicated when it testified in in advance to the sufferings destined for christ and the glories to follow them it was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you with regard to the things that have now been announced to you by those who preach the good news to you through the holy spirit sent from heaven things into which angels long to look therefore gird up the loins of your mind live so soberly and set your hopes completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of jesus christ like obedient children do not act in compliance with the desires of your former ignorance but as he who called you is holy be yourselves in every aspect of your conduct for it is written be holy because i am holy the word of the lord thanks be to god the lord has made known his salvation the lord has made known his salvation sing to the lord a new song for he has done wondrous deeds his right hand has won victory for him his holy arm the lord has made known his salvation the lord has made his salvation known in the sight of the nations he has revealed his justice he has remembered his kindness and his faithfulness toward the house of israel the lord has made known his salvation all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation by our god sing joyfully to the lord all you lands break into song sing praise the lord the lord has made known his salvation hallelujah [Music] blessed are you father lord of heaven and earth you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of thy kingdom [Music] [Music] the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to mark glory to you o lord peter began to say to jesus we have given up everything and followed you jesus said amen i say to you there is no one who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands for my sake and for the sake of the gospel who will not receive a hundred times more now in this present age houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands with persecutions and eternal life in the age to come but many that are first will be last and the last will be first the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ be holy because i am holy these are the words we hear in today's scripture from the first pope saint peter speaking to us in his letter be holy because i am holy this is what he speaks of the lord who we know in leviticus and the old testament through moses he said you know i wish moses to gather the whole israelite community and this is what you are to say to them be holy because i the lord your god am holy and so we hear through moses we hear through the first pope saint peter this words of god that he wishes his people his chosen vine his beloved body his mystical body his sacred spouse his chosen people you and me to be holy to share in the very own holiness of god we read in this first reading also saint peter's speaking of those who prophesied about the sufferings but also the glories that are to be revealed in christ and it says they searched and investigated the circumstances and the times that the spirit of christ within them indicated and so as christians has baptized into christ we have been baptized into the same spirit the same spirit of holiness that filled christ in his life is the same spirit that fills us that's the dignity of our baptism that the holy spirit lives inside of us as jesus said i am the vine you are the branches and so those who are closely united to the vine will bear the same fruit that the vine does if we're branches united to that vine who is christ and what is that sap that is flowing through the vine and into our branches that we are it's the holy spirit and it's this holy spirit which is filling the christian people as lent approaches we know that there's this call once more this invitation from the lord year by year by year lent comes around again but each time each year it finds us in a different place in our hearts in a different place in our own journey with jesus maybe we've drifted far away maybe we feel like we're drawing closer wherever we are it's a new moment it's a new beginning in our walk with christ and that call once again resounds be holy because i the lord your god i'm holy and this is that universal call to holiness and we know that in the most recent great council of the church the second vatican council they put this forward as this basic charge for the church for the bride of christ which is you and me the people of god this universal call to holiness and we hear also in this reading that saint peter says as he who called you is holy be holy yourselves in every aspect of your conduct and it says as obedient children do not act in compliance with the desires of your former ignorance but as he who called you is holy be holy in every aspect of your conduct so there the voice of peter inspiring us to integrate in every aspect of our life in our rising and our walking through the day in our sleeping to to live that life of christ we hear through the voice of peter once more from saint john paul ii saint pope john paul ii who echoes this universal call to holiness and he wrote what's called an apostolic exhortation basically the apostles exhorting and saying here we go this is what i want you to focus on look at this and take take good note pay good attention to this and he wrote it's called christi fidelis the latin but it's basically on the vocation and mission of the lay faithful in the church and in the world and this is one of the key lines that he brings out in this document this is saint john paul ii he says everyone in the church precisely because they are members receive and thereby share in the common vocation to holiness in the fullness of this title and on equal part with all other members of the church the lay faithful are called to holiness it's directly quoting lumengencium this document all the faithful of christ of whatever rank or status are called to the fullness of christian life and to the perfection of charity all of christ's followers are invited and bound to pursue holiness and the perfect fulfillment of their own state of life i think there can be a common misconception in the church that only priests are supposed to seek holiness only religious are supposed to really seek holiness only those who are called the special vocations are called to really be holy the rest the lay faithful you know we'll do our best but you know maybe maybe not shoot for the heights of sanctity but what do we hear from the first pope from peter from the voice of peter through saint john paul ii from the lord himself everyone be holy because i the lord your god i'm holy lay faithful alike clergy alike everybody in the body of christ is called to this radiant holiness to image christ in their life to walk with them to suffer with him to die with him to rise with him everyone is called to be a saint how many of you here desire to be a saint how many of you here desire to be a saint now i can't see your hands on live stream but i'm trusting that many of you are raising your hand as well and i think that's the call of the lord he wants that to be a a burning flame in our hearts that lord i want to be holy maybe i don't know exactly what that looks like maybe i don't know exactly the concrete steps to take but the desire is enough to begin to ask the lord lord how do i be holy how do i be like you how do i follow you how do i live my life in a deeper way we're not called to mediocrity but called to greatness the greatness that belongs to the sons and daughters of god this is our dignity in christ and as i mentioned in the beginning we're beginning the lenten season and this is a time to enter once more into the the very roots the heart of our faith the paschal mystery jesus himself as god made man walked this earth he showed us the way i am the way the truth and the life if we follow him if we walk with him journey with him in the desert journey with him to the cross and journey with him through the cross to the resurrection we too will share in that glorious splendor that is to be revealed in christ that we hear about the first reading there is a powerful line that we have actually in our sacristy right when we walk out to to begin to celebrate the mass and i think i've seen it in many other places as well but it says o priest of god celebrate this mass as if it were your first mass your last mass your only mass and i think we can echo that in our journey this lenten season people of god christian faithful sons and daughters of god celebrate this lent enter into this land journey into this lent as if it were your first lent your last lent your only lent and i think if we do this the lord will show us we have a sincere desire lord teach me teach me to be holy show me what it looks like to be holy how can i be holy in every aspect of my conduct not just the part of me not just a little bit of me how can my whole being be on fire with the spirit living in me in every one of my actions and so imitate christ in my life wherever i find myself so we ask saint peter for his intercession to fill us with that fire of holiness we ask for the intercession of saint pope john paul ii to fill us with that fire that spirit of holiness we ask our blessed mother who knew well that spirit living in her that called holiness that they may powerfully intercede for each one of us and all of us today as we enter into the journey tomorrow in lent that this may be that fire that burns in our heart throughout the lenten season as we hear from the voice of our heavenly father be holy as i the lord your god am holy now let us stand and with great confidence offer our prayers very simply as as children to our beloved father for all church leaders may the example of jesus inspire them in humble service of love for god's people let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for those who hold public office may god grant them strength compassion and wisdom in their duties let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for those persecuted for their faith may the holy spirit bless them with fortitude let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all of us gathered here may the love of christ inspire us to share his love with our neighbors let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the faithful departed and for all the souls in purgatory may jesus welcome them to the great wedding feast of the lamb this day let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer prayer for all the members of the association of marian helpers and the conf fraternity of the immaculate conception both living and deceased and for all the intentions they have entrusted to us as well as all those who call a right to us may the lord favorably hear their prayers and strengthen them in faith hope and love let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we also pray for the conflict between russia and ukraine and all those who are involved and associated with this and all those who have already died in the conflict that they may rest in peace and that the lord's mercy providence and his peace may bless this situation and bring about a peace there and in our whole world let us pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer prayer we do ask the lord this day for that grace for the desire for holiness a deep desire to follow christ and to become holy in every aspect of our conduct let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer prayer and we pray for all the silent intentions that we hold within our hearts for these intentions from for all of our intentions we entrust them to our blessed mother as we pray hail mary full of grace the lord is with thee blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb jesus holy mary mother of god pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death amen with great confidence and trust we offer all these prayers to you heavenly father and we make them through jesus christ our lord amen [Music] blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you fruits of the earth and work of human hands it will become for us the bread of life blessed be god forever [Music] by the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share the divinity of christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity blessed are you lord god of all creation but through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you fruit of the vine and work of human hands it will become our spiritual drink blessed be god forever humble spirit and contrite heart may we be accepted by you o lord and may our sacrifice in your sight this day be pleasing to you lord god wash me out for my iniquities and cleanse me from my sin pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept this sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church god who provide gifts to be offered to your name and count our oblations as signs of our desire to serve you with devotion we ask of your mercy that what you grant us that what you grant as the source of merit may also help us to attain merit's reward through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we lift them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord his death we celebrate in love his resurrection we confess with living faith and his coming in glory we await with unwavering hope and so with all the angels and saints we praise you as without end we acclaim [Music] [Applause] [Music] glory [Music] is [Music] you are indeed holy oh lord and all you have created rightly gives you praise for through your son our lord jesus christ by the power and working of the holy spirit you give life to all things and make them holy and you never cease to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name therefore o lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration that they may become the body and blood of your son our lord jesus christ at whose command we celebrate these mysteries for on the night he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you [Music] in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me [Music] the mystery of faith we proclaim your death o lord and profess your resurrection [Music] you come again [Music] therefore o lord as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven and as we look forward to his second coming we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice look we pray upon the oblation of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you willed to reconcile us to yourself grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and filled with his holy spirit may become one body one spirit in christ may he make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect especially with the most blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs and with all the saints on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help may this sacrifice of our reconciliation we pray o lord advance the peace and salvation of all the world be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim church on earth with your servant francis our pope and william our bishop the order of bishops all the clergy and the entire people you have gained for your own listen graciously to the prayers of this family whom you have summoned before you and your compassion o merciful father gather to yourself all your children scattered throughout the world to our departed brothers and sisters and to all who are pleasing to you at their passing from this life give kind admittance to your kingdom there we hope to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory through christ our lord through whom you bestow on the world all that is good through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever [Music] [Music] at the savior's command informed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who arts in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the separated from you amen and from the diary of saint faustina entry 605 o holy trinity eternal god i thank you for allowing me to know the greatness and the various degrees of glory to which souls attain oh what a great difference of depth in the knowledge of god there is between one degree and another oh if people could only know this oh my god if i were thereby able to able to attain one more degree i would gladly suffer all the torments of the martyrs put together truly all those torments seem as nothing to be to me compared with the glory that is awaiting awaiting us for all eternity oh
