[Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the grace of our lord jesus christ and the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with you all sorry we're starting a little late today we're training a backup cameraman thank you very much mike brothers and sisters let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words in what i have done and what i have failed to do through my faults through my faults through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary ever virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life let us pray almighty ever living god look with compassion on our weakness and ensure us your protection by stretching forth your right hand of your majesty through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god for ever and ever amen a reading from the book of the prophet isaiah thus says the lord if you remove from your midst oppression false accusation and malicious speech if you bestow your bread on the hungry and satisfy the afflicted then light shall rise for you in the darkness and the gloom shall become for you like midday then the lord will guide you always and give you plenty even on the parched land he will renew your strength and you shall be like a watered garden like a spring whose water never fails the ancient ruins shall be rebuilt for your sake and the foundations from ages past you shall raise up repairer of the breach they shall call you restorer of ruined homelands if you hold back your food on the sabbath from following your own pursuits on my holy day if you call the sabbath a delight and the lord's holy day honorable if you honor it by not following your ways seeking your own interests or speaking with malice then you shall delight in the lord and i will make you ride on the hikes of the earth i will nourish you with the heritage of jacob your father for the mouth of the lord has spoken the word of the lord [Applause] teach me your ways o lord that i may walk in your truth teach me your praise o lord that i may walk in your truth incline your ear o lord answer me for i am afflicted and poor keep my life for i am devoted to you save your servant who trusts in you you are my god teach me your ways o lord that i may walk in your truth have mercy on me o lord for to you i call all the day gladden the soul of your servant for to you o lord i lift up my soul teach me your way o lord that i may walk in your truth for you o lord are good and forgiving abounding in kindness to all who call upon you hearken o lord to my prayer and attend to the sound of my pleading teach me your way o lord that i may walk in your truth praise to you lord jesus christ king of endless glory to you lord jesus christ king of endless glory i take no pleasure in the death of the wicked man says the lord but rather in his conversion that he may live praise to you lord jesus christ the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you jesus saw a tax collector named levi sitting at the customs post he said to him follow me and leaving everything behind he got up and followed him then levi gave a great banquet for him at his house and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were at table with them the pharisees and their scribes complained to his disciples saying why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners jesus said to them in reply those who are healthy do not need a physician but the sick do i have come not to call the righteous to repentance but sinners the gospel of the lord raise you lord what's the gospel our sins be wiped away in our first reading in the scriptures the lord is telling us don't look down on people and speak badly of them but reach out to those in need and help them help them in everything that they need in kindness and in generosity and they will look upon you as heroes and as people who lift up their society and god himself will pour his blessings upon you you will make him very very happy by reaching out and helping everyone around you in need in our gospel today jesus is doing exactly that he's reaching out to people in need and oddly enough it's the pharisees the holy men the people of god who are taking him down for that who are saying why are you spending time and eating meals with tax collectors and sinners now tax collectors were considered terrible sinners uh because and it's not tax collectors like we have tax collectors people who collect money from the community and then the money goes into uh repairing roads and building hospitals and doing good things tax collectors uh in those days rome was a uh israel was a conquered nation a a vassal of rome and they needed to pay tribute uh literally to pay tribute to and so they collected money periodically and set it to the emperor so that rome would not attack and wipe them out that was the whole intention that was the agreement and so they needed their own brothers and sisters well brothers anyway i guess their sisters didn't do it but they needed their brothers to to collect the taxes and to send it to rome they were authorized to do so however first of all they were looked down upon because they were collecting money from their brothers and sisters to send it to their roman overlords and they would look down upon that i mean even though it was necessary and agreed upon they were looked down upon because of that but on top of that they needed to eat and drink as well right so they would charge not just the basic tax but a little bit more so they would be able to survive as well right and the main tax they gave to rome and the rest they kept to support themselves and yet many found well if i add a little on i'll be able to survive if i had a lot on i'll be able to survive very well and most tax collectors seem to have gotten very wealthy because they were over charging their brothers and sisters and they could do it because rome said send me what we want keep what you need keep whatever else you have so they were actually working with the power of rome behind them in order to rob their brothers and sisters and to become very very wealthy and i've heard it said that many would hire thugs we would call them to ensure that the people paid what they were being told to paid so they were looked upon very often as gangsters you know they'll pay up what you need to pay or else and consider very very great sinners for all these reasons any one of those reasons was enough but all those reasons together for so many of them that they were hated and considered terrible terrible sinners and here is jesus coming in and joining with calling to himself and and and sharing sacred meals with these sinners and other sinners and the pharisees say how can you set a need with sinners holy meals you're sharing them with sinners because it looks like you're throwing yourself in with them like you're one of them you're supposed to be this holy man yet you're hanging out with sinners and of course jesus tells them you know it's it's the sick who need a physician i'm looking after people who are ill they need me that's his answer to them but there's a bigger answer than that because part of the answer is i am throwing in with them i am claiming to be one of them and of course the pharisees the sadducees the scribes they would never really understand that they would say oh that's a horrible horrible thing but that is what jesus does the son of god god himself became human still god but fully human he's throwing in with us and every one of us is a sinner of varying degrees but enough that we all earn eternal damnation and he is throwing himself in with us and becoming fully embracing us becoming fully one of us yes to heal us and so that he can injustice take our sins upon himself and pay for our sins so that we don't have to because we never could but he being divine and being infinite he can pay for us so yeah he's throwing in with us he's throwing in with the worst sinners and the holiest men because every even the holiest men who walk the earth are sinners which includes these pharisees these pharisees are saying you shouldn't go near sinners you should hang out with only us we only hang out with holy men not sinners we're not sinners or barely every now and then i'll say something which is slightly not true maybe but that's nothing they say and jesus knows and we can see after two thousand years that they're amongst the worst of the sinners because they're lying to themselves they're lying to their people they're lying to god they're saying we're doing all of this for god how wonderful am i huh yeah yeah and as uh jesus told us when you do god's work don't praise yourself don't go out in the middle of the field or in the middle of the the road and stand on the soapbox and let everyone see how wonderful you are do it in secret so that god will see it but don't you know when you do great things have people praise you for how wonderful you are you've already been paid for it he's saying pharisees scribes the sadducees are hypocrites so many of them saying they're doing it for god but really they're doing it for themselves and you know you've heard how all good things come from god and they teach that and that the wealthy people the powerful people they receive that from god which is true and they say therefore they must be very very holy which is not necessarily true and so they like to hang out with these holy wealthy powerful people and hey that's good for them too that's a problem that's a problem and the pharisees and the scribes and the sadducees are all people and all people sin except jesus and because of jesus mary all other people sin and deserve eternal damnation jesus saves us all all of us who ask to be saved who try to turn from our sins and give them to our jesus he's here as the physician to help all of us and none of us is better than anyone else i used to tell my nephew there's nobody in the world who is better than you and there's nobody in the world who is lower than you one of those left and right-handed uh compliments but but it's true all our brothers and sisters around the world are equal to us no matter who we feel we are whether we're rich and powerful or poor and and sinners no one's better than we are no one's worse than we are but when we cling to jesus then we are in jesus and that doesn't make us better than other people but he does lift us up but he's trying to lift all people up let us remember that let us as our first reading tells us reach out and help all people don't speak badly about people don't even think of ourselves as better than other people but let us reach out especially during this time of lent let us turn away from the things of this world and the views of this world and the desires of this world and embrace the things of god the views of god and what god wishes for all his children in the world let us help to fulfill that to live it and to bring the rest of his children to live it as well trusting in the lord's mercy let us humbly turn to god to present our needs for the church throughout the world for all who have been anointed her leaders and for all who share in the one baptism we profess let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all nations may the witness of committed christians foster an increased respect for human life let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all who those who thirst for light in situations of great darkness may god's love lead them to everlasting life let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for our faith community of lady of lords here and around the world may god help us engage in our lenten sacrifices with sincerity and faithfulness let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all those who have died may they be welcomed into the eternal joy by the angels and saints in heaven let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for those who are suffering from pain and oppression and war and especially for those people in ukraine and all families here in america and around the world who are connected to ukraine that god may give peace life health and justice to that part of the world and everywhere let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer our holy mother has asked us to pray for sinners and so we do pray for the redemption of all sinners everywhere let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer and we pray for all the holy souls in purgatory let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer good and gracious god hear these prayers we offer you today through jesus christ our lord amen [Music] blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you fruit of the earth and work of human hands it will become for us the bread of life by the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share in the divinity of christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you fruit of the vine and work of human hands will become our spiritual drink blessed be god forever with humble spirit and contrite heart may we be accepted by you o lord and may our sacrifice and your sight this day be pleasing to you lord god wash me lord for my iniquity and cleanse me of my sins pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice in our hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church accept we pray o lord the sacrifice of conciliation and praise and grant that cleansed by its working we may offer minds well pleasing to you through christ our lord amen the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord for by your gracious gift each year your faithful await the sacred paschal feasts and the joy of minds made pure so that more eagerly intent on prayer and on the works of charity and participating in the mysteries by which they have been reborn they may be led to the fullness of grace that you bestow on your sons and daughters and so with the angels and archangels with thrones and dominions and with all the hosts and powers of heaven we sing the hymn of your glory as without end we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me [Music] the mystery of faith save us savior of the world for by your cross and resurrection you have set us free therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and john our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever [Laughter] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ you said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign for ever and ever amen the peace of the lord be with you always lamb of god you take away behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word my soul shall be healed may the body of christ keep me safe for eternal life may the blood of christ keep me safe for eternal life so the body requests our spiritual communion my jesus i believe that you are present in the most holy sacrament i love you above all things and i desire to receive you into my soul since i cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally come at me spiritually into my heart i embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself holy to you never permit me to be separated from you amen [Music] okay the body so what has passed our lips as food oh lord may we possess impurity of
