D7 DOZER NOT STARTED IN 20+ YEARS! WILL IT START?

[Music] yeah that's definitely two of you this will build a serious road with our first major road project complete it's become clear we're going to need a bigger piece of equipment if we want to get this road done by the end of summer our neighbor reached out and said if we could get his old dozer running we could use it to help speed things along so our neighbor told me that he last used this 15 or 20 years ago to dig a pawn behind his house it ran great at that time he parked it and it hasn't been touched since we admittedly know nothing about dozers so we did phone a friend dave's going to be here in a few minutes he knows these dozers inside and out and he's pretty confident we're going to get it running today at least he can tell us which levers do what babe it's got room for two people and boone [Music] there are a lot of leopards [Music] i just looked up for the first time it's huge i can't see a thing this is gonna be awesome i'm kind of wondering if enabling reckless riley to buy a dozer is a bad idea [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] so [Music] here's where the fuel comes into the pony motor step one is going to be to get the pony motor started it's got a small two-cylinder engine that's gasoline you get the two cylinder engine running that's what starts the big engine there is no electric starter on this oh yeah good spark okay let's pull the plugs off and put a little gas in each one i'm feeling very optimistic dave just told me that this could be a ten thousand dollar mistake though by the time we're said and done show us your contraption yeah hey he's never pretty wow it's like complete diagrams for every single piece of the whole thing cool you already got electrocuted no it's got spark oh it's a magneto slower you turn it skeeter already warned me last night that i was i was going to electrocute myself no matter what [Laughter] everything else disengaged like guys [Music] got a tree down back my face up only pull back on it because if it kicks and you're pushing it'll kick against you okay so just give it to your one way and then it you can let it go and if it ever fires and runs back fires let go oh that's a good thing really is that water or gas there's no compression whatsoever uh no it's stuck up now well dave found a problem so at least we found a problem that's always step one we've got compression now the valve's unstuck we've got spark we're putting fuel directly in it so it should start there's like puffs coming huh i saw a little puff come out that's a good thing that's motivating oh oh that was the best one yet yeah oh oh yeah we're gonna run propane all three fuels yeah fuel yeah we're going to try to hook our temporary can up to the carburetor and see if we can bread and feel that way but of course this was clogged and i found this the gas tank on this thing we're very suspicious of so we're bypassing the gas tank entirely and using that one gallon oil can instead after what felt like hours of cranking we were starting to get discouraged riley had spent countless hours watching videos like this one and we were expecting something by now it's raining we're not getting any closer to starting this thing well but i'm sorry i'm really i know you really wanted to drive a dozer home today today just wasn't the day to start that thing we have some research to do and give it another shot another day even dozer dave's a little stumped by what's going on and the pony motor's got fuel it's got compression and it's got spark so why is it firing [Music] we ended yesterday pretty discouraged not knowing if we were going to be able to get this dozer started i've done some research i have some ideas and we're going to give it a whirl it's the morning i'm opening a bottle of wine but not for the confirm that we have spark we have fuel we have compression everything we need to make it run then i started thinking what if the timing's not right so today we're gonna see if we can re-time the magneto and make sure the spark is happening at the right time there's a good chance i'm gonna have to electrocute myself with the magneto to know it's working okay you guys riley said that it's time for the wine cork so i'm putting the wine cork in the spark plug hole so that's the number one cylinder we're gonna crank the pony motor over until the cork pops out that way we know we're at top dead center of the compression cycle okay if it's not popping out then then we don't have any compression my biggest fear is that we're gonna actually get this thing started and it's gonna drive away that'd be a good bad problem to have because it means we got it started but also it means that it would be driving away which would not be good we found the compression cycle for the number one cylinder now we line up the timing marks for the magneto reset the magneto then we're going to know that this thing is at least timed right so we're not fighting more than one problem at a time okay i think it's lined up now we're going to pull the magneto off and try to make sure that we have spark on the number one cylinder at this point [Music] it's pretty clean in here really when this little metal patch hits one of these contacts that's when the spark fires the rest of the time this is non-conductive so this is the part that matters that it's clean [Music] as the engine rotates then boom we get a spark here's the marks there's this tick mark in that tick mark we line those two up because that's when it's creating a spark for cylinder number one we've got cylinder number one at top dead center right where the spark's supposed to happen theoretically this is going to guarantee that the timing is right based on riley's research we think this machine was made somewhere between 1944 and 1955 but we have yet to find a serial plate on it that would help us identify for sure i also i think it's an earlier one because a lot of the later ones came with electric starter motors on the pony motor and this one doesn't have that so we're gonna hook the plug on crank it over and we're going to see if we get a spark oh i saw a spark now hopefully we have spark at the right time oh should i just crank on it a couple times yeah i think he should with some ether yeah it says starts stubborn engines fast i'm gonna spray some starting fluid down into the carburetor bowl or i guess through the intake and uh give her give her a whirl [Music] i think it's time for the drill idea walt and carol i don't know if this is what you had in mind when you let me this drill i have some questions this is probably a terrible idea riley ran a couple different ideas by dozer dave and a few of them he said were absolutely bad ideas this one he said might be a good idea we're gonna give this a shot we need to crank this motor over faster and for longer than what we're getting all we get right now is basically one compression cycle and one spark so basically riley's gonna set it up to simulate it like there is an electric starter on it [Music] how are you going to grab it now ah i broke the pull start off of it i've been waiting for this to happen look i even taped a new piece of pull rope right here don't think the generator repair is going to be something we're doing right here it looks pretty involved taking the generator fully apart [Music] do [Music] i'm going to be here holding a drill and this is going to be spinning around trying to hurt me and if it starts the little pawl the spring may not kick this up enough and it may start engaged and continue spinning even after the engine starts okay i'm not going to push down dude i'm just going to spin it it's not engaged that's really fast oh my god okay wire up and over this gotta keep this out of the way we're gonna push down [Music] not strong enough dang okay maybe we do need a whole hog to do this plan it's not strong enough enough ether to kill a pony did you just make that saying up yeah that's awful not a good plan it's not strong enough huh back to hand crank all right riley's gonna hand crank it some more [Music] i have a really hard time accepting to feed on this because i know that everything's working like it's supposed to be and all the parts are here it just seems like it should start well the tactics have escalated a bit dozer dave is back and we're gonna try to pull start this thing quite a few things in the way that we need to get moved out of the way first so i've got the truck and we are gonna hitch up to a few things and make some space to hopefully pull it and hopefully start it [Music] [Music] let's go ask carter move before we try to pull the dozer [Music] does it make you feel safe that you sit on the fuel tank while you drive it oh what are you talking about dave there's a there's a little bit of fuel yeah there's something in it [Music] [Music] do you think it's gonna work it's either gonna work brilliantly or we're not even gonna get an inch out enough shark's not big enough and neither was the strap sometimes you win and sometimes even plan d doesn't work i don't know if we're gonna come back another day to keep working on this thing i'd sure love to see it run i think it would be awesome to use around the property we've got two days into it at this point with not a whole lot of hope at all um so we're gonna go back to the drawing
