well they couldn't figure out how to get the badges of the names right we have a chevrolet prism not a geoprism not a toyota corolla but a chevrolet prism and uh the customer states that uh it vibrates or something while driving so we're gonna we're gonna head on out onto the uh the public motorway operate this vehicle under normal operating conditions and see if we cannot duplicate uh the nature of their concern rattly that's not cool it has the service engine shaped light turned on oh yeah this thing's definitely been around the block a time or two let's see what's on the clock looking like oh only 80 000 interesting okay well regardless of how much it's been driven according to the odo meter we're going to go out and go for a ride real quick and uh see what we cannot determinate to be the uh the nature of their concern so i didn't think i had the door shut all the way and um i appeared to be held captive oh there we go i got it i was stuck okay let's get out of here this is a no wake zone it's a beautiful sunny day here in rainey florida we have a average relative humidity today of about 86 percent and it's also about 86 degrees so we are in our prime comfort zone right now okay i'm not feeling any driveline vibrations let's apply some some breaks and then we'll see if that's the nature of their concern oh yeah yep i feel it in the pedal and i feel it in the steering wheel usually when you feel a vibration the steering wheel that's going to be caused by surface thickness variation or run out in the front rotors if you feel it in the pedal that's usually feedback that you're receiving from the rear brakes and i happen to feel it in both so i'm going to make sure that when i get back to the shop i'm going to do an inspection on both front and rear axles after being in the car for a little while i'm starting to feel the uh the upper part of my legs and the back is a little wet and i recall having put this window up slightly when when i got in this car i i think it rained in this car while it was parked in the parking lot and now i'm i'm a little agitated because i don't have a change of pants um this is very actually very embarrassing but i think i'll put it on the internet anyway um i think my pants are going to be wet for the remainder of this day which fortunately is only five more hours uh however i'll be i'll be sloshing around um in a condition of a moist derriere until then because i'm just sitting here soaking up water through my shorts yeah okay we've got no traffic behind us i can see you again we have no traffic behind us so i'm going to go ahead and get on these brakes a little hard and oh yeah i feel vibrations all over the place um i actually do feel that the pedal vibration is more profound than the steering wheel vibration so i think i'll go ahead and pull those apart first i believe this car should have drum brakes out back i could be mistaken and it may it may have discs i'm actually kind of hoping it's drums because i don't think i've done a drum brake job on the channel like ever but uh i guess we will see when i want to get this up into the air okay right now is the proper time to pull out into traffic that of course was sarcasm and uh nobody should pull out into front of traffic in front of an f550 truck i know what happens and i know what happens to people who are driving those f550s but don't do as i say uh or don't do as i do actually that's probably neither one of those is probably a good idea unfortunately due to the manner in which our legal system functions uh there i'm sure there's somebody out there that will pull out into traffic and could potentially injure themselves or others by doing such things and then they would go well ray said so which in which case uh somebody would be asking me why i have instructed people to pull into traffic so yeah don't don't do that and why are these people hovering around my stuff what is this there's a customer touching my tools why are you touching my crap i'm still stuck all right i'll be right back i'm gonna go see what these guys want okay that that guy was the owner of another car that i worked on and he was here because he wanted to collect his old spark plugs coils and uh fuel injectors they went to his f-150 and that is why they were rummaging through my tool cart so that that issue is just now been solved let's see what makes the go go power in this thing oh yeah this is totally a toyota at least it's powered by a toyota this uh intake manifold is the giveaway i believe this is a 1.8 liter and [Music] yeah the sticker says so that's a yeah this is a 1.8 liter toyota motor powering this geo chevrolet metro oh and i can prove it too right there it says toyota right there on the alternator okay yep there it is toyota toyota chevrolet geoprism moving up let's see if these tires are any good okay not out of round oh look these are drum brakes let's get these uh wheels and stuff off oh gravity caught him with my foot heck attack style i know head mount i have one [Applause] oh yeah uh oh that's not bueno it only has 75 of the nuts holding the wheel on that is unacceptable all right i'm gonna start with the known problem area first look at that dust fly off of there hold my breath okay [Music] all right let's see what's in here um newish kind of ish pads on a old crusty rotor okay that's a that's our classic pad slap that doesn't look too too happy right there let's move around uh to the left front we'll pull all the rest of these wheels off and do an inspection see what's going on with the rear brakes especially got the nuts off the left front yeah same thing we've got a lot of rust right here which is encroaching onto the pad area same thing on the edge of the rotor this is probably the primary cause of the vibration the pitting here is very deep the left rear is interesting because this is a pretty clean face right here however it's also been sealed off sort of sealed off by the uh the wheel being on there we have quite a bit of surface rust on the rest of it it blazed that looks pretty good back here i do have some concern for uh the right rear because all these lug nuts are shiny and newish and they're not like the others i can't say i have much concern and i'm wondering why they are not like the others maybe they got lost that's why uh yeah we're replacing those i don't even think this was the right thread yeah look at all that metal right there [Music] yeah that one's pretty boogered up you can see where the threads were starting to peel away from the stud so right off the bat i'm gonna be doing a couple studs some metal chunks in there [Applause] these look fairly decent as well good let's shoes there's no fluid coming out cylinders look good okay all righty so there's a there's a couple ways i want to go about approaching the future of what i'm going to do with this car i can see very clearly that the friction material on both of the rear drums and the front pads for that matter are in decent shape i would consider these uh these stripped-out studs a safety issue so i would insist that both the stud and the one up front be replaced with the new lug nut um in an effort to reduce the expense of repair on this vehicle given the concern that they had which was the pulsating and shaking thing i am not going to recommend replacing the the rear shoes or the front pads um what i think we can do here is just get away with replacing both front rotors and both rear drums and that's going to keep the labor cost and it's going to keep the parts cost down as low as possible this particular vehicle is not um it's not overly expensive it's a very low cost economy vehicle and i imagine that the owner would like to keep their cost of maintenance as low as possible so i'm not gonna i'm not gonna go like full monty on rebuild the brakes i think i'm just going to recommend that we do you know what's necessary to to solve their problem and up the safety level ever so slightly by making sure that the wheels are bolted on all the way so i'm going to go head over to the service desk and let everybody know um exactly what i found and what i think about uh what should be done moving forward and we will see what they would like to do with it man you can't even make this stuff up you guys will not believe the way this conversation just went this guy said that he just replaced the front rotors and he just replaced the rear drum like not long ago that's what he said that's what was communicated to me i mean i don't know what you guys think but this does not look like it's been just replaced he was actually argumentative slightly uh with my service man uh he came back uh agitated and was like this guy you know double check this he said he just replaced this stuff um this one looks a little bit fresher than the other one uh but it's heavily rusted everywhere this thing has not just been replaced at all um so i i don't even know if tell this guy i'm trying to trying to save him a buck or two and finish or fix what he wants fixed and he wants to he wants to act like what we found out is not the right thing and i mean i get these have been replaced at some point because they are kind of shiny but i i felt the vibe they're they're out of brown all right guys well uh we can't win them all can we um after a little bit of back and forth action with this guy uh talking about what i found and what i think we should do uh he has decided that he's not going to do any repair work on this car and he would just like his oils changed and uh and that's gonna be the end of it um he has also declined to have these studs uh removed and replaced um we're pulling out the waiver for him to sign that basically acknowledges that he may be operating this vehicle with uh an unsafe condition and um again that applies to both axles because this is going to cross thread like crazy going back on but uh he said go ahead and put it back on so that's what we're gonna do um i don't like it i don't approve of it but this isn't my car and it drove in it drove in like this uh and florida law states if it drove in like that it can drive out like that so i'm just gonna spill and fill this oil and uh throw this thing back together and that's going to be that but stay tuned because i'm going to hammer these lug nuts back on on that cross threaded one for sure because he specifically stated he wants that put back on the car if it threads on he said run the thing down and and put it on so that's that's what's gonna happen here he has also slightly changed uh the way he was describing the condition um after we told him what was causing the vibration he said that the vibration really wasn't his concern and he was stating that the brakes apply themselves as he's driving um he said another shop told him that it needs a proportioning valve and i don't even think this car has a proportioning valve but he believes that he should have a proportioning valve installed but he's just going to go ahead and have the uh whatever other guy is working on this car install set proportioning valve um actually i'm going to take a look around and see if i can see a p-valve on this car i i don't think that it has one it's been a very long time since i've actually seen one of those and even longer since i've seen one uh that has failed but i guess when i let it down i'll i'll give a peek around under the hood where all the the brake lines are around the um the abs pump and you know i'll see if i can scope one out but i doubt that it's got one that's not looking very good either it's brown and it was low but whatever's yeah i guess oh it's oily get out of here gross let's let that down so i can see again well regardless of the situation at hand i need to get this done um got a new crush washer on it it did have like a plastic washer thing on there um i don't have those exact plastic washers but this pressure washer will suffice that's probably the uh the cause of this oily down here oh and click i said click okay yeah here's the there's the old unit right there you can see all the cracks in it i'm surprised it held oil at all but it did all right time to toss the wheels when i'm not back on uh only three lug nuts for this front wheel because that's safe and no there's there's no legislation here that uh prevents me from from doing this like i said it came in like that it can go out like that i i wish things were kind of different but that's this is the way that they are now if this were a commercial vehicle that would be a different story all right i went around got the driver's side wheels back on and now for the moment we've all been waiting for time to uh time to put this wheel back on yeah i know that one goes on there i'm trying to find whichever threads are the least boogered up out of all of these and put them on their corresponding lug nuts i think that one goes there that one's got the nasty piece torn out of it i think that went on the broken lug nut with a strip lug nut yeah okay okay that's bolted on can't believe i just did that all right this car is on the ground now i just need to throw a couple ports of lubricant in there and we can get this thing out of here and by couple i mean more than two all right that's uh 4.2 quarts which i believe is the specified amount let's go stopping the engine and let the filter prime and then we'll check level [Music] we didn't pre-fill the filter yep right there the full mark we're good to go all right toyota time for you and i to part ways [Music] hmm the hood won't stay closed this car is like perpetually broken the cable's stuck all right let's see if that works oh the rain's coming in sideways it's stinging rain big old fat rain sometimes the rain seems to come straight up from underneath oh yeah bright sunshiny day okay well this thing's done um i'm not going to bring it outside because that means i have to go outside in the rain and i'm not going to do that so dude can come pick this car from here so all that being said like thank you guys for watching this video
