Creativity Reaches New Limits At Red Bull Soapbox Race Finland 2019

the capital of Finland a hub of modern living and the perfect spot to see the breathtaking Northern Lights but today aurora borealis can take a hike there's a new spectacle in town as 70 teams of thrill-seekers Duke it out in the ultimate battle of creativity showmanship and speed who will emerge champion and whose hopes and dreams will vanish into thin air this is the Red Bull soapbox race Helsinki welcome to Finland home of Santa a thousand lakes and of course the sauna small sauna this is the perfect place to show off your huge appreciation of Art Nouveau architecture this is very evident in the beautiful city of Helsinki one of the finest examples is the stunning Hoover lakitu streets dubbed the most colorful Street in Helsinki this place is an insta paradise you're right quick selfie nice look Finland is also home to the world mobile phone throwing championships which is a sport that is exactly what it sounds like whoa Helsinki was also home to one of the world's finest symphonic composers Jean Sibelius who was so good the Finns built this 24 ton 600 pipe monument in his honor I've got to say as designs go it's pretty out there you think that's out there wait till you see what's in store at the Red Bull soapbox race which is descended on the magnificent Observatory Hill in Helsinki for another day of creative and chaotic Red Bull soapbox racing in front of thousands of fans so to get us all up to speed he's a quick reminder of what today is all about and what we've got to look forward to oh there's your phone brilliant what kind of text for two likes for the photos not that good championing eccentricity since the year 2000 the Red Bull soapbox races amateur teams of friends family and workmates racing barmy homemade creations down the course littered with obstacles all with just gravity to power over the years over a hundred and twenty events have been held in amazing locations in every corner of the globe each race attracts fans in their thousands hungry for speed these guys are silliness Hobbs Miss Philippa and the art spectacular crash fun is always the order of the day but this is a contest and to decide a winner each team is scored on three categories firstly a panel of judges marks the creativity and craftsmanship of each soapbox look at that that is mighty pretzel then points are given for a 30 second performance immediately before the run and finally those scores are added to the total time taken to complete the course this is gonna be a good time spectacular sorry if they complete the course get more overall points than anyone else and you've just earned yourself Universal bragging rights as Red Bull soapbox race champions there's just one thing standing in the way the course itself and this one cutting through Observatory Hill is a wolf in sheep's clothing and will test both the drivers and their soap boxes to the limit this is the start ramp at the highest point of the observatory park overlooking the majestic helsinki harbour for the most picturesque Red Bull soapbox race of all time but you won't get to enjoy the view for long because within a matter of seconds you'll be faced with this fearsome berm this one's on a 90 degree angle so an instant test of the drivers steering you could see some flips and some rolls very early on this kicker might not look terrifying but make no mistake it launches you into the fastest and steepest part of the course made even trickier by the fact it's off camber forcing you to the right and they push a Kanan come out of that chicane and you into a harsh right-hander make it through that and you get a chance to clean yourself up in the carwash so if you survive the berm the kicker the chicane and this your foam and dry we've seen the course we've seen the soap boxes you're an expert when it comes to this aren't you stuff here you are though I know what do you think well in the pit lane this design genius there's also designed disaster so that should bode well I mean it's a very solid course really good obstacle so I think we're in for a good day yeah I think so too over to you Darren thank you fellas we do like design genius but we love design disaster and we love where we are today so we'll call this team VP K Harry the pilot they're all working together as volunteer firefighters and that the soapbox has been built by people from various backgrounds engineers drivers farmers plumbers other people too so we'll see whether this amalgamation of ideas can work and the creativity today is from a maximum of 20 they've got 15 for that the performance out of 40 35 so this is the moment of truth what I will say about the course is that it's very short and we've got the perfect position at the top of Observatory Hill wonderful weather today thousands here watching and off go VPK let's see what they can do the burn is first and they're all around the bird I never like to see a trailer attached to the back Matt doesn't seem to be a problem for this team over the kicker they've then got the chicane followed by the carwash they're nice and fast through there here's the carwash coming up through the fog that's already wiped it out at the end of the straw bales that's because he couldn't see hairy couldn't see coming through the foam and that's going to be a problem for everyone here today you've got to be who wears that when you pop out the carwash you're probably not gonna be able to see but that's a really good run by VPK to kick it off today they were nice and smooth did the berm really well handled all of the obstacles the only problem they had was they got a face full of foam after the carwash [Music] team Len Tarver salami in my very best finish in Helsinki today will they finish that truffle find out 17 for creativity [Music] and 31 for performance had been friends for 20 years this team and they're sponsored by a meat factory we actually got a helmet underneath the pilot you will notice and the front wheels got already the old wobbly pram wheel here's the kicker or two out of it more damage now the chicane managed him to keep it going quite quick bearing in mind he's not very little control from the front left as you look at it here's the carwash through the Folies fine it's only a short run there god wow I don't think it open you've got foam on your goggles and you come around there and you can't see the baler when you got speed you can flip it that's exactly what he did Mika's okay needs a bit of help to get it over the finish line it would have been a really good time that wouldn't hit forty six point nine but he lost so much time by flipping it after the carwash man unbelievable my goodness it was all looking pretty good but I don't know what happened they told me to call in the left side but I was like no way you should go in the right yeah but they not remember all here because I'm left-handed I mix it that's why I went left he was I should go in there in the right side you left the right confused ended up in the straw yes at the end of the day have you had a good experience a long time excellent time could it be better fantastic job congratulations you did brilliant yeah thank you good job ma'am that's you Darren thanks keV we've all forgotten at times that we write that Big Mama left-handed and all that kind of thing it's an easy mistake to make trains Foreman's come next now they say they come from beyond the solar system where the Sun seems to have shown a little more we've all been there from time to time at the Showbox the human powered steam train that doesn't need rails 29 out of 40 for the performance on the back of 13 for creativity and off we go rolling down again Yanni is the pilot the idea is to turn maybe he got his left and rice mixed up as well because he just went straight on it's a long way down when you find yourself up there off we go again let's have another go shall we here's the kicker better support from the crowd and now the chicane he's a lot more gentle with what he's doing now there's the car see the car like had time to get itself going by the time he'd rolled at the top what amount of time at one 11.5 but these are hold it again there's a lesson to be learned there that if you go and total it on the berm by the time you get to the carwash there's more foam than there ordinarily would be when it comes to soapbox racing Helsinki is the city that keeps on giving and you're gonna get even more after the break [Music] welcome back to the Red Bull soapbox race here in Helsinki I'm not ready shorts going on Darin I think I've joined some sort of pyramid scheme they get worse obviously they get worse I'm not even gonna try and pronounce our next team suffice to say that the theme is that they are poachers who have been tracking targets all winter and now with his weapon loaded the animals are prepared for the arrival I don't know where they get these ideas from but that's what it is 13 for creativity the performance score is 36 Niko is the co-pilot u-boat is the pilot and off they go let's see whether the poachers see whether the poachers get caught by the gamekeepers they actually got caught by the bird not a speed too fast too tight and Niko exited stage left they're gonna roll towards the kicker get back in Nicko or give us a push so they've still got the chicane they've still got the carwash I wonder whether Nico at the bat will go through the car wash now look Vicky well here's the car wash is the rid of speed to get through the foam and get to the Felice had to go through let it go because you ho needs in leads in badly he's been chilly over the line well eventually over the line what about the time at 106 point four five minutes not hours but it felt that way that's where it all went wrong before the race Matson gendell dealt a little bit deeper into the next team's chances look at this bad boy a tribute to the finish for Milan racing legend keke rosberg but I bet you any money when he won the world championship back in 1992 he wasn't sat on two bits of MDF and also I don't think his car was this flimsy it's held together with cable ties these wheels are a bit shoddy and it's made out of yoga mats let's hope it nama stays on the track oh nice because of the yoga mat and the yeah I didn't need to explain it did I that's you Darren you probably did nicely because I was as confused as you initially again I'll sell the Keke Rosberg tribute kaqun Paolo Jessie the pilot now they're all studying economics together at University of this team keke rosberg the first-ever Finnish Formula One world champion and I share the concerns about the whales if truth be known but then again I always do a 21-foot performance 14 for creating they all have gone straight away they've not even touched the tarmac watch this it looks just gone right down towards the bird try again oh this one's a shambles look at it I'll tell you what keke rosberg couldn't finish the race in that oh there's the bails tear me go give it a push over the kicker there we go oh it's gone look at the wheels now the axles completely let them down should have tried that from the start fellas [Music] Warhawk p40 [Music] it's a 1940's fighter jet and it looks great on the eye 19 out of 20 but creativity I'm not surprised I'm not sure where they lost the point because it looks brilliant 34 out of 40 for the performance everything stacking up here for this particular team to be competitive today very short run don't forget very quick from top to bottom and they finally get it over the top of the start ramp and off we go so the berm is first and you've got to get your line right through here a little bit high but managed to get it back left quickly enough they might just lost a little bit of time there the nice and quick over the kicker they've lost the wing and the left wings gone the right wing still there here we go around the chicane now we're coming down towards the car wash through the folks still going nice and quick wings back down oh it's creative this they can lift the wings up put them down again 26.0 three that's one of the best runs we've seen today and when you think of how well they did before they started with creativity performance and then the run itself that was good guys that was lightning fast how did it feel like in an airplane you had such a good line on the berm like highly spat you out nice and fast yeah we practice yesterday a bit like the lines were to jump where to take the bad cornice everything so it was fantastic how did it feel in the back for you just great I was totally safe here so proud of him aren't you I can tell I am really proud wings flying up that was a lovely touch it had to be to take the good corners worked it worked brilliantly I think you were well you may have put down one of the fastest times of the day so put it there good work stop doing that hey my name is Petros and my name is dam and we are team doubling which is the inspiration behind our car is the robotics and automation what we have studied in the university we have two wheels two boys it's basically a flying broomstick yes our car might look very simple but at the end it will be one of the most technically cuz the end bar is so technical that I think that most of the people couldn't do that but for us it's basically trivial because we have studied so much those kind of things and we haven't done a lot of those kind of things previously as well this is my second time here last time I was driving and this time is Tim's Tim has been three times we will be the fastest car and we will win yeah definitely gonna win come on boy the confidence team dabbing which is Timo Petros they've been involved he's had the wind knocked out of his sails that's for sure here we go this I can't believe who thought this was a good idea dancing laws to finish I'm not bothered about the time I'm just glad he got track was a little surprisingly difficult the gravel catch you out is too slippy yeah it was probably probably to crown it was it was a little bit difficult so that it it starts like a waffle wings it's a car yeah it's such an incredible contraption you've got there you look so fast from the start you must have felt confident when you left the ramp yeah yeah but it's a probably because we didn't tested this were with this much speed and that might be the reason yeah after the jump you landed and just the speed wobbles got you yes like that yes exactly I still think you're magic can you give us one more dab yes of course there it is fantastic put it there dude great job back to the top it's a fine line between bravery and insanity and I've got to say that was a mixture of both so now we have Callie oh Egypt sport now they're all into motorcycles fast cars and I'm told fast beer drinking too so let's keep our fingers crossed for this 38 from the performance we got 13 for creativity it's one of the more unique designs of a soapbox that we've ever seen a pyramid with a man poking out the top is the kicker nice and quick through there but then he get that little wobble that's the baculum is that she came so far so good so far so good he's lost it that's what he's sitting on he's on a little bike now without the bars look at that cover that brilliant blue looks like one of the Gibby man look at that I fell apart so we could see what he was doing they'll give us you think oh it's really you know specially all this then it all falls apart he's on that little contraption underneath look at that would you do that no you wouldn't Bunker's stark raving bonkers 29.8 by the way the time I forgot to tell you reach good my name's Matt not Scott if you think doesn't matter look at this thing what do you reckon I think it's one of the most impressive ones I've seen the attention to details amazing hydraulic doors the flux capacitor lights all over the car it's an impressive machine it is that's the door coming down both of that it's incredibly well-made I mean there is no seat back here the seat belt is missing the steering wheel is in my lap so any sudden impact on the front could be quite painful but it's got a chance of winning so let's see what happens back to Darren its Back to the Future not Darren yeah you know I've got one golden rule when it comes to commentary never try and pronounce a word that's got 17 letters in it and I'm gonna stick to it today 13 for creativity I have no idea what they call all engineers from Helsinki there's no seat the drivers going to be sitting on a metal plate and bungee cords are holding the doors closed 37 out of 40 for the performance if the brakes fail by the way is going to sit on the ground through a big hole on the floor and hold on right all sounds straightforward to me here's the bird two wheels that's the spectacular as you've seen through there now the kicker no problem just could do with a little bit more speed it's just not quite quick enough chicane carwash finish after this through we go let's have a look at the time last little chicane at the end there's the checkered flag in the finish and he's thirty point eight zero and the two wheel exit to the burn was brilliantly you show the pilot Marty Marty well what your is it well don't worry about that no what year is it it's 2019 mine yes I'm back what happened on the berm you like bounced onto you sided him back on the reals I was amazing yeah I tried to cut the corner incredible did you think the race was over at that point I was pretty sure of that that something went broke and I think but dude the car is awesome I'm very impressed with that one you must be happy I have to say the whole team was excellent and it's a TA that he stayed in character right the way through made in Finland their helmets looked I love that creativity it's not very often I take umbrage with the judges but I am today 27 for performance I can't believe that creativity score this looks great the eyes are the helmets of the pilot and the copilot Teemo is the pilot here's the bird made in Finland has ground to a halt that went so slowly even the crowd could get involved and you can see it's made of wood we weren't supposed to see it today from that angle but it's great to see that the guys are ok here we go what do you say going they wanted to compete today without breaks and we've made them put brakes on it before we allowed it seven the creativity 26 from before this they've got a lot of work to do here off we go the the taco bathtub here's the bird oh he's gone - heís gone through eyes not back down are they've gone Lexie's everywhere here's the onboard shot which is brilliant they know at this point they can see the whites of the spectators eyes up there right off we go again Oh crikey don't use maybe back in over the kick or with a kicker I felt that here's the chicane they're really fast you know all this but soapbox customs and they've got the maximum creativity score of 20 ill fur is the pilot and they're promising big things these guys today 35 out of 40 for the performance everything's gone well pre run and they're often running down the very steep start ramp here in Helsinki today and the first thing they encounter is the put that's the first thing they lose is the bonnet but everything's okay here's the speed over the kick and that's nice really quick in the minute she can smooth through they're coming down towards the car wash and fly through the carwash foam everywhere it's only short that's the checkered flag twenty five point three five brilliant when you think about the creativity score the performance score and the speed generated all the lines were good soap box well-designed brilliant run we're having a very special moment Darren I can't believe what's happening Matt tell him tell him what's happening right now is this coach has just given birth to a brand new baby soap box it's so beautiful and emotional I'm tingling all over I don't know how well it's gonna do I mean the wheels at the back are bigger than those at the front so that's cuz it's dad's a JCB back to didn't know you could go on one of those 22 for the performance here's the berm small wheels are the front big ones at the back and no problem around the burn that was good so far so good with the kicker next on the agenda that slowed them down is still a bit of damage to the front lot the wheels have gone it's gone from a sprint to a tumble oh look at that you never like to see that the patter of tiny feet on this occasion getting the soapbox down towards the finish line here we go we're all writing it through the car wash look at all the foam little getting down towards the finish it's got to be over a minute this one let's have a look the best time today was just over 25 seconds to give you an idea 101 point two five when your wheels go your wheels go so now we have that solid four boys a solid four is a finish manufacturer of bikes boats mopeds and travel trailers a maximum creativity score of 20 [Music] there must be bribe in the judges 40 out of 40 all of it it was bounce up and down on the spot so we've got the caravan attached to the car which seems to be going in Reverse for some bizarre reason well they've got no chance here surely around the berm around the verb around the other eye so far eyes in the back of his head now we've got the kicker the first reverse Showbox that we've ever had here this is crackers chicane always managed to get around look at this now they've got the carwash is just really narrow he straight through look at this for a run what about the time he's gone backwards all the way that's astonishing 34.6 for in Reverse from top tomorrow is in there look I thought that was the fella going backwards all the way now I get it that was brilliant good run that was absolutely fantastic how did you feel in there were you were you completely focused or did you just go with the tow squeezing my neck really tight that's how much adrenaline you've got in you are you happy I didn't even know it broke this car and one piece wonderful bit of reversing was that little reverse psychology for you yeah I was very scared because I didn't trust him at all and how many times you use brake I've two times it was fantastic guys we've gotta let you go that was fantastic awesome job my favorite so far maybe that's you Darren what you reckon I think I might be with you Horan acket comes next the theme is a Darth Vader Sphinx and the judges really liked the creativity of this walk they've all taken part in soapbox before they met and they know each other loosely through what we call the Red Bull soapbox circuit see what the judges making the performance this is out of 40 25 looks like it might be quickness it's got the look of a nice design easy to control I think oh yeah just about to see how fast he was going into the berm Risto is the pilot flies over the kicker here's the chicane a lot of speed through the chicane haven't seen many as quick through there this is really nice car wash let's have a look at the time this is going to be quick it could be really quick let's have a love here or twenty 6.08 not quite the fastest today but that was probably the smoothest looked like he had a lot of opportunity to test the soapbox and make sure he was at one with his with his vehicle hey Matt shroomish Moneypenny I'm ready for my short box race may I have to say your finnish accent is excellent well done very good thanks thanks what do you think of the Aston Martin then I'm a really big fan of this I think it's very well made an excellent chassis brilliant wheels and a really light foam body it's nice and low I think it'll be quick also got room for two passengers in here so that's very interesting it's got any gadgets oh yeah just watch yourself hi-tech yeah lovely lovely alright I fancy this ones chances but will it be shaken or stirred at the bottom Darren what do you reckon the silence says it's all Gonville james blonde 14 for creativity so the judges didn't like it as much as our two taro and Teemo pilot and co-pilot their brothers it's the third soapbox race together so ever we go of it in the speedtest by the way this team reached 46.2 km/h 31 out of 40 for the performance and off go James Blum nice and easy through there of they lost the wheel at the front someone's got long at the front it's all scooo with over the kicker here's the adverse camber chicane and then down towards the car wash there's the car wash one about the time it's not as fast as we thought it would be I don't think yeah 26.5 won they didn't get the speed that they were getting in practice and they go footing into the straw bales to finish to get the look on his face through there the actions been coming thick and fast today here in Helsinki and I cannot wait to see this one of the slickest soapboxes I've ever seen tackle the track but can our track tame the beast of Turin find out after the break [Music] welcome back to the Red Bull soapbox race in Helsinki this day has been more fun than the sauna I took with gendell Darren was up next I'm not even going to comment suffice to say the Beast of Turin is the name of the soap box team which again conjured up images of your sauna with general and 13 the creativity tommy the pilot and their brothers from the north of finland it's a replica of fiat first car that was built back in 1911 and they have been involved in Red Bull soapbox race before 12 for the performance but the judges didn't think a great deal of it this is my least favorite kind of design tall small wheels pram wheels bendy whales there we go it was heavy they'd had bendy wheels and what a bendy wheels do when you go around the corner correct they Bend that's that the Beast of Turin has been tamed in Helsinki let's look at the on board so much confidence at this stage and then you think hard no just leave it there fellas now we have Lisu who's gonna pilot the next scene doubt only 7 the creativity which is not very good well they're referees essentially that's the theme and they tell us they've been quite honest they haven't checked the brakes I think that's the first thing I checked 28 foot performance right then let's see what the girls can do all right around the bird watch the shrieking of whistling going on here over the kick-out oh there we go the wheels got well they told us that they hadn't tested the brakes that other than the test of the wheels either there we go they just can't handle it where will they ever learn all you've got to do is record a previous soapbox race event and notice that these wheels don't work [Applause] just about got away with it round the bird didn't they push it through the carwash so this is the final soapbox of the day here in Helsinki now you're gonna love this one recycling beast there's a real backstory to this it's a father and son team and dad didn't know that the son who's only 12 wouldn't be able to drive it today so dad's gotta drive it he also didn't know he got to do a performance hence why he's not done one but he still got 22 there are some teams right that have done a performance and thought about it got less than that paulie's got his turn up and he's got 22 this is the first time he's driven it he has no idea what he's doing he's petrified his name is Jana by the way here's the bottom recycling beast with dad driving should be son it's made out of rubbish they made it from just about nothing and here's the kicker hearing shouted absolutely petrified [Laughter] good fact he's driving one act is not making it isn't that a break and he's left-handed his theory will and he's right here's the car was she Kade oh he loves me he loves me no he doesn't know what to get ahold of look here's the finish yeah he dove it he's got it [Applause] 107.5 nine and he'd only turned up to watch tonight all the facial expressions were worth it alone you look like you were battling that the whole way down how did that thing handle well you made it it's okay I think your helmets on the wrong way maybe dust thing why I was so slow all in all happy with this thing yeah what next time same car yeah in car definitely maybe I throw away the brakes yeah the premaster yeah exactly maybe make it a little bit bigger oh no it's Paul it's faster faster yeah yeah okay well done congratulations I'll try get you out of here if I can there you go love that guy so do I I didn't realize he got his helmet on backwards either well that's been a cracking days soapbox racing but there has to be a winner Matt who's the king of Observatory Hill today roughing up third place is team Horan Achatz winging it into second spot a Warhawk p40 but today's winners who are on it without a bonnet a team sipar looter customs and gendell is with them now so here you're winners customs how are you feeling after that it's unbeliev it's nice it's nice oh it's so nice to win this game here when you came today as a team did you really believe you would go home as champions yes here feels like the best cars ever yeah you feeling pretty happy yeah yeah I didn't believe this couldn't believe it yeah you did it you're gonna celebrate tonight yes so all in all you've had a good day the best day ever and we'll be back of course you will there you go you're champions of Helsinki so much customs let's get to the after-party guys come on [Music] so our day in Helsinki has come to an end what an amazing event it was an absolute banger it had it all oh yeah what was your favorite moment do you know what I am gonna go for the broomstick the wizard yes a lot of these events but I've never seen that before and he was a real trooper he went down on the gravel so early on he got back up flew down and then did exactly the same off the jump and then he had an amazing day he was still happy at the end brilliant yeah what about you my favourite one was the pyramid I thought it had everything a hilarious helmet it was really quick and it all fell apart at the end it was Fanta he was so exposed when it was God's hello it was a good one perfect for me that is all we have time for so I guess you could say Matt we've reached our finish line really the show really yeah I'm just gonna
