see the reason that most of us go through life never discovering our true greatness literally walking breathing corpses the uncommitted life isn't worth living why because it doesn't produce anything see you only make things happen your life only counts you only make a difference when you are committed when you make a commitment with your life that's the people that make a commitment with their lives the people that make a commitment to their customers the people that make a commitment to their families to their relationships are the people that make the greatest impact in life you cannot have relationship without reciprocity you cannot have true relationship without reciprocity you cannot get into a relationship to get and not give and i want you to ask yourself do you give as good as you get add up what you're getting and weigh it against what you're giving and then you will know whether you really joined to anything yeah people are coming to work they take a job they're not committed to the job they want the check they want to check well everybody wants some money baby but i'm just here for the check that's why it's not going to work for you you don't understand the reciprocity anybody wants some money but if you're not willing to give at least as good as you get it will not last and that's why you can't stay anywhere or work for anybody because you've never had levi you may have had reuben you might have had simeon but you've never been joined to anything so you've had you collect anniversaries you've got a lot of birthdays you've got some plaques on the wall but you've never been the person that you could be because there could be is locked up behind commitment and until you're committed you'll never get the could be what is commitment commitment is the salesman who says look here i'm going to make a thousand dollars today and i'm not going home you can turn the lights out the janitors could be here running the vacuum cleaner i'm not leaving here till i do it i used to be a door-to-door salesman i had x number of tvs i had a minimum amount that i knew i had to sell every day in order to provide for my mother who was ill at the time who had lost a job at the m m cafeteria because of arthritis and i said i'm going to go door-to-door and sometimes i would not come home until one o'clock at night knocking on people door people closing what do you want would you like to buy a nice working month's television set no money down no what about an emerson tv no thank you very much do you know anybody else that would be interested no thank you very kindly knock on another hello would you like to buy a nice working television set no money down no get away from my door thank you very kindly do you know anybody else would be yeah my cousin he lived two doors down thank you very kindly i tell him you sent me when i heard your cousin told me that you want to buy television said told me to come here and talk to you got a special discount for you yes come in i'm interested i would just keep right on i would not go home until i did it it's an interesting thing ladies and gentlemen that when we put ourselves in a situation where we say we're going to do it it puts you in another zone where the universe responds to you when you have that kind of consciousness see the universe responds to the man or woman that refuses to be denied because that is your commitment you know what i thought to myself i thought i would hate to live and die and never know what would happen if i ever committed myself to anything some people have never thrown their whole self at nothing not at school not at work not at berries not a church oh my god you had one foot in and one foot out of every dream all of your life and you've never seen what you could be if you ever really connected and through everything that's what's going to make your death so sad that's what's going to make it so sad is that you never live first you you never fully engage you never fully studied you've never fully invested in anything or anybody you want to get something that you are not willing to give you have never been joined you just wore the dress got the plaque they threw the rice you joined the church you took the job but you've never seen what you could be if you threw your whole self at your dream that business that you want that book you want to write that dream that you have of controlling your destiny that is yours that power to create that and to manifest that that is yours that's available to you but you've got to be willing to stand there and face disappointment not have support feel lonely doubt yourself sometimes be rejected again and again and again become bankrupt if necessary again and again and again and refuse to turn around until life gives it up you go to this church but you're not joined if you don't have reciprocity you're not joined if you're not really bought into it if you don't really feel like it's my turn oh i come here because i get a word reciprocity what do you give back for what you get without reciprocity no relationship will ever reach its apex because you're not fully invested in anything you do so you catch some crumbs that fall from the master table but you don't get the children's bread you get the puppy dog blessing that comes from being in the right place at the right time because you are not joined into the connectivity that produces the real blessing of god in your life and you're getting older and you're running out of time and running out of excuses and running out of people to blame wonder what would have happened in school if you've been committed wonder what would have happened in your marriage if you've been committed wonder what would have happened in your church if you'd really grown your whole self you've always been casual and never been committed and some of the most casual people are talented because talented people will lay on their talents and use their talent as a camouflage to cover up their lack of commitment and because you're talented enough to be able to float by on broken pieces you will fool an indiscriminate eye into thinking that you are committed you're not committed you're just talented you'll never know what you could have been if you would have really committed yourself you've been at 30 or 64 when you were created to be a hundred fold nothing can resist a person that has that kind of commitment the people that have made a difference on the planet when john f kennedy said we will go to the moon and the next decade he spoke that was a commitment and people shared that vision people bought into that we've had all kind of examples in history where people have made declarations who have committed their lives to bring about a difference their people are taking a stand today against hunger i guarantee you it will be a part of our past at some point in time someone took a stand against polio it no longer plagues us as it once did because someone said it is my commitment to eradicate it from the face of the earth someone made the commitment the reason that we're here and enjoying the democracy that we have someone made a commitment that whatever is required if it means that i die i remember paul robertson here i stand for i can do no other and that's how you must be commitment means standing up for your life it means honoring yourself it means it means beginning to say and to to see and recognize your alignment and oneness with the universe and that you are a channel for life to express through and we short-circuit it with anger we short-circuit it with fear we short-circuited with with envy we short-circuited by being lazy or apathetic or giving up easily why why why we say oh it's too hard it's too hard we don't challenge our spirit ladies and gentlemen there's nothing as powerful as the human spirit you can't destroy you can pervert it but you can't destroy i was reading man's search for meaning by viktor frankl what a powerful book i'm reading it now for the seventh time and he gives so many graphic examples of of the power of the human spirit i can't be committed to everything i can't join everything i can't be married to a thousand women i can't work a thousand jobs i can't join five churches because i take my commitment too seriously to spread it around loosely it costs too much i see a lot of people now i like that i interest me and intrigue me and i would like to be friends but i don't become friends with them because i understand that real friendship is an investment and there's not any more of me to go around so we will be nicer we'll be casual acquainted because i understand real friendship is a commitment it means i will be there for you it means i will return your calls it means i've got your back it means that i will emotionally spiritually financially do whatever i can to undergird you and i can't do that with everybody so commitment it's more to it than being nice i'd rather have somebody with commitment because if you are committed you can go back to school you can go back and read you can go back and get yourself together but you can have all the books you want to if you don't have commitment you will not succeed and so what are some of the things that can can fortify us and and give us the kind of inner strength that will allow us to forward ourselves into the future by manifesting our commitments number one commitment means in some cases going back to school getting some training sitting up in classes with people younger than you putting yourself in a position where you don't know and that is awkward and uncomfortable but because of your commitment to develop yourself or to go back to school to get a high school diploma to get a college degree that it doesn't matter feeling dumb and saying what am i doing here setting up in some boring class commitment can mean a lot of things it could mean that you begin to go back you got to back up sometimes means to back up and not give up to regroup back up and regroup and come back again because life is way later because you got knocked down i know when when i was working on my dream there were times i lost my house at one point i lost my car i was broke my credit was bad i was sleeping at different friends houses on their couch or on the floor there were times months that i slept on the floor of my office and got up early and dressed before my staff got there to give them the impression that i got there early before they did and we all pretend not to know what we knew that the boss was staying in the office so we never talked about it but i refuse i refuse to give up on my dream and what happens they say you know in the prosperous years you put it in your pocket in the lean years you put it in your heart it makes me appreciate it even more even more i i wouldn't trade it i wouldn't trade it for anything the disappointment the pain that i've gone through by keeping the commitment your whole life in the facade the whole thing is the faith the whole thing in the front your whole life of the camouflage and now you're getting older and you'll never get to see what you could have been because the cost of getting the sin in the commitment that you've never been willing to pay you're trying to get somebody to fall in love with the you that you've never discovered yourself you come to the altar and you raise your hand and you say lord i give myself to you but you don't you walk down here and join the church and you say now i'm a member of the church but you're not you marry somebody and say you can count on me i'll be there through the thick of the thing for better for worse for richer and poor in sickness than hell you didn't mean it have studied half worked half labored and then wonder why i thought i'd be further than i am at days let me tell you why you are not further it is not the devil it is not witches it is not demons and its sure god ain't haters you are not any further than where you are right now because you have never thrown your whole self at anything in your life and you think greatness goes on sale but true quality never goes on sale the only thing that goes on sale is cheap stuff the real high quality stuff it costs what it costs they're not trying to get somebody average to buy it you got to have a certain amount of money or you ought not to be in here greatness costs what it costs it's wrong for you to think that you're gonna give an offering and god's gonna bless a business you ain't committed to bless a marriage you ain't committed to bless you in school and you won't study bless you as a saint of god and you won't walk like a saint of god who do you think god is somebody playing in vegas god is not hitting a slot machine god is a guaranteed definite i am the mighty god or sure bless it he told abraham i swear i'm gonna bless you ain't no chance ain't no doubt ain't no joke about it if i told you i was gonna bless you i will open up the windows i will if you will keeping the commitments that you have might mean taking a stand that's that's unpopular something was said one time when you take a position says coward has asked the question is it safe politics asks the question is it popular but conscience or commitment asks the question is it right and see most people rather operate from the first two is it safe for me to take this position i remember when i was a state legislator i saw guys and and women who believed in legislation very strongly but because the speaker of the house said we won't go with that they backed down [Music] and they felt bad about it they wouldn't take the position because they didn't want the speaker of the house to be angry at them they wanted to be all right with all of the rest of our colleagues see it takes a great deal of strong courage and commitment on your part to step out a line to you know henry david thoreau says a man doesn't keep pace with his companions perhaps he's listening to the beat of a different drama let him dance to the music that he hears however measured or far apart when you are committed you're dancing to the beat of a different drama don't expect people to understand you don't expect it to make sense to anybody why you've got to do this why you have got to go while you leave this is a good job i'm going they pay you well i'm going you just a few years for retirement i'm going why i don't understand you don't have to i'm going for me [Music] [Applause] because i've made a different kind of commitment with my life this is something i have got to do while they was golfing i was studying while they were shooting hoops i was praying while they was playing games and sitting up and eating and joking in the restaurant i was studying you can't get out of something something that you're not willing to put into it you have to put your everything your everything your mind your energy your effort your discipline your tenacity nothing is going to jump out the fire if you don't throw something in there it's not gonna happen your first commitment is to love the god who gave you life who blew breath into you has a right to expect a return on his investment above all others he gave you life mama bought you shoes daddy got you a bicycle god gave you life you owe him a level of commitment beyond all others your god is approached in your spirit not in your flesh you're dancing and you're jumping and you're whooping and you're hollering and you're clapping does not mean you're committed to god god in the spirit and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth when your insides are given to god when your heart is given to god with my whole heart glory will i follow thee it's not my hands my feet my heart my spirit my innermost being is committed to god i will not face a giant without you i will not make a major decision without prayer i will not bring somebody into my life just because they please me i'll submit myself my destiny my future over to you you are my foundation you are my rock you are my fortress you are my strength you are my defense without you i can do nothing you are the substratum of every dream i have ever dreamed in my life and i will take no promotion you don't want me to have and i will accept no friend you don't want me to have your commitment it means taking a stand [Music] taking a stand for you it means delivering it means coming through what if you don't keep your commitment less what if you give it everything you have and you come up short or if you don't give it everything you have what if you get weak along the way and you're throwing a towel on yourself you surrender to your emotions what what what then a lot of people become discouraged they become frustrated and they say oh what the heck and they go back to doing what they were doing before saying it doesn't work here's what i suggest number one that does happen so take total responsibility for it just own it don't make any excuses on why you gave in or why you didn't come through just own it and face to flack whatever it is and stand up inside yourself next thing is assess the situation how did you get here what happened that you broke down that you had a breakdown and you surrendered what happened what was going on so you might have to deny yourself something or do a trade-off do something that will offset it the other thing is start again so what you felt flat on your face so what start again learn from the experience and start again don't count yourself out don't send in just after a lifetime of being miserable a lifetime of being broke a lifetime of being unhealthy a lifetime of being in a relationship that is no longer fulfilling to you a lifetime of working on a job that that does not bring you satisfaction that's not giving you the creative uh urge that you need and and that got to have in your life that stimulates you don't send us your stuff like that you are a human being don't volunteer your life that way your life has too much value to the universe you've got something to contribute you've got something to give and so what if you make a commitment and you're not able to do it like a pro that you're not good as everybody else live in the moment i like what this says look to this day for it is life the very life of life in its brief course lie all the realities and verities of existence the bliss of growth the splendor of action the glory of power for yesterday's but a dream and tomorrow is only a vision but today today well lived makes every yesterday a dream of happiness and every tomorrow a vision of hope look well therefore to this day you better be committed or you ain't gonna make it if you can only love me when you like me you have to be committed through the storm and the rain and the heartache and the pain and the disappointment you have to believe in the we and the us and not the me and the you or you're not gonna make it it's a commitment it's not a feeling you gotta come home with you in love and you got to come home when you're not in love or you're not going to make it and stay there until the love comes back it's a commitment y'all don't want to hear real truth you want to hear fairy tale hollywood shake and baked stuff but in reality it's a commitment commitments don't have nothing to do with your feelings you do it because you're supposed to and stop expecting to be rewarded for what you're supposed to do anyway [Applause] [Music] stop bragging about how you brought your money home you were supposed to stop bragging about how you took care of me you're supposed to take care of me it's a commitment this ain't a date this is a commitment we have passed the stage of dating we made a commitment that's why they said for better or for worse for richer or for poor in sickness and in health the preacher knew that at least one of us was going to be crazy he was warning you from the beginning it's a commitment you picked out that crazy man you chose that crazy woman shut up did nobody put on you you wouldn't rest till you gotta now shut up you wouldn't listen at nobody everybody tried to tell you people tried to warn you no no no i just got to have him well now you got him shut up see if we just start enjoying where we are if we make that kind of commitment to enjoy where we are to experience the experience of life where we are to do all we can right now where we are forget about the mistakes yesterday forget about all your failures yesterday forget forget about what you don't have that's not important only thing that we have is right now right now right now and i say that life is calling on you to call forth on that the optimist which i think one of the most positive groups in in the world they have something called the optimus creed and i like it says promise yourself i changed it to commit yourself because i think that commitment has more power than promise it says commit yourself to be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind to talk health happiness and prosperity to every person you meet to make all your friends feel that there is something in them to look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true to think only of the best to work only for the best and expect only the best to be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own to forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future to wear cheerful continents at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile to give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others to be too large for worry to noble for anger too strong for fear and too happy to permit the presence of trouble commit yourself to these things [Music] you
