[Music] howdy y'all welcome back to diesel creek if this is your first time joining us my name is matt today i got a fun video for you i've been watching youtube for as long as youtube's been around when youtube first came out i remember one of the first channels i really got into was a guy up in canada called dave's farm and dave kind of came into some hot water and doesn't do youtube anymore but one of the things he really did do that i really liked and a lot of other channels did at the time were cold start videos and i think a lot of people like those and i've had a few requests for them so today we are going to do a cold start of palooza i have a ton of equipment varying from quads dirt bikes chainsaws all the way up to bulldozers and semi trucks so what are we going to do it's about 26 28 degrees today and we're supposed to get about six inches of snow so we're gonna go out there and start up every single thing i can okay so the way i'm gonna try to do this is i already told you the temperature it's uh upper 20s and i'm going to try to give you the approximate time that it's been since the whatever it is has been started and then we're just going to go ahead and run it i'm pretty meticulous about when i start things in the cold like this i always let them run i always let them reach operating temperature before i go ahead and shut them back down or i rev them up or something like that so if you see me revving anything it's already been running for a while and i just cut the footage so i know we got a lot to cover and nobody wants to sit there and stare at something idle for 10 minutes before i can hit the throttle a little bit so yeah don't get mad at me so to get things kicked off for us here it only seems right that we go ahead and uh do a snow blower since i'm gonna be needing a snow blower probably several times today if the snow does what they say it's going to this baby is a craftsman 522 that i picked up off the side of the road last summer i did a video on that on the channel if you're interested you can go back and find that maybe i'll put the link down in the description um but basically i've been using this thing all winter and it's fantastic it uh it's definitely paid for itself and i've been starting pretty reliably too so we'll see if we can't get it to fire up for you probably been three or four days since it's been run oh tried to go i tell you what it's hard to beat that for free huh one down dozens to go so just in an effort to not make this video last all day i i've got three pieces here that we're not going to do there's like a steel leaf blower a 461 chainsaw and old home light water pump i don't really know that anybody wants to see me start up little teeny equipment the snowblower i guess was kind of an exception but if you guys really want to see a complete cold start video including all that kind of stuff maybe i'll do a separate video for all the small power equipment if you guys really want that drop comment down below let me know next up we got my 2003 ford power stroke this is an f350 with a 6 liter in it and she usually starts up pretty good in the cold but does kind of have that nice rumbly whistle to it so it's been two or three days i think since it's been run let's go ahead and fire it up [Laughter] so [Music] next up on our list is a 1971 suzuki trailhopper it's a 50cc uh little mini bike that was actually street legal at one point in time not since i've owned it this is a 66 international cub cadet with a k1a1 8 horsepower on it and hasn't been started since probably summertime sometime around july or august and we would start it today and i know it would fire up because it's very loyal but somehow or another i lost the bracket that holds the fuel sediment bowl onto the fuel tank so without that we can't get any fuel to the carburetor so unfortunately she's off the list for today let's see if our suzuki will fire up i hear gas sloshing so we got some fuel uh keys on this was my very first any kind of motorcycle or a dirt bike i don't know what you'd really call this but i've got a lot of fond memories on this thing and one of these days i'd like to restore it so oh it's going [Music] [Music] close [Music] there we go oh yeah baby [Music] god i love this thing okay last one in this garage to start is going to be a 2014 at least i believe that's what year it is uh honda foreman 500. it's a fuel injected machine so it really shouldn't be much to start it but we'll go ahead and do it anyway [Applause] contact okay of course you guys all know and love this one it's my 99 jeep cherokee 4.0 aka the beater with a heater and uh thank goodness she's got the heat today let's see how she does a cold start doesn't even squeak the belt anymore all right now we can do my other jeep here this is a 2018 rubicon jl you can see i never drive it i don't remember the last time i drove this vehicle it's probably been at least a month or so maybe longer let's uh see if i can't pry the door open and start it up i would hope this is pretty uneventful so the last vehicle we have on the list now is my 97 international 4900 with a dt 466 in it and i don't think she's been running at least whew man gotta be two months or better uh not the best in the cold let's go ahead and see how she does oh [Music] all right how about a little bit of junkyard golf cart action you guys haven't seen this gem on the channel in quite some time i still haven't never got to do all the upgrades to it that i want to but maybe one of these days we'll get back to it i do run it around quite a bit in the summer time it's very handy uh what else i don't think it's been started in three or four months no battery in it i gotta put a jump pack on it might start crusty all right corntech so this golf cart has a diaphragm type fuel pump and after sitting for a while sometimes it'll lose prime on the system and it'll take a lot of cranking to really get that fuel pump back through there so we'll just give it a little bit of sniff ether see how that does for it that'll probably fix us right up here oh yeah [Music] there you have it guys [Music] not bad for 200 bucks at a junkyard huh if i had a little bit of a better snow tire on it i bet you'd probably drive around racing slicks ain't real good in the snow and ice [Applause] well that's enough till spring so you may see the 88 rangers sitting here and think well why aren't we starting that and if you've seen the previous videos on that you probably know why there's fuel system issues there it'd just be a waste of a good battery trying to crank that thing up right now i actually did try that the other day for giggles and kind of what gave me the idea to do this kind of what gave me the idea to do this video but she didn't start starting our transition into the heavy equipment now we've got this beautiful alice chalmers forklift that i picked up and did a series on i got this for 200 bucks and i've never tried to start it in the cold it's been stored inside and i hate to see it sitting out here like this but i've just had too many other projects in and out of the garage to be dealing with it taking up room so let's uh see if we can't fire this baby up it's been probably sitting out here at least um two months since it's been started okay contact she's gonna need some help boys might be our first no-go of the day did they turn the propane on i did all right i got some better jumper cables hooked up to it now let's see what kind of crank action we're getting here 4k does not like the cold [Music] oh i gave it an honest effort i don't think the forklift wants to start today if i really needed it i'm sure i could just hit it with some either and it'd probably fire up but it's not that important all right this is the last cold start we got here at the house then i'll be heading out to the farm for the big toys this is my 2003 bobcat s185 it's got a four cylinder kubota diesel in it and i think that it's probably been about a week since this thing's been run i don't know what the deal is with this thing something about the cold the starter relay doesn't like the cold it starts fine in the summertime winter time it seems like i have to jump the starter i've already changed the relay and the starter i don't understand why it keeps doing [Laughter] this i just swapped the starter relay again let's try it [Laughter] so hey [Music] so all right that about wraps up all the toys here at the house let's go to the farm play with the big ones all right so here we are out at the farm and we've got more than a couple big boy toys out here to start up got the international 454 diesel unfortunately the greater christine here the engine is still hanging in my garage so can't start that one got my sloppy old hoe here my kamatsu pc75 got the vibratory pull behind roller my d41a come on two bulldozer we'll give an attempt on the crane truck sitting back there but uh last time i used it it started up and drove up here and then it quit so i haven't got it running since then and then finally the coup de the 57 auto car semi truck i've never done a cold start on this truck i mean it's done a chilly start but this will definitely be the coldest i've ever attempted to start it in so we'll start off with a vibratory pool behind roller if you haven't seen i did a whole series on building this thing out of uh well it's a it's a 60s vibratory pool behind roller that originally had a wisconsin v4 gasoline engine on it and i yanked this four-cylinder kubota out of a junkyard and transplanted it onto the roller here and got everything uh fixed and working on it so it's a pretty good little unit and i have never really cold started it and did a winter like this so it's probably been a month or two since i last started it let's give it a go all right this unit does have glow plugs so we'll go ahead and give it some heat and i don't know how good this battery really is or not we'll see if it'll crank over without any assistance if it needs assistance we're gonna have to circle back to it because my cables aren't gonna reach it all right see what you got she got nothing oh i forgot there's a cable off the starter hold on all right the battery's too low on this guy to get it cranked over right now we'll have to circle back when i have the excavator out of the way i can uh get jumper cables onto this thing and it should fire up okay next up my 2000 kamatsu pc75 it's got a four cylinder yanmar engine in it and it usually fires up pretty decent there is no heat on this machine though like a grid heater or glow plugs or anything so we're at the mercy of the elements and the battery contact so these yard mar engines are unbeatable man if you're looking at equipment and it's got a yawn mar engine in it that's a darn good engine okay i got the jumper cable stretched over from the battery of the hoe here over to the roller let's give the roller another go and see if she won't pop off now that we got a little bit of extra oomph right what is this attempt number three or four now i don't know i'll reheat the glow plugs here for 20 seconds and then we'll go ahead and hit the key come on baby oh yeah i need to get some pushings on this thing [Music] [Music] [Music] all right that thing runs great i need to get some bushings put underneath of this radiator support because it is just obnoxiously loud all right it's time now for the biggest piece of equipment that i own this is an 86 kamatsu d41a it's got a komatsu engine in it and i don't think it's been run in eh two three weeks this has a grid heater in it but i won't use it because it's gonna start up faster than any other thing that i own anyways this thing always starts phenomenally contact [Music] so uh moving on all right next up we got my international 454 it's got a three cylinder diesel engine in it and i don't know when the last time i ran this thing was it's been several months the last time i tried to start it the battery was so low it didn't want to start uh so i came in straight away with the uh soccer mom recovery cords got her planted on there a while ago hopefully been charging up the battery a bit i still have my pickup truck connected to it so yeah hopefully she pops off here there's no glow plugs or grid heater on this machine either i would like to add a grid heater because it does not like the cold as you're about to see [Music] contact it is not having it i don't think my cables are making a good connection here all right reconfigured our cords here a bit maybe that'll help us out yeah this battery is really low i'm gonna have to pull this thing out and take it home and charge it whenever i leave here today but i'd like to get this baby fired up come on she can do it everybody cheer her on down in the comments she's one hard start in sob you guys that follow the channel regularly will know this thing never likes to start [Music] in the ether doesn't take much just a little whiff of her usually gets this baby purring in a hurry contact oh yeah yet is is well we can go ahead and try and start the 700 auction crane but uh i don't have very much faith being is the last time i tried to start it it wouldn't have it i think there's some water maybe got into the fuel bowl when it's frozen or something i got to take that carburetor off there and clean it out it's just been too darn cold out here all right contact just as i suspected it's not worth dragging the jumper cables over there for because i know it's not gonna start before too long there's gonna be a whole video dedicated to getting this thing running again and fixing up a bunch of little other stuff on it getting a little closer to road legal and finally for the coup de gras the 57 auto car with 180 horse naturally aspirated cummins in it i haven't started this thing and had to be june or july this is february so i stole a couple batteries out of the crane truck jabbed them in here i got a couple umbilical cords hooked up for the pickup truck we're gonna let those sit and charge for a little while so i let the pickup truck charge the batteries on this thing for a while and i think we should be uh ready to go [Music] if you don't know the way this truck works is it has a compression release there's no kind of glow plugs or anything what you do is you pull this lever here which is your compression release and you hold that out while you start cranking the engine over and the engine builds up some momentum and starts spinning nice and quick and then you just hurry up and release that compression and all sudden it hits really hard and then that'll pop it off a lot faster so there's no kind of glow plugs or heat or anything in this kind of truck in case you're curious this is a uh five and three twin stick so you got your standard five-speed gearcase and an auxiliary you got a low direct and a high on that side all right let's get this sucker cranked up hey all right well after about a half an hour of piddling around here i've figured out that i think the transmission is locked up and i'm thinking there might just be water in it that's frozen so we'll have to change that once it warms up but i've got the clutch wedge down with the board and also we have some sort of issue with our starter relay and i've got it engaged right now and the engine is trying to turn over so i know the engine's not locked up thank god but uh i can't do it from in the cab so i'm gonna have to control the compression release and jump the starter under the hood here could be sketchy come with me and you'll see a world of osha violations on under your hats kids i hope this works still turning awful slow i don't think it's gonna fire like this i've got the compression released right now [Music] now man well that's a bummer this is getting a little sketchy to try anything else i don't know how else i could improve it right now anyways i think i'm getting a serious power loss maybe from the starter and uh also the clutch drag is probably just killing us right now i'll give it one more go i'll start my truck up so we got full boost going to this thing my so well i'm sorry folks but that's about it it gets to cranking over half decently fast but as soon as you let the compression release off to start it kills it right out i don't know what's going on in that starter but there's got to be something screwing up in there i did a small thing about opening a patreon to help facilitate the restoration of this truck and blown away by the response that you guys gave me um so we'll definitely be working on this thing real soon here the weather's been killing me we got 10 inches of snow and we're supposed to get more so i just figured i'd come out here today and fire it up for you guys at least and unfortunately that can't happen so the old girl needs a lot of love but i'm fixing to give it to her i guess the next thing you guys see about this truck will be pulling the starter figuring out what's wrong with it draining all the fluids changing everything out getting it mechanically ready and hopefully getting this baby fired back up it's really breaking my heart that it won't fire up but at least it's not locked up for about 10 minutes i thought the engine was locked up a transmission that doesn't concern me nearly as much even if there is water in there and it's frozen it's probably fine well guys i think that about wraps it up for me today i'm really disappointed that we couldn't get the old auto car going that was kind of my focal point today i was saving that for the end because it's kind of like the cherry on top so very disappointing but that just means there'll be more auto car coming sooner than later i had a lot of very generous people donate for the patreon thing and i'm not never trying to push that but the option is there if you guys want to donate i'll put a link down below so let me know down in the comments what you guys think about a cold start video i haven't seen anybody do one of these in a long time like i said and i used to really love these kind of videos so if you liked it don't forget to hit the thumbs up drop a comment down below and if you haven't already of course you're going to want to subscribe to see all the stuff that we started today and messed around with i have a lot of videos on all this equipment already and there'll be plenty more coming in the future along with uh more so until the next time guys thanks for watching i'll see you on the next video later [Music] do [Music] you
