what's good we're back in this thing in the last video i said if we got 750 likes on it i would go ahead and do a master class and all the sauce everything you need to know on how to do these clone effects and music videos so if you want to know how to do a clone effect spot it in a music video instantly kind of know how to do that effect sit back relax click like we'll break this down i'm going to have a timestamp thing pop up showing all the effects that i kind of go over and then a timestamp to them so if you don't want to watch the whole entire video and you just want to learn how to do one effect you can go ahead and skip there because i know this video is going to be a little bit more lengthy but if you do go ahead and sit through it all you're going to know everything about clone effects if you're new here what's good my name is brian i make music video tutorials here on youtube we're on the road to 100 000 subscribers so if you're not already subscribed go ahead and click that subscribe button really does help push my content to a lot of people as well as a like button that would be greatly appreciated one last thing before we get into the video if you do want to go ahead and kind of level up your music video editing game support the channel at the same time you can go ahead and check out my website i'm going to be dropping some new packs really soon but right now we got the texture pack the thermal pack and the crt pack all really good assets to kind of take your music videos to the next level as well as save you some time while editing i'll have my website linked down below as well as a tutorial playlist kind of showcasing how you can use it and show you new different ways to use the assets but yeah that's enough talking right now let's get into the video and show you how to do these clone effects before we do get into the video if you did want to follow along with the tutorial as well as have the project files i'll have them linked down below i upload them all to patreon or my patreon supporters so if that's something you're interested in you'll be able to kind of copy and paste the keyframes into your own timeline and practice and learn the effect that way all right so now that we're in after effects there are some basic things that you're going to need to learn to do for every single clone effect it's no matter which one you're doing these are always going to be included in the steps so i'm going to go over that kind of how to make everything look smooth and then we're going to go into specific different techniques that you can do to kind of make them stand out a little bit more or have a different look so first off i have three separate clips here this first clip that we transition into then this main clip where we're gonna be doing the rotoscoping and then the last clip where it kind of transitions to the next clip so with all these effects you're gonna need to rotoscope out or mask out your subject in some way depending if you want it to be a freeze frame or if you want it to be live action so when i say live action i kind of mean moving around so you see alfredo's moving around here we're going to be able to capture him and kind of mask him out from the background in all of these frames whereas a freeze frame would be something where let's just go ahead and show you an example so if i go to freeze frame it would be this clip the whole entire time and the clone would be replicating this frame only i personally think most of the time rotoscope's going to be the option so let's go ahead and show you how to do that so to get the rotoscope tool you can hold alt w on your keyboard or you can go up to this toolbar up here and go to rotoscope tool click on that and then select on the clip you want to be rotoscoping here our middle clip it's named background and i'm going to double click on the video here and it's going to bring us into from the comp layer to a specific layer of just the clip and then once you're inside here your cursor will turn green just go ahead and mask out your subject so kind of just click and drag around the outline of your subject depending on how much contrast is in your clip it might do a really good job first or it might not you can see we pretty much got there i just go ahead and click and drag to add on spots that we want i'm not going to worry too much about his hair for the tutorial i always say do a good job masking out because it is going to take your video to the next level so be sure to do that when you have a messy rotoscope your video kind of looks messy overall and then if you have some spots where it goes out of boundaries you can see down here we don't want this little black corner you can hold alt on your keyboard and it's going to turn the cursor red and then just click and drag to kind of remove that area then go to the preview tab it's on the right hand side for me might be in a different spot for you and if you don't see it go to window and then go to preview and make sure that's checked once it's checked it will pop up and you'll be able to see it depending on how good your clip is you can click play stop and it might be able to track it all the way through i personally like to go frame by frame if it's a shorter clip anyways it's just going to do a better job and you can tweak these little things that mess up down the road so i'm just going through and fixing some of these options you can see it kind of splits apart here and then i'm just going to go a frame ahead kind of loses his hand for a second it's really important just to fix this and spend a little extra time it's going to make your effect look so much better so i just go frame by frame here and again just fixing all of these areas if you do go out of bounds remember to hold alt to remove that area that you don't want so now we're clicking through and it's doing a pretty good job masking if you do give it a good subject to mask around so there's a lot of contrast you can see how the background's black and his hoodie's really well lit and red it's gonna be a lot easier for you to go ahead and do this rotoscope whereas you can see it's kind of struggling where his hand is because his hand is roughly the same color as his shirt and once you get to the last frame sometimes it does lose the track and you can fix that by going right up here where the timeline is and clicking and just dragging it out a little bit more and then you can see it masks out your subject after you've gone through and made sure every frame looks good go ahead and click freeze that's going to lock in your rotoscope not allowing you to change it anymore but it's also going to take the subject away from the background then once it's gone through and froze out your subject you can see it will have either a black background or down here you can toggle the transparency and you can see it with a transparent background you can see there's kind of a black outline around our subject so to fix that i'm going to bring in shift edge a little bit until it kind of removes that for the majority and then i'm also going to bring up the feather just a little bit maybe something like 7.5 to 10. it really depends on your clip just do something that looks good for you and now that looks like a lot cleaner of a rotoscope and let's go ahead and duplicate that layer i did that by holding ctrl d just makes a duplicate of the same exact layer and then go to the bottom one and then click on the layer and then go to the roto brush effect and delete it the top one's going to be your roto so i'm going to rename that to roto and then the background is the background layer now some things you're going to want to do with all the clone effects is make sure you have this motion blur enables motion blur for all layers with the motion blur switch set enabled as well as this motion blur option on all of the rotos that way it's going to make it look a lot more realistic and when we start keyframing the position the scale rotation all these different options it's going to give it more realistic look and it's really going to take that clone to the next level also if you don't see that option you can go ahead down here to toggle switches modes and click that until you see these three little circles and then going along with that motion blur if you go to composition settings up here with composition and then composition settings go to advanced i'd recommend having your shutter angle on 180. it's the most realistic looking one you can bring it up and that's going to add more motion blur it goes all the way up to 720 and it's gonna look crazy with a lot of motion blur or you can bring it down but i always keep it right at 180 unless there's something very specific that i'm looking for so then one last basic thing that i would go over is if you wanted to do freeze frames all you have to do instead of rotoscoping out you would go to the pen tool find the frame that you want to freeze out for this case let's do his watch there's not really anything super good to mask out in this clip so we're not actually gonna be doing the effect with the pen tool but i'll show you how to do it you basically just do that once you mask it out you can see the background if you turn off the transparency or turn it back on you can see it's just as watch and then you right click on that layer go to time and then freeze frame and that's going to make a still image of his watch the whole entire time and then you can do these concepts that i'm going to be doing with the rotoscope dot one with the freeze frame and it's going to look basically the same obviously just the frame isn't moving all right so now that we're all done with the basics i want to get into a more advanced and kind of show you different techniques that you can use to the clone effect so that way when you spot a clone effect in a music video you're kind of able to understand what's going on there and what they did and then you can take that use that as inspiration and make your own effect out of it if you guys could do me a favor real quick and drop a like i spend a lot of time creating this video i want to do more master class kind of videos in the future or maybe a part two of this you know just some other concept if you have an idea let me know in the comments maybe some speed ramping color grading all that stuff basically everything you need to know about a certain subject yeah i think it'd be really cool so let's get a thousand likes for our next masterclass video getting back into the video with the first effect we're gonna be going over is this kind of clone where it slides over to the right and there's some like ghosts following him behind i think it's a really cool effect it's kind of a variation of a tutorial that i already have on my channel but i got some new sauce and i want to go ahead and show you guys how to do that so the first thing i'm going to do is duplicate our roto layer and it's going to go to roto 2. i'm just going to drag it down you don't really and then rename it to ghost trail layer i think when you're doing these clones it's really important to kind of name your layers it just keeps it organized and you kind of understand what everything is when you're going back and editing later on and then go to your effects and presets type in offset and drag that onto the ghost trail layer now you can see if we go to the effects controls tab offset's in there and if you drag shift center to you can see we start having these clones and let's go ahead and keyframe that at the start and then go all the way to the end or the last the frame right before it just so we can see what we're doing now let's drag that one two times through so just have them loop two times through i'm just basically clicking on this left hand number right here and dragging it to the right and then i like to match it up as best as possible so it's behind our subject then click u on your keyboard while you're selected on that layer it's gonna bring up the keyframes and then highlight both of them and click f9 or if you don't have that keybound you can go to keyframe assistant and easy ease it's basically just going to make the keyframes look a little smoother and now when we play that you can see what we have here it's already kind of the effect it's missing a little bit that motion blur and the ghost trail itself but it is a cool clone effect right away so to get that ghost trail i'm going to be using echo so then go ahead and drag on your echo and the first thing you're going to notice is depending on where you are in the clip it's going to look a little weird to fix that go to echo operator and i'm gonna go to composite in front of that way we have the clone behind him and let's bump that number up from something from one to maybe something like five that way there's five clones and then to get it to kind of fade out you wanna change the decay i personally do 0.8 most of the time it's basically making it 20 more transparent each time it's duplicated this is 100 80 60 40 20 and then you can change the echo time uh for the tutorial i'm going to keep it the same basically the echo time is how long it takes to echo the next time so you can change the duration to be split up further apart or closer together and now when we play that you can see we have the effect and it's almost there the only thing that's missing is motion blur and this is one of the effects where the motion blur built into after effects is not going to actually work so i personally use rsmv but if you don't have that you can use force motion blur it's built into after effects as well i personally find it runs a little slower on my computer and doesn't look as good but you can see how it's already adding this motion blur the second tutorial and the rendering of my computer i'm going to use rsmb it's a paid plug-in but i highly recommend it and i'm just going to drag it on and leave it the same so now when you add on that motion blur whether it be cc force motion blur or rsmb you can see this is what the effect looks like i think it looks super fire and it's a really good clone effect that uh i haven't really seen many people do honestly and and i think it looks good and then on to the next effect this one isn't so much of a clone but it has like the same concept so i figured i included in i have a tutorial on this effect already but i just have a little bit extra sauce now with the rsmb how to make it look a little smoother so let's go ahead and do that real quick it's very similar to the one we just did and then for this effect there's not really any reason to duplicate any clips so just go ahead and drag on offset onto your background layer go to the start keyframe that shift center two go all the way to before the last frame and just drag that however many times you want let's go ahead and do two and then line up fredo just how we did in the last effect the best you can click you on your keyboard and go ahead and easy ease them by clicking f9 and then again that effect already is pretty much done all you have to do is add on rsmb or again that cc force motion blur and that's because offset is one of the effects that doesn't actually trigger the built-in motion blur in after effects so either cc force motion blur or rsnb will do the trick and i'm just going to drag on rsnb default settings and we can have this render out real quick and just like that you have a pretty cool like clone background duplicates while you're watching this video i'm just going to go ahead and show you basically these basic concepts of all the clones and you can combine these in different ways so some of the clone effects that i'm going to go ahead and do later on in the tutorial you can go ahead and add on for example if you wanted this effect to go on while that was happening since i already have it done i can just copy go to our tutorial layer and paste that real quick and now you can see we have two different of these clone effects going on at once i'm going to be going over how to do that clone effect later on but i just wanted to show you how you can combine different effects in one i just want to go ahead and touch on each kind of concept and then learning each of these concepts will kind of teach you how you can use them in different ways to combine them make your own effect all that stuff so the next one we're going over is where these clones slide out from the side you can have them slide up slide down all these different options there's just more room to the left so i went ahead and made the clone slide out to the left and then slide back in to the right so to start off you're going to want your masked out layer or your rotoscope layer go ahead and click ctrl d let's go ahead and rename this one clone and then go to the transform options so click on this arrow transform and then go ahead and keyframe the position at the start and then go however many frames you want to the right i'm gonna go ahead and do two so one two and then i like to keep the position in like a where you change the number equally each time you can go ahead and freehand it and just drag it a little bit to the left and kind of just try to match the general look of it let's go ahead and keep it simple and go from 960 to 860 and you can see how that changes depending on which way you want to go you'll just have to either add or subtract from the left or right hand side number the left hand side number is going to bring it horizontally left and right and then this 540 number is going to bring it up and down for us we want it to go to left so let's go ahead and do 860. and then after that go ahead and highlight those keyframes click f9 and then go and duplicate that layer and it's going to keep the transform options for the lower layer enabled so that's perfectly fine let's go ahead and go two more frames to the right one two drag that keyframe to match that line and go to 760. and it's going to come out just a little bit further and then let's go ahead and duplicate it just one last time for the tutorial duplicate that go two frames one two and then six sixty and now when we play that you can see they slide out and if you're not seeing the motion blur make sure to enable the motion blur up here and also to all the layers that are moving and then if you go ahead and click on all the layers that have keyframes and click u you can see the keyframes now and let's go leave it out for a little bit and then maybe when he starts putting his hands back together we can go ahead and keyframe all the positions to start right here and then go one two and we're gonna want this last layer to go away first so keyframe it right to 760 or the layer above it match that number so it goes right behind that clone and then i'm just going to go ahead and trim it out you can keyframe it and reset it but i personally like the way this looks a little bit more and then i'm going to keyframe also right here on the 760 one go one two to the right and then keyframe that to 860 and then trim it and then also keyframe on on the last clone right here and go one two and then bring that to 960 or click reset and you can also trim that and now we can see we have the clone come out and the clone go back in i've seen this style clone done multiple different times it's basically just creating a pattern in the keyframes so you can see how we did two frames each time we wanted the clone to come out you can make it uneven or even it doesn't really matter but it is good to kind of have a pattern so maybe if you had this guy go up here and then the next frame after go up here and then the frame after go up here and you can obviously see there's this like harsh edge so it doesn't work really too well in this clip in particular but you can go ahead and you know move them in in certain areas to kind of have them duplicate and follow that trend and then yeah if you didn't want to do like that mathematical way where i was just subtracting 100 each time you actually just click on your layer and then drag around so if you were just like more visual or whatever you know you could have the clone come out a certain amount each time i think it does typically look better when it's kind of even but it doesn't have to be like super dead on so then this next effect is just having the clone slide up and move it's very similar to that last method that we were doing so let's go over that real quick duplicate your roto layer just how we did last time and then open up that transform options and this is kind of playing with it not starting directly behind our layer so let's go ahead and drag him out a little bit to the left at start and then drag it down make sure he's completely out of frame and then maybe go 10 frames to the right we can change later and drag that to 540. that's going to be the same height as the other one and i'm also going to change the scale to 110 so each time he pops up just gets a little bit bigger it's just another something else you can do in the video to kind of make it stand out now let's go ahead and duplicate that layer again start it at where that one ended and let's drag to the left i'm not going to do super mathematical here make that 120 find a position where we want it to end at keyframe the position drag it down so it's out of frame and then go 10 frames to the right and then bring that to 540 so it's in spot and then i'm going to make sure i am easy easing these keyframes and you can see how they come up and just how they come up let's go ahead and make them go back down so then i'm going to keyframe the position on this one go 10 frames to the right then drag it down and then go here keyframe that last clone go 10 frames and drag it completely down now you can see the clones go up and then they go down just like that you can change the pacing of it or anything like that if you wanted to you can highlight these keyframes and go into the graph editor i'd suggest doing this actually and then for the graph editor i kind of want to have the clone come up pretty fast and then slowly get to the position so to do that i'm going to drag that right hand bar all the way to the right so that way the graph kind of looks like this you can see now fredo comes up really fast and kind of slows down the movement you can see he's still traveling up a little bit but just really slow and then i'm gonna do the exact opposite for the second keyframe on the way down so it kind of starts off going down slow and then picks up speed and then let's do that for these other keyframes on the other one so just copying that exact model and now you can see i think it looks a little smoother you don't have to go ahead and do all that but i think when you do learn the graph editor as well as these clones it's really going to take your clones to the next level then the next effect we're going to be going over is this kind of like inside clone effect where it kind of just like infinitely goes inside of him i think this effect's really cool and there's a really easy way to do it actually but it's just involving a different concept so for this effect similar to the last few ones but there are there is an extra technique that you're gonna have to add in so stay tuned for that so for this effect we're gonna go ahead and duplicate the roto just how we have been for all the other effects but this time we're gonna be working on that top roto layer so open up the transform options and the first thing i'm gonna do is go up here to the pen behind anchor point tool and instead of the anchor point tool being in the middle i'm gonna try to find like the dead center of fredo himself it doesn't have to be dead center but the closer you can get the better so we're gonna put it right there if it helps you you can turn off the background layer and kind of try to get the middle of your subject so height and width wise i think it's like right about there like right where his chain's at now you can see when you scale down it's going to go inside of him and versus where if we were to just scale from the beginning it would go inside of him and then we'd have to move the position and it's just a lot more complex that way and it doesn't look as good most of the time so i'm going to use that anchor point tool put it like right in the center or as close as possible keyframe the scale and then let's go 10 frames to the right bring it down to maybe 90 you can go by intervals of 10. this one definitely looks a lot better if you go by intervals at least so i went ahead and did 90 and then let's go 10 more frames and bring it back up to 100 that way it kind of snaps back into place and i'm gonna highlight those keyframes click f9 and we can go ahead and duplicate that layer but now we're going to be working on the layer above so we're going to actually open up the keyframes on the layer above and instead of 90 we'll go 80 duplicate it click you on your keyboard to bring up the keyframes go to 70 duplicate it u 60 and let's go to 50 here so one more time u and then 50. so now we can see we have this layer where it kind of looks infinite you can go all the way down to 10 and have it go all the way down so let's go ahead and see what that looks like and just like that you have that bounce effect it's pretty simple to do honestly it looks really crazy for how easy it is to actually do um just make sure you have the motion blur on like always enable this and have the motion blur on you can get some really cool looks like something like this and then for our next one this is probably the most complex but when you break it down into step by steps it's really not that hard i just basically have the clone flying around a bunch of different areas and kind of flying out from the side flying back and forth and then back at the top again just flying out a few times so i'm gonna be going over and showing you how to do that this one i think naming is really really crucial because there's just gonna be so many duplicated layers let's go ahead and start off by duplicating our roto-layer working with the one below and let's name this low because we're gonna have it fall off to the left and then go to that transform options and let's go ahead and keyframe the position the scale and the rotation maybe we're not gonna change everything let's go ahead and make that anchor point in the center again just so if we do change any of the rotation and the scale it's going to change from that position so i'm going to scale it down just a little bit you can't really see what we're doing here but if i turn off that roto layer you can see that we made them a little smaller and let's go ahead and go 10 frames to the right and we just kind of want him to fly off the screen somewhere around here so it kind of falls down and then when you are hovered over this last keyframe here you can see we kind of have this dot in the line it shows a line and then a dot you can go ahead and drag this line and it will follow that line so it kind of has a more fluid of a look so now you can see it kind of like falls down i think that's a really useful tool that i think not a lot of people are actually know about so if you do click on a line and drag it it will give you a unique look and maybe let's keyframe the rotation of it a little bit let's go ahead and just see where we're at key from the rotation maybe down like that and then drag that to match that last keyframe so now we can see it kind of rotates and falls down and then i'm going to highlight all of the keyframes you could have keyframed the scale all the different things opacity if you really wanted to but i think for right now just leaving the rotation and the position is good enough now let's easy ease those keyframes just so it looks a little smoother and just like that he falls out be sure to turn back on that rotoscope layer on top if you didn't already so he kind of flies from behind i think it looks better that way and then let's go ahead and duplicate that layer a few frames to the right let's see maybe like three click you and i'm going to drag this set of keyframes actually just to the right so highlight all of them and move them to the right now you can see that's going to follow behind it's just going to follow the exact same path so then we can duplicate that again click you go one two three highlight those keyframes and go to the right and that's kind of how to make it fly out and follow each other really easily when you see like these effects in music videos and stuff you do think there's a lot of work going on but really if you learn how to duplicate it and use these keyframes in patterns there's not really too much to it other than just coming up with creative ideas to do with it in that sequence i also had this clone cl kind of flying in front then behind and then back in front here so let's go over that real quick so duplicate the roto again this one's going to have no keyframes on it already and then go to the transform options keyframe the position and i'm going to drag it to the right all the way till he's off the screen then let's go and find kind of right where that last one kind of ends because i don't want to have too much going on at once and drag it the keyframe to match there and make sure because your subject could be moving you can see how we moved it to the right but he's not actually out of frame so i just recommend making and lining this up right here without a frame that way your subject definitely does not come in frame and then go 10 frames to the right and we're going to do the exact opposite where we actually have the bar go all the way over here highlight those and easy ease them and now when we play that we have the clone whipping pass real quick and let's go ahead and duplicate that layer and then click u drag those keyframes to the right so it kind of ends right there it's going to do the exact same thing so we actually want to do is just flip these keyframes so to do that you can just drag this one to the right a little bit line that one up with this one and then go 10 frames again just to line it up and there you go now it's going to slide back to the right and if you wanted to go behind the subject just drag that layer behind the default roto so now you can see he goes behind and then for the last rotoscope kind of concept is just having the rotoscope pop up before the clip actually shows up so you can see here fredo here is not matching up with the background and it pops up you can do any effect you want on this you can see if i delete these two layers you can see he's just kind of moving around and then popping into the background this is a more basic one but it is a clean transition you can do so to do that all you really have to do is just remove your background layer a little bit and then just drag a clip that you want to play behind it so for us we're just going to take a random clip for this music video and now you can see we have him pop up right there and it goes into the clip that's pretty much all i got in this clone video honestly i think with these concepts you should be able to kind of replicate any clone effect and kind of make your own out of any of the effects that you see in music videos if there's something i miss let me know in the comments i do believe though with all these concepts you should be able to figure out just about any clone effect there is done like i said if you did want the project files for this tutorial maybe copy and paste the keyframes from this project to your own project or there was just something you weren't understanding too well you could go ahead and support me on patreon i'll have a link down below i upload all the project files for my tutorials to that patreon for the supporters yeah guys that's pretty much all i got for you guys in this one if you made it all the way down like always i do appreciate you be sure to like comment subscribe let's get this video to a thousand likes and i'll do a part two or a master class on a different subject maybe the most liked one in the comments so if you wanted to learn how to do maybe the graph editor really well colors flow anything really that you guys have an idea on i can do a full master class on kind of break down everything you need to know from start to finish and we can do something like that if you wanted to support the channel and you also wanted to grab some music video editing assets you can check out my website briandalmonda.com i'll have a link down below as well as a tutorial playlist where i kind of showcase how to use the effects and what they can do it really is the best way to support the channel as well as save some time while editing so go ahead and check that out be sure to follow me on all social medias i'll have them linked down below but yeah that's pretty much all i got for you guys in this one hope you guys did enjoy peace
