hi I'm Emily Taylor I'm the creator of collage quilter calm today is the first video tutorial about making my Clementine pattern you can see Clementine right here so I'm just going to talk today about getting started some of the supplies you're going to need and how to prepare your fabric and how to think about selecting your fabric as well because really that's probably the most important key the the most important thing with this project is protecting your fabric so let's let's talk through getting started right now first of all you're going to need to purchase the downloadable pattern right now this is only a downloadable pattern and it's cheap it's only 12 bucks at collage quilter calm so included in the download there are 11 sheets so you'll see the main image and then instructions and what the image will look like with some tips as well as the templates so the template will come piece by piece you'll print it out on just regular letter sized paper and then you'll tape it together according to the little instructions so each sheet has a piece of paper or instructions about where it goes and you'll see it you can put it together kind of using this so there are eight sheets of paper that you'll print out to create the download and then what you'll need to do is either use a lightbox I love this lightbox you can also use a window just hang this up in a window during daylight hours and that will become a great light box and you will need a piece of fabric I just used real lightweight white thin white cotton white muslin will work and then it's about probably 24 inches by 36 inches so you need about a yard of fabric and I'll just I'm gonna just show you real quick how to do this it's very simple so I'll line it up to my to my design I'm going to hold it up with the lightbox so you can see how easy it is to see look at that can you see that Amelia okay so you can see then I'm just going to trace this with a pencil because it doesn't matter if I use a pen or pencil I don't even need to use a fabric pencil because this is all this foundation is all going to be covered up so I will just go through the tracing process and I'm not going to bore you right now by doing the whole thing on this video but you get the idea so I will trace the entire design on to my foundation panel I don't know if you can see that but when I'm all finished I'll have that there and then again this is a great little reference as is the photograph of the finished quilt so that's the first step okay next we're going to pull out our fabric let me talk to you a little bit about the fabric so this design is a little bit different than some of the other designs that I've done because you all you see are some great some gradation in you know from dark to light in the pot and in the Clementine tree and then each of the clementines has kind of my traditional three tone to tone or three tone that will guide your fabric placement but what I want you to do at this point is just kind of keep in mind that for every color that work that we're using so the main colors of course are the greens and the blues and whites and of course the oranges for the Clementine so you've got a little bit of brown that you'll be using for the stem and I also want you to make sure that you've got some grays that are going to be the shadow area of the pot and then your background fabric so you I've used the background fabric that I've used is just a an assortment of kind of some lighter real neutral fabrics and you can kind of play with that it can be all whites it can be light blue it can be kind of creamy Pink's mine is just a real good assortment and I'll put some close-up pictures of my background fabrics and all of my fabric selection I'll put that in the Facebook group so just as a reminder this quilt tutorial we kind of have a Facebook group called quilt along or collage quilt along with Emily and that's where I'll post a lot of images and helpful tips as we're going through the process of making this collage quilt it's also a great forum for you to be able to post pictures and share your progress and we'll be having a giveaway towards the end of January for those of you who are following along and share pictures of your progress so anyway that's a little incentive for you to to participate so again I'm just going to show you I want to make sure that you collect greens that are probably in three different values just from light to dark so my lightest fabrics they might have a little bit of yellow in them I'm going to my mid-tone fabrics so here's kind of the lighter fabrics going to my mid-tone fabrics with these and then jumping all the way to my really dark fabrics so make sure that when you're selecting your greens that you have a really good assortment of greens and you're going to need a wider variety of greens than any other color because you've got a lot of space in this area to cover and you'll also notice and again I'll show you some up-close pictures but I incorporate a little bit of dark blue and a little bit of purple just to give it a little more depth so that's how to approach your greens do the same thing with your oranges so my lightest probably my main color orange looked like this it was a really kind of a muddied yellow orange I pulled in a little bit of the real true burnt orange all the way down to this rusty orange and then I even used a little bit of this kind of on a purpley oranjee batik and then my light colors look like this so I hope this gives you a good idea of the assortment of colors that I used so my light my height the highlights of my Clementine are actually this light color this light yellow as well as this light kind of orange and white check and again I'll post some close-up photos on the Facebook group as well so and then you'll do the same thing with the Blues now the Blues are kind of interesting for the pot because we're creating this sort of replica chinoiserie pot that has some it's got to have some shadow in in these areas down here to kind of give it some dimension so that's why I want you to use some pull in some grays and then this is where we can use some really great blue and white fabrics so these are these are the ones that I used for my pot lots of just kind of the same color of blue maybe some that are a little bit lighter and then I really I found this one a few years ago and I love this because it's got exactly the pattern that I'm trying to create and we'll talk more about fabric placement when we get to it but just so you know I didn't try to create anything other than a suggestion of this pattern I didn't create a pattern but when your eye first looks at it it just you know what you're looking at so that's the great thing about kind of remembering we're creating a more impressionist style of of collage quilt and doing that we don't have to be super specific there can be suggestions of what we're trying to create so I'm just going to show you real quick now I have what I used lights tema seem to for this collage quilt as my adhesive so today this time we're not going to use any glue we're going to use lights Dima seem to so I'm just going to show how I prepare my fabric and I only do it in small amounts because I don't like leaving a lot of fabric with the steam machine so let me show you let me walk through this process right now okay so again if you choose to use the fusible the one that we're using and that I used on this project is the light steam Aseem too and so what I will do is I'll prepare my fabric by just making sure that I have squares or rectangles that are about this size so roughly anything about 8 inches square or 10 inches anything less than that so that's how I start and I'm just going to pull out my steam Aseem and I expose I lift up this paper that steam esteem has to it's it's a fusible web that has paper on two sides the back of it has a yellow grid printed on it and so I'm going to pull up the plain side paper and I actually just fold it right there and then I'll lay my fabric pieces right down on it Amelia will you please make sure that we can see what we're doing here can you can you see what I'm doing okay and I will just lay these pieces right down so I'm laying them wrong side of fabric to the exposed sticky on the steam a seam and then when I'm ready to cut it away I use paper scissors well I use converted fabric scissors but that are sharp I don't use my good fabric scissors I use my dedicated kind of steam a seam scissors and when I say say steam a seam please remember that I mean the light steam a seam to that particular product so now you can see I've just got it right there and I'm going to cut out around each square right along the fabric so that it's a nice that the great thing about using this adhesive for this project is I don't want to have any frayed edges the pot I want it to look really smooth same with the clementines so steam esteem will give me a really smooth consistent adhesion and it is great for minimising the frayed fabric edges okay so that's it and then I'm going to take my trusty little cute little iron right here so it's ready and then I'll just lay this down flat and do a quick press so that I can assure I'm assured that the fabric is adhered or the the steam Aseem is adhered to the fabric and so now that's ready to use okay so you're going to need to do that with each piece of fabric that you're working with and then from there it's really simple and we'll get will move on to the technique and how to apply the fabric and how to think like an artist as we're creating but please remember the number one key in this collage is a wide variety of greens meaning from light to dark same with the oranges and same with the blue and white let me just mention a few of the products that I'm using for this that are I have links to them on my blog post so if you go to collage quilter calm and go to tutorials you'll see links to some of these products that I really like you'll see link to the steam esteem and to the scissors that I like and just especially to this for this little iron and pressing that the wool pressing that so if you don't have those items it's not necessary you don't need them but they do make life really simple so that's it I think if you have any questions as you're getting started and collecting your fabric please don't feel fear or feel free to contact me you can email me Emily at collage quilter calm or you can always find me in the Facebook group that's collage quilt along with Emily so I look forward to seeing your project and helping you along the way thanks for being here
